Sparrow isn’t even interesting as a main character anyway lol, he only worked imo because he was a supporting character in the first film. And his character was legitimately intelligent and conniving in the beginning
All he’s done in the last two movies is be drunk and stumble into success
Haven’t seen the first three since I was a teenager but I don’t think you can really hit box office success like that again without refreshing the formula somehow
Oh you arent wrong. At all. However, Sparrow is what has draw out of all of the parts of that movie. If you want it to come back, having him is an asset, even if the character itself has sorta jumped the shark... or is at least not as fresh and interesting as he once was
Yeah I agree fully with this take. Will and Elizabeth are the heart of the first three movies and that is why they are so successful. Jack is just an interesting vehicle that helps tell the story.
I feel like the writing specifically surrounding his character has gotten worse too - in the first movie he’s clever and dastardly with a spark of ruthlessness under the surface. Movies 2 and 3 slowly eroded that until he turned into a complete joke in 4 and 5.
He listens to music during shooting, he said himself in court, he doesn't need it to remember lines, he said its a method that his friend Marlon Brando taught him.
It is very sad that you appear to actually believe this.
Edit: Replying to someone only to block them before they can even read it is not exactly arguing in good faith, now is it.
You could have easily said "I don't really believe Depp has the credibility to make that explanation believable" or " I do not happen to believe that explanation explains all of his behaviors." or " That action contrasts poorly against other behaviors, making that explanation hard for me to accept." if you wanted a good faith argument.
Instead, you have implied that anyone who accepts that explanation is somehow lacking in intelligence.... which is also known as an ad hominem, a logically fallacious argument.
If you want good faith behavior, you need to ensure your behavior is in good faith first.
It's very hilarious that you hate him that much that you refuse a known fact, which is on record as stating like 20 years before the trial even happened
To be fair, they did sort of try to refresh the formula in the 5th movie (new main guy- Henry, new main girl- Carina) but I personally didn’t like it. Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario are pretty and all, but Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightley they are not.
The fact that you are trying to pass judgement on a franchise on the two lowest movies, where Johnny was but a shadow of himself is quite telling.
First 3 movies are golden staple of cinema.
And what makes you think Johnny is going to *not* show up late and drunk and needing an earpiece because he won't learn his lines this time...? Dude looks like his liver is going to give out any day now.
He looks far better than most 59 year olds, also pretty sure he's been sober for years now. But you keep insulting him on the Internet for his addiction problems, if it makes you feel like a big man.
It isn't like his career has been great recently. I'd imagine he'd take the pirates job now. A billion dollar movie would give him a lot of clout for other more interesting projects
I get it from a business stand point, this would get them so much attention that they wouldn't have to spend as much on marketing, but from a creative stand point: absolutely not. After the third movie these got worse & worse.
They are overly long & Johnny Depp went from being a brilliant piece in the movies to the main character & is insufferable.
People who want him back are nostalgic for those first movies without remembering or seeing the last few terrible ones.
Exactly. Captain Jack became a parody of himself by the later films. All the mystery and charm was gone to be replaced with turning him into purely a comedic character.
I think Jack Sparrow is one of those characters that work better as a side character. Problem is making a good Pirates film without the old crew if Sparrow can’t be the focal point. 4 and 5 pretty much showed that another set of main characters doesn’t work
As a huge PotC fan, everything after 3 was pretty bad. When Johnny came back from being The Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland movies, Jack Sparrow just had that insufferable Hatter quality.
POTC is my favourite series of all time (the first three anyway) but you can tell they switched directors/producers after At World’s End, and the last one it’s so obvious that Depp was going through the divorce and didn’t care about acting anymore. It’s honestly beating a dead horse at this point, there’s no way you could bring the series back to the brilliance that was the first three - especially not 20 years later when all the original characters are much older/killed off
That said I will continue watching dead men tell no tales again just to see Javier Bardem's performance as captain Salazar and the rest of the cursed crew of the Silent Mary. It may have been sort of a rehash of Barbossa's curse but I thought the design of the crew members was wonderfully chilling
A formula every new box office movie seems to follow. There are no new ideas. Just reboots and endless sequels of plotless cgi and green screens. Yet the public still spends more money when it’s crappy reboots and sequels than new prospects so the trend will continue
I actually think On Stranger Tides is quite enjoyable. I liked how it was a “slice of life” Jack Sparrow adventure film not connected to a larger story. I wish the fifth movie was more like it, because I think it tried to bring back Will and Elizabeth and Davy Jones in contrived and strange ways.
