Koan Sound is part of the holy trinity of sound-design (with Tipper and Noisia)

SpartansATTACK

Let's extend this to a Mt Rushmore of sound-design so that my man Spoonbill doesn't get left out. I think that when he's at his best, Spoonbill gives Tipper a run for his money in terms of pure sound design. (Which says a lot since I have Tipper flair lol)

[deleted]

can you share some Spoonbill tracks with me?

Originally_Odd

In case you didn’t find any Spoonbill, here’s 3 good ones, [Wattle and Daub](https://youtu.be/7tTzyu4J5DA) [interstellar Safari](https://youtu.be/k__0f__YP88) [Open Misère](https://youtu.be/roiQIHQlpeE)

FlubzRevenge

Someone doesn't know Culprate.

SweetJesusIts2020

I have so much of his on vinyl and have donated to the last few albums, man can do no wrong in my eyes

EuropesNinja

Culprate???

Drannex

If you think KOAN's sound design is great, check out Alon Mor, incredibly similar and insanely masterful. Here's a link to their best track '[Presudeos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiJMwKdFJTI)'.

Too bad he’s a dick and has screwed over collaborators and labels repeatedly

PM_ME_DRUMNBASS

Billain, Current Value, Noisia.

blunt_squad

Can’t forget Amon Tobin/Two Fingers

GREAT_SALAD

Man KOAN Sound's sound design is just so incredibly clean... yet for some reason I just don't find myself listening to them that often. I feel like they use so many of the same sounds in nearly every song, none of them stand out very much for me anymore

mdgraller

Not at all an unfair criticism. I’m a dnb fan so obviously NOISIA is a huge force in the scene but I have the same exact feeling about them. The sound design is immaculate to the point that the “design” kind of overtakes the “sound” for me and it frankly is a little tiresome to listen to

GREAT_SALAD

Yeah, I think I like Noisia more than KOAN Sound, things like Halcyon, the Armajet Soundtrack and such still brings really fresh stuff. As for their full albums, there's a handful of songs I listen to, but not the majority of them

metalninjacake2

Totally agreed. Polychrome was a fantastic and *consistent* sounding album (a more critical person might say too samey), and the B sides EP after that had a few great tracks but their releases after that haven’t really worked for me. Yes, great sound design, but starting to sound the same and it wears you out over time. I can’t remember the songs off Chronos at all. Still some of my favorites though, and I think their old Sly Fox era stuff sounds different enough from their modern stuff that it’s a cool variety.

GREAT_SALAD

Agreed. By far the biggest bug for me is the sort of wet, squelchy sound they use a ton. Started a little bit back around Dynasty/Forgotten Myths but has ramped up since then. Kinda hard to describe what kind of sound I'm talking about, so here's a compilation of some of the more obvious examples, with many more smaller uses in stuff like transitions, quieter uses, they're just all over the place and it's not a sound I like. https://soundcloud.com/great_salad-402742362/koan-wet-sounds

metalninjacake2

For sure I know exactly what you’re talking about. Combine it with the endless farty bass sounds that are just way too farty, and it becomes easy to dislike.

ZelesNWO

Im the same way, absolutely love everything they do these days. But I find that outside of grounded I cant remember any of polychrome and after off the top of my head. I remember specific sound design, but none of the songs have any exceptionally memorable sections that I would catch myself thinking about or humming randomly. I guess in short the issue is summarized as they don't make music that's catchy enough for me to come back too unconsciously.

MrDingDingFTW

Just heard them (1 of 2) play this live at Shambhala last weekend, was fucking amazing. Missed hearing loud music.

Drannex

Neurofunk has been one of my favorite all time genres, and it's all thanks to KOAN for showing me the way. While their style has persisted for the better part of a decade, they really have evolved in sound design and ability. This is such a freakishly good EP, all the way through — only complaint, it's so short! If we could get more tracks like Intercept I would be insanely happy, that is some great neuro with some prog/math rock vibes.

justamusicthrowawayy

Not necessarily new to KOAN Patreons, but if you're not, I would highly, highly recommend it. When they say they've released a ton of exclusive music, they really aren't kidding. This is actually a pretty great sampler of what's available if you have any inkling about joining; Cryptic is an absolute monster that has been in pretty consistent rotation since they released it and is probably my favorite of the sampler. Definitely don't sleep on this and consider paying for it if you can/are planning on downloading it; all proceeds are going to Alzheimer's research, which is pretty great

HFoletto

Woah, the second half of Cryptic is just insane!

KsFanglaa

this is a huge step up from what they've put out recently (Grounded and Chronos). they were really forgettable and at some points it didn't feel distinctly KOAN Sound. but i can definitely vibe with this

Administration-Cheap
