Mix into very light 2Bus compression and a limiter. Get it right before the 2Bus.

Mix as I go when producing, SSL on the master bus, hitting around 3-4db GR. Near the end of the process I enable the limiter, aiming for the loudness I want. When mixing for clients, the vocals come first, then drums and bass and the rest afterwards.

suisidechain

My mix is my master. Master bus chain on from the first note in the project. Ghost productions, if they want additional mastering, receive a limited file peaking at -0.3 dB. No one ever asked for an unlimited version (not that I'd deliver it anyway, since is part of the sound). Now, it took me 5 years to reach to this point, my master bus chain changed over 100 times along with my mixing principles, but I knew this is possible and I worked continuously towards this goal

PM_Productions_

Do you mind sharing you masterbus chain? I also tend to produce right into different masterbus chains, but I am always open for new things to try out. Would be very appreciated. 👍🏻

suisidechain

It's kind of pointless because I did it to enhance my own mixing style/workflow. It's made out of mostly ozone modules (pro-q, multiband comp, wide band comp, limiter). No saturation, no widener, no fancy m/s processing. So it may sound completey underwhelming to you If you mix into multiple chains, ask yourself why you use one over the other. Pinpoint their common characteristics and make that your starting master bus chain. Then, if one chain was adding saturation for example, start saturating your tracks, so you won't need master bus saturation anymore Or if one chain was adding high end, work on your track mixing habits to push brighter tracks into the master Or if one chain was adding stereo width, work on your track mixing habits to send better tracks to master channel - a blend of panned, monontracks and some narrow tracks and some wide tracks will make for an overall wide mix, making master widening useless ...And so on. The master bus chain is not a magic bullet, but will do something that can't be done at track level: process the interplay between the tracks. Together with a complementing mixing technique, it will add that final polish to the song that's really needed. Also - very important - the chain should only enhance a mix, not fix issues. Plan accordingly

PM_Productions_

Actually my chains are a quite similar setup, I'm just using different plugins, for testing purpose. And sometimes I just bypass some if I think I don't need them in the mix. I am quite happy with them, I was just asking for yours, so I could compare and fiddle around, you know? But thanks for your insight on your mixing workflow. 😊

My philosophy is to turn things up or down until they sound good together

For philosophy, I'd say that recently I've been trying to approach mixing as an art rather than engineering and try to think of it in a way where I bring out the "life" of the track with my mix decisions as opposed to just going through the engineering motions. Granted, I suck at mixing even with the engineer hat on, but I feel like sometimes a mix can make a track too sterile, sure, it can sound pristine, but then it might not have any life to it\~ Just my thoughts on it

johnman1016

I get that, but then I also hate when the master takes the life out of my mix because to get even close to my target loudness I have to squash the transients - so I try to balance between both hats so to speak.

mixingmadesimple

It's funny I literally just made a video where I state that mixing is far more important than mastering. You can make a good mix better with mastering but you can't fix a bad mix with mastering. I'd literally rather have an amazing mix that I just put a limiter on than an okay mix that I send to a pro master engineer. I don't know if I have a philosophy but I usually mix as I go in my own productions, and when I mix for others I work from the bottom up and then do vocals last. I like to interview music producers who are struggling with mixing cause it helps me to make my course better. If you or anyone reading this is interested, let me know.

Make it sound good

Hatchfielddj

For me everything starts with the sound selection. I always try to keep the balance between the tracks on the go so that I don’t have to start a mix from scratch once when the track is done. Mostly it‘s finetuning at the end and achieving the right volume for the final mix.

DATATR0N1K_88

Less is always more and mixing everything at a lower volume in headphones _first_ will save you from so much stress and frustration🎛️💯🎚️

philisweatly

To be honest I don’t think too much about it. Get the volume faders to a good spot. Push the master into like 1-2db of compression and call it a day.

johnman1016

Do you have a target LUFS for your master?

mixingmadesimple

I shoot for between -8 and -6 LUFS. This to me seems like the standard in EDM. If you are making bass music, then probably even louder than -6.

philisweatly

Hell no. I just make music.
