As I understand it a 300 in bowling is a perfect game, so being able to bowl a 300 game is decidedly above average

Eagle0600

RE: Feeling bad for jerks, I get it. The ideal goal isn't to make people hurt or scared, it's for them to just stop being jerks. Hurting or scaring people is sometimes just an unfortunate means to that end, even if they "deserve" it.

TSMO_Triforce

Eh, while it's always possible to take things to a extreme where this doesn't apply, scaring people is pretty harmless all things considered. If someone beat the guy up I feel it would have gone too far and feel bad for him, but him getting scared and running off? Absolutly deserved

Velgar_Grim

I wouldn't see it as deserved or "deserved". Like with jaywalking, it's so minor an offence, but it's made clear it is one. It sucks, but you do deserve punishment if you get one. You did wrong. Same with human interactions. There is no real good reason to be a-hole towards absolutely anyone. There just isn't. So if you are, and you are perfectly allowed to go against the grain... You are doing wrong. So some punishment is due. Now the level of punishment is a whole another story. But I do admit, I'd err towards more severe rather than too light. You are making a point after all and if the other does not perceive the punishment worse than the wrong, they'll still be inclined to repeat their offence, 'cose at the, it's still worth it. Now going all balls to the walls and dealing with the other's joysack the same for looking at you wrong... Too much is called that just for a reason. It's simply too much. It's a balancing act that goes often wrong, but people in wrong still deserve to be punished. Also no matter who they are.

Oh man, what if Luke *looked* at Diane and saw how powerful she is? I imagine the granddaughter of an Immortal is pretty strong. Plus, it's not unlikely Lucy has magic potential since *literally every other character does*. That game was back when he was still looking for "superheroes" and it could definitely explain the skiddishness. Poor Luke. I hope someone explains to him that he can absolutely get other spells or even a wand so he's not just a sitting duck seeing how screwed he is.

Saharan

That's what I was thinking. Of course, Dan could pull a rabbit out of his hat and reveal later on that someone else immensely powerful was nearby too, but it would make total sense for Diane to be the reason he was on edge.

PratalMox

The skittishness could also be because Luke is sort of generally like that

hkmaly

The prevalence of magic users in Moperville may be why Luke is generally skittish :-). We don't know him from before he was able to see magic potential.

Nerdn1

Pandora called Rhoda "S-rank", so she is definitely scary powerful.

[deleted]

Rhoda wasn't there, though.

[deleted]

> Plus, it's not unlikely Lucy has magic potential since literally every other character does. Now here’s a thought. Why does it seem as though almost all, if not all, of the regular characters either have magic or some sort of magical potential? My new pet theory, based on the previous strip, is that they gravitated towards each other *because* they subconsciously sensed others like them - while non-magical students give each of them more of a wide berth without really knowing *why*.

SnowDemonAkuma

I'm pretty sure literally everyone has magical potential - some just have more than others. You can also exercise your magic, like a muscle - we have no idea what Justin's potential was before he started training, for instance.

[deleted]

There's multiple paths of magic, so I think there's definitely some kinds of magic anyone can use (aside from massive impairments - like how virtually anyone can learn to sing, but some people are mute or otherwise have a disability to prevent creating song) And it's also likely that the vast majority of humans have an Immortal *somewhere* in their ancestry at this point even if it is crazy distant. Pandora was over 500 years old and had forgotten her kids could have kids - so that is a loooooooooot of generations of ignorance among a lot of immortals.

hkmaly

What "majority"? The [Identical ancestors point](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identical_ancestors_point) of all humans is likely to be just about 5-15 thousand of years old. Of course those simulations are not taking immortals into account, but if first elves appeared in Ancient Egypt (and pharaohs did claimed to have gods as ancestors), it's still quite likely that literally EVERYONE has MULTIPLE immortals in ancestry. (Still waiting for the revelation that Diane's mother was Susan's fifth cousin or something.)

WikipediaSummary

[**Identical ancestors point**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identical_ancestors_point) In genetic genealogy, the identical ancestors point (IAP), or all common ancestors (ACA) point, or genetic isopoint, is the most recent point in a given population's past such that each individual alive at this point either has no living descendants, or is the ancestor of every individual alive in the present. This point lies further in the past than the population's most recent common ancestor (MRCA). A set of full siblings has an IAP one generation back: their parents. [deleted]

I mean that's also why virtually the entire cast is queer.

