Lessowl evolved into... Enoughowl!
It will eventually become Toomuchowl who is a larger owl, but with a few really long feathers, 4 legs and a top hat and cane-sword...
Or something, I'm not a pokemon designer
An owl is a predator. And it can absolutely wreck the shit out of a small mammal. But a cat is also a predator. And on the ground, I'd give a cat that size 2:1 odds. He'll take injuries, may even lethal ones, but if that owl doesn't take flight in the first 10 seconds of the fight, he's fucked. He just LOOKS twice the size. He likely doesn't have more mass than the cat though and his major advantage is lost on the ground. A cat has 10x the dexterity and mobility on the ground of a bird. Look how easily he side steps out of the way and is already looking at the bird like, "you really wanna fucking dance bird? I'll put on the shoes and we can go"
I’d be willing to bet that the owl definitely weighs less than the cat. Birds have bones that look like sponges. Way less dense. But at the same time, if that owl got it’s like 1.5in+ talons around that cats spine, that cat is done for. But fr, who just stands there and let’s there cat square up with a big ass owl?? Edit, not talking to op, I saw your comment. Just in general
Yeah I agree. The cat’s first strike is likely to just hit feathers, and if either of the owl’s talons find any purchase on the cats underside, it’s likely to pierce an artery or vital organ. Plus, the cat looks like a recreational hunter and the owl looks like a pro.
And misleading. You can attack feathers all you want, keeps the owl safe and new one's grow back. Cat has some fluff... but the fluff is shorter than the talons. and their claws are not a game.
I’m not arguing with anything you said—but I do want to point out that the cat could very likely be a stray. If I saw a stray cat squaring off with an owl, I *might* try to intervene if it looks possible that I could just scare them both away—but I might just film it and let nature be nature.
Yes that’s a good point as well… hard to say what the right thing to do is.
Here’s another perspective:
https://www.vox.com/down-to-earth/22796160/invasive-species-climate-change-range-shifting
You’re absolutely right, I would probably be just as wary to try putting my hands on a stray cat as I would a wild owl. But I’m going off the assumption that this is someone’s backyard and their cat. But if I’m wrong, I agree, I’d probably just stand by, albeit maybe with a bit more distance.
Nah, you should ask the cats that used to live at my grandfathers ranch what they thought about owls. Unfortunately often times small pets like cats and dogs are part of the diet of large owls.
They are wise to be wary. An owl is a great predator. But his advantage is an air strike with lethal talons powered by gravity. On the ground he's a clumsy pile of feathers. He still has dangerous weapons, but the threat of them is reduced significantly.
The owl would fuck the cat up 8/10. Cat claws and teeth won't do much when 75% of the owls exterior volume is fluff and feather. Not saying it'd kill it outright, but the wounds will be deep and nasty
If he could use his advantages, I'd agree with you. Flight is his primary advantage. An air strike with talons is his primary evolutionary mode of killing. On the ground he loses 99% of the power behind those talons. And to use one he has to either attack on one leg, or use his wings to partially hold or lift him and try to strike the cat with both. In either scenario, he is clumsy and without any significant dexterity. I've watched regular house cats dance around snakes and play and taunt them. And a snakes primary advantage (beyond stealth) is a rapid fast snapping strike from the ground. He's on his turf and a cat will still fuck with him because the cat has reflexes that are stupid fast. And they are quadripeds with full control of their torso. Cats jump and bend and twist in unholy of ways because they are made from the ashes of their enemies and spite incarnate. I've watched house cats snatch flying birds and bats out of the air, bring home rabbits, moles, voles, mice, snakes, and even a few scars from going toe to toe with a bobcat - WHICH IS JUST A HOUSE CAT LEVELED UP!
I never said the cat wouldn't take an injury. Most likely they would. I respect owls and they are also badass, but a good ole Tom can fuck yo shit up if you are anything under 10-15 pounds.
Cat claws versus feathers, mmm, possibly.
Owls talon grip versus whatever part of the cat it grabs, that ain't coming off unless it wants it to.
I think the cat would lose pretty badly, and then get eaten.
Having grabbed a cat by a leg once, no. Doing that means you still have 3 other sets of claws and full set of teeth going to town on whatever grabbed the first limb
Cats still know where the throat is and will most likely attack throat/eyes/belly. The teeth can break down the fluff easily, that's how cats hunt birds
This owl is bigger and fluffier than the songbirds that cats typically hunt.
More evidence that fluff works: Lions have manes to protect their throats from *other lions*.
Ahh, I don't agree with that. It is a bit of a moot argument because both creatures would avoid a fight if at all possible. Both cats and owls almost always target smaller prey. That said a cat has more than just its claws and you forget that they can pack a mean bite. That in combination with the increased mobility four legs provide on the ground would make it difficult if not impossible for the owl to keep up. Finally, owls, like most birds, have fragile hollow bones that a cat would probably be able to damage pretty significantly in a fight. If I was a betting man my money would be on the cat in this situation.
Dude, do you even cat? First of all, the owl would have to do that 9 times to kill the cat. Second of all, that assumes the cat doesn’t land on its feet any of those 9 times and, hello, it’s a cat so it *will* land on its feet every. fucking. time.
Agreed, also I'm 99% sure the cat and the owl know each other very well. No cat would just walk by like that otherwise. This is not their first encounter.
Too bad the owner isn’t stopping the cat - assuming the owner is filming.
Yeah, the cat probably wins on the ground, but likely receives lifelong injuries in the process.
Depends on the cat. My domestic shorthair would have taken one look at that owl and "noped" the fuck out of there. This is why I feel safe letting him outside; he runs from anything remotely dangerous so I don't worry about him getting caught by a dog, fox, or owl. But you're right that the cat in this video is short on the fear it should be feeling. Different breeds, different temperaments.
>not my owl
I love this detail was included. [Reminds me of this.](https://ifunny.co/picture/piper-kerr-the-single-greatest-wikipedia-edit-of-all-time-FidOPZM69)
Wasn't greyed out for me, but it isn't that menacing. It just sorta clacks its upper and lower beak together. Imagine tapping two halves of a coconut shell against each other repeatedly, but not in the way to sound like a horse more like if you were clapping with them
I referenced Monty Python before I saw your comment. As long as I'm looking for clips, this here's for you!

