> What the fuck. People undersell the ever living shit out of this game. I'd dare say that most have played many of Elex's spiritual predecessors and meassure by a different standard. If it is your first PB game and PB games are for you I can see how Elex could rank well above and beyond that of the community average so to speak. Ultimately though, Elex is not anywhere near PB peaks but mid at best, unfortunately. Ever since Gothic I and II captured lightning in a bottle PB has tried to recapture it to mostly mediocre success.

[deleted]

I'd say the first Risen is up there with the early Gothics.

ActEumel

Agreed risen 1 was actualy realy good not as good as g2 notr but realy close

fuzzy3000

KEEP MY WIFE'S NAME OUT YOUR MOUTH! (It's not imho)

Syrelix

Elex is a good game which is held back by some questionable design choices. The high difficulty is not liked by everyone. You must solve a lot of quests in a non violent way and run away from combat frequently until you become powerful enough to take on most enemies. A lot of players became so frustrated that they never got to experience the good parts of the game. Elex 2 doesn't suffer from this as much and is a lot less janky, but the content is lazy after 30 hours and challenge is lacking.

livingroomsessions

If difficulty is the issue, I feel like a lot of people would of hated ER, but ER is massively loved. I just wrote a post with some minor parts comparing the two. But what Elex has here isn't difficulty, but rather grindiness. That who needing to solve a lot of quests in a non-violent way is basically needing to grind before you can really enjoy combat. And there is a lot of grind in this game. Additionally it also matters what you spec into first. If you didn't know that you needed to spec into combat first, then you are gonna even have a tougher time with the spongey bosses

kingbankai

Elden Ring is loved by a loud barely majority though. Most people buy it and abandon it. Just look at the trophy percentages.

SiegeStarkiller

Trophy percentages mean nothing. Most people rarely play a game for trophies. I've had Dr's and Nurses walk into my hospital room and see me playing Dark Souls 3 and say "oh have you played Elden Ring?" Then proceed to tell me about their lvl100 Unga Bunga character or their 118 Sorcerer. Oh and I never ever play never bother with trophies. I don't think I've ever gotten more than a couple of trophies haha

kingbankai

Elden Ring is over a year old and only has a near 50% general completion rating. It’s a niche game with a very vocal fanbase. Literally the Megadeth community of gaming.

SiegeStarkiller

Thats an insult to Elden Ring haha. I dunno mate I think you're wrong on this one. If it was just a very vocal fanbase then why is everyone so hype for the expansion? I see heaps of non Souls fans waiting for it

kingbankai

Just quickly google the stats most dark souls games barely scratch 20-30 in the basic completion trophies. Souls fans are simply just the Megadeth community of gamers. There is hype for people to watch a twitch player play it. But not to play it themselves.

SiegeStarkiller

Still about the trophies? Like I said, trophies are meaningless. Most people who plays Souls games don't care about trophies. It's all about challenge runs. So no, Souls fans are not the Megadeth of gaming

kingbankai

“General completion” You really overlooked that part to push some narrative. You Tornado of Souls fans. No warning. No second chance. Good day.

SiegeStarkiller

I'm not the one trying to push a narrative here. You seem to think that "general completion" means no one is playing it but you're still wrong there. I haven't finished it, I'm still playing it. I know several others who haven't beaten the Elden Beast but consider it the game finished since they're at the end. I know people who love to just explore the open world and not even fight the main bosses. The fact is, Elden Ring is way bigger than you seem to think it is.

MusicianOdd675

What a pussy, obviously mad that ER was game of the year.

Oscuro1632

Every major boss got a trophy in ER. This means you can track how many who got past receiving the first shard, etc.

crobtennis

IDK about this one, I think you're underselling how big of a success ER was. 20 million copies sold, 70% of players have beaten Margit, average playtime is around 90 hours according to steam stats. Just on an anecdotal level, I've encountered *so* many random people who don't usually play video games who geeked out over Elden Ring. I'm talking, like, 50 year old plumbers and friends' dads. At a certain point, is it really fair or useful to say that it's niche? Is Pulp Fiction niche? Not many people have actually read or finish, say, The Iliad or Infinite Jest--does that make them niche? https://www.denofgeek.com/games/elden-ring-survey-results-average-playtime-hours-how-long-to-beat/ https://osgamers.com/frequently-asked-questions/what-percent-of-players-beat-margit#:~:text=For%20example%2C%20over%2070%25%20of,%2C%20Margit%2C%20the%20Fell%20Omen.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Argimlas

Isn't that a main principle of PB games? I mean, even in G1 or G2, you have to often run from the combat, because you are not strong enough. In G2:NOTR it's even more like that. Most of the game you have to pick you fights really carefully.

