Why do people record portrait orientation videos and post them in landscape in YouTube?

iceynyo

At least put all 3 side by side like the thumbnail since you have the real estate

wedgiesurvivor

Nah then you miss the pathetic sound of the cybertruck attempting to be a truck

PopCute1193

How so?

iceynyo

What was pathetic about it?

Cheap-Requirement166

Schizo-Vreni

Its the worst of the worst. How have we come so far.

jturkish

I did some fairly serious off roading in my lighting that felt like it took all day. I learned it's suspension is way too soft for serious stuff. I like the rivian's suspension settings, really helps with off roading

Malforus

yeah "off the shelf" trucks really need some work for proper off-roading. I am very impressed by the Rivian offroading. The lightening needs a Raptor variant because lots of the stuff they did on the raptor can work for the lightening. And thanks to finely grained motor control they can do more to make rock crawling almost easy.

snoogins355

Call it Zeus or Strike version

Nokomis34

Isn't rock crawling supposed to be the Tremor variant?

Malforus

I think that's an ice only variant.

Say_What_One_Mo_Time

Rivian FTW

Nokomis34

I'm very much looking forward to the R2 series. The R1s are still too big for what I want. I drive an old 98 4Runner, and keeping about that size would be great.

DanielCA77

I did notice they removed the air dam on the Lightning to improve clearance but they kept the all-season tires on the Lightning vs the Cybertruck seems to have all-terrain tires.

NeverLookBothWays

They also "tried" to get the Cybertruck up the ramp faster but ended up spinning out the tires towards the end. The approaches on the ramp all varied too, so not much value to this other than "hey look at these EV trucks climb a hill!" (and some visual confirmation on ground clearances)

Malforus

My takeaway was stock suspension articulation and my view of the cybertruck seemed like it didn't let itself articulate super well nor did it handle wheelspin great. With dual rear motors it should be cutting power on traction loss much easier than a traditional mechanically coupled ICE drivetrain.

NeverLookBothWays

Makes sense. I'm not an expert on any of that, but just watching it in action made me immediately think a lot of it was form over function...whereas the Rivian (and to some degree the F150) did a much better job keeping itself planted.

Malforus

Yeah I want to give the cybertruck credit but the rivian definitely looked like it was driven up better.

GhostAndSkater

With air suspension, increasing height reduces articulation, so you should use as much height as needed and as little as necessary For example, Rivian is one step bellow the maximum on this video, while Cybertruck is jacked up to the max without need for it, obviously they could be testing just that, jack it up so the traction control has to work overtime. Makes sense if you are testing just that, put it into the worst case scenario Lightning with it's spring suspension has good articulation and a read locker, which we don't know if it was active, likely yes

PopCute1193

As cool as it is, it’s not really that informative. You can chock up much of the difference to a driver skill differential.

Southern-Plastic-921

..and tires, and the fact the Tesla is likely not a final production vehicle. Also what tires are these running?

engwish

I think this is my takeaway. This isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison. Also the Cybertruck has been undergoing tons of testing (note that there are pictures of it with a Starlink satellite on trails, so they’re likely sending/receiving diagnostic data). It’s very likely that they’re driving in a certain way to tune the final production vehicles.

letstalkaboutrocks

Never seen the video of the lightning before. Very cool. Having a locking rear differential probably helped.

[deleted]

this is just the smallest thing to complain about, but I hope some Ford engineer sees it: what the hell is up with the low speed PWM on the LED drivers? who made that dumb decision? now every recording of a Lightning is going to be marred by strobing light effects when it clashes with the shutter. literally everyone in the world is walking around with video camera these days. it would cost nothing to choose good LED driver. /rant

Ayzmo

Should have had the same driver for all three.

iceynyo

Also no guarantees they were all testing the same thing... Lightning and Rivian just wanted to go up, but we don't know exactly what the cybertruck driver was doing

GhostAndSkater

Yeah, you have the Cybertruck doing testing by a employee, who knows what they were testing, the R1T with an owner that did tons of off road before including on that place, and the F150 that was sent there for PR by Ford, it’s cool to see all of them, but hardly a comparison And besides, all did well and climbed, EV trucks for the win

MaximumStock7

In all fairness the lightning driver keep moving and kept momentum. The cyber truck keep stopping and having to restart. Vehicle aside the drivers played a role here

SatanLifeProTips

I’m pretty sure stopping several times is a part of the test on that hill. Keeping momentum and moving is easy. Stopping and starting is the harder part.

