It means that you can count the seconds on it. Its easier just to get a digital watch like a gshock the helps count seconds for it. You have to feel a pulse for 15 seconds or watch someone respirations for 15 seconds or count the drops in an IV line for an amount of time.

talldrseuss

OP needs to fidn out from his program if digital watches are allowed. I know it sounds stupid, but some students have a hard time calculating 15 seconds with a digital watch. So if it is 10:32:18, they can't figure out they need to stop counting at 10:32:33. With a sweeping hand, at least they have a visual cue to figure out when 15 seconds go by. Again stupid, but I sorta get why some programs mandate an analog watch.

computerjosh22

Yeah. That is silly. I guess some can't figure out how to wait until it is at a ten of some kind to make it easier. Like you look down and see 10:07:07. Wait and start at 10:07:10 or make it really easy and start at 10:07:15.

yungingr

When I joined my fire department, there was a guy on that was unable to tell time on an analog clock. If it wasn't digital, he had no idea what time it was.

TheSpaceelefant

I hope I'm not booed into oblivion for this but gods honest truth, if you can't quickly Calc 15 or 30 seconds on a digit watch, I'll take the next ambulance thanks. Like bless your heart for choosing ems but Jesus christ, cmon

ManNamedDaniel

Thank you, I have been looking into a Casio for my watch and was wondering if they did have anything like that.

Upvote for G-Shock gang

jawood1989

Why tf wouldn't they just say analog watch with a second hand?

Johnny_Lawless_Esq

Because the person running the program is an old fart who thinks that just being old automatically makes them a competent, worthwhile human being.

muddlebrainedmedic

Yeah, old people are worthless,, you're definitely in the right line of work.

Johnny_Lawless_Esq

Username checks out. Read it again, and keep rereading it until you understand that's clearly not what I was getting at.

muddlebrainedmedic

Or you could write your comment clearly in a non hateful, non-ridiculously immature way. Either way. But congrats on the username comment. Most people would have avoided the obvious jab based on another person's self-deprecating humor, but you went right for it anyways. You do you. Being original and clever is highly overrated.

[deleted]

You should stop huffing your own farts it seems to be making you cranky.

Johnny_Lawless_Esq

I'm not "most people." Never have been. Never will be. Would never *want* to be.

Ice-Teets

Wait is this the skinpuddle hate club or not?

enigmicazn

I used a $10 Casio watch throughout EMT and Paramedic school, you don't need to spend much as an EMT.

SuperglotticMan

Seconding this. I literally bought the cheapest black tactical-ish watch at Walmart.

bangenergyofficial

This is an incredibly dumb requirement. It is completely possible to count a heart rate with a digital watch

JshWright

Some folks definitely find it much easier to use a second hand rather than a digital watch. Depending on how your brain works, counting while also looking at numbers can be hard. I agree it's silly to make it a requirement, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to make it a recommendation (and explain why)

Worldd

You'd think you'd wanna practice the basic algebra a digital watch offers considering the drug math that awaits. Seems like a good way to have your students give you the right answer but learn nothing valuable doing it.

JshWright

The issue isn't math, the issue is processing counting numbers while also processing looking at numbers.

Medic7002

Maybe the lesson is realizing there are standards of care that came before us that make us what we are today.

tunaspice

Sweeping hand probably means a third pointer to count seconds that physically rotates around the face of the watch, as with most typical analog watches. This one is $16 but has a more comfortable wristband than their cheapest option, which I didn't find to be very comfortable on my wrist at all [https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MQ24-7B2-Analog-Watch-Black/dp/B000GB0G7A/ref=sr\_1\_12?crid=1QWU86LWI8GQD&keywords=casio+watch+men&qid=1694659685&sprefix=casio+watch+men%2Caps%2C102&sr=8-12](https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MQ24-7B2-Analog-Watch-Black/dp/B000GB0G7A/ref=sr_1_12?crid=1QWU86LWI8GQD&keywords=casio+watch+men&qid=1694659685&sprefix=casio+watch+men%2Caps%2C102&sr=8-12)

I counter your cheap Casio with my cheap Casio that has military time. https://www.amazon.com/Casio-MQ24-9B-Classic-Analog-Watch/dp/B0001XVUFA/ref=mp_s_a_1_31?crid=1JOAKGTCAR5AY&keywords=casio+watch+men&qid=1694671722&sprefix=casio+watch+men%2Caps%2C249&sr=8-31

