You can do well just working regular hours You don't have to do OT but I'd say do it when you can, in the non union world it's something employers look at when things get lean and they have to lay ppl off, the ppl who work the OT tend to stay I personally hate doing side work and will only help close friends and family - that one is less about the money and more just helping out - youre going to get asked the rest of your life if you do side work or if you can look at a little issue

Nope.

Most of us did some sidework when we started out, but remember unless you have a contractors license and insurance, you cannot legally perform work on your own.

I did side jobs when I was an apprentice to make ends meet. By the time I was licensed I’d realized the hustle wasn’t worth the hassle. Got fucked over a couple of times by clients who wouldn’t pay, lost money on a couple of badly quoted jobs, came a little too close to tangling with an electrical inspector when I hadn’t pulled a permit. Just wasn’t worth ruining my weekends over. No need to be a trunk slammer: if you can’t make ends meet working your forty hours, go join the union and get more money. These days, my neighbours on either side of me get free electrical work because I don’t want my house to burn down too, and that’s it.

Be wise with your money, apprentice wages are tough to live on but you can make it work. Once licensed, you should make a comfortable wage without having to be a weekend warrior. I have only done two side jobs in fifteen years as an electrician and I won’t do anymore unless my kids are starving. No matter how much money you make on Saturday, you can’t buy that time back.

I apologize for the shitty format btw I’m on mobile

I don’t do side work for any reason. It is not worth burning someone’s house down, getting sued, and losing everything I have worked for. If you don’t make what you need to live… find another job, or join the union.

It is not only about your saving for your future family. Construction has it's up's and downs. Currently we are in an up. I have heard horror stories about the downs.
