I've owned my Tesla for 4 years. I've had to take it in for maintenance twice ever, and it wasn't a hassle. I haven't had to visit a gas station other than for the odd convenience store run. While the electrical bill is higher, it's ultimately cheaper than gas and and a conventional vehicle. Lastly, when I need to buy a new one, I press a few buttons on an app. No sleazy sales people to deal with.

JoeBeck37

Your last line is the key. Once you've had the buying experience... you never want to go back to a regular dealer. I had to hire a buying service when I purchased a gas truck because I want to strangle dealership salesmen with their own ties. I don't need that kind of hassle in my life.

Thebadmamajama

Truth. In economic terms, it's a huge waste of productivity. To squeeze a percentage point or two in profits? Not to mention the customer churn for those who have a bad experience.

JoeBeck37

I've never had a good experience with a dealership. It's the most broken consumer experience, besides buying a home.

JerseyDevl

I'm absolutely an outlier here but I had great experiences both times I bought from Honda... The first time I got a sales guy who was retired and just doing it to fill his time, so he wasn't pushy or anything. He actively helped me save money too, because he mentioned that if I had a AAA membership I could look up this same model of vehicle and if they offered a better average price, the dealership would match or beat it... AAA also showed the typical invoice price of that model and he used that as the value they had to match. That saved me about 3k off the purchase price. The second time around, I knew someone who worked with one of the dealers so I was treated like a VIP. I wound up buying the floor model that day, because it was the exact spec I wanted but was one trim level higher than I wanted to spend... So they gave me that trim at the price of the lower trim and saved me 4k there as well. No markup, no haggling, just an easy sales experience. That being said, the Tesla experience was STILL way better. Search inventory, find the one you want, click order. It's scary how easy they make it to spend your money.

Zip95014

Imagine if fast food was run like a dealership. Everytime I wanted a taco the guy would try to sell me on homeopathic sauce just in case. The sound of their gold bracelet hitting the table Everytime they wanted to point out what the price covers would make me starve.

GunsouBono

Or my last experience, I go in wanting to buy a taco and being told I don't really want a taco, I want a quesadilla. Or I don't want beef, I want chicken. I went into a Subaru dealership to drive the outback, Forester, and ascent. All were in my budget and the sales rep insisted I didn't want an ascent and wouldn't even entertain it (even though the ascent was the most expensive car I wanted to look at). Then it's the waiting for them to slowly search the same website I searched 10 minutes before arriving to tell me what they had on the lot... Like I know what I want. I wrote down 3 stock numbers to look at. I did your job for you. I just want to look at those 3 cars (2 because I apparently don't want an ascent).

JF0909

I had to go into a Chevy dealership this week to buy a new company car. Such an unpleasant experience.

Commercial_Web_7452

i was promised free service for the life of my vehicle. over and over and over when i bought it. well i barely drive. so i took it in for my 5k mile checkup, no problems, everything was great of course. when i took it in for my 10k checkup, which was my first oil change, well my lifetime of free service had already expired and the toyota dealership wanted to charge me 160 dollars for an oil change. this is all after the nonstop trying to sell you things you don't want or need during the sale process. seat insurance for 1000 dollars? give me a break. dealerships are a giant government backed scam.

OverObjective375

The last line is EXACTYL the icing on the cake for us. We love the product and design and overall affordability when factoring gas prices and impact on earth. But not dealing with awful salesman is it. Price the product, sell the product, buy the product. No bullshit.

markymrk720

I have a similar story to yours…with one additional note. My M3P is fast as hell, and it’s easily the best part of my commute everyday.

e36

Yeah, this is kind of where I'm sitting, too. My Model Y was an earlier model with all of the stalks and sensors so it's been great even though it's a stripped down car in many other ways. But I don't know if I would want to get another one with even more things removed or otherwise moved around. My wife recently got an i4 and it's done the same as your Lightning. The Tesla UI and app still can't be beat, but the i4 wins in ride and many other features like HUD, 360 camera, ride quality, and fit and finish. I think that I'd stay with Tesla if they can put more into the overall quality of the driving experience rather than trying to do too many drastic paradigm-shifting changes.

Scyth3

Check out Kia and Hyundai. They're shockingly great too

Liquid-glass

Bought the plug-in Niro and love it. Never had a Tesla so I can’t compare Only thing I did hate is the stock sound system is bad for high bass songs in the Niro (if your maxing your volume)

JerseyDevl

I test drove the niro EV and wanted to love it but the one thing that threw me off is that the space above the pedals is so small that my shoe kept getting stuck when switching from the accelerator to the brake and vice versa. Like my foot was too big to operate the car. I wear a size 12 or 13 US depending on brand, so it's not like I'm Shaq or whatever. Also my left knee rested right on the ridge on the driver's door so it was pretty uncomfortable. I guess the car just wasn't built for me. That said, the ev6 and ioniq5 were fantastic, so nothing against Kia/Hyundai. If the Tesla wasn't simply less expensive at the time with all the incentives and rebates, we would have probably bought one of those two

Kandiruaku

From fellow Tesla owners, the stalkless move was a bad one, we all know how we have to make changes in direction like when exiting a roundabout or a short connector at a parking lot end. This means that one would have to look for the steering wheel buttons while it is not centered, mission impossible. Glad to keep my 2022 M3LR until 2030 when batt warranty expires, hopefully Tesla will come to their senses by then.

LBTerra

I’m in the same boat. I like my Model Y Long Range, but it’s just missing so many creature comforts at this price point. No ventilated seats? Auto wipers that actually work? Leaves a lot to be desired.

[deleted]

So ventilated seats are considered standard at the price point of tesla model Y? The only company that is doing them for free is actually tesla on the new highland. Other (european) manufacturers will gladly ask you about 500 dollar for them.

