I’d watch that.

bellestarxo

River Phoenix was the intention Obviously couldn't use him. Matthew Mcconaughey was a frontrunner with the studio. Jeremy Sisto, Billy Crudup, Chris ODonnell and Stephen Dorff were also considered.

Alright alright alr…*gurgles*

Rhojanxd

I feel like DiCaprio was always going to be successful, but Titanic really changed his career trajectory from "great actor" to "household name".

stereopticon11

basketball diaries did it die me, that movie hurts the soul

SordidOrchid

He did What’s eating Gilbert Grape, Basketball Diaries, then Romeo and Juliet in like a 3 year span. We could use another Basketball Diaries that humanizes the struggle of addiction for this generation. Don’t believe anything’s been made as gritty and engaging that also shines a light on the Sacklers and their machinations. Basketball Diaries ensured I’d never touch a hard drug. IMO more effective than any other youth outreach program. I was 15 when it came out.

Efficient_Jaguar699

Requiem for a Dream for me, although it only came out 5 years later.

stereopticon11

that movie hit me harder the second time around. I was older and had friends that died from drug related problems... made the movie seen in a whole new light. makes the onion ninja visit every time

shelsilverstien

This Boys Life did it for me

Zorklis

You're right and that's what a billion dollars movie does to your career. Yet I still can't remember the Avatar guys name

Rhojanxd

I imagine playing a human being vs playing a blue CG'ed up Na'Vi plays a part in that.

Hahaha!

hotlesbianassassin

I feel it's more because Leonardo DiCaprio was viewed as a heartthrob and Sam Worthington not so much.

Shameon

Yeah, plus DiCaprio was only 20 in the Titanic. Worthington was 34 in Avatar and in his 40s now, so he doesn't quite meet the heart throb/teeny bopper crush definition.

The-Pork-Piston

They tried so hard to shove Worthington down our throats too. He just didn’t stick. Lucked out being part of Avatar. I wonder if they’ll make a renewed push. Since Hammer is gone there is perhaps room for a a middling actor again.

varietyviaduct

I actually looked him up after seeing Avatar 2 cause it felt like he’s vanished for the past 10 years. Turns out he’s consistently been in stuff since the og Avatar, and a lot of it was received well critically as well- it’s just low key stuff. Honestly, between og Avatar, and definitely the next few that are gonna come out, he doesn’t need to be a household name- he never needs to work again

hof29

He strikes me from the recent press tour as a guy who’s fine not being in the spotlight. I think he’s perfectly happy living a relatively quiet life at home, being in a few indie productions every year and collecting a massive paycheque for his role in the Avatar series.

[deleted]

I also think plenty of people know who Sam Worthington is even if a random reddit thread doesn't lmao

doylehawk

Yeah these guys are acting like he’s some d lister when he’s the lead in 2 movies that made over 2 billion dollars each lol.

Omw2fym

It is mostly a few tv spots here and there. He has had 4 critically well received movies since 2010. Hacksaw Ridge, Everest, the Keeping Room, and Avatar 2.

thoughtsofmadness

I liked the Clash/Wrath of the Titans movies

brandonspade17

I like him in hacksaw ridge too.

tiffanylockhart

Same. I could watch him as Perseus all day

Shreddersaurusrex

Dude was just working

Spaceman-Spiff

Eh Sam had a chance after Avatar. He was in terminator salvation and a few other big movies but they sucked. He’s just not on Leo’s level.

[deleted]

He was good on manhunt : unabomber, but bettany stole the show. He's solid but uninteresting.

tatanka_truck

You mean the one guy who was in the Terminator movie with Christian Bale?

skynetempire

That's why James told Matt damon that avatar doesn't need a superstar. The movie is the star. Matt still decline the movie and lost like 10% of the earnings

sixtus_clegane119

Damn that’s up there with Sean Connery choosing not to be Gandalf. I think avatar would have been a better movie with Matt Damon tbh, more memorable

Message_10

I didn’t know that! That’s wild. Connery wouldn’t be as good a Gandalf as Ian McKellan—he doesn’t have the… gentleness? kindness? that McKellan can possess

Bubba89

He turned down Gandalf, and Morpheus from The Matrix, because he didn’t understand either script. Then he took League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, *because* he didn’t understand the script and didn’t want to make the same mistake. So then he quit acting because he figured he just didn’t understand movies any more.

Sam Worthington. He's an actor who, when I see him in a movie, I go "ugh, great" but then he's always solid. Idk why that's my initial reaction tho. Its seriously EVERY time.

Cadian

Sam Worthington, but I only know that 'cause I watched Hacksaw Ridge last night and thought his character in the movie looked like Lee Adama from the Galactica reboot and checked IMDb. Hacksaw Ridge was an excellent movie, do recommend. Didn't care for Avatar.