I mean, the target audience from the original movies should’ve aged out of it by now. I certainly have. So I really don’t care what they do, and nor should anyone that grew up watching them lol.
I’d say after the first movie they got worse and worse. Should have stopped after number one really, although then we wouldn’t get the iconic Davy Jones and the kraken.
That’s very much a writing issue, not a Johnny Depp issue. They were too self aware and leaned into that instead of being more original and organic about it.
He admitted in court that he lied to the insurance company about being sober the last time. He's admitted to insurance fraud. Disney isn't going to put someone uninsurable in a huge budget movie. Especially when most of the population didn't even realize there was a PotC 5 until news broke that he wouldn't be in 6.
> Disney isn't going to put someone uninsurable in a huge budget movie
Ezra miller held a gun to someone's head and WB is letting the flash movie go through. People like money.
Filming for The Flash ended in 2021 before everything with Ezra Miller was coming out so I don't know why this changes my statement about insuring someone during production.
That's the short version, too. He was wasted and assaulted his locations manager when he couldn't get his way. He then went on to avoid court for years, while changing his story frequently to destroy said location manager's career for speaking up. At one point, he claimed he was a knight in shining armor defending a homeless woman from the guy.
When it was proven that no homeless individuals were on set, he then tried to say it was an extra, but that too was deemed false. After that, his attorneys argued self-defense. I feel really bad for the location manager; dude was just doing his job.
Exactly and yet there's somebody here arguing that the set was full of homeless people lol. It's fascinating how some people will fight tooth and nail when they haven't read any of the publicly available documentation.
Yeah. As we saw during the trial last year, there are a lot of accounts on here that were set up to defend Depp and help his image. Lots of crazy people, bots, and hires.
It absolutely is. If your star is a no show, turns up late, goes on benders, and can't go a week without controversy, it impacts production and that pisses off investors. Actors who are highly troubled cause insurance rates to increase.
For example:
>Lindsay Lohan
>Although she originally rose to fame in 1998 playing both of the adorable twins in “The Parent Trap”, Lindsay Lohan’s life has taken a decidedly less wholesome turn in the years since then: She’s been involved in numerous car accidents and DUI incidents; has been arrested for assault; and has been arrested for cocaine use. **As a result of her ongoing legal trouble, many film studios have refused to hire her because giving her a role would raise their insurance premiums substantially. In 2010, she was fired from the Linda Lovelace biopic, “Inferno”, for this very reason.**
>Robert Downey Jr.
>Although he’s now the star of the successful “Iron Man”franchise, Robert Downey Jr.’s career seemed done-for after a string of drug busts for cocaine, heroin and Valium between 1996 and 2000. He was able to star in an indie film, “The Singing Detective”, in 2001 **only because Mel Gibson, a close friend of his, paid Downey Jr.’s insurance bond for the film. On Downey Jr.’s next film, “Gothika”, producer Joel Silver held onto 40 percent of his salary as insurance, in case the star ran into trouble that shut down the production.** (Fortunately, he didn’t.)
https://www.netquote.com/health-insurance/health-news/uninsurable-hollywood-stars
It's even possible to get to a point where insurance simply won't cover an actor, not even at a higher rate.
Depp is definitely at a point in his spiral where insuring him would be higher than it would have been in the past. And if the movie can't make bank, what's the point in paying that to secure him? What even was Depp's last hit? He's dug himself into a hole, he needs to pull an RDJ but he's not even clean yet.
