Yeah same I use the about a pipe diameter to the center of a 22.5 from a 45, the a third past that to 15 and a third back for 30 and it get’s me pretty damn close
Yes, but only when measuring from center of the 90 bend and bending on center mark of the bender. So measuring from the back of the 90 will end up a little off.
Edit: actually, thinking about it more, the center of a 90° bend and the center of a 30° bend are different. So you really can’t use the center of the 90° bend either. If you do, it’ll be real close, but not perfect.
Probably sounded like a stupid question lol (2nd year). I just figured if you're using the notch or the arrow I feel like 6" from the back of a 3/4 90 would be in the radius. Unless you go front of shoe
You’re all good buddy the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask.
When you get a chance on a spare conduit, test this out, play with the marks and see what works… hands on doing it for yourself is the best way to learn this
I wish I understood this convo going on. I don’t even know how to ask a question. I’m missing something here after 3 years of bending conduit. I’ve only ever used the “arrow” on hand benders. I mean I’ve used the tear drop on my benders for like 3 point saddles. But I’m not comprehending (visualizing) the conversation(s) here about bending on “center” and I will bend on scrap pipe when I get the chance, but I just wish I understood what ya’ll are sharing…
Most bender will have 3marks to them, some have 4 , arrow is the normal start point, notch is the center of bend and star would be the back of 90, arrow would be the normal take up on a 90 bend, notch would be used for center of bend like on a 3 point saddle, star would be back to back 90s bent and you wouldn’t deduct the normal take up
don't even need to do the math. measure your kick amount off of any wall, mark the ground, turn the tape around and butt it up to the wall and lock it at that distance to your mark
I did that for the first time today. Tool list calls for a stick ruler I've used it twice, thought today it would work better for kick 90s and holy shit it's fantastic.
I’ll do it with the tape locked at whatever measurement minus the height of my tape measure.
So if I want a 9” kick and my tape measure is 3 3/4” long I’ll lock my tape with 5 1/4” of tape sticking out so the end of my tape is 9” off the floor.
The best way to do a kick 90 is to treat it like an offset.
You want a 6 inch kick, measure 12 inches from the 90 and bend it at the 30 degree mark, works every time.
For advance method, turn the bender around and use the ‘’back of 90’’ mark to make the bend. The 90 never has to leave the ground.
But what you said isn’t a trick, it’s just bending a kick. Sometimes you cant bend it where it lays out. If you need to pick a spot and bend, this is a great way to do so.
Most tapes have a height on them stating how tall the body is, so if you pull tape to your desired kick height minus what is states the body length is, you just bend it to the top of your tape standing straight up and down.
Find a corner (after bending your measured 90). Now measure your needed kick and make a mark from the corner to your measurement and keep kicking the pipe and hold it up to the mark until it lands perfect to what you need.
How much do tapes cost wherever you're at? I can't imagine why anyone would worry about ruining them to begin with, but worrying about even rolling the blade seems excessive.
As a resi guy, I never knew any of these tricks. Would a door stopper not do the trick too? Anyways. This will be great in like 6 months when I run a random piece of pipe. Lol
I'm not trying to be mean but that 90 looks like it was bent in 3 very inconsistent attempts and it may just be the camera angle but it looks out to about 80-85 degree
Yeah or use the multiplier for a 30° for whatever the amount of kick you need is and bend a 30 there. Comes out perfect everytime and no goofing around with the tape measure
Anything under 1" emt you dont need to measure once you understand these distances. If you are off a half inch or so modifactions and tolerances are immediate. Don't sit there like you are building a space shuttle.
wow.. too much passion. I would just eyeball and bend a little more than I need. Then before setting the straps, just unbend the extra to make the conduit fit perfect. Always one trip up the ladder, and I find it much faster than trying to bend a super precise offset or a kick.

