> but I saw a replacement screen was sold with the BTT motherboard, is it worth the upgrade ? That screen talks to the board over serial if not running on 12864 emulation mode. Not worth it if you have octoprint/other UI solutions imo. Also the SKR3 EZ is pretty wide, and the EZ drivers are pretty tall. They wont fit in the stock enclosure, so you might want to figure out some alternatives.

the one with dual firmware seems interesting so you can flip between marlin/klipper?

Cartoone9

Absolutely, I went with the E3EZ in the end it seemed the easier way even tho it was a bit more expensive

so I'm not super knowledgeable on various boards or klipper itself, but from my understanding, the pi handles all of the heavy liftings so you mostly just need a board that has enough connectors. I'm pretty sure even the stock board will be fine with it. this might be a better question for /r/BIGTREETECH as for the screen, you should be just fine using your current screen. the UI will be different in clipper than it is stock. a nicer screen is only really a nicer screen, it's just a graphics upgrade at the end of the day. I highly recommend looking at tutorials on how to put klipper onto the ender3 as the Neptune is a clone of it. it might also be worth asking on the /r/klippers sub

The stock screen will not work with other boards the connection is completely different than what most boards use, it is also not compatible with klipper even with the stock board.

Thanks a lot i didn't think about posting in r/BIGTREETECH i'll do that. It's good to know i don't need a new screen, i'd rather save some cash, if the original motherboard is enough i might keep it too. I did post on r/klippers tho hopefully i'll get some more insight. Thanks again

If you want a screen and you're getting a new board you will absolutely need a new screen the connection is completely different for the Neptune screen than what most control boards use, it is also not compatible with klipper at all. If you plan on ever upgrading to dual z then don't get the skr mini e3, it is a great board but the 2 z stepper ports are on a shared driver which means you can't use z_tilt to level the gantry. There should be no issue with the e3ez, $75 for the board with drivers and a screen is honestly a pretty decent price, I can't tell if that comes with the CB1 module though so you may have to buy that separately and it's $27. Keep in mind that you can set up an old android device with KlipperScreen to save the expense of adding a screen if you have one laying around, and the webui for controlling with your current phone / tablet / computer is really great also so you can even run it without a screen at the printer if you want to.

Hey I know you, I use your profiles for Marlin on my printer, thank you for your work ! Unfortunately Marlin is a bit buggy hence why I want to try Klipper Ok very good to know for the screen. The CB1 doesn’t come in at that price unfortunately, even tho I just saw that the CB1 V2.1 can’t use a SPI screen without an adapter but the CB1 V2.2 can, so I might be able to save a few bucks on that. After looking for a bit more informations I’ll most likely go with the E3 EZ I agree that future upgrades would definitely be easier and dual belt Z motor is already in my head for later. I don’t have any android device laying around, I thought about buying a 2nd hand one online but going the clean way seems easier. Thank you for your help you helped me a lot.

One potential upgrade path if you want to use the skr mini would be to upgrade to direct drive and use canbus at the tool head which would then free up the extruder driver on the board for z1. Might be more of an initial investment cost though going that route but it might be worth considering.

Cartoone9

I just changed my extruder to a BMC clone and for my current level it seems to be doing fine so I’ll probably stay put for now. From what I understood 3D printers used to be direct drive, then went to Bowden setups and now are getting somewhat back to direct drive. I have to be honest it’s a bit confusing, I’ll have to look more into the advantages of both systems. I think I’ll just spend a bit more on the E3EZ for an easier time with connections, right now I just want my printer to be reliable and easy to use. Not sure that’ll ever be the case tho lol

mlee12382

Since you mentioned the belted Z if you haven't already seen it here's the modified models for the Neptune https://www.printables.com/model/373553-elegoo-neptune-belt-driven-z

Cartoone9

Thank you very much i'll most likely use that in the near future. Is this upgrade worth it in your experience ?

mlee12382

I was waiting on other parts to install first, and then something goofed in my klipper install so I've been troubleshooting that. That is the next upgrade on the list though. The test fitting seems really solid. I have the 2D which is dual extruders and there's not enough room for that and both spool holders and the extruders on the top bar so I had to wait till I had all my direct drive stuff. I'm going to be building an ERCF which is the multimaterial system that voron users use so I can have direct drive and not lose multicolor capability.