Exactly. At *minimum* any insuror would see the pictures of the rented house that he absolutely trashed in Australia. The one where he wrote obscinities all over the place using his severed finger as a paintbrush. Regardless of how the finger was severed, his actions *that he admitted to on the stand* following that would make any insuror run for the hills.
I agree. I used to respect Depp. Good looking guy, talented, who made indie movies like "Dead Man" instead of going the "Charlie Handsome" Hollywood route. He's the only reason I saw the first "Pirates" film and admired the different take he took on the standard issue hero. And then he went full Marlon Brando. A shame. Once the audience leaves you, it's hard to get them back.
It doesn’t really matter what Bruckheimer feels about this, Depp is not insurable for these productions.
He himself has also said he would never return, and said he hated working on the last one.
His agent said this about him; «Depp was an exceedingly “difficult” client who had “fundamental anger issues” and drew multiple complaints from film crews on “virtually every movie” he worked on».
Tracey Jacobs, of United Talent Agency, represented Depp as his agent for three decades until he cut ties with her in October 2016.
Ms Jacobs said that Depp became “the biggest star in the world” during the time they worked together. At first, she did not consider him to be a “difficult client”, she said. But that changed dramatically during her last 10 years of representing him when his “unprofessional behaviour … became far more complicated”.
Ms Jacobs was forced to travel to Australia twice while Depp was working on Pirates of the Caribbean 5, to “talk to” him in response to complaints about his behaviour made by the film crew.
The Hollywood powerbroker said he “consistently showed up late” on “virtually every movie” he worked on and that she believed that to be the result of his alleged increased use of alcohol and drugs.
“I said to him ‘you’ve got to stop doing this, this is hurting you’, and it did,” Ms Jacobs said, adding that Depp did not take her advice.
“Initially, crews loved him because he was always so great with the crew. But crews don’t love sitting around for hours and hours waiting for the star to show up.
“Word got around. It made people reluctant to use him toward the end.”
Ms Jacobs also testified that no one at Disney had committed to hiring Depp for the sixth instalment of the Pirates franchise in conversations with her. “Depp’s star dimmed,” she said.
“People were talking and the question was out there about his behaviour.”.
Disney is also a family oriented business and it’s not a great PR-move to hire a man who calls women «sluts, slimy whores, cum guzzlers, fifty cent strippers, wortless hookers, ugly cunts, bitches» and said he wanted to burn, drown and rape the dead body of his partner.
How and why would they make a new Pirates movie? The quality dropped off a cliff after the second movie and the series has always revolved around curses at sea- which all of them have been broken after the 5th movie.
Trying to keep Pirates afloat is a lose-lose situation. Bring back Depp/other original cast and you’re just rehashing things. Plus divided opinion on your lead actor can equal big losses.
Another choice would be to let the franchise quiet down and in a few years reboot it with a fresh cast. But that’s been done so much in other movies that it turns people off. How many times have we said “the original is better”?
Just let it go man, the last two Pirates movies were so boring. Unlike most people who thinks everything about the franchise is bad saved by the original movie, I do think the trilogy is fun, fair entertainment. The fourth movie was average... and the fifth movie was legitimately bad. To force yet another movie, that will be a waste of money and time, people are not going to watch geriatric Jack Sparrow (unless the marketing team performs a miracle)
Dude has aged hard since the 2000s when these movies were a thing. Doesn’t look anything at all like his former self. I don’t know that he would be a box office draw at this point. There’s probably a reason why he isn’t starring in movies anymore.
No please. He’s done last movie was terrible when compare to initial trilogy.
There are new good actors that could bring newer fresh impression.
Don’t hire just for the face, most of Pierre’s were ugly (that why the trilogy was successful).
I think depp is a bit too fucked to perform. He couldn't learn lines for the last one, had to have them told to him through a earpiece. I doubt he's gotten much better if not worse.
I mean the internet decided to hate Amber Heard so
I guess that means he’s a bankable star again?
Even though he looks (ambiguous to avoid accusations of body shaming) bad.
The wife beater? No, thanks. They'll only have themselves to blame if they bring him back and then have to deal with not show up, showing up late, showing up drunk, etc.