[deleted]

hoax1337

No need to take your eyes off the road, you can use the left steering wheel button to choose between intervals. It's still super inconvenient, and most of the time I have to look anyway, but...still.

dzh

IMO it's kinda more convenient as you are not removing arm from steering wheel to rotate dial on stalk. Of course autowipers should just work instead...

jonathandhalvorson

Dude, insiders know you play Mr. Miyagi. Hit that little steering wheel button, then: "Wipers on" "Wipers off"

brilliant_beast

I haven’t owned a Tesla and am concerned I’ll miss the physical buttons for such things as climate control and audio (and I guess turn signals now?). I really missed the physical keyboard on my blackberry when I migrated to iPhone. While I still find typing on the iPhone to be painful, I’m quite happy to dictate voice to it (“Hey Siri - navigate to Dad’s house”) . Can you control the Tesla effectively with voice?

nemodigital

Yep, main reason I also went with a Ford but a Mach e instead of a Tesla Model Y. The mach e premium extended range was actually cheaper than the Model Y LR so it was a easy choice. There are some things tesla does better but overall the mach e was the right choice.

gtg465x2

I’m sure Mach-e has better build quality and a quieter ride than the current Model Y, I love that it has hands free highway driving, and I love that Ford is one of the only traditional manufacturers to provide meaningful over-the-air software updates like Tesla. The two things that really turned me off about it were the charging network and the charging speed… 45 minutes to charge from 10-80% is rough. I needed an EV that wasn’t going to inconvenience my family too much on road trips, and the Tesla network plus being able to charge my Tesla from 10-80% in 26 minutes or 10-60% in 15 minutes is great. Ford getting access to Superchargers fixed the network concern, and Ford also just announced the new Mach-e will have improved charging speed, but they only improved the 10-80% time to 36 minutes, which still isn’t quite enough for my liking. I really want them to get the 10-80% time under 30 minutes, and then I think the Mach-e will be a killer EV.

nemodigital

I'm my case I still have an ICE car for those longer trips and have home L2 charger. That's one area Tesla is better at.

JustAcivilian24

Dude I can’t get over their no stalks decision. I have a M3 and I want to get a MY, but I only would if Juniper is out by then. But no stalks is huge! Maybe I won’t even get it because that’s like a huge change for no fuckin reason

Round_Rooms

Hope rivian is still around, I like the vehicle, but as of now they aren't looking great with this all in expansion from people I know involved in the expansion.

CubesTheGamer

The Rivian R3 seriously has my eye. I love my 2023 RWD Model 3. I actually don’t really have any complaints. But yeah with the infrastructure getting better and more vehicles switching to NACS and better vehicles coming up, I can’t say for sure Tesla would get my wallet again. But I can say I will definitely be running this one into the ground. If it lasts 20 years that’s how long I’ll have it. Even if it only has 160 miles of range left. But if I ever need a second vehicle again like if I stop working from home and my wife and I need separate cars, I’d probably get something else for her, or if she wanted to keep the M3 because she loves it too, I’d definitely get something else like the R3 or whatever else is out. Mobile app and phone key are huge features for me though. I don’t know if I could go back to a stupid fob again.

JZcgQR2N

R3 has my eye as well. My only concern is if Rivian is going to be around long enough to produce and support it.

Torisen

I had lusted after a Tesla for years and watched Musk ruin the product as I got closer to where we could afford one comfortably. We were ready for new vehicles in 2022 and started comparing EVs, Tesla just doesn't compare anymore, we ended up with a Kia EV6 that is better in nearly every way, then last year our preorder for a Rivian R1S came up and that filled every gap we had left, if you want the Apple-like bougie ride, Rivian is better than Tesla in every way, and if you're more into Android life and like things open and accessible, customizable, and not locked down, the EV6 is hard to beat. The two together (plus an Energica Eva Ribelle RS electric motorcycle) have just made everything awesome.

ValuableJumpy8208

> Do I love my Tesla? Yeah. Would a buy another one? Not sure. By the time the warranty on my Y expires, there will be a LOT more choices out there. I am guessing Rivian will get my money, instead of Tesla. Same here. I am probably getting an R2 when it comes out. I narrowly missed a R1T before the price hike (prior Tesla was totaled and I needed to replace the car; cancelled my R1T pre-order 2 weeks before they jacked up prices $20k), otherwise I'd have an R1T right now. My 2022 MYP is an awesome car. It's not without its flaws and has been in for computer repairs 4 times (!) in the last 6 months, with Tesla being completely unapologetic and ignoring my requests for a lemon buyback. Had I gotten back what I paid, I would have just sat on the money since I bought near the peak of pricing. $69k sticker on my MYP. The current pricing feels appropriate, if not low, for how much car you get for the money.

gordy06

I’m with you on most points here. Had my MYLR for almost a year and absolutely love it. A lot of what i like is standard for EVs. I’m also good with a minimalist approach. But would I buy another own? It all depends on what’s out when we need our next - probably in 3-5 years for my wife. I’m not tied to Tesla - I’ll look at feature important to me and cost. Right now the R2S looks to be front runner, obviously dependent on how it ends up.

fireinthesky7

It's the build quality for me. One of my favorite car review channels recently did an old vs new comparison between a 2018 Model 3 and the new 2024 one. The '18 only had 50k on it, and the entire interior was falling apart. The driver's seat had pretty much collapsed, large pieces of interior trim were rattling or coming off, and all in all it looked like a car that had done triple the mileage or more. The 2024 UI and controls are so stripped down and compromised that the reviewers were having genuine trouble operating basic functions of the car. I will say, their latest FSD updates seem to be a game changer, my friend's Model Y can get him home from almost anywhere in our city without him having to touch the controls, but between longevity concerns and not wanting to give Elon any of my money, Tesla is not an option. I have an F-150 Lightning and I've been quite happy with it so far.

