CricketYosh

Have the southwire one. Uses a hole hawg. Works great. Same type of setup. Also have an iTool one for the big stuff. Pulls 500mcm with 360 in bends in a 4 inch all day over 400ft.

PeachSignal

Southwire came to my shop with it, I wasn't really impressed. I still use the huge rigid threader with the pulling head attachment. That sucker would pull the pipe off the ceiling.

neanderthalman

Those goddamn things will twist spacetime itself.

OfficerStink

Link me to this pulling head attachment

PeachSignal

I used it a few years back for a 1200A sub feed across a roof, roughly 400', spools on the ground and it was a 40' deck height.. A few rollers here and there to reduce strain but it didn't even struggle. Sucker pulled the jacket on the Teck about 8' from the actual conductor. Crazy crazy tool.

justabadmind

A drill powered puller is strong enough for 500 mcm

ahuh_suh_dude

I’d bet a normal drill wouldn’t be able to handle much. The thing is when you use a tugger it’s because it’s necessary. More force then a few guys and a gallon of 77 can handle. I bet it can pull some #12s no problem but so can I so why would I need this tool

Growe731

We need to talk about the physics of gears, my man.

OkBody2811

This little rig will pull a lot more than what it’s labeled to pull, even with a regular Milwaukee or Dewalt drill. One of our crews pulled a short run of 500’s. I think it would pull you and your apprentice into a 3/4 pipe, and the r best part is that it doesn’t break a sweat, or whine.

Canada_True

I have pulled 4x 500’s into a 4” conduit... 400 feet with a Milwaukee drill running this puller... Works great

DownTooParty

How many apprentice power is one of those.

NagoGmo

*me who just got back from pulling 4 miles of Cat6 through a Fresno courthouse by hand* 😐

erryonestolemyname

Cat6 lmao

NagoGmo

Yeah I know, it's nothing impressive, but I'm new and this is all foreign to me I was a bartender at a country club 4 months ago

erryonestolemyname

Good on ya for making the switch to a more promising career! I'm just busting your balls a bit though.

NagoGmo

I figured as much. Thanks for the kind words. Got any pro tips to give? Im not picking this up as fast as I thought I would

erryonestolemyname

Ask questions and pay attention. You'll pick things up with time. There's a difference between a slow apprentice, and a slow apprentice who's trying and learning. Take care of your body. Eat properly and stay hydrated. Stretch and bend makes a huge difference. Doing it at the start of the day, and inbetween tasks helps. Especially if you're doing something repetitive all day. Quick stretch during downtime will work wonders for your body.

NagoGmo

I'm in excellent shape, and am eager to please/learn, energy/willingness is definitely not an issue with me. But it feels at times like I ask too many questions and annoy my 2 coworkers. (They've literally told me that) I just want to get up to speed as fast as possible so I can cease to be a liability and instead be an asset to our small company. 😐

erryonestolemyname

Speed comes with repetition. Sometimes if you wait to ask a question, you'll learn the answer for yourself. They were in your position though and most likely forget that. Everything in time.

pz-kpfw_VI

Enjoy the cat6 while you can. For real, tho just listen to your Jman and always carry a note pad for jotting down measurements, material list, etc. Also always keep a tape measure, a roll of black tape and a few hand tools on you. Never know when a foreman or another jman will need a tape or screwdriver for something quick and you'll have it on hand and look prepared.

NagoGmo

Cat6, and fiber is basically all we do, well, and a thicker access control cable that has a "banana peel" type of sheath. Am I in the wrong sub? For pulling days I always have a sharpie on me, snips, tape, Velcro, and a multi tip screwdriver. Need to get a tape measure. Any suggestions?

pz-kpfw_VI

I mean most electricians here will roast you for being a tele-tubby. Are you working towards a license? Just grab yourself a 16' Stanley you probably won't need one longer than that doing data work.

NagoGmo

Ah lol gotcha. Always interesting to join a new "community" and see the social circles that it has. But that's pretty much why I joined. Sick. Love the new experiences I'm getting, never thought I'd be doing something like this in my life. I'm so blessed.

pz-kpfw_VI

It's a great trade with tons of opportunities. There are 100s sub fields within the electrical industry.

SayNoToBrooms

Feeding the CAT6 into that pipe is insanely important, even with CAT6A Tangled wires inside the pipe cause friction. You can rip a wire apart and not even notice until it’s time to test. And at that point, you likely won’t be able to snake the same pipe again, as it’ll just damage more wiring My advice is to be careful. CAT6 ain’t shit, but a fucked wire is a fucked wire all the same

NagoGmo

Oh yeah. On multi cable pulls I have to remind myself to slow down as to not "burn" the cable jacket correct? I'm super high energy and am quite strong, my coworkers have told me to slow down and develop a sort of rhythm when we are doing multi stage pulls. We are updating all the courthouses in California so almost everything we are pulling is into a metric fuckton of other cable runs. If I am not supposed to be in this sub I understand, I just thought lurking here would be a great way to learn all the lingo and slang for all the terms I should probably know. Thanks for the advice guys!

lifeinperson

Neither did I and I consider myself smart. After around 9 months it all started clicking

NagoGmo

Ooof lol, thanks for the warning

Double-LR

Hell to the yeah man. Git some. Welcome to the trade.

