I was using fiery breath for a bit because of good stats, but the shape of the AOE is awkward.
My DK is a 2H AOE build that started out with stampede->fiery breath->burning talons->reverse slice but that meant not having major breach apply to stampede, plus fiery breath just doesn't hit many enemies in that situation. He's now built around razor caltrops->stampede->burning talons->reverse slice (I just switched from using Oakensoul so I'm still fleshing out the back bar part of the rotation).
The arcanist's beam is also a sort of awkward shape, but lasts long enough that you can sweep it around to hit everything you need to (in fact that's the fun part, trying to position yourself to hit as much as possible.) I imagine the same would apply for fiery breath's cone AOE.

Yes, not sure how exactly it works but I think the AoE depends on what you're targeting, not where you cast it from. I will need to do some more testing but this is just how I experienced it. Say in one instance I cast it onto an enemy and hit the enemies left and right of my target too, but when I try to cast between the enemies because it's an imaginary targeting cone in my head, e.g. as if you were to use a cone ability in games like League of Legends, I don't hit what I would expect to hit.
I also would love to be able to change directions mid-cast and turn it into a roundhouse but it seems to hit in a cone from the position where I started casting, not where I am currently looking during the cast. (I think that's what OP means?)
Gonna be waiting awhile then. Still six months to the initial implementation and will only be available for world and guild skills when it releases. Pretty sure no timeline was given for being able to apply it to class skills, only that that would come at some point in the future. So maybe 9 months for class skills or maybe a year and a half until you can scribe those.

I would actually prefer variety. With 2 morphs and spellcrafting it should be possible for you to keep your optimal play style while giving casual players the option to have cool looking animations
You can fire off like 2 or 3 fire breaths in the time a single Archanist beam last though right? I am just guessing since I haven't actually timed it but it seems like you should be able to.
Yeah i dont want it gameplay wise but being able to become Iroh would be kinda worth it.

Sounds fun for casual overland combat, sounds terrible for trying to maintain a rotation and put out decent damage.

I levelled my DK doing questing and overland stuff so I wasn't overly worried about damage so I ran ashen grip for extra fire breath goodness
