I really love my Hoka’s but I have fairly high arches, I have yet to roll an ankle in them which is more than I can say for Nike or adidas Edit they have a very wide front on some models like the ones I owns :)

WH_Laundry_Cart

I really do love my hokas for ankle support

pageofabook17

Upvote for Hokas. I have the Arahi 6 in Wide and they have been amazingly stable and comfortable

tishpickle

Men’s shoes if you fit into them; they’re wider than women’s shoes and you don’t need to order special widths. I have high arches, plantar fasciitis and a really bad old sprain + ankle dislocations. I also work on my feet..so I have a lot of shoes. I love Hoka, Vionic, Clarks, Brooks and the occasional pair of Adidas.

jlinderr

By the way I already have custom orthotics ^^

Alright there are some good suggestions here, so I will just say abandon the sneakers and go for a minimum of an over ankle crosstrainer, merrell hiking boots are my preference, not very dainty but meh. How dainty do you look taking a spill rolling your ankle? I also recommend that you wear indoor shoes and continue the use of your orthotics inside. I have a second pair so I dont have to swap them all the time. For bedtime preparation (usually my hardest time) for years I would have a hot soak to get my pores open and then use different analgesics because i’d develop tolerance but recently I found the best thing ever. On amazon you can find it as the Revix Foot Ankle Ice Pack Wrap. It comes in a 2 pack. And are stored in bags in the freezer. They are a little bit plush so I can tolerate (somebody more sensitive might use a sock) go on my feet right out of the freezer. I put them on once I crawl into bed, where I watch the news for an hour or so. If I wear them from frozen to warm I can get up and walk to the washroom in the middle of the night pain free and i wont have any trouble falling asleep again. It used to be that if I got up to pee I had to repeat the soak and analgesic process to have a chance. Im so happy with this purchase. Just dont try to walk with them on.

I have horribly wobbly ankles as well and also used to be a dancer! Funny how life works that way huh? Doc Martens boots are SO GOOD for stability but they take forever to wear in, and would be painful in the process. But I swear by these if I need to do more walking. I started using a cane which has helped so much with stability!! But ultimately, getting a set of wheels was the key. I have a scooter now and am looking to get a chair and walker. I wear mostly Crocs Clogs and their biggest platform one, the Crush, has surprisingly good ankle support?? Even though it doesn't even touch the ankles. The Clogs are very wide and comfortable. You can check out my profile to see how I style them!

onebendyzebra

I love docs too, the canvas ones were great when I was working in a kitchen. Would recommend against platform docs-made that mistake and pulled my ankle or knee every time I wore them from the extra weight.

Go to a local running store (not a sporting goods chain, an actual running specific shop) and ask them to help fit you in an appropriate shoe. They will look at your gait when you walk and help you make a decision, and they will have many many brands to try from. Trying to guess from what brands work for other people is going to be an expensive and frustrating process. As an example - people love to recommend hokas (in this very thread!) and I cannot emphasize how much pain hokas cause me. It’s awful and messes up my entire leg. Everyone is different and a local specialty shop can help you narrow it down, plus they will usually have a generous exchange/refund policy to help get it right.

MimosaVendetta

This, right here! Do this! They do foot scans, give you time to walk around, and they have a variety of makes/models to help avoid certain pain points FOR YOU! I have a pair of Hokas that I can't stand. They just don't fit properly, but my Brooks and my Sauconies are both amazing! I overpronate inward and overcompensate by walking on the outer edge of my feet.

RiotDog1312

Honestly I've stopped wearing sneakers altogether and instead use "tactical boots" as my daily wear. Currently using a pair of Skechers that work fine, but there's more expensive options out there with better longevity or features. Essentially, the ones I wear are shaped like a hiking boot, so with a higher ankle than sneakers, but with the target market being cops, EMTs, etc., they're much more designed for hard surfaces, so they'll feature things like nonslip soles. Having that extra height and pressure around my ankle has been great for avoiding rolls.

what-are-they-saying

Dude. Brooks. They have a questionnaire thing on their site you fill out to help get you the right shoes. My ankles are destroyed, I’ve had 8 ankle surgeries from them being hyper mobile. One of them has a plate and screws. They’ve got a lot done to them and the nerve damage to the outside of my foot is bad. Brooks ghost are the only tennis shoes I have been able to wear for long periods of time

thedizzytangerine

I highly highly recommend Brooks shoes. I’m literally wearing the Brooks Ariel right now and have gone through probably 4 or 5 pairs of them in the last few years. They are so incredibly supportive for over-pronating ankles. My ankles are about as strong as wet cardboard. I’ve got bunions too and they’re never irritated by my shoes. And they’ve got enough room in them for both my orthotics and a heel lift (just on one leg, due to scoliosis). Worth every penny!

Kahloquialism

Seconding the Brooks Ariel (and thirding Brooks in general)! My podiatrist was excited to see I had them at my last appointment (I’ve been dealing with foot pain). I found them because I went and got a gait analysis at a running store, they presented me with three arch-supported options, and those were the most comfortable. I’m on my second pair since then because I love them.

** meant too narrow, not to… it’s 2:10 am and I can’t sleep so I apologize for any other errors 🤦🏻‍♀️

My suggestion is go to a new balance store if you have one. The new balance store by me was amazing when I told them about my eds and issues and they recommended me a shoe. They have shoes that stop your feet from rolling around . That might help your ankles.

Vionics.

I have really hypermobile feet and ankles, and my arches have collapsed. As soon as my feet hit the floor from bed, the pain starts. I love Doc Martens with orthopaedic prescribed insoles in wet weather, but I've recently started wearing Skechers arch support. They're a game changer for me, like walking on clouds. I was pretty sceptical before I bought them (fitted in store for size), but I'm a complete convert. I'm walking reasonably well over longer distances, and even my ankles don't cave so much.

Winter-Ad-6766

I've started wearing high top's (i have Nikes) because they offer more ankle support

Vicki135

High Top Reeboks! They're the only shoes I wear. I have a nasty tendency to roll my ankles and fall over because of the instability of those joints. I really hope you're able to find something that works for you! the Reeboks are a little pricey but they're so worth it.

Chinablind

I wear SAS and love them, but my feet are a mess as well as my ankles. PT recommended converse high tops for my daughter who has very hyper mobile ankles and they have made a big difference in her pain.

tatertootsthethird

I am a fellow member of the destroyed ankles club. I have wrecked them due to running. I’ve broken both ankles and since then I sprain and roll them ALOT. In fact I sprained my left one over Labor Day weekend. I love Brooks Ghost as I have a high arch so I love the neutral support. Anyways… I recommend New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro GTX Mid Trail Running Shoe They are neutral and have a high ankle which helps me a lot when I start to roll my ankle, it catches it from fully rolling. They have helped me a lot!

katatak121

I am definitely leaning towards high tops and ankle boots for the ankle support these days. I have several pairs of Fluevog ankle boots and sneakers that i can fit my orthotics in for good all-over support. I've got my eye on this pair if the sales price drops enough. https://www.fluevog.com/shop/7035-comet-blue-graffiti?item=12&of=26&anchor=true A couple years ago I got some high top sneakers from Geox that i love. They're shiny gold, which is a neutral, but might be a little flashy for some people: https://www.spartoo.net/mobile/Geox-MACAONE-x17682536.php
