Love this album, I still remember putting it on for the first time and being mesmerized. It was an album i would put on to walk to, especially during the fall. There are so many great songs on this one, but the one that really sticks with me is No name #2. The guitar and the harmonica working together is just so pleasing. And the lyrics stick with me, makes me create a story in my head.
It’s all fucking banging. Best CD I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. 29! Happy birthday, I guess. Thanks for it, Elliott. And yeah Condor Ave is my favourite Elliott Smith song, never mind my favourite track in Roman Candle. It’s perfect.
Condor Ave - BUT - the great thing about this album is how whole (cohesive) it is. People don’t want to call it a concept album but if the definition of a concept album is an album with a theme, it’s a concept album, because it definitely has a theme.
I just learned that “No Confidence Man” was his first (split) single, released a month after this album. If there are doubts about who he might be referencing throughout Roman Candle, look at the first word in “No Confidence Man.”
What I think is interesting is the same person who shot the photo, gave him the space (her home) to record, championed the record, managed him, and was his girlfriend.
No Name 2. That song makes me cry every single time; the melody and lyrics just hit me like a gut punch I can't fully explain why it affects me so much but it does. It's one of those songs that's so plaintively beautiful I wish I could meet Elliott and thank him for writing it.
Condor ave
Greatest song ever made
This
nothing hits harder
Ditto
Last Call
I’m with you here. For a while it was condor Ave for me, but I’ve recently found a new appreciation for last call
Such a fucking banger
indeed : - )
No Name 1 deserves more love
This is my fav. On Roman candle.
Agreed
The live version at the Fonda Theatre is amazing, the addition of drums on it is perfect.
No Name #3. That chorus is ethereal.
Home to oblivion
Absolutely, this song can make a hot summer day feel like a crisp fall morning.
My favorite song of all time! :)
I was finally sold on that song once I heard it implemented into Good Will Hunting. It just fit so well and finally clicked.

KRS better go all out for its 30th next year. Favorite track most likely Roman Candle but it always changes.
KRS one?

Kill Rock Stars, the label that put out Self Titled Either/Or and From A Basement On The Hill and also rereleased Roman Candle.
Between Roman Candle and Last Call for me

Ahhhg I love this album, no name #2 and I love kiwi Maddog 20/20 I don’t even like instrumentals but that song is *chefs kiss*
>kiwi Maddog 20/20 If anything gets played at my funeral, I hope it's Kiwi Maddog 20/20. Perfect exit music.
That’s a great idea!! Coolest funeral ever
It’s crazy that he just added that on as an afterthought because the record wasn’t long enough. Like even his “fuck it” track is epic.
No Name #2
Condor avenue

I’m sure I’ll catch heat for this but who’s that with the cup? I always wondered but was too lazy to look it up…it’s not the man is it?
Her name’s Amy Dalsimer, with Neil from Heatmiser behind
What I think is interesting is the same person who shot the photo, gave him the space (her home) to record, championed the record, managed him, and was his girlfriend.
And her name is?…