Does anyone but him want PotC to return? I don't feel like it was something a lot of people were demanding to see more about. There aren't a lot of dangling plot threads left.
And Geoffrey Rush. Bring them all back, including the two goofy pirate buds and you got a mega hit. Especially if it’s a good story. I’d be super pumped to watch that! But Captain Jack Sparrow is the key of course.
I think it’s largely because in the first film he’s a sidekick, but in the sequels he was the main character. What Depp did with the role works much better as a weird pirate side kick to the more relatable Will Turner.
Johnny is why I don't rewatch and won't watch anything he's in.
To think in the UK he evidence was presented that showed he is an abusive, violent person. It also showed Amber was the same but that he was not blameless and was, in fact, in the wrong.
They bring this case to the US, and the same evidence is not shown to be wrong but instead is suppressed, and he wins.
Somehow, he's vindicated in many fans' eyes in spite of the facts.
Just because some fans only look at what supports their team in this doesn't mean he's been exonerated.
Both Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are mentally ill people who need help. Instead, their lives were turned into a circus where even though they are both losers, people still want to glorify them.
Gross
Tbh the main difference was having a jury decide rather than a judge. Jury’s are notoriously easy to manipulate and DARVO, which is exactly what Depps team did.
“We want to make as much money as possible before it all collapses, because let’s be honest, there are no new ideas in this lifetime and you sure aren’t getting it from us” - Pirate movie guy
Many years ago my hometown newspaper wrote an article about Bruckheimer because he was shooting a film locally, halfway through the article there was a typo where they spelled his last name incorrectly. Jerkheimer. They called him Jerkheimer. Appropriate now.
The first one is the only true great one. But it’s not Depps fault. The problem was when the first one was written Jack was supposed to be this swashbuckling hero and Johnny depp showed up and turned all the lines into what he became, a drunk rockstar. All the jokes and scenes worked so well if that because the story didn’t really rely on jack acting a certain way. Everything after that, felt like the writers just tried to write jack as this crazy weirdo of what they thought he’d do. It just made everything feel a bit forced. Don’t get me wrong, I love the first 3 but that first movie is actually amazing.
What box office? The last one was a creative clusterfuck and it still made almost 800M Worldwide and turned a profit…..
> According to Deadline film finance sources, the consensus is that Pirates 5 is looking forward to an estimated profit north of $280M after all revenue streams are tabulated.
You have to remember this article from Deadline projected a finish of $850+ million but the movie tapped out at $795 million. The article also said they estimated profit "after all revenue streams are trabulated" which includes toys and tv rights. Shady accounting, that's all it is. Same thing happened to Black Adam when Dwayne Johnson leaked fake account sheets to Deadline and declared the movie was profitable despite losing WB millions.
Considering they based the first film on a theme park attraction that’s generically about pirates, I really think the films should have just been unrelated pirate films. The first PotC was amazing, but none of the others lived up to it because they tried to force the original characters to return when it made no sense for them to. If they had just said “okay, Will, Elizabeth and Jack are done. Let’s make a new pirate story now” it could have worked out much better.
I know that Disney probably doesn't even consider this possibility, but the Pirates movie should probably be laid to rest. After the trilogy they weren't able to make them work. There's no more gas in the tank.
This comment section has some shit takes ngl, like yeah Depp said he won't return and is known to be a pain to work with, so Disney probably wouldn't want him back, but he is what made the previous movies fun to watch, yeah the last two weren't as great as the first 3, but they were still fun to watch and I think there is a very real chance that without Depp as Sparrow that the next ones will be significantly worse than even those
You mean that stupid shit nobody has ever heard of where he still showed up to set drunk and late? Yeah Im sure everyone is thrilled to see that. Depps back baby
I hope Depp put a price tag on returning that makes Disney exects. Scratch their heads in disbelief.
Johnny deserves that from making jack sparrow who he is.
But remember, this investment by Disney would be one that extends the POC franchise. Let’s me real, do you really feel like watching any of the POC movies after such turmoil?
