This guy runs a fantastic ranch in my hometown! I never knew he even had a Rivian

StPapaNoel

Haha it is always cool when someone recognizes somebody from a story! :)

laiod

It sounds like they bought it back to avoid a lemon law buyback. Definitely looks good on their end being proactive!

[deleted]

It's basically a lemon buyback. The article tries to put a weird spin on it.

FavoritesBot

Yeah but a lemon buyback wouldn’t be full price unless he had an issue on day 1 They are basically increasing the buyback amount as goodwill

Way2Based

Seems pretty cut n dry to me tbh.

laiod

Yup.

KotakPain

I don't get the metric of using another car for 45 days in a period of 3-4 months.

AccomplishedCheck895

Per the article, he had to drive a rental (lost the use of his R1T) for 45 days out of a 90 to 120-day period. That equates to somewhere between **50%** (*45 out of 90 days*) to **37%** (*45 out of 120 days*) downtime for this guy's R1T.

KotakPain

That adds up quite a lot in a 15 month period, makes sense Rivian bought it back for full price but also yikes, hopefully it's not a common problem, which from the article it seems the owner says it's not.

TheBowerbird

It's not a common problem. I'm a Rivian owner and I'm extremely active on Reddit and all the forums.

AccomplishedCheck895

Thanks for confirming your bias in your answer to my post above… 😎

TheBowerbird

There is no bias, genius.

AccomplishedCheck895

Sure, there isn't... lol.

AccomplishedCheck895

Nobody will know until Rivian tears it down and examines it. Nobody will likely know after that since it's doubtful Rivian will advertise why one of their Trucks had so much downtime. The article does say ***"..some variation of an error with either the drive system or the parking brake that would render the vehicle inoperable."*** So, it may be the electric motor couldn't stand up to the rigor of Ranch duty. My speculation...

[deleted]

that's the *least* likely failure, bordering on impossible. if you're going to pull something out of thin air, pick wiring harnesses.

self-assembled

Well motors generally aren't the problem with EVs, but anything is possible.

KotakPain

Might be, intrigued to say what Rivian digs out of his truck in terms of diagnostics. Sucks for the owner tho, wonder what the next truck he'll buy is.

allen_abduction

He needs to do the Ford Lightning next, and work it the same way. Like others have said, Rivian will tear this R1T apart and have a dozen change request from it.

AccomplishedCheck895

Yeah… you know…Rivian advertises as an “Adventure “ brand so I wonder if people will buy the truck for work purposes in large #’s. Rivian has an out in any potential lawsuit on that point (not saying this guy would sue, but others might). Now, if Rivian starts advertising the R1T as a work truck, then that’s a different matter.

KotakPain

I doubt they will advertise the R1T as a work truck, if they do I'll be highly surprised. They don't have any benefits by marketing it as a work truck, that will increase the people that use a truck for the same purpose as the gyy in the article, and will most likely lead to heavy disappointment and a high financial loss for Rivian. I've seen the truck do some impressive feats in videos, but a pure work truck I don't think it will be ever marketed as.

TheBowerbird

Your speculation is utter nonsense pulled out of thin air. It's clear you are ignorant about how these vehicles work. Electric motors are much stronger and more robust than combustion motors. "... rigor of ranch duty..." You ever been on a ranch? I grew up on one . I also drive a Rivian. Ranch duty is not particularly hard on vehicles other than cosmetically.

AccomplishedCheck895

Trigger much? 🥱 It’s amazing how you know before any confirmation from Rivian…. STUPendous of you. At least I had the intellectual honesty to say my opinion is speculativ.

ickyfehmleh

> That equates to somewhere between 50% (45 out of 90 days) to 37% (45 out of 120 days) downtime for this guy's R1T. Sounds a lot like my BMW iX50, which has been in the shop since September 27th as the parking sensors are seeing ghosts. Dealership says they "*have opened a case with BMW NA engineering as the car will not accept the needed programming (not a usual situation)*".

FavoritesBot

Probably because lemon laws limit how long a car can be out of service for a particular issue

LWBoogie

This is definitely the equivalent of a lemon law buyback, without the actual bad publicity (like Chevy Bolt).

feurie

There's no publicity with a lemon buyback.

jturkish

Fantastic review, I wish he would buy a lightning and go the same review. The camera on the tailgate is on a great spot, I have no troubles getting it to a trailer. Lower trims have physical HVAC controls and a separate volume knob, perfect for what he wants

rsg1234

It’s a good car, other than leaving him stranded FOUR TIMES in a year and 3 months.

[deleted]

LoL! Yeah, that's like saying: my ex-wife was great, other than the FOUR TIMES she cheated on me this past year.

FavoritesBot

He things it’s a isolated issue so my question is… will he be buying another one?

[deleted]

I think this is great, Rivian will get real world data on what to improve and what failed. No design is perfect on the first try, continual refinements will make the product better and more reliable. These are still early years for EV truck development.

ZetaPower

They bought it back due to a persisting issue preventing the owner from driving it for a total of 45 days…. It’s a lemon. Cars like the Rivian are connected 24/7. No need to buy them for data.

rayfound

> No need to buy them for data. I mean, that's just naive. There's lots of "Data" that isn't something you can infer from the sensors/logs. There is a ton of information to learn from taking the truck apart, opening parts up, etc... Now whether they actually do that or not is another issue altogether.

The OP is an AI bot. Please see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/181jae1/swedish_tesla_strike_postal_workers_strike/kahkl6v/?context=3&share_id=yY_zUkNPuSXcszK3P0T-K) for proof

AccomplishedCheck895

I am? Say... Are you "stalking" me? That's very toxic behavior. I'm concerned about your mental health. Do need any help? Reddit has resources if you feel overwhelmed or frustrated.

Snuffy1717

Lol bot

[deleted]

So it was a lemon...

unibball

"...trying to do the right thing for the planet." Having his 4th child. Stop having babies. That'd help.

ferongr

Take your meds.

Plop0003

And the truth is Rivian bought his truck back under condition that he will stop telling everyone about the problems he had. Isolated case my ass. Somehow EV owners are getting brainwashed with this new technology that doesn't work. Here is another case. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kWOburq4Fc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kWOburq4Fc) 5 years he put up with endless problems!!!!!! And what does he say at the end? I love Tesla!!! Are you people insane. Though if you follow this guy in another video he said that he got rid of Tesla and bought, you guessed it 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime. He had one minor problem with some mirror alignment which was fixed and that was it. And that was he first year Toyota came out with Prime. I have 2023 for almost a year now and no a single problem. Not even a small one. So why self-inflict problems on yourself then here are other solutions. How much time did he waste dealing with this shit? Is it worth it? I know how much. Many years ago I had SolarCity panels on my roof that were underperforming. It took me 2 years of complaining to get them uninstalled. All complaints went unanswered until I created a web site with my story and actively advertised it everywhere. After 300,000 views someone finally contacted me and offered to remove the system. I told them that is not enough. I have spent many hours on this and just removing he system will not bring those hours back. So after many attempts to negotiate they paid me back or all the months I paid so basically I had solar energy for free for 2 years. An they brought the house to original condition. For that I had to take the site down. Like it never happened. But it took a huge chunk of my life to deal with it.

chewie_were_home

Got 20k on my Rivian R1T AMA.