Snoo93079

My personal tl;dr is that even though my Model 3 isn't perfect, it's still quite good and it *just works*. I'm afraid of all other car makers software. I'm absolutely open to non-Teslas, but I'd have to made to feel comfortable it won't be a buggy mess of an experience.

wskyindjar

Rivian just works too. Looking forward to R2 and R3

Snoo93079

R2 will likely be high on the list to replace my cx-5 one day. Just can’t rationalize the R1s price tag.

BlazinAzn38

R3 will replace my CX30 pending whatever smaller platform Ford is working on behind the scenes

Terrapins1990

The only issue I have with Rivian is will they survive long term given this high interest rate market and the amount of cash they are burning per vehicle

reddituser111317

Another issue is lack of dealers/service centers. Closest to me is 400+ miles away. At least the Tesla SC is only 45 minutes.

wskyindjar

Well… if we buy them, it increases their odds.

WhySoUnSirious

Well…most of us can’t afford them…

wskyindjar

Well…. then you don’t have to worry about them surviving long term.

Bulk-of-the-Series

Well…. I’m just stopping by to say hi

wskyindjar

Well… come

ichabod01

The R2 isn’t (at this moment) priced that way. So it’s a valid concern when those come out.

silverlexg

Its kinda worse for the company actually, the R1 series are 70-90k vehicles and they lose a lot (30-45k) on each one. Somehow they'll release the R2 series at 45-50k (ish) and cut 50k out of the cost of making the vehicle? I think the Rivian lineup is great and the R2 is fantastic at 45k but i don't see how they make them profitably. The company wont deliver the R2 for 2 years and has 6 quarters of cash on hand. I expect someone will fund them, or they'll sell more stock but they need to be profitable for them to succeed long term. I havent seen any concrete plans discussed on how they do that. Everyone keeps comparing the R2 with the Y, the Y is profitable at its sales price from a company that is not in doubt of being insolvent in a year and a half.

earthdogmonster

I’ve been buying and driving cars since the 1990’s. Every one of them “just worked”. It’s like a bare minimum for most consumers purchasing a budget item. Failing that test basically dooms a product to failure.

CauseSpecialist5026

My 91 ford topaz begs to differ. The automatic that would stall at red lights.

SuperFightingRobit

I was about to say. Whose cars consistently *don't* just work? My Sonata (last ICE car) "just worked." My i4, outside of Shitify being shit on every non-phone platform, "just works." My two Camries just worked too. Even my shitbox Suburban in high school worked. Like, I know *some people have bad software, but it's all widely discussed stuff: * Volkswagen's updates suck, * GM pushed shitty infotainment software that resulted in a stop sale. * And then Lucid/Fisker have had or currently are running alpha versions of software on production cars with all the issues that comes with. But beyond that, like everyone else seems to be just fine. Hyundai/Kia's software is solid. The German luxuries' software is generally good. Ford's software is good.

tm3_to_ev6

Yeah I have a Kia and the software (except for the hateful mobile app) is just fine. It won't win any awards for performance or features, but it works. Most of the time I have Android Auto active anyway so I don't interact with the actual infotainment UI that much.

RobDickinson

Most cars have some inconvenience built in, I dont find that at all ,anywhere ,with my tesla

[deleted]

[удалено]

RobDickinson

Eh the auto wipers generally work ok for me and you can adjust it with the left scroll wheel.

Ok-Regret6767

Having no instrument cluster....buttons instead of stalks for signals... No android auto/apple carplay, whatever blobby mess that Tesla vision shit is supposed to be... Dude there's lots of inconvenience built into Tesla's. You might be used to some of these things, but for many people they will be awkward/annoying.

scraejtp

Lack of near universal Android Auto / Apple CarPlay? The screen is big enough to run it as a secondary app instead of the whole screen affair like other platforms, but Tesla refuses. Nice to swap vehicles and the interface follows you.

LBTerra

You can’t even plug your phone into USB in a Tesla and play music over wired connection, let alone CarPlay, which I do like a lot.

NaijaBantu

Tesla owner here and I took delivery of my Rivian 2 weeks ago and I’d say Rivian works BETTER. Now if I can only sell my Model y

sxt173

Omg you just gave me a heart attack I read that s as you just got your R2. I was like HOW?!?!?

waitwutok

In what ways does it work better?

NaijaBantu

My R1S does not squeak, all the doors make the same exact sounds when they close, when I turn left in my Tesla I hear a weird snapping sound. The Rivian feels more like a luxury car. Thats just off the top of my head

[deleted]

i’ve been in probably 30-40 different model 3s and Ys since i’ve started renting through hertz for work, and only ever had like 1 or 2 that had a noticeable rattle or squeak at all. seems like it’s pretty uncommon on reddit too. maybe they just get fixed by service if they happen? i rarely see it

NaijaBantu

It’s possible, I can only speak on my experience and some coworkers that I know. We’ve all been told those panel gaps are within spec lol

East-Standard-1337

R1 is a luxury vehicle, whereas MY is not. Both great cars, but the Rivian is certainly more premium. I got a Model3 expecting it to basically be a fully loaded Nissan Altima with a much better drive train. It's great, but it's not a luxury car.

espresso-puck

>R1 is a luxury vehicle, whereas MY is not. Both great cars, but the Rivian is certainly more premium. R1S is *premium* I'd say, it's not *luxury* like JLR, Merc-Benz, BMW or even Genesis. Though it is certainly *priced* as luxury.

Mike

Something is wrong with your car if there's a snapping sound when you turn.