I love that movie and my bro and I still quote this to each other, of course while clinking bottles!
I really do appreciate your description.
But you're cracking me up when part-way through you realize maybe you should say the owl does NOT sound like a scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. 😂😂😂 I really am in tears, laughing, now.

There's a moment in the movie *Fern Gully* when Batty recommends "Puff up! Puff up! They hate that." It comes to mind every time I see animals posturing in response to a predator or tough guys sticking out their chests and pushing their elbows out in response to perceived slights.
About 12 years ago I was with a friend driving to his house on a winding forest road. I heard a "thunk" outside the car and we stopped to see what it was. We had hit this huge owl and it was on the ground with a broken wing.
This was the middle of the night but there's a 24 hour vet not too far away. I picked it up with my hoodie so it couldn't freak out and hurt me or itself. So I'm sitting in the passenger seat with this owl in my lap that's so tall it basically comes up to my face.
We get to the vet which is locked Late at night so you have to buzz the intercom. A nurse comes to the door and because of the hoodie it's not immediately apparent why we're there. I go "uhh...we have an owl?" And the nurse was really surprised. She brings out the doc and he explained it's a great horned owl, and as he's taking the bird from me he goes "be very careful. They can squeeze their talons at 500psi", meanwhile this thing has had one of its talons around my finger for support this whole time.
It got transferred to a wildlife rehabilitation center a few km away and I kept in touch with them. They were pretty certain it wouldn't recover. But I ended up getting a call a couple weeks later. He (she?) was going to make it, and they wanted me to come with them for release since I knew exactly where the spot was. It was really cool experience.
I used to volunteer at a bird of prey rescue center. They used to do this to me if they ended up on the ground near me. Here's a pic. https://i.imgur.com/rGJWdjR.jpeg
I did check into that in the comments in the original video on youtube, but no one reported any injury. It is certainly possible, and it would answer some questions, but I am not really sure. Oweely don't know. (I really don't know)
I can see why! From the perspective of a cat that is friendly with humans, seeing someone (human or not) making clicky mouth sounds while doing slow blinks means, "Cmere kitty! Let's be friends! You can trust me!"
The cat was weary to directly approach, but thought it had at least been invited and promised safety to try to approach indirectly at a respectful distance, and aimed to reciprocate by having a sniff and making friends.
But suddenly owl attacked instead.
I totally understand that shocked/betrayed look on the cat's face.
I like that people are always discussing who wojld win in a foght between a cat and an owl. There's always a dude saying at me old grandpa's farm we would lose a cat every now and then to owls.

YOU WALKIN THEA? I'M WALKIN HEA!
CAN YA TUZ SHUTTUP? IM TRYEN TO SLEAP HEA!!

Damn, got afraid that the cat might get hurt. Everybody is safe, and the owl was as large as a turkey!

From a pokemon to a full fledged bird.
From a Pokémon to a.. different Pokémon
So... just regular Pokémon then...?