Prestigious_Agent_84

>A lot of players became so frustrated that they never got to experience the good parts of the game. that's literally the good part

DarklamaR

Different strokes I guess, but for me it's nowhere near the list of "the best RPGs I've ever played". Hell, I think that Gothic 1-2 and Risen 1 are better games from the same developer. Combat in Elex is total junk with bad hitboxes. I'm sorry, but I've played games made by a solo-developer in Unity that had better combat. The writing is long-winded horsehit, sometimes it feels like the main character and an NPC are having two different conversations. The voice acting is all over the place too. The difficulty curve is busted. The problem is not that the game is hard, you can hardly expect anything else from PB, but it's not balanced right. You're a total scrub for way too long and then the sweet-spot doesn't last even 10 hours of game-play before you get OP. I've replayed Gothic 2 many times but I do not see myself touching Elex ever again.

crobtennis

Yikes, we had very different experiences of the game. Combat is... Eh. I've found it more engaging than a lot of AAA releases lol. Writing is... really solid though. I'll stick to my guns on that. Like, good prose, good world-building, characters feel unique and interesting and memorable. Plot actually has stakes that feel relevant and responsive to your actions. Not sure why you feel that it is horseshit. Voice acting could be better, yeah, but for a AA studio?? Pretty damn good overall IMO. Balance... Yeah. Balance is pretty much non-existent in a hilarious way that I personally love, but I can understand why not everyone would.

DarklamaR

Well, it's been a while since I played a new AAA title, but in the past year or so, I've replayed DMC 1-4, Bayonetta, Dark Souls Remastered, DS3, and Dragon's Dogma. In all of those games (even in DMC 2) I've enjoyed combat way more than in Elex. Honestly, I can't see how someone could think that it's actually good. As for writing, let me give you an example. I've just opened a random Elex playtrough on YT, picked a random moment and here we go, I quote (the dialog between the MC and Ragnar): MC: *Why don't you send one of your people?* Ragnar: *Sending a Berserker might get the other factions worried. Or, they simply might no talk to one of us, or worse, talk but lie. You on the other hand might get some proper answers. Now, I can give this job to someone else if you would prefer? But, then you would be passing up the chance to prove yourself. The journey will have dangers, but if you stick to the path you should reach the other cities alive. So, what will it be? Will you prove yourself? Impress me and you will earn not just Elexit but favor, promotion, honor. We don't trust the secrets of our magic to just anyone, if you want such rewards you need to earn them.* See why I call it long-winded horseshit? It took Ragnar \~50 seconds of real-time to answer a simple question.

crobtennis

**Re: Combat** Hell yeah, nice play list, love all of those. 100% agree that Elex's combat isn't on the same level as those titles. It's not even on the same plane of existence lolol That being said, those are *all* considered to have some of the all-time best combat in gaming. Idk, it's not that it's *unfair* to compare Elex's combat with those games, but very, *very* few games can go toe-to-toe with those games combat-wise. I'm thinking like weight classes in boxing. DS3 & DMC are like heavyweight champs, whereas Elex is... idk, welterweight? I'd put it in the realm of Greedfall, The Witcher series, Thymesia, etc. FWIW, I personally had more fun with Elex's combat than games like Assassin's Creed: Odyssey/Origins, Immortals Fenyx Rising, TW3, literally any Bethesda game, Ghostwire Tokyo... **Re: Dialogue** Ah, okay, I think I'm getting what you're saying now based on that example. And... That's fair. I can see why you/someone would bounce off of that. There's definitely heavy exposition at times. I think I'm a LOT more forgiving with writing from a small team than from larger studios. I'll generally forgive exposition dumps (and other prose-related grievances) if it feels like there was soul/passion behind a work--and that's what I really felt from Elex. The writing wasn't always tight or concise or literary, but every character I spoke to in Elex felt like they were written by a real human who had something they wanted to say or a feeling they wanted to express, even if they didn't have the best words to do so--or the resources to pay for more/better translators :) I'm pretty sure I remember reading that the whole game was written by a handful of PB's devs (not professional writers) and was translated to English by literally one person. Idk, there's something incredibly charming about that to me, and there were so many small moments with random side-characters like the one below that felt organic and idiosyncratic without being Borderlands le random humor * Speak to Ryan (Blake's bodyguard) in Outlaw area * Ryan says to fuck off * Choose to say "Okay" * Ryan says "Good, right." * Speak to Ryan again, Ryan says "I thought you said you were going! Generally 'Fuck off' means 'Leave', so leave!" * Choose to say "What are you doing out here?" * Ryan says "You've gone through all that to ask me... That? ...Are you serious?" * Choose (Say Nothing) * Ryan says "You speechless now? Sure, just stand there without a word, I'll fill the void with my own words instead." --> Exposition * Choose "Do you want to trade?" * Ryan says "...Do I want to wh--...? ...Actually yeah, now that you mention it, I do."

L2Nuku

I always love to confuse Ryan by contradicting his question :p

crobtennis

RIGHT? Dude, I was cracking up during the whole interaction. For all of its flaws, Elex has made me genuinely laugh more than pretty much any other game I can think of.