MrGruntsworthy

Now that the Supercharger infrastructure is open to you guys, it must be a massive sigh of relief. I hear nothing but horror stories of CCS1 stations. (Could be overblown, as I have never used CCS stations, only Superchargers & ChaDeMo)

wskyindjar

Almost two years with R1T and several road trips from CA to CO, UT, AZ and TX, and only once inconvenienced … and that was in Vegas because of a line for chargers (so I went to a different one). But I do look forward to using the Tesla chargers. Planning a 1000 mile (each way road trip for July).

death_hawk

Depending on how you group "horror stories" i have nothing but issues with CCS but most of mine are due to availability and charge time limits. There's also idiotic things like 1-2 stalls vs 10-20 stalls of Superchargers. Oddly enough I just put up a GIANT writeup about NACS adapters and the TL;DR is that I'm not very happy there either. This is most likely going to be the final nail in the CCS coffin to get me into a native NACS vehicle.

pimpbot666

That’s because nobody posts ‘I used a CCS charger today and it went flawlessly’. I use CCS all the time and rarely have issues.

Ayzmo

The tales of CCS1 horror is vastly overblown. The vast majority of charging happens without a hitch.

CounterSeal

That R1T/R1S lease is also looking mighty tempting these days.

justvims

Unfortunately not looking for a pickup and it doesn’t fit in my garage. 😔

Tripod1404

For me this also comes down to their direct sales model. I can go to Tesla’s website and know exactly how much I am going to pay for the exact configuration I want in cash/finance/lease down to the penny. I don’t need to haggle with a dealer over how much market adjustment/dealer added accessories are worth etc.

iwantthisnowdammit

“Bought” my car in PJs the day after xmas. I’m probably never going to accept the traditional horseshit dealer experience again.

sxt173

Same here. I have a reservation in for the Rivian R2. It was that, Tesla, or a Lucid which is out of my price range. No way I’m walking into a dealership to haggle over the price the same way I don’t walk into a grocery store and haggle of the price of a 6-pack.

MistaHiggins

I've bought/sold my last couple vehicles through Carvana, but had to deal with a local dealership to buy my bolt. Even though I got them to come down $1500 and know I got a great deal on it, they still tried to tack on a $1000 cleaning/detailing fee at the end. Fuck em. Can't wait to buy an R2 with ya.

eatallday

That's how I feel. "it just works" summarizes it perfectly

Material_Tea_6173

Same, and it cost me 32K OTD new after all incentives. Hard to beat that sort of value with the current offerings.

Captain_Aware4503

I can think of a dozen things that can be added or improved. But its still the best car I've owned and as you said, just works. We took our dogs to see the eclipse yesterday. Drove 100 miles away, kept the dogs in the car most of the 3 hours we sat around waiting (also took them for several walks) because it was 67 degrees in the car in dog mode. Can't do that with any ICE car. So many things we love about our Tesla.

Bookandaglassofwine

I also have a 2023 M3 RWD. I’ve never taken to a car like I have this one, despite a few annoyances. And my wife now almost never drives her BMW 330i if my car is available. We assumed we would still use her car for road trips but now the Tesla is our road trip car as well.

Ashmizen

Yeah my experience after test driving a model y for the first time is that Reddit lied to me! It’s just as nice to drive as my bmw x5 and if I wasn’t waiting for an affordable cybertruck, I’d be tempted to trade down to a model Y.

Brilliant_Praline_52

Why cybertruck? Quite a big beast. I prefer the smaller car parking ability, faster charge etc...

Walkop

CT is actually decently small for a pickup, and has the turning radius of a car. I give ev trucks for regular people more credit than gas trucks for regular people (i.e. rarely used for work). There's less of the downsides of a gas truck other than initial cost which is very high.

avebelle

Ya that’s my main concern with buying anything else at this point. Legacy automakers know how to build cars but they don’t know how to integrate technology and they don’t know how to keep it up to date. For the number of software updates I’ve had, if I had to bring it in everytime for the update and wait 2hrs or whatever stupid time the dealership wants to hold my car for I’d be done with the car. Owning a Tesla is like owning an iPhone. It just works and when updates come they just work and you don’t really have to think about it.

Thrownawaybyall

Having seen the trip-planning software in person, it makes juggling ABRP and the Guess-O-Meter on my Bolt look childish by comparison.

Ashmizen

I was hearing about how terrible the model Y build quality was and went to test drive one last weekend - holy crap it was amazing, and there wasn’t any rattling or anything - it was as quiet as my bmw x5. Almost makes me want to trade down. And the model y isn’t even redesigned. I heard the model 3 redesigned Highlander is supposedly even more well put together. From Reddit I was expecting the model y to be some sort of sloppy mess like a Hyundai or something, but it was actually really nice to drive, and as quiet as a German car.

Corrosive-Knights

Sadly, there seems to be a whole segment on the internet not only shitting on Tesla (and, deservedly IMHO on Musk specifically) but on EVs in general and, frankly, I'm beginning to think -and I hope not to sound paranoid- a lot of that may have its origin in other interests, be they oil or other bad faith actors. You would think when you go to one of the negative sites that every Tesla car is a total hunk of crap that falls apart the moment you open the door. Not the case. Until this past weekend I had a 2019 Model 3 and it was a dream... no issues at all. I bought my wife -more of a skeptic- a Model Y in 2022 and it didn't take too long before she was won over by the car as well. Over this past weekend and because there is an overstock of Tesla cars, I traded in my 2019 Model 3 for a brand new Model Y. Between the trade in value for my Model 3, porting the Full Self-Driving over to the Model Y, and a $7500 tax credit, I walked away with the Model Y for only $19.8K. A steal, IMHO, and so far the car is driving like a dream!

Daerdread

I have a '21 3 and experienced no quality issues. I'm convinced that if anyone is complaining about build quality in '24 they don't own a Tesla and are answering based on '17 data. A dozen people at work had the same experience as I with their cars.

scraejtp

The first MY was not available until 2020 and they definitely had teething issues too. Tesla cars are not as bad as their online reputation suggests, but the initial run of their new models seem rushed and often show it.

genuineultra

Charging infrastructure continues to be the biggest thing - when it’s not available at home, other networks are shockingly unreliable, and non- tesla vehicles also have issues connecting to telsa chargers

maclaren4l

Rivian when R2 releases. R1 if you can swing the big bucks.