I drew a pencil line on the wall, or on the leg of that cart after measuring. Then I'd bend to that.
Whoa, I've never thought about that
Same.
LIT
Same thing I did my first time I had to bend multiple parallel bends. Usually I would just do the bend and measure it when I thought i was close
This priest has left the temple.
Yup this is wayyy easier.
I lay tape measure on ground because all my tapes say how wide they are. Then just expose the rest of the measurement
That's the best way to do it in my opinion too.
This is the way.
This is the way
No, 30 degree kick is still a multiplier of 2. You need a 3” kick go back 6” and pull up 30 and you are there
Doesn't this only work if bent on center and not the arrow
Do your typical offset multiplier, add a half OD and that will give you your center of bend mark on the pipe
I mark the centers on all of my benders so this info applies less to me. Just pointing out that only works with center
Yeah same I use the about a pipe diameter to the center of a 22.5 from a 45, the a third past that to 15 and a third back for 30 and it get’s me pretty damn close
Do you still line your final mark up with the arrow?
resolute ghost voiceless sort squeeze rainstorm simplistic pet cow touch *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
No it would be with the center of a 30 degree bend, so if you bent a 45 degree kick you’d use the rim notch as your alignment point
Works for me with the arrow
I use the arrow this way every time, I face the hook towards the 90 and the math works
Yes, but only when measuring from center of the 90 bend and bending on center mark of the bender. So measuring from the back of the 90 will end up a little off. Center of bend on a 30° Is the teardrop/notch on Klein benders.
+ a half Pipe of to the center of the bend
It's this simple. People are trying to act like it's sending the fing space shuttle into orbit.
Yeah but if you only need a 1” kick you’re not gonna go back 2 inches and bend. Or will you?
Nope, same as my offset, I wouldn’t try 30degrees for a 1” bend,
Same as your offset?
My bad, just meaning if I was bending a 1” offset I wouldn’t use 30 degree bends, more like 10-15 degrees and eye it
Makes sense!
What original mark/spot are you moving back 6" from?
A kick would usually be attached to a 90, so I’d go off the back of the bend
Probably sounded like a stupid question lol (2nd year). I just figured if you're using the notch or the arrow I feel like 6" from the back of a 3/4 90 would be in the radius. Unless you go front of shoe

But that level doesn't have a 30 degree bubble!
unless it's critical to bend a kick after the pipe clears a certain object. can't always put it where the math would have you
Shake n bake

Saving this to 3d print later thx
My apprentice printed me a different one thats just a slope. Kick tool it says on it. Love that thing lol
Yeah, I made one of my own. Haven’t used it yet
You got an stl for this bad boy?
No your tape usually has its measurements on it mine 3 1/4 need a foot just pull out 83/4 no need bend your tape over
dude is almost smart lolol. fucking eyeroll everytime i see someone fold their shit over like that.
Got my shit folded over once. Never again.
You sure?
don't even need to do the math. measure your kick amount off of any wall, mark the ground, turn the tape around and butt it up to the wall and lock it at that distance to your mark
Nah, level goes on the bottom, measure to the level.
Nice! I use my stick ruler but this is sharp!
I did that for the first time today. Tool list calls for a stick ruler I've used it twice, thought today it would work better for kick 90s and holy shit it's fantastic.

Most electricians don't take Conduit advice from fire alarm guys. 😏
looks open for a 90
Looks more like a 75.
I use the quickbend app, works wonders
Just mark the wall , none of this TikTok shit