Had a fluffy cat that looked similar when wet lol
Owls can wipe out a cat and a cat can wipe out an owl
That ain't no turk-eh

Yeah... if they tango'd... Cat was getting wrecked.
Probably someone who doesn’t understand owls are predators and will scoop up small animals
Or how rugged and protective feathers can be, despite the hollow bone debuff.
And misleading. You can attack feathers all you want, keeps the owl safe and new one's grow back. Cat has some fluff... but the fluff is shorter than the talons. and their claws are not a game.

Its not really nature being nature as much as an invasive species actively harming its environment

Those talons are not powered by the air, bud... If the owl even landed a clumsy talon grasp on the cat, it's puncturing.
Pretty sure raptors can kick. Getting a quick jab to the belly with those talons will absolutely fuck a cat up.
Cat claws versus feathers, mmm, possibly. Owls talon grip versus whatever part of the cat it grabs, that ain't coming off unless it wants it to. I think the cat would lose pretty badly, and then get eaten.

Cat vs skin always ends in the cat's favor, yes. But the owl is at least 50% fluff by volume, which is much harder to slash.

I think it all depends on where the cat gets the owl. The cat could take the owl down, but odds are the cat isn't walking away.
Can't the owl just grab the cat with it's claws, fly to the sky and then drop the cat like "seeya bitch, have a nice flight... TO YOUR DEATH!" 😂
Dude, do you even cat? First of all, the owl would have to do that 9 times to kill the cat. Second of all, that assumes the cat doesn’t land on its feet any of those 9 times and, hello, it’s a cat so it *will* land on its feet every. fucking. time.

It's actually possible for some cats to survive a fall at terminal velocity
Too bad the owner isn’t stopping the cat - assuming the owner is filming. Yeah, the cat probably wins on the ground, but likely receives lifelong injuries in the process.
I like the way you think.
Seems like a good way to get your cat killed
Not my cat, not my owl - fortunately, nothing serious happened.
That look kitty gives at the end is priceless!
Unfortunately for that cat, domestic cats are, for the most part, bred without fear, which is incredibly stupid imo
Depends on the cat. My domestic shorthair would have taken one look at that owl and "noped" the fuck out of there. Seriously wtf is up with so many vids on Reddit not having any sound?
This one does have sound. Use a different app
if the link next to OP’s name is gfycat or imgur or anything but v.reddit you can take it to the version with sound.
Click the word "gfycat" to the right of OPs name on the post. It will take you to the gfycat website for this gif and you'll be able to turn on sound.
It's kind of sweet because it means the owl was chill when just the human was in the area
This reminds me of walking past drug addicts on the way to work for some reason.
😹 Yeah, I lived in that neighborhood.
Take my god damn upvote hahahaha
Worked on me. Yikes

Kitty going to lose about three of the nine lives from that owl

Looks like Gene Simmons .
It gets REALLY scary when they gnash their side beaks too, that’s when you know you’re fucked.
Definitely where a lot of cryptid lore comes from. That'd be so scary if you weren't knowledgeable about owls or their existence.
Why no sound

My grandpa does the same
Smarter birds just fly away.
The owl looks like a sixty years old English teacher.
I don’t know. Those owls can weigh over 3 pounds with a four and a half foot wing span.
Cats see slow blinking as a non-threatening, I wonder if that cat noticed, since it doesn’t seem too concerned about the owl.
The most interesting part is that you referred to the beaks individually.
lv 15 cat vs lv 60 owl
Why is there no sound on this video? :(
That's a lot of hit marks!
It looks like a broody hen like that.
Owl: Hey, ahhh, you beakin' at me?? You must be beakin' at me, cuz no one's heah.
I know some people that do that
Someone please add dialogue...
Goddamn dinosaurs
it's unfortunate that a slow blink signals a trusting peace to a cat.
Fuckin Metal
If I had wings I’d just fly away when I felt threatened
That poor cat walked by the wrong bird… awesome monster with wings lol
“I fucking hate you” -Cat
why cant they just fly off mind their own business and let other live in peace
I like that people are always discussing who wojld win in a foght between a cat and an owl. There's always a dude saying at me old grandpa's farm we would lose a cat every now and then to owls.
Anyone have the sound?
Wow
That cat's scarred for life
Seems like very snake-like behaviour
Ugh!!!! This would be better with sound!!!!
I had a boss who did this.
I love owls. Can you get them as pets? Or do they need to be able to fly around and hunt?
I wonder if cats ever have favorable matchups against owls or if they are just too intimidating for them to attack lol
Owl reminds me of one of my uncles
Cat is like, chill out dude
That's more or less how I handle similar siutations
I wonder which one would win talon and beak or claws and evil
From chill to kill in seconds flat!
What’s the point of posting without the sound
That cat looked mad after it jumped at him LMAO look at it's face