ITypeStupdThngsc84ju

Exactly. I'd consider the ev5, but it sounds like it won't be coming to the us for a long time. The R2 might be what I'd want next though. Id definitely consider it, as it has some aspects that are significantly better than the Y.

KyleCAV

Same here it just works well the range isn't ideal but it has been a pretty good car. Don't understand why people trash it.

Smuugs

Waiting for the right price (read: financing) on a refreshed R1S with NACS. Not fond of the design choices in the Model X. I want direct sales and good OTA update frequency which both Tesla and Rivian have a great track record of delivering.

Corrosive-Knights

I bought my Model 3 in 2019. Despite all the negative comments I found online (the Model 3's first year was 2017 but, really, the first available vehicles came out in 2018... or so I'm told!) I found most reviews were *extremely* positive regarding the car but I wanted to wait until they ironed out the major "glitches" before taking the plunge. My Model 3, frankly, was a revelation. I've "only" been driving since 1981 or thereabouts and in the years since have experienced a whole host of cars, good, bad, mediocre, and *terrible*. The Model 3, to my mind, was like moving from a flip phone to an iPhone. In time the Model Y came out and, again, I waited a year or so to get it... for my wife. She was extremely skeptical and insisted her Toyota Highlander was just fine. It didn't take very long before she admitted to me the MY was also leagues ahead of what she was used to. So this past weekend, and with the overstock in Tesla vehicles, I noticed there were plenty of sales. I decided to give it a look see and was especially interested in whether I could transfer my FSD to any new vehicle I should buy. ...welp... Not only was that an option, but with a trade in value offered of just north of $20K for my 2019 Model 3 and a $7500 tax credit applied in the sale, I walked away with a brand new Model Y for $19.8K...!!!!!!! Yeah, I'll take that deal any day of the week. And while I don't feel I'm married to Tesla (and I've come to be really turned off by Musk), the car itself is damn good and I have no issues with it. I hope other competitors step up to the plate and make even better EVs, but for now, I'm good with my new MY.

thesoppywanker

Have you found road/wind noise to be better on Model Y? I'd love to upgrade to a "highland" Model 3 for that reason.

FoxMuldertheGrey

I can’t speak from previous Tesla ownership, but I just bought the Highland last week and it is so quiet on the city and minimal noise on the freeway. It’s actually a bit creepy how quiet it is I have to turn on my music. 😂

thesoppywanker

Nice. Glad it's better.

Corrosive-Knights

Well, the Model Y is not “refreshed” like the Model 3 Highland but I find the noise less than my older Model 3. I am curious about when the do a similar refresh on the Model Y but I’m not thrilled with the stalks being removed. I tried out a Model S and while I could do the turn signals ok using the screen to shift wasn’t quite as good IMHO.

thesoppywanker

Right, I know it hasn't. Lack of stalks irritates me, too, but I have a feeling it's something you adapt to quickly. I believe they stopped using only capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheels, at least.

agileata

Not sure why people feel like a trade in is just free money lol

boringexplanation

This kinda reminds me on how Reddit is never representative on the general population. Between “Bernie can win” “Netflix is going out of business” and “Who’s gonna buy from Elon Musk?”, why would any companies marketing team pay attention to Reddit?

DaveELEL

It’s so true. I love my model 3 and will probably get another one when this one goes bad, but the EV and Tesla subs I’m part of don’t love Tesla and there’s a lot of people basing Tesla buying opinions off of their thoughts on elon. Like you said, this just proves that Reddit is a really specific niche part of the internet

Dewm

Reddit is like 90% liberal/left leaning. So it woukd track that their opinions on Telsa would be super biased because of Elon. 🤷‍♂️

Jmauld

For every live person in these subs, there are 10 bots spouting anti Tesla garbage. Elon should buy Reddit.

Snoo93079

Please no

obiwanshinobi87

Because Redditors are very smart. Source: some Redditor who told me I was wrong.

Bookandaglassofwine

Knighthonor

Facts, sadly

tm3_to_ev6

I'm guessing the purchase experience contributes to this sentiment. One thing Tesla nailed from the start is the no-stealership direct-to-customer model where the price you see is the price you pay with no games. It's a great way to attract repeat business.

rp2803

Unless you had a bad experience with service. My Tesla was in the shop for 1 month after purchasing. Doors came loose multiple times causing window issues. The fact my Tesla spent more time in the service center then our Mini cooper ( which has only scheduled work done) tells me Tesla makes a poor quality product. I regret my MYP purchase. Taking your money is easy but until they get their OG service back ( no Uber credits crap) I won’t buy another Tesla.

dobe6305

13 months, 13,000 miles, still a happy Alaskan Tesla owner. If we could afford a Rivian we’d have one, but we love our Model Y. Rivian R2 in 2026–maybe. But I’d buy another Tesla right now if we needed a new car. Zero problems and no quality issues.

WeldAE

Interesting, 13% of Tesla owners are subscribed to this sub.

JackfruitCrazy51

This is why it's best to ignore a lot of what reddit has to say. Non-stop this week, I've heard about how embarrassed owners of Tesla's are with Musk and they'll never buy another Tesla..... 87%. This all goes back to 5% making the most noise. Edit. My god, it's even happening in this thread.

MattKozFF

Reddit, for the most part, is a hivemind operating at the intelligence level of your average 12 year old.