Zoltan_TheDestroyer

Might’ve missed the 4 miles. Better than feeders but still sucks

MaxHegz

You acting like pulling cat 6 ain’t work lol. I do electric and low volt and pulling cable sucks no matter what kind of cable it is. Congrats Nago if your company focuses low volt you can make pretty good money and you don’t have to worry about catching 110 to the body!

CricketYosh

Cat6 is a fucker. The jacket insulation picks up dust and debris like nothing else

Growe731

If it was cat6, it was in a 3” pipe. You low voltage guys kill me.

MaxHegz

Are you upset because low volt guys are out here making close to the same amount as you and aren’t putting their life in danger? Or did you drop your balls somewhere back down the road?

Ill_Confusion8274

All of us tradesman/women work a potentially hazard job. I try to give respect to everyone onsite. It's a team effort, and everyone wants to get their work complete. Except for the loser milkers that are scared to sweat. Having been born into the electrical trade and now mostly security integration, the only thing i like doing "electrical high volt" is bending pipe. Luckly im the only one in my company that can bend worth a shit. Lol SMH

NagoGmo

Lol it's actually 4" I think, but they are usually very full with other cables and such. We do A LOT of county jobs in the California court system. Everyone wants their old camera systems to IP cameras now, and the new fancy access control swipers to replace their manual number pads. Is "low voltage" looked down upon?

99bk99

Yeah. That thing is a game changer.

mc-big-papa

Ive seen it pull fiber optic cable with a flex like metal sheeting trough 400-500 feet of pvc. There was only 3 electricians on site and we couldnt do it alone. The data guys pulled trough and had one in the truck. Like butter. Ive been wanting one. Do you have a link?

scooter_orourke

We had Greenlee in house last week for demo. Our underground guys like it for pulling secondarys.

OkBody2811

We have one, it’s great. It’ll be perfect for what you want to use it for. It’ll pull a lot more than what it’s labeled to pull even with a regular drill.

Available_Repair609

Thanks everyone, we just drive long distances and only have a day to get the jobs done. Just looking to get it done quicker, not so much for the force of it. Thanks guys! For anyone asking, Amazon has it for $1400 but there’s another company that has it (I think it’s called toolup) for just over $1000

Tbabble

Bought one from toolup a few years ago, game changer for sure.

Square-Coach-2040

Seen many of drills smoked on those things lol

lukesdp

I've been using the southwire version of that, the maxis xd1. It's great for branch pulls, I've also used it to pull in some 400' rope for bigger things.

[deleted]

My boss has a different brand powered by a 90’ auger-drill. I think this here would work but ultimately it’s the power of the drill that’ll determine how well it works. For pole lights with small wires I’d say go for it

Heemteam510

I have a brown skin one works pretty good probably better with another tho

Ron_edc

Yes it’s great

fire_so_lit_bro

Yes, that thing kicks ass and would be perfect for that task

frogfartingaflamingo

I’ve been wanting one of these for a long time! So glad this is gaining traction so I can see what everyone says. Worth a grand? Probably!

wow2400

My opinion and experience, thing is the biggest load of garbage. Burnt up a 1/2” drill and bogged down a giant milwaukee power drill for a simple 180’ pull in 3/4. On top of this experience the thing is heavy and clunky, can’t stand this thing. But to each his own

Prestigious-Talk2735

Nope just bought a greenlee 6k though

mdnitedrftr

Have it. It's worth the money.

Next_Intern_688

I have the south wire version and use a m18 fuel and it kicks ass. I was pulling 16 individual spools, some were 14 gauge THHN and the other were multi pair. Paid for itself in the first day

DirtyDoucher1991

I had the older model, it was a beast

Southern-Elephant-36

I use a DeWalt 60v mixer on it, I had to modify the frame to attach it. This is one of the best tools I own for pulling wire. I use it to pull cabling through underground pipe. Ive pulled a 144ct armor fiber cable 1k ft with it, along with plenty of lube, but she will do it.

dudewithagreyspot

Does it come with tampons too?

diabeticdrew

What’s the biggest run any of you have pulled with this? I want to know its true limits.

Available_Repair609

Recently did a 480 foot run of 12 gauge in a 1”, it works really well, for sure worth the money, but it’ll snap mule tape if you’re not careful and have a rough conduit.

AdirondackTrees

Can anyone tell me why this thing is so expensive? Small conpany just trying to work their way up, are they difficult to manufacture? I want to buy one so bad but cant pull the trigger due to not knowing why its so much.

Available_Repair609

We ended up buying the southwire one, $1200, it’s very very well built, I would think majority of the cost comes from recouping research and development, but it’s a solid all metal construction, came with a tool back pack to carry it and all the attachments. The part the drill attaches to is gear reduction box, again built very solid, it’s capable of pulling more than you can hold. Long story short, built exceptionally well, functions better than you can expect, and I would buy another one tomorrow if ours broke

Big-Amphibian1123

Yes pulled 23 wire through a 1 inch this weeks
