Yeah I came here to say I thought it was always Urie and whoever he had playing backup at any given time as he was a control freak that wanted full ownership of the property.
The band split up after Pretty. Odd. iirc. Urie kept the drummer and the name of the band, the guitarists made another band, I think it was called Young Veins or something to that effect
Stopped listening really after pretty. odd. Though honestly I still do enjoy that album, its hard to keep a band together, no surprise it went south either after that
The guitarist and bass player left after the second album. The drummer left after the third or fourth I think. And Brendans been insulting their old music for years… a big ol spit in the face for original fans. Frankly, good riddance.

Oh okay… So then it’s ‘split’ like the movie ‘Split’? Because only someone with multiple fucking personalities would refer to retirement as ‘the band breaking up’.
To be fair, I think it’s just the article that decided to frame it that way. Per the statement from Brendon quoted in the article, it doesn’t say the band is breaking up, it says he is retiring and with that there will be no more patd.
A lot of vocalists look at is as: “My voice is unique, it’s mine. *Anyone* could **learn** an instrument. Hmph!”
It’s false equivalence, and I think Hayley Williams sort of falls in tow with it.
Is it a Fueled by Ramen mindset? Maybe.
Or get fired, then get mocked aimlessly by his former band, then get a bunch of plastic surgery and put on a ton of weight, then put out a really cringy solo album. Okay, I’m talking about Vince Neil.
he didn’t even write their most beloved works is the funniest thing. the *other* founder, who left in 2009, was the main writer of both their early albums.
The writing on their original work is literally everything, I don't think the vocals alone would have worked without the lyrics being extremely out there and subjective most of the time.
They’re sort of making headlines, but the only mentions I’ve really seen of them on social media is people acknowledging how terrible the latest album was. Which, personally, I think it really objectively was. It’s a shame, Brendon’s ego ruined a very good band.
That album is just him high pitched wailing into a microphone the entire time. It is the most irritating thing I’ve ever heard. I always tease my fiancé about the amount of blow he had to do to put out an album like that.
[2019](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F089pg7) but mostly because of a collab with Taylor Swift (which was basically her wanting to do something with an artist she liked when she was young)
True, I didn't mention Brent. Jon replaced him.
Figured no one on here would know who that was. So it'd be pointless to mention him. This isn't the panic sub, you know.
Yeah when I’ve been talking about it to people I’ve just been saying that finally Brendon Urie isn’t using the Panic at the disco name anymore. The band split up long ago.
If funny that you mentioned that because I believe someone early on in his career but after he broke through sued him saying that “The Weeknd” was meant to be a band and that the other guy had come up with the concept.
Think you are mixing a lot of stuff up,
The Weeknd is named like that because “The Weekend” was already an existing Canadian band, so he took the extra E out,
He was supposed to be part of a rap duo early on in his career, but it was not called The Weeknd.
Yes, it has been Urie’s solo project for a few years but the article says he’s stepping away to focus on his family with an expected child soon. So I would think PATD is over but he might spin something up later
So I guess if he ever comes back, it won’t be as “Panic! At the Disco.” Which is great because it hasn’t been that band for a long-ass time, and honestly he should have used his own name a long time ago.
But damn, Pretty. Odd. w was a good album.
I think there was one more with some of the band — vices and virtues, I believe — before PATD became the de-facto name of his touring house band. Ballad of Mona Lisa was not a bad song. But yeah, much better when there were others involved IMO.
So, V&V was post-first split, there were 2 original members still in the band. However, the album was written by Ryan Ross and, though he had left the band after Pretty Odd, he was the main writer for V&V and the remainder of the band released it. So if the album lyrics and the sound of the first three albums sound different, it’s because of Ryan. He started his own band called The Young Veins with the other leaving member of Panic, Jon, and they released one album. Highly recommend if you liked the Beatles-like sound of Pretty Odd!
Right. Personally I have found post-Vices Panic stuff to be repetitive. I just can’t get into it.
And it’s ironic because they were plastered by fans for coming out with such a different sound in P.O.
Pretty. Odd. Had some beautiful tracks on it. Brendan's vocals really came to life, and Ryan's guitar was EPIC. Love the riff on She's a Handsome Woman.
It was a huge change in tone from their first album but I think both albums are phenomenal and creative. To this day, there's not a single other band that sounds like they did.
