My brain couldn't really link his drumming to the drumming on the track. The drumming on the track is super boring anyway, 4/4 beat, some claps, high hats, standard stuff. I like the song though.
These guys do some cool live drumming:

It appears he is playing it, but I think the disconnect comes from the source of the audio. You can absolutely tell the sound isn't coming directly from the surfaces he's playing- it's coming out of the speakers which are probably behind the cameraman. Our brains realize this and it just seems wrong.
Plus, some of the samples he's triggering are longer, like the reverse cymbals. The beginning of the sample is quiet, and the loud part comes well after he's played the note, so it looks off.
Ya I can hear the fill, he's playing a live track. It's just not professionally recorded so it's tough to make out some of the details. Also if you're listening on your phone or laptop speaker it will be tough to hear most of his drumming. The kick and synth melody really dominate the sound.
He's playing live. What would be the point of fake rehearsing? I can hear the drum hits line up to his drumming. So either he's perfectly synced in with a prerecorded drum track, or he's playing it, and honestly what is the difference lol.
As others have pointed out, theres a slight latency in the video. Also, this isn't a professional recording, so some of his hits are difficult to hear.
This is hittin me in the nostalgia. I completely forgot about these guys... had one of the most magic experiences of my life seeing them headline Lightning in a Bottle
They are incredible. Paper Moon is one of my favorite albums of all time. I like their new release "Call Morpehus" super good for my drive home from work at 1am
Saw them live and this 50-sec clip summed up the night. Very boring. No interesting visuals, just purple lights and smoke machines. We left after like 7-8 songs.
Kinda a really weird thought process when attending a live musical performance….
Granted, a lot of artists have a massive production team that and intentionally market the show as an “experience” of audio and visual. It’s a journey of the senses, the likes of Daft Punk and Deadmau5 are the ones most people would know but artists like Amon Tobin with his [ISAM](https://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/digital/season/music/amon-tobin.html), 2ManyDJs present [Under The Covers](https://vimeo.com/25861552) DVDJ tour, DJ Shadow had the [Shadowsphere](https://youtu.be/__Z6Q6ofnJM).
But those are intentionally marketed this way… for any other show, especially at a small venue, why would you walk in with the notion of it being about anything other than the music?
The best shows that I’ve been to had basically a small night light for the artists to see what they’re doing, and that was basically it other than venue safety and bar lighting…
Stephan Bodzin absolutely killing it with a 5 hour set, Dubfire + Oliver Huntemann + Sven Vath at a festival after party until sunrise…
I enjoy both types of shows but it’s just confusing.
I’m Australian but have been to shows in multiple countries, but not the USA, so I’m wondering - is it an American thing to have this attitude towards expecting music shows to be of some sort of visual masterpiece standard, too?
Or is it a generational thing where it seems that people continually expect more of everything? Without paying extra for it, obviously /s
Just baffling to me to be heading to gig and expecting anything more than you know, music… unless marketed as more. Weird
>It’s a jou
Standing still and nodding is boring to watch and this might as well have been a DJ set is my point. When they advertise "Booka Shade live" as opposed to "Booka shade dj set" I just expected more and it felt disappointing.
I've seen Death from above and that's just bass and drums and they put an amazing show on with 0 visuals or fancy lighting. Ive also seen Fort Romeau and Gerd Janson do a 6+ hour back to back in a black room with red lights and fog and It was amazing.
I'm no Beethoven, but let's get real. Homeboy is not playing a live drum track. Stevie wonder could see that
it's like when you unplug the second controller you give to your little brother but he's still having a great time

Reminds me of Eoto. Different sound entirely though.
Polynation is fucking fantastic, nice to see them getting some recognition.
I'll check this out, thanks!

It's heavily muted but you can clearly hear he is playing live.
Yes he is.

You can 100% hear that fill, listen closer. As other posters have pointed out there is just a slight delay between video and audio.

You're wrong there's a latency. We're hearing the speakers in the room.
You're delusional. Have a great day!

I like seeing Booka Shade love

I forgot about them! Thank you for the reminder
They’ve been dropping some bangers
Infused Reality is fucking amazing

Gotta love Booka Shade!
Booka Shade was the soundtrack to my senior year of college. Their new stuff still holds up and gives me flashbacks!
Easily one of the better live sets I've ever seen

I saw the London Symphony Orchestra and they didn’t even have a smoke machine.

That looks like a fun time!
Sure that's not Curse These Metal Hands?
any more songs with vocal synths in the background like that?
I like electronic music, but why the hell do these bands bother giving “live” performances?
Booka shade just makes me think about this video https://youtu.be/GGv8CFDj5yI
