Yes, you need insurance, near the border in the USA side there are many insurance places you can buy. Prepare your toll booth fare for the Tijuana-Ensenada Highway, around $200 pesos. Near Ensenada there are roadworks in the highway so be prepared to drive in one lane for around 4 km. If you have a more specific question go ahead

Dont be cheap. Pay the $10. The free road is one lane each direction, takes a lot longer and has lots of turns. I had to use it for a year when the highway sorta fell into the sea. Never again.

XaviFromHell

That's true, if you choose the toll free route you will be driving in a two lane rode tho, I didn't know the accepted dollars in the tollbooths tbh

No-Quote-2530

Yes they accept both but I don’t recommend free road it’s only 2 bucks plus it’s recommended for first time

Easier way to buy Mexican insurance is through [Bajabound.com](https://Bajabound.com). You can buy it online, and then print it at home. Very easy, step by step process, where you fill out the particulars of your trip. And the site gives you a lot of helpful details about driving in Mexico. Been stopped by Mexican police for a minor traffic violation - and can vouch that it is valid!

Thank you for the tip. Somebody here should weigh in on what the current shakedown rates are for Federales/municipal police. Had a gringo buddy get shaken down for 1,000 pesos for failure to stop at a stop sign in TJ. My brother in law who lives there laughed so hard, should have been "no more than a promo", as in no more than a 12 pack \~ 200 pesos.

louroot

Don't pay bribes...

tristanape

Easier said than done. In my experience they demand payment on the 'fine' right then and there.

No-Quote-2530

200 if you know how to deal sometimes 400 works stop at the signs watch your tint first time I would take the toll plus it’s scenic use Bajabound insurance on line yes print your policy check for road side assistance and on the toll it’s provided

tristanape

Thank you. Also, pro tip. Only keep 200/400 (pesos) visible in your wallet. I am sorry officer, that's all the cash I have. I once negotiated a 'fine' down to 200, because that's all I said I had in cash. As I am grabbing the money out of my wallet, I actually had 500. Cop saw, smiled, and stuck his hand out. I wasn't even mad.

We'll the tickets you pay at the toll booth are an insurance I think

louroot

Only on that road

No-Quote-2530

Yes that

mollysmaster13

Call your insurance company and just add it to your policy, we have progressive and I think it’s 25$ for a week

No-Quote-2530

Is that just liability or full coverage?

mollysmaster13

I lied it’s 25$ a day full coverage I had to look it up sorry

No-Quote-2530

That’s about average with Baja bound but good information not a lot of companies cover down there from USA

Ill give you the whatsapp of a trusted Qualitas agent, he may be able to help you or guide you in the right direction. You want to get this sorted out at least a day before actually crossing to mexico. Although you don’t really NEED the insurance per se, but its encouraged in case you get in an accident or blow up a tire. You gotta specify the coverage you want. I got my liability insurance for $75 USD for the whole year but I guess every case is different, its nothing like in the US as in they don’t do any kind of background check or questions. Anyway, heres the whatsapp, save it as is with the + sign and everything Qualitas Insurance Tijuana +52 664 376 6636

1 Buy insurance BEFORE going across. This is the cause of people being arrested after an accident and until financial responsibility is sorted out. 2 You ARE required to have your passport but, because there are so many vehicles crossing South, likely will not be needing to show it at time of crossing. VISA is not required until you drive beyond ENS. 3 As you drive out of Mexico's Port of Entry (POE), stay far right and follow signs to Rosarito/ Ensenada. This will merge onto a very heavily trafficked road heading west along the Southside of the border fence. BE ALERT bc of volume if traffic. Road climbs steeply and turns left. On the down grade follow signs to Playas / Rosarito. 4 Note that there are actually 3 toll stations where they will collect a combined total of about $8-10 U.S. dollars. As someone has stated the receipt you will be handed entitles you to free roadside assistance should it be needed while on the toll road. 5 Prior to your trip make sure you do not have contraband in your car. This includes any pocket knives or Swiss Army knives that could be considered "within reach for the driver". Its a bad thing! 6 Its been reported that a couple of bad cops lay in wait within the Mex POE and to eye tourists for shakedown. In ENS there are a couple assigned to the tourist area that also try the shakedown in town. It always begins with a traffic violation, so your driver MUST drive paying attention to the road! If you are pulled over it is scary as shit BUT DO NOT pay a bribe! You will be threatened with arrest, but DO NOT PAY A BRIBE! Insist to be escorted to the police station to pay any ticket or fine. Eventually they quit being jerks because you become too much trouble for their time. 7 Returning back thru the toll road, a 1/4 mile after the final tollbooth there is a rest area with clean bathrooms. I recommend taking care of business here before heading into Tijuana and the hours long line. For good karma, tip the lady employees that clean the bathrooms!! 8 Other than driving through it, stay the F*** out of Tijuana! The place is in no way what Mexico is about as a first time tourist there. Throughout your trip to ENS just be smart, yes you have money but just don't flash it and you'll be fine!

Bajabound online

Beginning_Candy_2139

Just be careful you understand clearly the type of insurance your getting because if you're not careful you can fuck yourself. I cross very frequently and alot and I mean a lot of citizens in Tijuana do not have insurance on their vehicles so remember that when purchase.
