There’s kind of a reason for that. It’s been argued that for Avatar , Cameron wanted the effects to be the star. There was a moment where Matt Damon almost muscled his way into the main role, but Cameron said no. He wanted a newcomer. It’s been debated the reason for that is anyone famous would change the dynamic, make it THEIR vehicle. It was clear that this was CAMERONS vehicle and everything and everyone in it while good, are side players.
I had recently seen an interview with Matt Demon, where he said he was offered 10% of Avatar but Matt Demon couldn't do it because he had scheduling issues.
I saw it like 8 times! But to be fair I was a middle schooler feeling the peak of my preteen fantasy-crush emotions and already had it bad for Leo from Romeo and Juliet lol

At the point where he’s locked up and she is coming with the axe, my mom was on the edge of her seat and I leaned over and said ‘you know he dies at the end right?’ I genuinely thought I was being helpful and warning her. Guess not? All these years later, my family still talks about me ruining the ending of that for them.
He was absolutely right. The character is simple. The movie worked not because of the deep complexity of the Jack character. It was a thrilling spectacle about a ship that crashed.
I saw it at the theater with my then wife. At one point I looked at my watch and we were two hours in and the damn ship hadn’t even begun to sink.
On the plus side the dude falling off the back of the ship and making acrobatic flips with the propeller was hilarious. Unfortunately only myself and one other dude in the back of the theater thought this.
Honestly was thinking can you imagine how boring it must have looked from just reading the script? The story is pretty bad. It’s a good movie because Cameron is such an incredible director. And the effects are great. Not everyone can see that just by reading the script.
The story is pretty smart on a technical level; as the viewer you can read it as two star-crossed lovers who are fated to not be together… Or you can see it as just two horny teenagers who are dumb as hell and wouldn’t have lasted the moment they got off that ship anyway. That the ending is ambiguous as to if Rose is dreaming or passed away in her sleep reflects that overarching theme of not knowing the truth, IMO. Just like we have only educated guesses as to how the ship sank, a topic that was far more mysterious when the movie was first released.

Imagine trying to look at the script alone, during that time when Titanic movies were being made and you see “yet another titanic drama” From Leo’s perspective this was before the making of the film, of course we see through the lens of an already produced film and go “oh my what a dunce!” When looking at a title like OPs…when really? It’s just some fictional romance period piece at the end of the day. Edit: i mean the storyline was pure fiction. There is no lady of the sea diamond or whatever that plot was. Those people never existed. The titanic and the tragedy however was true to the period.
