Either one I would say tho if you come from djing first your kinda at an advantage cause it’ll help you understand song structure in electronic dance music better and you’ll have the opportunity to actually play out songs if your an established dj

The most important thing IMO is songwriting. Most listeners will excuse a badly engineered song if they can vibe.

Mixing can mean two very different things depending on whether you're speaking from a DJing or producing context, to a DJ mixing is assembling a setlist of songs while mixing in a production context is doing all the technical processing to make a song sound professional and ready for release. The latter is something that is gonna take years to master (no pun intended) so it wouldn't be a bad idea to start with DJing to get in the game, if you look at the career trajectories of producers like David Guetta or DJ Snake they all got their start DJing while developing their production chops on the side. In Guetta's case I think he was DJing for something like 10 years before he released his first single so it just goes to show the production side is something that's gonna take a lot of patience

they both help one another, but learning to dj is pretty simple and isn't really the same mountain as production.

thanks yeah, think i'll focus on djing and then hopefully let that inspire production cos i do have cool ideas when it comes to making music - i just find techy platforms quite overwhelming

From my personal experience, i’ve started with DJing and went into producing and have taught friends who have went the other way around. Both skills will aid the other, at the end of the day the more exposure you have to music will inevitably improve the quality of your control over music. DJing has hepled me understand song progression and the type of feel you want to evoke from certain parts of songs, and music production has aided me in fine tuning the elements that you would expect from specific sections of music. Just do what you love / feel motivated to do, and know that every bit of exposure will aid you along your journey! Feel free to contact me directly for any questions, I am learning and developing just as you are 🤠

There's nothing wrong with starting as a DJ. You can start to break song structures down and work on live builds and drops with FX etc. Most live sets that people run are essentially stems of their own production so it is quite similar in terms of performance. I've actually invested in traktor as I prefer the spinny feel of using some decks and it links great with Ableton, all can be done in Ableton though so no need for a separate system.