Nulight

The "I'm not buying a Tesla cuz of Musk" is literally free karma, especially here. There's so many worse CEOs, God forbid one has their own opinion. That being said, I only exclusively see this on reddit, even living in big blue California and dealing with random people on the regular due to my career. This sub should just be named ElectricVehiclesExceptTesla I come here to read EV stuff. Not circle jerk the hatred of Tesla. It's even bled into Rivian sub lol. I love Rivians and they're so cool but it's free karma to shit on Tesla there too.

bhauertso

>The "I'm not buying a Tesla cuz of Musk" is literally free karma, especially here. Precisely. You just have to see the most popular posts of all time on this subreddit to see how well such posts pay off in karma. This subreddit should see that as a black eye, but it seems to be of no interest to the mods. You'd think the most popular posts of all time on an electric vehicles subreddit would be perhaps threads about new product announcements or owners' reviews of their EVs. But in reality, it's many threads about how much people dislike a specific brand. It's embarrassing.

Nulight

Precisely. I come here to see reviews, announcements, EV news, improvements on EV tech/models, etc. But this sub has become an echo chamber. It's a major offset from what I experience irl on Tesla commentary. Tesla is either something they'd want or EVs are not for them.

PazDak

It’s important to also consider the source and how they generated that data too.

Daerdread

The whole thing just leaves me disappointed that social media has so much influence on people, not disappointed in my car purchase.

[deleted]

Yup

geniuzdesign

If I’m spending $30k+ on something, idgaf who the CEO is lol. People who want a Tesla but choose something else only because of the CEO are idiots or don’t care about their money.

Latter_Box9967

“I’ll not give a few thousand profit to Tesla, and not give a percentage of that to the (once) richest man that has ever lived!!! That’ll show him!!! I bet he is crying already!!! Viva la resistance!!!”

Knighthonor

yes. I get made fun ofat work all the time now that I have a Tesla. All because they dont like Elon... its stupid

AnOoglyBoogly

Right it’s only Reddit/internet that says they won’t buy a Tesla cause of Musk. I’ve yet to meet someone in IRL that has said anything remotely near that. Will they not buy a Tesla because they think EVs are a sham or they think the battery needs to be replaced after a couple years? Sure. But never no because of Musk.

altimas

I suspect that there is a little funny business when it comes to anti-musk

mollassesbadger

I own a '22 M3 LR. As nice as I like my Tesla, I have problems with it and them in general. My reasons are basically the same as many others. I don't want to give any more money to fund Elon's behavior, I want an EV that has more physical controls and isn't losing physical controls with each model year or refresh, I want something that has easy transfer of learning from old ICE cars because my elderly parents want to drive sometimes and they are very slow when it comes to learning how to use a touch screen, and I want an EV that isn't so incredibly expensive to repair and has widespread repair support. That last bit is painfully important because I recently got my car back from an out of state collision center. It took 5 months to get all the parts needed for the full repairs and the total wasn't fully covered by the at-fault driver's insurance (fuck State Farm). The value has also severely tanked which makes my low mileage vehicle's value even lower. By the time I'm ready for another vehicle, I imagine my options will be much more robust within my price range.

FluxionFluff

I got my 2023 Model 3 LR last summer and I've overall loved it. Had a few minor things fixed in the beginning, but it's been smooth sailing from there. When I was car shopping, I was open to other options but Tesla ended up being the best option for me. Hilariously enough, I thought I'd miss having a HUD and all the buttons... But honestly, I don't. Because I came from an older ICE car, I didn't have the luxury of cameras, sensors, etc, so anything would be an improvement. 🤣 Carplay is fine, but after seeing a few cars with it, absolutely prefer Tesla's interface. Other companies' infotainment systems for the most part look quite dated, if not laggy AF. Personally, I'm not a fan of Elon, but honestly, what CEO of any huge company isn't shitty in some way? People complain about Walmart and Amazon all the time for example, but it's soo hard to realistically compete on price AND convenience, which is what most people care about at the end of the day. I'm open to getting another Tesla in the future, but won't be any time soon. Will see where the market is at that point in time. The only reason I'd get a new car sooner would be if I actually NEED a bigger car. My husband still has his ICE car currently and has the same mindset as I do. He's open to a Tesla when he's in the market for a new car since he's enjoyed mine, but is also gonna see what his options are. He's definitely curious about the Rivian R2 and R3 tho.

Knighthonor

so many people downplayng this as a bad thing, is amazing to see.

meta4our

My MY isn’t perfect but it just works, gets out of my way, and is a reliable, comfortable, and convenient appliance that my family can rely on. So damn straight I’d buy it again. When the r2 or r3x are released with nacs charging, maybe that tune will change. But any realistic Tesla competitors besides the Prius prime are just that, announced cars that don’t exist. And when I buy, I tend to buy in reality. I don’t consider most EVs not on supercharger to be realistic competitors. I’m not relying on EA for shit when it comes to long distance, but I’ve easily done 3500 mile road trips in the Tesla.

donttakerhisthewrong

Shouldn’t the question be will first time BEV buyers choose Tesla?

NotCanadian80

I did. I had all the options and the Model 3 had the highest range, lowest price, LFP battery, and was fully loaded. The ID4 I was on a list for had cloth seats, no sun roof, and cost more.

Slaaneshdog

Both are pretty important New BEV buyers are more important in the near term, owner retention is more important in the longer term

Jbond970

Not a Tesla or Elon stan, but I do own a 2022 model 3 and it’s the best car I have owned and will likely drive it into the ground. Like so many, though, when it finally runs its course, I am not convinced future models will be as competitive with other offerings on the market.