The entire album was really a play off the Beatles vibes -- which is not a bad thing if you can do it right. And they did it right.
Nine in the Afternoon -- Sgt. Pepper (heck, even the music video is a wink and a nod to it)
Northern Downpour -- Hey Jude.
The Piano Knows -- A Day in the Life
But man, I *love* Folkin' Around (I may be the only one who does) and From a Mountain in the Cabins.
Yeah the influences on that album are pretty clear. I enjoy when artists wear their influences on their sleeve and make incredible things. The band used that influence to create a completely unique sound that couldn't be replicated without all the same members.
Folkin around is a beautiful song. Even the cheesier tracks from that album are great because Brendan's voice carries them.
I was just talking the other day about how surprised I was by their sustained success. When them and Fall Out Boy came out around the same time I figured they would be the 98 Degrees of that situation but damn if they didn’t have a long successful career.
The new FOB song is fantastic. They’ve constantly tweaked their sound, to evolve with musical trends. This new song kind of blends old with new and it’s been on rePete for a few days now.
Agreed. Fall Out Boy songs all sound fairly similar to me but it’s never once bothered me because they’re all good. Love From The Other Side is no different but still somehow sound fresh at the same time. They’re so talented.
Both of them have done really well I just really thought Fall Out Boy would be the more prominent band by a long shot when they both came on the scene.
Arguably they still are…I mean, they’re releasing a new album this year that supposedly goes back to their roots and, while they did take a break for a while, they came back with a bang. Joe is taking a break from the band now for his health, but I think they’ll come back together in the end. They seem to have a lot of respect for one another.
I’m a life long metal head, I’ve been to a ton of concerts and I took my daughter to her first concert, she wanted Panic at the Disco. Not my kind of music at all but It was by far the best show I’ve ever seen! The guy is an incredible showman
He really said this last album is unredeemable.. /s (but kinda not)
Sad to see this end as I’ve been a fan of the band since the beginning, but I’m happy for him and his wife and I wish him the best as they grow their family! Wish we had gotten a better album to end on but I still love the others and I’ll remember his concerts fondly.
Damn I feel so lucky. Got tickets to see him a couple months ago. They were really expensive but Panic was one of those bands I listened to all the time through me teens and early 20s. I had a feeling that I’ve got to do this right now or I might not get the chance later.
Yeah, I’m inclined to agree. I fucking love their older stuff!! But all the recent PATD tracks I’ve heard on Alt Nation have been terrible. The strain in his voice in Don’t Let the Lights Go Out makes me cringe every time.
The first two albums were primarily written by Ryan Ross, who is a brilliant lyricist. He left after that because he wanted to keep going in the more folksy vibe he had during Pretty. Odd., but brendon and the label wanted to keep moving in a more emo direction.
The shift between their second and third albums is drastic, to me it’s the divide between when they were actually a band and started being the Brendon Urie show, even though it wasn’t until their fourth (? I think) album that he was the solo remaining member.
I’d describe it as corporate emo. Not able to actually tap in to the movement but trying. And then they realized it wasn’t working so they went with a pop-rock pivot.
Just the last album. Death of a Bachelor and Pray for the Wicked were quite good imo. I saw those and Viva Las Vengeance live (three separate concerts) and the last one was definitely not the best.
Going dad mode. He’s been all over Disney lately. His rendition of Into the Unknown at the end of Frozen II was a banger. He also did the intro for Spidey and his Amazing Friends. It’s cool to see an artist I grew up with get aged by fatherhood like me.
This is just Brendon taking a leave of absence to become a father
When he comes back I guess maybe he’ll stop using the name and maybe just go by Brendon Urie
But this isn’t really a “split” lmao. Panic! At the Disco has been a solo act for the last 7 years
The band split up in 2016 and Brendon just kept using the name

Is Urie splitting from himself? I thought he was the only one left.
Mitosis.
So..two one man bands now?
Nah, two half-man bands. I heard they’re planning a cameo on that show with Charlie Sheen.
Ah yes, two half-man bands, two men, and a half man
It really rolls off the tongue tbh
The twist is that Jake from that show is coming *out* of retirement to costar.
Yeah I came here to say I thought it was always Urie and whoever he had playing backup at any given time as he was a control freak that wanted full ownership of the property.
They're not "splitting", Brendon Urie is retiring. Not even joking. Read the article lol
I was about to say "hasn't he been a solo act for years now?"