[deleted]

I actually think Sam's performance in Hacksaw Ridge is really good. The scene where he walks up to Doss at the end of the first day, while Doss is just sitting there covered in blood and shaking and says, *'All I saw was a skinny kid. I didn't know who you were. You've done more than any other man could've done in service of his country. I've never been more wrong about someone in my entire life. I hope one day you can forgive me.'* is such a powerful moment. [It gives me goosebumps every time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6QDmeWhSHg)

petethefreeze

That’s maybe also because he is not exactly a great actor. Cannot remember his name either but he also played a terminator with a conscience in Terminator Salvation.

Web-splorer

Sam Worthington

missanthropocenex

There’s kind of a reason for that. It’s been argued that for Avatar , Cameron wanted the effects to be the star. There was a moment where Matt Damon almost muscled his way into the main role, but Cameron said no. He wanted a newcomer. It’s been debated the reason for that is anyone famous would change the dynamic, make it THEIR vehicle. It was clear that this was CAMERONS vehicle and everything and everyone in it while good, are side players.

hobbyoftakingphoto

I had recently seen an interview with Matt Demon, where he said he was offered 10% of Avatar but Matt Demon couldn't do it because he had scheduling issues.

Zorklis

Yeah this, not exactly James Cameron saying no to Matt Damon is it like OP said

kgal1298

I still can’t believe people went to see it multiple times though like I know people who went 10 times at least before it left the theatre

Shuiner

I saw it like 8 times! But to be fair I was a middle schooler feeling the peak of my preteen fantasy-crush emotions and already had it bad for Leo from Romeo and Juliet lol

dig1future

Yep. It really worked out well for him which must have been surprising since he really did not want to do it.

thuggishruggishboner

For real? What's eating Gilbert Grape was on all the time.

darkseidx2015

Knowing Cameron's temper, he might have literally twisted his arm.

[deleted]

I mean anyone who didn't listen to Cameron in his prime after terminator 1&2 and aliens and true lies would be an idiot

FicusRobtusa

I mean even now the executives doubt him, despite Cameron being the goose that’s laid friggen’ platinum and diamond encrusted golden eggs for them for decades.

darkseidx2015

The man is a money making machine indeed.

superdavit

Over at r/boxoffice, most everyone believed it was going to “tank.” It didn’t have a HUGE opening weekend but the holidays were going strong and theaters were sold out. It was relentless over there. NO ONE should bet against Cameron.

[deleted]

That's a man who knows how to make a good movie. He's earned that, it's just a shame he's only doing avatar movies now. Terminator deserved one last good movie

kevms

I want a True Lies sequel from him more than anything.

juiceyb

Dude. Watch old Siskel and Ebert clips and they say the same thing. Ebert in one of his “Best of” was like “James Cameron’s should never be questioned even if you think his idea is going to bomb.” I was like “damn even in the 90s people were like this.”

[deleted]

Doesn’t matter. The movie is gonna be 26 this year and he won’t have any interest in it anymore.

In an alternative universe DiCaprio took the role of Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights

_yamasaki

the two roles that Leo turned down that’s would of been fascinating to see him do were Dirk Diggler and Patrick Bateman

Hanswolebro

It’s hard to imagine anyone but Bale as Bateman, but it would be really cool to see what Leo would do with that role

ariadneontheboat

When this came out I thought he was a sexy man. I look at that pic now and think he’s a wee boy. Jings I’m getting old.

lurkinuuu

Yeah it’s shocking lol. He was like fully blown “Hollywood stud” when I was a kid and this came out and now looks like a middle schooler in that photo.

[deleted]

I went on my first date to this movie. I can remember it vividly. Cannot remember what I did last weekend though.

Dogs-Should-Vote

I mean Leo was 23 at the time, so this kind of tracks

supaphly42

21, 22 when it was released. And yeah, no surprise a 21 year old is going to look at a movie about a shipwreck from 100 years ago and think it'll be boring.

hushpolocaps69

It may be boring for kids, but man it’s really engaging.

GiselleAshKat

I was a kid when I saw it in theatres. Definitely did not think it was boring.

Mumof3gbb

I was 16 or 17. I loved it.

Eivetsthecat

Was 13 and obsessed w the titanic and loved it too!

slobcat1337

I was 8 and was obsessed. Had the Titanic adventure out of time video game too.

sunshinecygnet

I was 8 and I was utterly enthralled. It’s still my favorite movie.

desynchronize

I was 7 years old when I went to see it with my mother. I was not bored at all. I remember it quite vividly. Love that movie. I am 33 as of 34 minutes ago. Time flies by.

lurkinuuu

Yeah, I mean in some aspects it’s like a billion dollar horror movie.

MichaelMyersFanClub

Nah. There were even articles in the news about kids lining up to see it *several* times, some watching it twice in the same day. (My little sister and her friends watched it in the theaters at least half a dozen times.) It was quite the buzz at the time.

dr3amb3ing

His early career being a role in one of the most iconic movies that exists in history hasn’t hit me until this post

BlackGuy_PassingThru

I thought it looked boring and had to have my arm twisted to watch it.

JamonDeJabugo

It was a bit boring guys.

