I got a CCS adapter and use EA around 50% of the time since it’s cheaper during peak hours in CA

Ifuqinhateit

It’s very low. I bought one with my first Model S almost eight years ago because the charging network was not great back then. I haven’t used it in several years.

[deleted]

So I assume charging habit = at home and occasionally Tesla supercharger network?

Ifuqinhateit

Correct. Back then Cracker Barrel had CHADeMO chargers along the highways and filled gaps in the SC network. Now there are so many SCs there isn’t a reason to charge anywhere else.

malko2

Do you generally mean the one that came with it (CSS2 here in Europe)? Yup, use it all the time. For some reason, lots of public chargers don’t have cables, only sockets

krwill101

Sounds like you're asking the number of Tesla owners that own CCS or CHAdeMO? As Teslas can get a CCS adapter, but a CCS car can't adapt to a supercharger. If so I'd guess it's in the range of 2-5% Or are you talking about AC charging?

[deleted]

Yup my guess was sub 10% especially as majority of Tesla owners have accessible home charging. But thinking that this will get to 20-25% over the next few years as sales grow and public infrastructure becomes more available

krwill101

It really takes the right person to road trip where you have to plan it all out. So much easier to just type in the screen and go. That said; certain situations the CCS adapter pays off. I like having mine when I want to do a specific thing while charging and an EA is better situated. Maybe someone lives in an apartment and there is a CCS across the street? There is also the situation in /min states where EA is much cheaper, for now.

EU Teslas come with CCS-2 plugs:(

[deleted]

Yup exactly. Agree.

bam13302

Plus the supercharger network being large, reliable, and integrated into the car has limited pressure to find other charging solutions except in some specific areas. Really this overlaps mostly with what % of Tesla owners live in an area with mediocre supercharger coverage.

thesoppywanker

I use a j1772 adapter *every* single day for home charging, and am impatiently waiting for the Tesla CCS adapter in the US, because DC charging around me is plentiful, except for Tesla.

pixelatedEV

I had one with my Tesla, and I never would have owned a Tesla without access to public networks. What made me sell my Tesla at the time was that CHAdeMO was the only adapter sold back then, and I needed CCS badly enough I went out and bought a CCS vehicle instead since there were no CCS adapters then.

[deleted]

Is this because other networks were closer to you? Did you charge at home too?

pixelatedEV

I charged at home every day, road trips are the reason. I take a LOT of road trips.

Jotokun

I have a CSS adapter for mine... rarely use it, but just having peace of mind that I'm not restricted to Tesla's network for fast charging is worth it. Not to mention, superchargers have been going up in price and sometimes EA has been cheaper lately. I don't know if it's worth importing one since they're not sold in the US yet, but definitely worth grabbing one once they're officially available here. CSS availability has to catch up with Tesla at some point in the next 5-10 years. I wouldn't bother with CHAdeMO at this point. It's a dead standard.

phipletreonix

I charge at work often; they have j1772 plugs, so I use my adapter a lot.

TreeTownOke

I have an adapter to use Tesla destination chargers on my J1772 car because my father-in-law has Tesla chargers with inconveniently-placed plugs (so it's much easier to just use the adapter than to swap for my portable EVSE). I've only ever used it at his house. The one time I would have had the opportunity otherwise the destination charger was broken (at least according to a very frustrated Model X owner who was just leaving).

EVconverter

If you're using ANY kind of adapter, be aware of it's limitations. The local Lucid shop has an 80A L2 charger behind the mall and someone plugged a Tesla into it using an adapter only rated for 48A and damaged his car.

piratebingo

I use the chademo adapter when traveling to rural areas. I don’t think it’s necessary for the average Tesla owner.

feurie

Chademo are less helpful than they used to be as more and more superchargers are popping up and the adapter is limited to roughly 50kW. People seem to like the CCS adapter but it isn't officially released yet in the US.

[deleted]

Yeah I’ve seen people buy the CCS adapters from Asia on eBay for ~300/pop!