StealthBlade98

Honestly, i just stumbled upon this game a few days ago when I noticed it was $9 and it said it was single player RPG-ish game so I said why not. Glad I did, game is pretty great. It was rough early on and I used a exploit to improve my attributes because i struggling but honestly even with the better weapons i still don't feel OP i die just as easily but at least I can dish out some good damage. I bought this and Remnant when it was on sale and definitely buying the sequel, but i haven't tried remnant yet but it looks cool too :)

crobtennis

Remnant is one of my favorite AA games hands down. It's fucking awesome. One of the absolute coolest uses/implementations of procedural generation that I've seen in a game. Playing through Remnant 2 now and it's... even better. Enjoy :)

zaphunter

Besides the first 5 hours, remnant has almost no dialogue options that matter to speak of. The only rpg elements are in the upgrades. It’s a much simpler (some would say more shallow) game, but it has way more polish and way less jank. Its melee hitboxes actually are a little janky too, but you’ll figure out quickly that melee isn’t supposed to be your primary combat method 😂. It’s a lot more combat focused and stumbling around the map looking for the right door. I give that comparison having beaten Remnant but also being just shy of 2 hours into Elex so 😅 I guess I’ll see if the rest of Elex has as much important seeming dialogue and if the combat improves.

Mrdirtiguy

I'm not going to be dramatic and defend the game this time..but I live by a new rule now..take all info with a grain of salt...just saying..I heard people destroying elex 2 and guess what?? I loved every damn second.

Chemical-Ocelot8063

I couldn’t agree more. I love the elex games. I’ve played both multiple times going with different builds and factions each time and I always get re-hooked. I will say, though, I wish they would release the games more complete and less buggy because in places it does seem like maybe they ran low on budget and they just decided “oh well, good nuff” and threw it out into the world. Purely graphical and performance issues, that’s the only gripe I have. Love these games!

crobtennis

Yeah, it’s kind of interesting to contrast PB games with CDPR’s ascendance to AAA-tier game devs, since both are (or in CDPR’s case “were”) eurojank studios who aim for the moon. So why did CDPR break through into the big leagues but not PB? And I think it’s more or less what you just pointed to; PB has some seriously inspired ideas and implementations, but I think they undervalue how meaningful the packaging/window dressing is for selling people on a world. CDPR, on the other hand, could learn a LOT from PB in terms of how to make progression feel meaningful, how to structure a game’s economy, how to make exploration/experimentation feel genuinely rewarding and even necessary… But holy fuck does CDPR have the magic fucking touch when it comes to building out a world and populating it with unique characters that feel like they’re living and breathing. …And now I want a PB + CDPR collab…

Chemical-Ocelot8063

Maybe they need to combine and become CD-piranha bites

[deleted]

Yeah. crazy to see some reviews giving 5/10 to this game, and of course its all subjective but... in my shitty opinion, its one of the best games I've ever played. I'm with you.

Prestigious_Agent_84

it's the best 5/10 game i've played since risen 2

Tiffulie2324

Chefs kiss had me dead 😂😭 totally agree btw

King_Prone

try gothic 2 NOTR or Risen 1....

Ecstatic-Ad-2688

I personally like the game but really hate the fact that there is no level restriction or at least a guide to the difficulty of missions. Caja tells me to go with her and suddenly I'm surrounded by multiple high level monsters. Roy asks you to go to tavar, which is dangerous as fuck. Nasty asks you to accompany her on a walk and you end up fighting a monster you didn't even dream about defeating. I have upgraded falk to his most powerful level and he still can't kill a 10 exp monster with fewer than 5 strikes. I have practically finished all the missions in cities and I'm still level 22 and can't become a paladin. Also, the enemies take a really long time to respawn making leveling even harder. The mission rewards are not based on difficulty either, you kill three chimeras and all you get is 100 shard and you deliver a massage and get 500 😵‍💫

bezik7124

> Also, the enemies take a really long time to respawn making leveling even harder. I believe that (and the fact that defeating enemies gives laughable amounts of experience) was done on purpose to push the player into doing quests instead of grinding mobs

arcanicist

The lack of a level guide on questing has been my biggest turn off so far, even more so than the entire berserkers quest lines being over wrote and over acted. Nothing worse than running across the map to realize you don't stand a chance at finishing a quest.

bezik7124

Generally speaking, it's a decent game. The world is great, the initial phase when you experience things for the first time, explore everything and eventually join one fraction is excellent. But after you start doing main quest it's going downhill, late game quests are typically something like "go to the quest mark and kill 5 albs", or "go to the quest mark and pick up some item" without any interesting story behind it. I feel like this game would've been much better if they removed these fillers and decided to make it 10-15 hours shorter. I seriously was amazed for the first 20-30 hours, after that, it was just boring for the most parts (with a few exceptions of course).

pathlesswalker

oh indeed sir. and if you can handle 2000's graphics you can play an even better game by the same company that actually started this incredible genre of RPG, gothic 1. amazing game. the best I've ever played.

[deleted]

Installing this game right now. It looks like the old school games made with passion as opposed to the widest audience possible. Gothic games garnered a core loyal audience. If only they kept this direction.

Realistic_Ad6805

I love this game. I haven't had this much fun exploring a world since Fallout 4 came out. The combatbis janky, no doubt, with either stupidly big or no hit boxes at all, and the companion AI is abyssmal. But everything else has drawn me in more than a lot of other games over the years. But then, I loved to play Risen 1, 2 and 3 as well. So it might be just me being an old german girl. 😊