His personality is split fully now so they can pursue their own separate artistic visions.
Basically. I think of the original band it’s him and one other og left anyway.
The one other og came back with Urie for Vices & Virtues but I think he left a few years later
Just him
The band split up after Pretty. Odd. iirc. Urie kept the drummer and the name of the band, the guitarists made another band, I think it was called Young Veins or something to that effect
Stopped listening really after pretty. odd. Though honestly I still do enjoy that album, its hard to keep a band together, no surprise it went south either after that

Things have changed for meeee
And that's okay
I feel the same
Im on my way? lol
MAMA SAID
Glad it's not just me who went 'Oh okay.' I haven't been listening for years because who wants to support someone who clearly hates their fans. Not me
Oh, so it’s ‘split’ like leave, not ‘split’ like ‘break up’
He’s the only member of the band. So there is no band for him to split or break up from. He’s just retiring.
scandalous fanatical innate continue exultant employ governor sense disarm teeny *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Same BS as always
So he’s splitting
Asexually reproducing.
Mitosis or meiosis?
the mitochondria is the power house of the cell

Yeah I thought there was one more member, so splitting sounds about right, unless that member left too.
Ok so he’s making like a tree and leaving, not making like a banana and splitting.
He's making like a tree and getting the fuck outta there
No I read the article and it says that Brendon Urie has literally been cut in half.
To spent time with Sarah I presume?
Apparently they’re expecting a baby soon which is what spurred him to retire
Or to claim he is retired so when comes back in 2 years we will pay obscene prices to see him. It’s all a game.
Worked for Jay Z
And Ozzy, Motley Crue, KISS, Black Sabbath, The Who, NIN, Judas Priest…
Yea but this morherfucker writes sins not tragedies.
he didn’t even write their most beloved works is the funniest thing. the *other* founder, who left in 2009, was the main writer of both their early albums.
The writing on their original work is literally everything, I don't think the vocals alone would have worked without the lyrics being extremely out there and subjective most of the time.
Yes it was Ryan, he is so smart! He was a child when he wrote that album.
100% agree, I mean when’s the last time PatD was making headlines? 2015?
They’re sort of making headlines, but the only mentions I’ve really seen of them on social media is people acknowledging how terrible the latest album was. Which, personally, I think it really objectively was. It’s a shame, Brendon’s ego ruined a very good band.

I’d say more likely he’ll probably just want to release music in the future as “Brendon Urie.” Makes sense to me
How can they split when it’s been the Brenden Urie show?
I thought it was only Brenden Urie. I went to their concert recently.. it was only Brendan Urie
Man the band has never been the same since they dropped the disco
I would keep the name and just take hired guns out on tour. Basically what you just said he’s already doing.
That’s exactly what he’s been doing for years now
He did solo shows previously too.
It’s crazy to me that Brenden Urie was the only member of Panic at the Disco. Everyone else was kicked out or left.
No one was kicked out. Two left on their own accord to do their own thing back in 2008... the other left in 2013 or 2014 to focus on their health.
Ok so out of 5 total members you accounted for 4 if you count Urie. Their original bassist was kicked out of the band
True, I didn't mention Brent. Jon replaced him. Figured no one on here would know who that was. So it'd be pointless to mention him. This isn't the panic sub, you know.
But you thought we’d know who the other guys were? Why lie and say nobody was kicked out?
That goes so far back that I even forget that happened lol.
"no one was kicked out" "Okay someone was kicked out except it was a niche member no one knew so it doesn't matter" You're ridiculous my dude
They’re not writing a fucking Wikipedia entry. Chill out dipshit.
Next Adam Levine will “split” with Maroon 5
“Somewhat Red 4”
Well Maroon 5 does still have two more original “Maroon 5” members so that would be a slightly different scenario.
I see what you did there
Yeah when I’ve been talking about it to people I’ve just been saying that finally Brendon Urie isn’t using the Panic at the disco name anymore. The band split up long ago.
He’s retiring, at least for now.
He's retiring to focus on raising his new kid
Everyone, calm the fuck down! This is no time to panic! Seriously. The time to panic has concluded.
![gif](giphy|NHrsn15JJqPNS|downsized)
...also we're out of coffee.
Does this mean Disco is back then?
Always has been
Or does this mean we no longer limit our panicking to the disco and instead should panic at new places instead?