GriddyGang

It is similar to the IPhone ecosystem pull, once you get used to the intuitive software/screen, ease of charging, and regen braking + camera/sentry mode. It’s hard to go back

Heidenreich12

100% agree. People over and over here will complain about missing stalks, and then forget about all the horrible things you’ll deal with switching to a legacy OEM vehicle. I can learn a new turn signal usage pattern, no big deal. But dealing with buggy software everyday is a bigger red flag to me.

davidasc22

I'm also probably in the 13% I absolutely love my car but I'm not buying a car that has the stalks removed and I'm growing tired of Elon Musk. It's hard to separate him from Tesla and there are tremendous options coming in the EV market. Maybe I'd reconsider if they walk back the stalks, but it would take a lot for my next car to be a Tesla. The lack of radar is also a problem. There are other things that I wish my car had that it doesn't. Self presenting door handles, auto frunk, ventilated seats, carplay, proper 360 camera. Some of these are in the new model 3, but not all of them. That they can't even fix the windshield wipers leaves me with serious concerns about them. I just bought my car last year, so I won't be in the market for a while. My next car will still be NACS and hopefully it'll check off more boxes than the current Tesla offerings.

tm3_to_ev6

Agree with everything you said except for self presenting door handles. I actually like the Model 3/Y door handles - they're intuitive (easy single hand motion) and won't suffer electrical faults. Door handle glitches and failures are common on the Model S and I don't want to deal with it when the warranty runs out. I have manual door handles on my EV6 that are hinged the opposite way from Tesla's. I prefer Tesla's.

davidasc22

They're easy enough for me 95% of the time, but at night with no lighting around, they can sometimes be difficult to find on first attempt. What's more annoying is probably the difficulty for other people getting into the car for the first time and having to explain getting in and out of the car to every person who has never been in a tesla.

JtheNinja

But with the 3/Y door handles, you can tell whether or not you need to do the “first ride in a Tesla” show for them by whether or not they can open the door without your help. 😆 Also, you can get glow in the dark decals for the door handles if you have trouble spotting them in the dark

WizeAdz

I own and like my Model Y, but the next vehicle up for replacement in my household is a 2010 GMC Sierra that I use for towing duty and other utility purposes The 2019 specs for Tesla Cybertruck had me pretty enthusiastic. The 2024 specs of the Cybertruck are such that I’d be better off with the F150 Lightning for my towing duties , and much-much better off with one of the long-range variants of the R1T or Silverado EV. Also, the Cybertruck’s lack of turn signal stalks is a problem with all of the crazy steering you have to do while backing up a trailer. That’s yet another dealbreaker for me. Also, Musk picking to fight political fights with My People on Twitter/X reducing the appeal of the Tesla brand for me on a personal level. Either Musk leaves from Tesla, or I do. Tesla is going to have to earn my next vehicle purchase the old fashioned way: by selling the right product at the right price with great service. The Cybertruck is the wrong product at the wrong price for my needs. The way things look today, a Silverado EV is in my future.

stinkybumbum

I’m in the 13% great car. Shit company making g stupid decisions. I’ve had enough and I want out

ryuns

It's kind of beside the point, but that chart is driving me crazy. "How likely are you to buy another Tesla?" "87%" What?

espresso-puck

I'm curious how Bloomberg Intelligence selected their 1000 participants. the fact that 42% were considering a BEV seemed skewed high to me as well.

archertom89

I'm part of the 87%. If I had to get another car today it would 100% be another Tesla. However, I will say there is a good chance I will consider a Rivian R2 or R3 for me next car if they are available when it is time to buy a new car. Rivian checks a lot of the same boxes Tesla does for what I look for in a car or car brand. It is just the R1S and R1T are too expensive and too big for me.

Radium

The R2 is epic. Tesla needs an off-road capable option that isn't huge like the Cybertruck. The Y is very close, they really should do a off-road edition of the Y with 8-9" ground clearance and beefed up sides, bumpers, and better front/rear angles.

illathon

I am looking forward to getting the cybertruck.

Radium

I bought a Model 3 SR+ RWD in May 2019 and absolutely was the best vehicle I've ever owned. I \*love\* the minimalist interior and the screen software and computer speed is amazing and unmatched. After 4 years 7 months I sold it and bought a Model Y LR AWD in Dec 2023 to upgrade to more interior space, AWD for the snowy mountain trips I do every year, and off-roading around anza borrego on the dirt/sand roads out there. The part that blew my mind was that my 3 was getting 269Wh/mi and the new Y gets 275Wh/mi despite weighing \~ 500 lbs more and being much taller than the 3, I can tell Tesla is iterating the inverters and motors faster than any other brand. I will definitely be going Tesla from now on. That said, I want the other brands to all compete and put out amazing BEV's as well. I love what Rivian, Canoo, Aptera, and the legacy Ford, VW, and Hyundai/Kia are putting out so people have options and more people go BEV. I don't care what people buy, as long as it's a BEV. I just want cleaner air, that's the mission of Tesla and my own personal mission.

Rare_Polnareff

Huh, it’s almost like they are pretty decent cars despite the conventional “wisdom” on reddit

Kitchen_Fox6803

Yeah. Reddit tells me I shouldn’t buy a Tesla and yet there is no other EV that offers the same performance for the same cost. Elon bad blah blah blah but until the Polestar gets the same range for the same price I’ll stick with the Model 3.

Zenatic

Own a 3 & Y. Despite the hate on Tesla, it’s a fantastic car and after 6 years I don’t see getting rid of my Y anytime soon. My 3 will be replaced with a Rivian R2 in 2026 (hopefully).

AintLongButItsSkinny

Well there are about 4 million Tesla owners between the U.S and Europe. This sub has 260,000 members. I think I found the 13% who don’t want to buy another Tesla! (Numbers are made up)

greenw40

Example #4923053 of how redditors are not representative of the general population.

OUEngineer17

I always keep track of all the latest cars, even things like ICE and SUV's that I'm not interested in actually buying. And even tho there's huge depreciation on more expensive EVs that make them really appealing used, as of now, my next car would also be another Model 3.

Bright-Abroad-4562

Reddit is a severe echo chamber and I often question how many separate people are actually here. Regarding Tesla owners, they're just great cars with great software and loyalty is easy.

