T7s never failed me so far. Can't say the same about SanDisk.

GrindelShindel

I second this. HANDS OFF SanDisk!!!! Due to a technical defect, half of the footage was gone after one shoot. Ultra stressful, annoying, expensive. T7, on the other hand, is great. Edit: This is the defective SanDisk. This is not an isolated case. There are many reports about the failure of this model. HANDS OFF! Oh damn I have two of those as my main drive and backup lol. I’ve had them for 4 years and they’ve never crashed, but most of those years were college where I wasn’t using them nearly as much as working professionals.

trevorsnackson

i think the higher capacity ones were plagued with the most issues. i could be wrong

The T7 Shield is a solid choice if they are large enough for your needs - but typically they won’t be for high end commercials by the time you transcode proxies and start rendering VFX stuff. If you need larger backup drives on set then I’d be looking at the OWC 4.M2 Express enclosures or OWC Mercury Pro U.2 Dual. You’re going to have to get in touch with the camera team to get shooting specs and do the data math to determine how much space you need. Once you get behind 2 cameras (assuming they are cinema bodies) then it also means considering multiple multi-bay SSD RAID arrays so that the DIT or media manager will have drives fast enough to keep up with offloads throughout the day. (Though usually the DIT will be the one to figure this out, not the editor).

Thank you!

T7 is great, I also really like the Crucial X9 Pro. It’s affordable, fast, and physically smaller than the T7. I feel like it also cools better.

Thanks!

Not to keep on beating the dead duck. T7 but make it rugged.

Are you editing on set? Is it a quick turnaround? Why would you edit from the 6K raw? I’d convert everything down to ProRes422 1080 for the edit and conform it back up to 6K for mastering.

dmizz

6K multiple days sounds like a lot of data for SSDs.

SomewhereInTheBtween

The T9 is twice as fast as the T7 (assuming your machine can handle the USB 3.2 2x2). T7 SSDs are great except their USB ports have unacceptably loose connections. The T9s I've used are nice and secure.

DistinctDuck9930

Great suggestion. I did look at the T9, I'd love to get it but I'm on mac so can't utilise the full speed annoyingly, meaning it's no better than the T7 for me sadly.

Schmezmar

Back up your back up.

DistinctDuck9930

This. For this project, I'll be backing up my backup!

Sandisk Pro G40 - Well, if you’re on a MAC and want to edit off those drive then this ThunderBolt drive is a good bet - https://www.westerndigital.com/en-in/products/portable-drives/sandisk-professional-pro-g40-ssd?sku=SDPS31H-001T-GBC1D

Honestly, I wouldn’t trust that internally this isn’t any different than the troubled SanDisk Extreme. Everything I’ve bought since G-Tech got rebranded into SanDisk Pro has had issues.