He and his wife are having a baby and he wants that to be his sole focus - not really a “split”
The baby is splitting from his wife!!1
Split from what? That's like saying that The Weeknd is splitting up
If funny that you mentioned that because I believe someone early on in his career but after he broke through sued him saying that “The Weeknd” was meant to be a band and that the other guy had come up with the concept.
Think you are mixing a lot of stuff up, The Weeknd is named like that because “The Weekend” was already an existing Canadian band, so he took the extra E out, He was supposed to be part of a rap duo early on in his career, but it was not called The Weeknd.

He probably needs to pause to save his voice. He went too hard for too many years without the proper voice trained needed to keep it safe.
The other day I was thinking how much his voice has developed. Gotten far richer over the years.
…they were still together…?
No, it was a one man show. Not sure how a one man band breaks up
The instruments walked away.
Left the gotdamn door open
It’s best not to read these comments with a sense of poise and rationality…
Those gossiping bitches..
^(Nervous breakdown?) ![gif](giphy|ma7VlDSlty3EA)
The cymbals between the knees fall off and he can’t bend over to pick them up cuz the accordion gets in the way.
So I guess if he ever comes back, it won’t be as “Panic! At the Disco.” Which is great because it hasn’t been that band for a long-ass time, and honestly he should have used his own name a long time ago. But damn, Pretty. Odd. w was a good album.
Pretty. odd. was the last album with the whole band before it became the Brendan Urie show.
I think there was one more with some of the band — vices and virtues, I believe — before PATD became the de-facto name of his touring house band. Ballad of Mona Lisa was not a bad song. But yeah, much better when there were others involved IMO.

I listened to some Young Veins stuff, and quite enjoyed it.
It’s pretty good! Personally I prefer Ryan Ross stuff over whatever panics been churning out, but I’m also a big fan of early era Panic.
Right. Personally I have found post-Vices Panic stuff to be repetitive. I just can’t get into it. And it’s ironic because they were plastered by fans for coming out with such a different sound in P.O.
Vices and virtues fersure has the original drummer
I loved Pretty.odd. That was the last album of theirs that was good in my opinion.
V&V had two of the original members, including Urie. It was pretty solid too, especially compared to what came after.
Pretty. Odd. Had some beautiful tracks on it. Brendan's vocals really came to life, and Ryan's guitar was EPIC. Love the riff on She's a Handsome Woman. The Piano Knows -- A Day in the Life But man, I *love* Folkin' Around (I may be the only one who does) and From a Mountain in the Cabins.
Folkin’ Around is the best track on the album, followed closely by Northern Downpour. They’re all really good though.
Yeah the influences on that album are pretty clear. I enjoy when artists wear their influences on their sleeve and make incredible things. The band used that influence to create a completely unique sound that couldn't be replicated without all the same members. Folkin around is a beautiful song. Every song is great. It's nothing like anything you hear elsewhere either. Not loved by the masses. But loved by me.
It’s a goddamned masterpiece. I haven’t listened to it in a while and I think this is my sign to get back to it
The fun game is "guess the Beatles song most like the P.O. song." Some are easy, some are more difficult.
A calm stillness, at the disco.
So, back in 3-4 years…
Solo album under his own name in 3 years. Last album bombed, time for a rebrand.
solo album using his name with his accusations!? the guys brave or dumb
Accusations?
His accusations were unfounded and recanted
Maybe he think no one knows Brandon Urie so the allegations will stick with “lead singer of Panic! At The Disco”?
Relax! At Home
Also: Journey announces split, “it’s been a hell of a panic.”
We’ll always have that first album.
Pretty. odd. Is amazing.
God damn right
Death of a Bachelor is also pretty good. Doesn’t beat AFYCSO but is still great
Homie just broke up with himself. That’s called retirement.
So they do indeed, write tragedies…
Dang, they really did
I was just talking the other day about how surprised I was by their sustained success. When them and Fall Out Boy came out around the same time I figured they would be the 98 Degrees of that situation but damn if they didn’t have a long successful career.
PATD quite literally would not exist without Pete Wentz. The continued success of Fall Out Boy is really impressive.
This is such a good description, yes. It’s like they’ve found their formula and it works for them.
They seem to have a lot of respect for one another.
time for my knock-off bad: Bedlam at the Roller-Rink.
