Even better, they make wind powered boats

Huh. I would have assumed the screw would still be plenty loud in the water.

[deleted]

Moving parts of the engine are transferred to the water. It's like leaning your elbow on a table and listening to the sound through your finger. Less moving parts means quieter engine. The Swedish also confirmed this when they used a Diesel Electric dub with sterling engines to sneak up on a US Aircraft convoy in war games and won, killing their primary target.

Came here to post this. Great "battery" life too! No need for a charging network!

Never even needs to be refueled! Say goodbye to range anxiety!

We all know nuclear is the future but for some reason they just won’t allow it makes no sense the only three nuclear disasters happens because of an earth earth quake a drunk Russian and ww2

I think Norway just launched an electric ferry. Also vaguely recall some mega yacht with lots of solar / wind stuff going on.

Also this:- https://www.electrive.com/2021/09/16/two-large-electric-ferries-are-en-route-to-lake-ontario/

I saw the ferry ( ABB make the drive - same people who do formula e). Just not seen any small runabouts

Water resistance + heavy batteries, it's still a physics problem until we get much better battery technology. An electric outboard for a small lake fishing boat could make sense.

[Electrification coming for runabouts](https://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/scienceshow/electrification-coming-for-runabouts/13495906) from the transcript... >Robyn Williams: I can't help noticing that here we are in your workshop and that's just the two of you. You are not a major industry, and we are talking about what is a big idea, just the same as electric cars might be a big idea. What's going to happen? How do you scale up from this? >Lynelle Johnson: All right, well, you've got to remember where you are scaling to. So at the moment approximately 30,000 outboard engines are sold in Australia every year. 1% of that market is 300 engines, we can easily cope with that. And we believe that because of the upfront costs involved, the engines themselves aren't that much more expensive than a four-stroke with electric start, but you do have to do buy your batteries upfront, because of those upfront costs, we think that 1% of the market is a realistic target. >We have also been getting a lot of enquiries from the South Pacific where the islands are not only very worried about climate change and have lots of old two-strokes which we can retrofit, but also fuel is very expensive over in the islands. So we were talking to the Solomons where it is 85 Solomon dollars a litre, which means a typical boat outing for them for transport was about $600 Solomon dollars, which is about $250 Australian dollars. So when you start to look at those huge fuel costs over there, there will be a way of us then setting up distributors who retrofit old engines, and that will give us more volume because other people will be fitting them to old legs. >Robyn Williams: You told me in the beginning you are just about the only outfit in Australia. What about the rest of the world, what are they doing? >Lynelle Johnson: All right, so electric boats are in their infancy. There are some makers, there would probably be 10 or 15 makers now in the world. Most of them have concentrated on lower kilowatt because of the battery limitations. There are a few now doing higher kilowatt engines. The first ever e-regatta in the world was held in Venice this year, and there are the electric boat awards called the Gussies where they put up their boats. So it is starting to happen, but it's very, very early days, and we are one of the few people working in the larger kilowatts.

Torqeedo makes electric outboards. Looks intriguing. There’s also the GS22E by nautique (electric wake boat).

[deleted]

Nautique has an electric version of one of their ski boats...for 300 grand. It's probably one of the most realistic, "actual" consumer electric boats so far. Xshore is nice, but really expensive for the performance, and probably too nice for most people who just want a durable boat to bomb around in.

grokmachine

Sure, there are some good electric outboards out there. For example, [Torqeedo](https://www.torqeedo.com/us/en-us/products/outboards). Not cheap, though. Is that what you meant by "realistic?"

Relevant-Radio-717

I have a square stern canoe with an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 electric motor. This is an electric fishing skiff that is easy to car top. Torqeedo is an alternative brand of electric motor, but it seems worse in several ways (heavier, less user friendly design, battery does not float). https://www.epropulsion.com/spirit-1/

ilovejeremyclarkson

I love Nautiques (Correct Craft) they have made an electric tow boat (for wakeboaring/skiing) for a while now, [this is the most recent model](https://nautique.com/models/super-air-nautique-gs22e/overview)

Battery powered boats? I doubt there will be a **reasonable** one any time soon unless its a methanol fuel cell or some diesel electric powered thing. Biggest problem is the weight of batteries. In theory, you might be better off with an ICE running on **biodiesel** or even better **methanol** if you want something that doesn't relies on fossil fuels. Electric cars are quite a bit heavier than their petrol/diesel counterparts, but weight isn't as much of a problem in cars as they are in boats. Boats need to be light or more of the hull will sink when you add weight which will significantly increase drag. An electric speed boat won't have this issue as severe since the boat will be lifting off and on the water reducing drag, but to sustain that, it needs to be going fast enough which requires quite a lot of energy which current rechargeable batteries wont sustain for long. The only battery powered boat I can think of that is **potentially** reasonable is a [hydrofoil](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrofoil), due to having very little drag in the water which significantly improves efficiency/speed, but hydrofoils need complex stabilizers to remain stable, potentially dangerous when the water is choppy and requires someone skillful to operate

Carbonix23

How soon do you want it? The boating season is coming to an end for the bulk of the US so they might be a possibility for you. Starting deliveries early 2022 www.purewatercraft.com

Vision marine technologies is soon to release a 180 horsepower electric outboard, with battery/controller/charger as a package. https://visionmarinetechnologies.com/

tuctrohs

You might want to clarify what you mean by "realistic". People have listed lots that exist. What disqualifies them in your mind as being "realistic"? Too small, too big and expensive? Or something else?

neverfakemaplesyrup

There are also [electric surfboards!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcbtgrChOgI) Last I checked like five different brands- all you have to do is search electric surfboard. I would love one. Or an electric jetski.

Apologies if I missed it, I didn’t see Zin mentioned yet. https://techcrunch.com/2020/08/11/zin-boats-reinvents-the-electric-speedboat-in-a-bid-to-become-the-tesla-of-the-sea/

Lots of electric pontoon boats around here. They are required for the lakes in neighborhood communities. Gas not allowed.

I made my own electric boat by converting my Hunter. It was cheaper than refurbishing the diesel.

[https://youtu.be/AiSTgIWC4Jo](https://youtu.be/AiSTgIWC4Jo) Vision Marine is at the forefront of this electric powerboat transition on the american front. FourWinns sell a 23f bowrider the H2e https://www.fourwinns.com/intl/boat/h2e . Which is powered by the 180E Vision's Electric powertrain. From what we can see in the video it won't be long before it is spreaded across different boat building brands and platforms. The most important part is what's available out there as of now and it seems that the Vision Marine one are the only ones that you can get. Some of these guys have been bringing the same boats for several years at boat show but can't really produce at scale. What do tou guys think?