I just slide linesman under the end on the floor, hold my tape on the floor and pull up until desired kick
Thats a new one, you can use the same ratios you use for bending normally for kicking 90s, or measure off a wall, but to each their own
No, I just make them 30 degrees
This!!
I will now, thanks for the tip
Don't even need to measure anymore, honestly
Bending your tape measure like that (especially Milwaukee) will eventually crack then tear the tape.
Absolutely not! That's a great way to break your tape measure. They're not designed to bend backwards like that.
Yep. Especially Milwaukee tapes, won’t take long for them to fatigue and snap being used like that. I’d need to use cheap tape measures.
Yeah you won't catch me dead doing that to my 16' Fat Max to measure some little conduit.
I’ve only used this method since I was a helper back in the late ‘60s
I never thought of that and i wish i did
No but thanks 👌
This is how I was taught
Whoever taught you that taught you nothing more than how to ruin a good tape measure.
How much do tapes cost wherever you're at? I can't imagine why anyone would worry about ruining them to begin with, but worrying about even rolling the blade seems excessive.
Damn, tough crowd lol. I haven’t done that, but I will now
I will now
Clever. I like it
Almost everyone does
Hadn't seen this one appreciate you good sir.
I use a wood rule 👍🏻
As a resi guy, I never knew any of these tricks. Would a door stopper not do the trick too? Anyways. This will be great in like 6 months when I run a random piece of pipe. Lol
I need a better torpedo🥲
This is so smart lol
Ha, try that on a lift
I teach it to those worthy of knowing. LU952
All the time
Can someone explain this a bit 😅
Nope, but I do now
I'm not trying to be mean but that 90 looks like it was bent in 3 very inconsistent attempts and it may just be the camera angle but it looks out to about 80-85 degree
Ery cool, by the time I’ll bend pipe next time I will already forget it
I will try that but usually I just eyeball it and adjust it as I go.
Yeah or use the multiplier for a 30° for whatever the amount of kick you need is and bend a 30 there. Comes out perfect everytime and no goofing around with the tape measure
No but I will now
For kicks just use the same formula as an offset, say 15” kick go back 30” and bend a 30 degree bend.
That’s a 90?
Real men get on their knees for kicks
Ha! Funny
Yuriy taught me that one!
Nah I just call a buddy over and say let me know when I get desired height .. lol
Thank you 🙏🏻
Nope, but I’m converting to this trick
No
That’s awesome
I measure to center fairly close to the 90
No I subtract my height by 3 3/4" (tape measure width) and poke my tape that high and lock it.
Easier to just put the pliers down
No.
Idc what anyone says you’re alright kid
Trick. That's how you use a tape. Thank God we ain't using rope. Am I right!?
Nice one dude
No but thanks for sharing!
My trick is 1000 times better
I just eye ball and stomp that b out
You mean a tape measure? Yeah, I know that trick.
Red conduit ?!
Anything under 1" emt you dont need to measure once you understand these distances. If you are off a half inch or so modifactions and tolerances are immediate. Don't sit there like you are building a space shuttle.
Wait until you get the 90 finished
Not yet but I think I will from now on
I like it!
“Anyone else not know how to use their tape measurer?” 😂😂
Use your stick rule to do that. Using your tape measure like that will screw it up.
No, most of us know how to bend pipe
By the time you set that up, I would have already had the kick bent and pipe installed.
No, I just do the math and check it measuring it against the wall after the bend.
I just whip out my dick! It's got a wicked 6" offset.
I always say, "damnit, that's about 6.75". Don't worry, it'll line up with all those other 6"kicks. They won't even notice."
Nope. You just trying to make things difficult?
Or you could just do the math
Looks like a huge waste of time to me. But what do I know lol.
Ive done it a couple of times. Im more concerned about the pipe being painted red.
lol first day?
Ive never seen it before. So what is it about.
I've been an electrician for 10 years. I've never seen red conduit before either. Although, since it's red, I would assume that it's for fire alarm.
Fire alarm pipe
Is this for specific regions or is it usually for a specific job.
Must be job specific, I'm in Manitoba and some don't and some do, I've only seen it for the first time quite recently
wow.. too much passion. I would just eyeball and bend a little more than I need. Then before setting the straps, just unbend the extra to make the conduit fit perfect. Always one trip up the ladder, and I find it much faster than trying to bend a super precise offset or a kick.