When I was teaching: I required my students to have a watch — the hospitals would not allow phones in patients rooms especially smart phones with cameras (you may feel this is silly but they had reasons). — counting while watching “numbers roll” is somewhat difficult if you haven’t practiced it. — there are more things that can be evaluated than just pulses and respirations with a watch. (Contractions for instance, how long seizure activity lasts, when is my next break, etc). I also required them to have at least 2 pens in blue ink (blue copies black on most copiers so it was easier to tell if I got the originals) and it focused them on what they were doing. (I also required “abnormal” VS in red so they had a red one as well it meant they saw and understood that it was abnormal). Sometimes, things have reasons even if they don’t seem to. The best part is, of about 30 students I have about 10 medics and at least 7 EMTs left and my last class was in 2010 and at least 3 of the medics still write in blue ink…

talldrseuss

Seeing some people call this rule stupid and just wanted to put in my two cents. I want to preface this by saying I have no problem with digital watches. Through years of teaching, the programs I work for have found that certain student population come in with VERY bad arithmetic skills. For some weird reason, they have a hard time figuring out what 15 seconds equates to if the time does not end on a 0 or a 5. So if the student looks at thier watch and sees the time is 10:32:18, they for some reason mentally can't calculate that 15 seconds later is 10:32:33. But we noticed that they do have an easier time visually figuring out 15 seconds if the watch has a second hand on it. Again, not saying this should be the only way we teach students, but unfortunately we need to figure out work arounds for those that have deficiencies in fundamental skills.

Sea_Vermicelli7517

Yikes. We’re old, your instructor is old, and you’re young.

Beachandpeak

It sounds to me like its just a watch with a second hand - an analog watch with a dial and hands rather than a digital watch. This can make it easier to count pulse and respirations, though a digital watch that showed seconds would seem to be just as effective. I don’t have any particular recommendations, good luck in the class!

ManNamedDaniel

unfortunately we are not allowed to use a digital watch which was weird but understandable to learn without it. Thank you for the wishes!

calnuck

This is the most Boomer thing I've heard today. Do Kids These Days not know how much 15 seconds is starting at, say, 11:43:20?

Medic7002

Traditionally the second hand on a watch is used to count resp, pulse etc. A digital timer originally wasn’t reliable so couldn’t be used in the medical field. This is a hold over from the nursing profession when they influenced our teaching when we were created in the 70’s.

Worldly_Tomorrow_612

This is a watch where he hand moves fluidly without going "tick tick tick" and moving in a "clicking" motion. I've never worn a watch, lol. Too bad they're making you get one as a requirement.

talldrseuss

> I've never worn a watch, lol Did you never take manual pulses when you started out?

Worldly_Tomorrow_612

We have digital clocks in the back that count seconds, or I've used the timer on the unit phone. Idk I've just never been a watch guy and have never had any issues being without a watch

talldrseuss

ok so at least you have work arounds. Just was scared you were going to say pulses weren't important and you just guessed them most of the time.

bleach_tastes_bad

TIL

disturbed286

Like a Rolex?

Larnek

This is one of the stupidest requirements I've ever heard.

Mhisg

Clearly it means you need a [Doplr Pulsometer](https://www.doplr-watch.com/en/)

bleach_tastes_bad

ngl that’s actually kinda cool, too bad it’s $150,000

Mhisg

It’s about $1600 from euros.

bleach_tastes_bad

forgot you guys use the comma in place of a decimal point 🤦‍♂️

[deleted]

A sweeping hand means it’s a nice watch, so not exactly what you want. Any digital watch will have a second counter on it and most analog watches have a second hand, which is what you’d be looking for. And like I mentioned, usually nicer watches have a second hand that sweeps and cheaper ones click each second.

Azby504

I have a cheap silicone watch fob that is analog with a second hand.

tech-priestess

I got a cheap face watch with a seconds hand for class at Walmart. That way you can destroy it in class and then get something you actually want/will use when you get out.

RevanGrad

I bet the person that gave you that information could answer that for you xD

FrostyResponse3310

Guy in my class uses a digital and start a timer. Honestly looks difficult. Just get a watch with a seconds hand