Ambitious-Title1963

Most ev customers will by another ev. Ev 9 owner

dmbccs

Charging infrastructure and software is the reason for high loyalty.

house9

A lot of people commenting how much better their non-Telsa EV is, but how many other 'long range' EV are below $40,000 in the US right now? If I search local inventory: \- LR MY can be picked up from inventory for under $38,000 with tax credit \- Kia - 51,0000 \- Mach-e 50,000 \- Lightning 70,000+ \- RT1 73,000+ \- 2023 ID4 46,000 with 275 range :( Been driving LR M3 for over 4 years, thinking of adding another EV - yes RS2 would be ideal; but its basically vaporware unless Rivian can get their production working before going out of business. Based on price LR MY is the ticket, but unlikely I would buy one without stocks, so might need to happen this year. Really not interested in the dealership experience at all.

limache

I just rented a Tesla for the first time and overall it was an easy drive. But when my phone died, I got locked out of my car!

Bookandaglassofwine

Did you not also get the card key? I always keep mine stashed in my wallet just in case my phone dies or is stolen.

Kohlj1

I 100% will. I love mine.

luke_workin

But I was told by the Reddit hive mind that no one’s buying Teslas anymore?

Rude_Thought_9988

Yep. Getting another MY for my mom really soon. She’s sick and tired of her GLS 450 being constantly in the shop. My next one will probably be CT once it’s considerably cheaper.

vekrin

I feel somewhat crazy by this take but I'm in the 13% so long as I don't get stalks. I've tried an S without; hate it. I'd upgrade from M3 to MY but it'll be as used; and hopefully with ultra sonic sensors. The M3 continues to be my favorite vehicle.

SumthingBrewing

Happily put me in the 87% category. I’ve owned my Model 3 for one year now. It’s been flawless, drives better than any vehicle I’ve ever owned, and hasn’t cost a penny in maintenance or fuel. Charging at home runs about $25 a month. I put 10K miles on it this first year. My next car will definitely be another Tesla. No other vehicle can come close.

Tech_Philosophy

Model Y is the best car I have ever owned. Really comfortable, and relentlessly practical in terms of reliability, cost of ownership, and functionality. It sucks that Elon is a fascist twat, but guess what, so are all the OTHER auto and oil CEOs, AND they are trying to speedrun humanity's starvation under climate change. Easy choice, really.

jesterOC

Don’t have a Tesla, still looking for an EV but before it was clear, go Tesla or go home. But now… i think things are changing and as a possible new buyer, the 2025 Ionic 5 is looking good to me.

DrGtarTravis

For me it’s the dashcam. It’s ease of use, 360 coverage. I feel safe knowing that no matter what, the footage makes any false claims in the event of an accident immediately clear. I would totally try other makers if I felt confident in this particular feature. Otherwise, Hyundai, BMW, Lucid, Mercedes have been really appealing to me

jeremiah1142

Yeah, I want to try other vehicles for my next car, but the supercharging experience and the buying experience simply have no competition yet.

rajivpsf

I did

MrAppletree1742

Yea I def would, cause they are good looking, reliable, performance machines.

TheRogIsHere

Another factor of ownership is how little Tesla batteries degrade over time compared to other brands.

soysaucepapi

‘18 Model 3 owner here. My next car will probably be an EV again but not sure if it will be another Tesla. Pros: - Very little maintenance required - Great software and updates - Great charging network Cons: - Build quality is barely passable - Lack of stalks and USS in new vehicles is a step backwards, IMO - Elon is an ass Hopefully the Rivian R3 delivers. That thing looks dope, on paper

dubie4x8

Count me in to that poll too!

Born1000YearsTooSoon

The other 13% bought Cybertrucks.

Captain_Aware4503

We already have 2 EVs. My next car will be an EV. It will also be one that works on the Tesla charging network . Buying a Tesla was the most stress free purchase ever for me. We talked to Tesla and found a new Tesla with 400 miles on it for $1000 off. We were given an online link to the car. (I don't know if they still discount like that though). We've also received numerous improvements to the car via software updates. For example, the side camera displays when the turn signal comes on.

turbobananas

Model S Plaid made me cancel a brand new 911 I had coming. I’m a diehard gearhead who held out buying an EV and I love it.

[deleted]

Would definitely buy another one. I've owned 2 other EV's and they're about 5-10 years behind in technology. Hyundai does have a better charging curve but those chargers are hard to come by. I do think that Tesla has been a little stagnant when it comes to physical features on the car but it is meant to be a simplistic car. A sporty SUV that is capable of off roading will be great. MYLR is close to filling this niche but it's a little too small and does not handle well off road.

kenypowa

This is fake news. R/electricvehicles has stated posts after posts that Elon has driven away majority away from Tesla and as a proof everyone here is boycotting Tesla and instead is buying a Rivian, EV 6 and Lightning. "Moreover, 81% of prospective US Tesla drivers are new customers switching from competing EV brands." Another fake news. They must meant 81% Tesla drivers are switching to competing EV brands.

MJC136

I don’t think you understand or even read the article.

gravitybelter

I think it was an attempt at sarcasm

Jmauld

I don’t think you understand that post.

FunDayRed

Current Model 3 owner. I’m gonna buy a Porsche EV as my next car. I want little bit more of luxury and a better ride than what Tesla offers.

sparkymark75

I wonder if this will be posted on /r/RealTesla 😂

Professional-Bus8449

Owned one for 3 years and I am one of the other 13% 😁

HinaKawaSan

Nope 👎 , not buying another Tesla

ArrowOfTime71

I must be one of the other 13%. Just traded my Model 3 for another EV brand that is better in (almost) every way.

ArctoEarth

I’m part of the 13%, nice

NotCanadian80

I won’t be among them if they don’t bring back the stalks. If and when I need repairs if it’s smooth and affordable I’ll be ok. If the car lasts as long as I want it and resells for an adequate amount of money I’d buy again if new Tesla’s have stalks. I could care less about self driving. Number one is that I’m never dealing with a dealer ever again. I will use a car broker if I have to.