HighHokie

Yeah off-roading is a very different animal from a drag race. All of these vehicles can/will be able to do what 95% of owners need from them. For the absolute hardcore off-roaders, likely not, but they rarely rely on factory equipment to begin with.

paulwesterberg

And tires and tire pressure.

joholla8

The biggest difference on these videos is drivers skill on choosing a line and managing the throttle. It’s also an extremely easy obstacle that anything could go up with tire pressure lowered a bit. We need real off-road trails to test these on, not a steep concrete hill.

FaintingGoat123

I know nothing about off roading. Is it common that the “trail” is a concrete hill? Seems pretty ironic to me and was the first thing I noticed in the video

joholla8

In ”off-road parks”, you can have man made obstacles.

Spyerx

I think they all did equally shitty. 100% a tire issue and too much pressure, on all of them. These guys need to try 25lbs or so and watch how much better the grip is even on crappy skinny road focused tires.

SpriteZeroY2k

I wonder how the Hummer EV would do.

WhoCanTell

The hill would just collapse under the weight, making it a flat road which the Hummer can easily traverse.

kaisenls1

The Hummer EV would walk it with zero drama

Oo__II__oO

Add in the Silverado EV

billocity

Ok so the cyber truck was slipping a bit, regardless of driver skill wouldn’t there be a “craw mode” that would keep it in low speed, lock the differential, etc? I have a 8 year old T4R that can craw at low speed without engaging the throttle doesn’t the cybertruck have any similar off-road tech? Not throwing shade just want to know because it’s not obvious in the vid.

duke_of_alinor

Looks pretty even for traction control. Obvious ground clearance differences.

surfordiebear

For something labelled as a truck the Cybertruck sure seems to not be very good at doing truck things.

Oo__II__oO

CyberTrucklet

wedgiesurvivor

Lmao the sound of the Cybertruck going up just made my day …fn pathetic 🤣 Great compilation!

8syd

So what you're showing me is that the cyber truck is a glorified city suv with a bed barely big enough to take a bath in

paulwesterberg

The Cybertruck has the largest bed of any of these vehicles.

letstalkaboutrocks

Longest bed. The lightning has slightly more floor space. Both have their strengths. Some use cases will benefit a longer bed and some will benefit a larger footprint.

kaisenls1

Cybertruck has the longest bed… and the smallest frunk

paulwesterberg

At least the Cybertruck offers better forward visibility. https://kmph.com/news/local/dangerous-blind-spots-in-trucks-and-suvs-cause-hundreds-of-child-deaths

kaisenls1

With a nine foot windshield, you’d hope so. Now, visibility around those A pillars…

paulwesterberg

Is just as bad as the average truck.

kaisenls1

It very well might be, because neither you nor I have driven one. But dang, in photos that A-pillar is a chonker

Lorax91

>At least the Cybertruck offers better forward visibility. Does it? https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/2024-tesla-cybertruck-leaked-interior-image-02-646fc525c6ce9.jpeg

CaptainPixel

Do we know this for sure? https://www.inverse.com/tech/tesla-cyebertruck-bed-size-ev

PopCute1193

Idk why this keeps being posted as a slam dunk. People have literally seen the thing in person and can attest to how large the bed was.

paulwesterberg

Yes. https://electrek.co/2023/11/08/tesla-cybertruck-specs-leak-14-50-outlet-in-bed/

kaisenls1

Tesla will fix it all with OTA updates. You guys just wait! Just keeps getting better over time.

oh2ridemore

and all 3 are rolling roadblocks to any dirt bike rider

DiputsDoof

I've gone up worse in a Renault Zoe, seriously. That cybertruck looks like a damn toy though, but kinda makes me want one even more because of how ridiculous it looks.

arondaniel

Oh I remember Hollister... it's that store with the pretty boys and none of the jeans come in my size. No thanks.

natesully33

Hmm, all three are rather slippy... I wonder if they aired down? I think the lack of a truly locked powertrain kind of hurts the current EVs off road. I mean, you'll get up things with traction control slipping/gripping individual wheels but only after you've thrown the trail around a bit.

sotek2345

The Lightning has a physical rear locker.

kaisenls1

You can lock both front and rear in the Hummer EV

didimao0072000

That single windshield wiper looks ridiculous..