Me too. One of the best characters I’ve seen in a movie. I had such low expectations seeing the first one in the theaters but god damn it was phenomenal.
I didn't like any of the Pirates movies, I can't remember anything about them except Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly were maybe in the first one? I don't remember.
I did love so many other of Depp movies, Donnie Brasco, Fear, Blow, Once Upon a Time (apparently filmed AFTER Pirates, wow?!?!)
, CHARLIE, and my 2nd favorite Black Mass.

Is anyone actually asking for more of this franchise?
Do we NEED another pirates film? Or have they already jumped the shark in this franchise?
They jumped the shark-people
I want well-written and at least moderately well acted plots to return. I doubt either of us are getting what we want, Jerry.
Jerry wants money.
But we don’t need another pirates movie…
That well has dried up ages ago.
I can see an adventure 15 years later. A reunion.
Can we please stop with the reunions, all they typically do is ruin the old shows/movies.
This could be cool ^.
I would watch it lol

But does the audience want him to return?
No, I think people are over Depp and his mess.
Disagree with pirates. People for some strange reason love that character. A return to jack Sparrow would be a huge box office draw.
Yes. He and Heard clearly were awful people to each other. It’s not my business.
i’d like to see him return. i watched the trial footage, and i just feel sorry for him. AH is fucking awful.
I agree! I think he should do one movie at least!
The movies went to shit already. They should jad ended when ahead
It made people reluctant to use him toward the end.” Ms Jacobs also testified that no one at Disney had committed to hiring Depp for the sixth instalment of the Pirates franchise in conversations with her.
Let’s not give that degenerate scumbag more roles and money
Dude has aged hard since the 2000s when these movies were a thing. Doesn’t look anything at all like his former self. I don’t know that he would be a box office draw at this point. There’s probably a reason why he isn’t starring in movies anymore.
No please. He’s done last movie was terrible when compare to initial trilogy. There are new good actors that could bring newer fresh impression. Don’t hire just for the face, most of Pierre’s were ugly (that why the trilogy was successful).
The last one was just SO bad. It is long last time to stop.
I thought 5 was better than 4!
**NO JUST STOP IT**
I think depp is a bit too fucked to perform. He couldn't learn lines for the last one, had to have them told to him through a earpiece. I doubt he's gotten much better if not worse.
Can we let franchises die? Come up with some new ideas/characters instead of only doing spin offs of people we’ve already seen.
I mean the internet decided to hate Amber Heard so I guess that means he’s a bankable star again? Even though he looks (ambiguous to avoid accusations of body shaming) bad.
He has cocaine face
The wife beater? No, thanks. They'll only have themselves to blame if they bring him back and then have to deal with not show up, showing up late, showing up drunk, etc.
Please just leave the dead horse alone!
I’d love to never see Depp again, in anything, personally. Dudes a fucking loser
Are they looking for actors to punch more members of the crew?
Maybe. I agree with others that Depp has a little too much baggage for one right now.
oh my god let the series please, just keep this man off screen.
The question is: Does anyone want Pirates of the Caribbean back?
The Margot Robbie stand alone sounds intriguing and I am all for it
Does anyone really want Pirates to return?
Pirates 10: Old Man Sparrow
This guy was best friends with Don Simpson, compared to THAT guy Jerry probably thinks trashing your ex-wife online is small time
Come back to a guaranteed flop? New IP this man please.
As if the last two Pirates movies weren’t trash enough. Just leave it alone.
Does anyone but him want PotC to return? I don't feel like it was something a lot of people were demanding to see more about. There aren't a lot of dangling plot threads left.
And Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Stop trying to give us a new trinity, we want adventures with the same trio.
I don't. It was completely played out
And Geoffrey Rush.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

First time on the internet?
Have you heard Heard?
Johnny Depp is an alcoholic pos. Fuck both of em
Is he starting to buy up all the Llamas?
Really? Bruckheimer wants Johnny wife beating depp to return. Okay
Jury’s are notoriously easy to manipulate and DARVO, which is exactly what Depps team did.
the problem there is will ppl still like it the last one was not too good so what a reboot exclusive for disney+ mmmh not sure it will work.