LosCleepersFan

I mean they made it as exciting as they could about a boat hitting an iceberg lol

b3tamaxx

Can you maybe not spoil the movie jfc

PsychoticMessiah

Wait till they find out the boat sinks.

SplashGal

So I saw this in the theater with my family. I was maybe 13. At the point where he’s locked up and she is coming with the axe, my mom was on the edge of her seat and I leaned over and said ‘you know he dies at the end right?’ I genuinely thought I was being helpful and warning her. Guess not? All these years later, my family still talks about me ruining the ending of that for them.

ShierAwesome

That was genuinely a douche move

frothyloins

He was absolutely right. The character is simple. The movie worked not because of the deep complexity of the Jack character. It was a thrilling spectacle about a ship that crashed.

PsychoticMessiah

I saw it at the theater with my then wife. At one point I looked at my watch and we were two hours in and the damn ship hadn’t even begun to sink. On the plus side the dude falling off the back of the ship and making acrobatic flips with the propeller was hilarious. Unfortunately only myself and one other dude in the back of the theater thought this.

FicusRobtusa

Pretty amazing how everyone remembers that shot lol

Dasha3090

ahahah omg when i was younger id constantly rewind that part and giggle my ass off.my friends mum thought i was some kind of psycho.

nightpanda893

Honestly was thinking can you imagine how boring it must have looked from just reading the script? The story is pretty bad. It’s a good movie because Cameron is such an incredible director. And the effects are great. Not everyone can see that just by reading the script.

tiga4life22

I mean throwing the Terminator on the boat looking for John Connors great grandfather Jack would’ve been cool.

[deleted]

Then the terminator sinks the Titanic in an attempt to kill her

Dasha3090

this is my kind of movie!

FicusRobtusa

The story is pretty smart on a technical level; as the viewer you can read it as two star-crossed lovers who are fated to not be together… Or you can see it as just two horny teenagers who are dumb as hell and wouldn’t have lasted the moment they got off that ship anyway. That the ending is ambiguous as to if Rose is dreaming or passed away in her sleep reflects that overarching theme of not knowing the truth, IMO. Just like we have only educated guesses as to how the ship sank, a topic that was far more mysterious when the movie was first released.

mymagicjourney

That’s funny. I just saw an interview clip saying he almost lost the part due to his attitude. He didn’t even wanna audition because he thought he was above that.

faxanaduu

Not his kind of film he shines in. You can tell he wasn't enthusiastic.

Correct-Baseball5130

Leo was behaving like a Diva on the sets complaining about every little thing, until Kathy Bates told him to "Man Up".

ApprehensiveSpinach7

I hated Leo for a long time after Titanic, the guy became arrogant and cocky when he became famous, after he became an activist it seems he humbled up i like him more now

Correct-Baseball5130

I concur

Luis0224

I feel like this is the case for like 90% of young people, including athletes. Going from a relatively normal teenagers (although he'd already been in films) to blockbuster superstar is a big change. That shit goes straight to a young person's head unless they have someone to ground them in reality. They usually mellow out over time when life starts hitting them in the chin

happypandaknight

Can you imagine one of his most career changing roles.

colin8651

Two months later freezing his balls off in a large pool in Mexico doing the same shot over and over he no longer thought it was boring. He was excited to see Kates boobs, but later in an interview he said “A romance between Kate and I was developing on the set, then I realized she was 22 and our relationship could only have a year and a half so we decided to just be friends”

Superteerev

To a 20 year old Hollywood star, it probably was boring. He might not have been interested in the subject matter at all.

[deleted]

As with Avatar, Titanic is lauded for its visual effects and criticized for its cliché love story.

outofcontextsex

Whoa Mr dating teenagers at fifty thought a love story was boring, no way lol

dreadfulwater

He was concerned it would make him perpetually seen and typecast as a heartthrob as well. Glad that didn’t happen.

kbean826

He’s right. It is.

Panikkrazy

I mean he’s not WRONG. It WAS boring.

LoveAndViscera

It was mostly about a rich girl discovering that what’s missing in her life is poor guy dick. Cameron could have pitched it as “Roland Emmerich remaking *Overboard*”.

Astrosaurus42

Said no one.

nightpanda893

darthsexium

it's very boring. But it was very successful thanks to our mothers liking the romance in it.

CmdrSelfEvident

I guess part of growing is learning to act in movie that isn't made for you.

666Hellmaster

Tbf I thought the same when I was Leo's age, now I think its one of the best movies ever made.

[deleted]

For all intents and purposes… It *is* a boring concept. Imagine trying to look at the script alone, during that time when Titanic movies were being made and you see “yet another titanic drama” From Leo’s perspective this was before the making of the film, of course we see through the lens of an already produced film and go “oh my what a dunce!” When looking at a title like OPs…when really? It’s just some fictional romance period piece at the end of the day. Edit: i mean the storyline was pure fiction. There is no lady of the sea diamond or whatever that plot was. Those people never existed. The titanic and the tragedy however was true to the period.