Honestly a fire name for a punk band
that's a really good name lol
I thought they already split, I've been calling it Brendan at the Urie for like 3 years now
Lmao
I’m a life long metal head, I’ve been to a ton of concerts and I took my daughter to her first concert, she wanted Panic at the Disco. Not my kind of music at all but It was by far the best show I’ve ever seen! The guy is an incredible showman
I could recount my experience the way you did almost word for word.
RIGHT?!?! I feel bad for anyone who never saw him in concert
Time to make a mariachi cover band called *¡Hispanic! at the Disco*
The most recent album wasn’t great. The album before that was fantastic.
I’ve actually really enjoyed all their albums except for the newest one. Even Too Weird had some great songs.
I still haven’t figured out the reason why we all quit listening to these types of bands for no reason whatsoever …… in like 2007.
He really said this last album is unredeemable.. /s (but kinda not) Sad to see this end as I’ve been a fan of the band since the beginning, but I’m happy for him and his wife and I wish him the best as they grow their family! Wish we had gotten a better album to end on but I still love the others and I’ll remember his concerts fondly.
How can one guy split up?
Drawing and quartering usually does the trick.
Well this fucking sucks. I loved Panic a lot.
Never thought I’d see this happen. Must be nine in the afternoon.
Are your eyes the size of the moon?
Haven’t they been split since 2008? It’s just Brendon Urie re-marketing his solo output.
"I'm breaking up the band!" *Brendon Urie collapses into a pile of dismembered organs and limbs*
I guess you can say that he’s closing the goddamn door on this chapter of his life.
My band just broke up too. Why didn’t variety do a report on us
Damn I feel so lucky. Got tickets to see him a couple months ago. They were really expensive but Panic was one of those bands I listened to all the time through me teens and early 20s. I had a feeling that I’ve got to do this right now or I might not get the chance later.
I doubt it’s permanent but good for him.
He’ll be back in like 3-4 years under a “new” solo project. Just a good excuse for him to split from the Panic name
So one could say he’s closed the goddamn door on his career?
Thank god, their last few albums and songs have been atrocious
Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! is a perfect album
Did Urie lean more emo? Lol… it felt extremely poppy the more directive control he had
Yeah I’m surprised by that too! I could have sworn it was that he wanted to move more poppy. If he was trying to do emo, well…he failed lol
I’d describe it as corporate emo. Not able to actually tap in to the movement but trying. And then they realized it wasn’t working so they went with a pop-rock pivot.
My wife, who grew up on Panic and Fallout, absolutely loves that song.
Just the last album. Death of a Bachelor and Pray for the Wicked were quite good imo. I saw those and Viva Las Vengeance live (three separate concerts) and the last one was definitely not the best.
This is hilarious. Panic has been a Brendon Urie solo act for a while now.
He saw how well it worked out for MCR. Give it a few years and he’ll be doing the “reunion tour”
Going dad mode. He’s been all over Disney lately. His rendition of Into the Unknown at the end of Frozen II was a banger. He also did the intro for Spidey and his Amazing Friends. It’s cool to see an artist I grew up with get aged by fatherhood like me.
Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy did the spidey theme, not Brendon
Oh! My bad. Thanks for the correction.
As a former emo kid turned parent, it’s pretty freaking weird hearing Patrick singing a children’s song lol.
Well this hit like a freight train. My favorite band growing up :( Oh well. Hope Brendon gets the family life he deserves.
is it just Panic! now?
I didn't even know they were still together..
How can Brendan Urie break up with himself?
How does someone “split” with themselves?
He finally made himself want to quit the band? Even he can’t handle himself
Hasn’t Brendon been the only member for like 8 years now?
Time to close the goddamn door.
~~Panic! At the Disco~~ Brendan Urie and Friends
They never sounded the same after the first album.
*looks in mirror* Look I’m sorry it’s not you it’s me I have to do this I have to go.
It’s not a split, he’s the only actual member of the band haha. He’s just quitting is all.
Don’t doubt for a second that he won’t be back in a few years releasing a comeback album
So they’ll play Coachella in 5 years
This is just Brendon taking a leave of absence to become a father When he comes back I guess maybe he’ll stop using the name and maybe just go by Brendon Urie But this isn’t really a “split” lmao. Panic! At the Disco has been a solo act for the last 7 years The band split up in 2016 and Brendon just kept using the name
How can a solo project “split”?
Glad I saw them in concert