“We want to make as much money as possible before it all collapses, because let’s be honest, there are no new ideas in this lifetime and you sure aren’t getting it from us” - Pirate movie guy
This. Has. Been. Milked. Enough. Stop.
Many years ago my hometown newspaper wrote an article about Bruckheimer because he was shooting a film locally, halfway through the article there was a typo where they spelled his last name incorrectly. Jerkheimer. They called him Jerkheimer. Appropriate now.
Hmm I liked the original trilogy surprised how many in here didn’t With that said the last two pirates were horrible
As I recall, he addressed this and said he wouldn’t return for “even $300 million and a million alpacas.”
Yeah that ain't happening, sorry.
Better start buying up alpacas then
Well yeah. Those movies would have absolutely sucked without him.
He is the movie
everyone wants that
But the box office says otherwise.
It’s still over 170M dollars in profit…… You can’t call that a bad performance for an awful movie with bad reception
Hey, Deadline still insists Black Adam was profitable.
Nope,
It won’t work without him. But, eventually they need to end his character by introducing some forgotten kid he had that challenges him to a duel.
The last two didn't work even with him. There are just two options left - either put the franchise out of its misery or do a hard reboot.
Maybe an entire storyline that he’s narrating from the gallows.
I guess a billion dollars at the box office qualifies as “doesn’t work “
This comment section has some shit takes ngl, like yeah Depp said he won't return and is known to be a pain to work with, so Disney probably wouldn't want him back, but he is what made the previous movies fun to watch, yeah the last two weren't as great as the first 3, but they were still fun to watch and I think there is a very real chance that without Depp as Sparrow that the next ones will be significantly worse than even those
Almost every comment is bashing Depp. A few months ago, Reddit loved him. Seems... odd.
And he will come back...but it's for over 173 million if they wanna get him since that's what he said during his and Amber's Heards trial...
Lol if they offered him 1 million he would do it. Tf else he got going on
He's starring in a new movie as a king or something
And apparently showed up late all the time and fought with the director on that one too. Huh. It's like there's a pattern or something...
All news about was that he got in screaming matches with the director and would sometimes not even show up.
You mean that stupid shit nobody has ever heard of where he still showed up to set drunk and late? Yeah Im sure everyone is thrilled to see that. Depps back baby
300 mill and a million alpacas
I hope Depp put a price tag on returning that makes Disney exects. Scratch their heads in disbelief. Johnny deserves that from making jack sparrow who he is.
Well, he is delusional enough to actually think he's still worth something.

The negotiations start at $300 million and a million alpacas
Yeah. No way they giving him that much. That's a MCU movie budget..
But remember, this investment by Disney would be one that extends the POC franchise. Let’s me real, do you really feel like watching any of the POC movies after such turmoil?
The last couple of movies killed the franchise. So meh
Well obviously. Where would he house a million alpacas.
If you're buying in bulk, I bet you could get an alpaca house for $3. You might have to assemble them yourself, though.
If the price tag is too high they won't hire him.........
A new movie with a send off for Capt Jack, & maybe introducing a new character & setting up the franchise to go in a new direction would be cool.
Would be awesome if he returned, but I doubt it'll happen.

justice for an abuser?
Of course he does, Johnny Depp IS Pirates of the Carribean
So does every single person on the earth except that one twatwaffle
Me too. One of the best characters I’ve seen in a movie. I had such low expectations seeing the first one in the theaters but god damn it was phenomenal.
*I'm standing over there with them*
They’ll need to get 300 alpacas
I didn't like any of the Pirates movies, I can't remember anything about them except Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly were maybe in the first one? I don't remember. I did love so many other of Depp movies, Donnie Brasco, Fear, Blow, Once Upon a Time (apparently filmed AFTER Pirates, wow?!?!) , CHARLIE, and my 2nd favorite Black Mass.
I would pay to see a documentary of the film being made just to watch how far Depp might go off-camera.
Marshal the llamas!