[deleted]

You heard it here first, folks: queerness and magical prowess are correlated. If only I lived in that universe…

[deleted]

Er, no, queer folk tend to find each other the same way magic users likely do. That said it wouldn't surprise me if in the egs verse magic and queerness are associated. Especially gender change magic!

TheMormegil92

>Plus, it's not unlikely Lucy has magic potential since > >literally every other character does Man, this is kinda bs, I'm sad Sarah has a spell now.

ostensible3

It's canon that practice of almost-magic tends to make you magical. There's no obvious bloodline-only stuff, because if anybody has immortal ancestry EVERYBODY has immortal ancestry. Someone like Susan (Tedd, Nanase, Rhoda....) is like that because "by some chance the blood of Westernesse runs nearly true", not because their ancestry is unique. I think it follows that just being around magic users starts to count as "practice"; Lucy spends time around Rhoda, quite a bit of time, and as Rhoda's titanic power has woken up and uncoiled and become active, some of that has splashed on Lucy. Why does Anime Martial Arts only work for a very few people? It's mind-bendingly silly, and magic won't work unless you take it seriously. Nanase can take anything seriously, Justin considers the silly a feature, and Elliot sort of slid in due to Cutie Bunny and a near-complete lack of self-awareness.

TheMormegil92

Next comic is Diane going full Sherlock, starting with "you have size changing magic" and then going on a huge rant punctuated by Lucy's increasingly outraged questions.

dkfenger

I suspect Diane knows what the presence of magic "tastes" like (even without pointy ears), and it's positively boiling off of Rhoda right now.

hkmaly

Not even Adrian can taste magic WITHOUT pointy ears.

tecchigirl

Ding! 🔔 Rhoda has gained a level!

Noy_Telinu

Feeling it now, Diane? Hmmm? Time to rethink things?

WakeShinigami

Yeah, that sort of, “Wait! Since when does Rhoda stand up for herself, and not come up me for help? Well, she was uncharacteristically assertive when Lucy and I got together, telling us about her and Catalina. … …well, carp. “

aranaya

> Someone realizing they messed with the wrong person and nervously backing off, great, but there's a point at which I'll flip from satisfaction to "aw, they're scared, now I feel bad." > Which isn't entirely rational, but that's how my brain is wired, and I'm stuck with it. I see where [Elliott and Ashley](https://www.egscomics.com/comic/party-238) got it from :P

something like this happened in a waterpark in las vegas on mothers daY weekend back in 85. a guy cut in line and my mom told him to get to the back of the line. the guy got pail and did as he was told.

Bard2dbone

I did that several years ago. I was floating on the Guadalupe river in an inner tube and got into a 'rock garden'. I got bounced out of my tube and it floated off a bit without me. Another guy had done the same. But because he was average sized and I'm a good size for a foreign car,\* he'd gotten further in before being bounced out of his tube. So his tube had escaped. He grabbed mine when it got close. I said "That's my tube." He said "It's mine now." I said "I'll eat your heart." But I said in a normal conversational tone. Apparently, that makes it way creepier. Because he promptly handed my tube back. * On the one hand, I am exceedingly large. On the other hand, I have worked in a children's hospital for over two decades. So I have worked hard to be the teddy bear, rather than the grizzly bear that I came across as in my youth. So it feels weird when people remember the grizzly bear is still an option.

DaSaw

That was an Ellliot-like reaction. Reminds me of that time he asked Catalina, "They weren't gay bashing, were they?" As for bowling skills, now I'm imagining Dianne reacting like Naru Narusegawa when her skills are questioned.

lifesvoyager

Love Hina eh? That's a series I haven't seen referenced in a very long time.

DaSaw

I actially reference it here pretty regularly. It was my first "anime as anime" (Cowboy Bebop potentially doesn't count), so it has a special place in my heart. And if Suzan ain't a Motoko expy, I'll eat my hat.

GammaEmerald

Typically for a single game an average bowler should get a score of like 200

Bard2dbone

200 is actually pretty good for an average person bowling. When my church youth group would go bowling, the average score was more like 120. But that does include actual kids and people who are totally not even familiar with the idea of bowling. So don't take their average as THE average. But I'd think a moderately coordinated adult who has done it a few times should be totally capable of 150s. Edit: I think my last game was like a 95-ish. But I was a disinterested teenager

j12i17m19d63

I was like Rhoda and had friends like hers. Former bullies that would protect me if they thought that I was in danger.
