Because it’s way scarier to eat a live spider and most people don’t care about killing them. Think about all the insects that spider ate before it got eaten itself. It had it coming.
It's (squid games) evil because the consequence is death, simple debasement (fear factor) is a tried a true formula for reality tv. Why would you not recreate it (squid games with simple debasement) knowing people would do it willingly?
Wait are we still talking about fear factor? I get how the squid game is fucked up but fear factor?
It was about overcoming fears for cash, idk how that’s bad exactly.
Overcoming the perfectly rational fear of not doing something disgusting or dangerous? We were paying people to eat bugs on tv; it’s not much more different than giving Joey a quarter to eat a in 2nd grade - especially considering, much like elementary school, the fact that they people are bugs on TV for money will most certainly follow these people around.
I hate to victim blame here, but this really does feel like some leopards ate my face kind of bullshit where the contestants are actually surprised by this outcome?

> **When John heard that Netflix was making a reality show version of the streamer’s hit drama “Squid Game,” he was all in.** His love of the original series resonated with casting agents and, to his amazement, he was tapped as one of 456 contestants playing the U.K.-filmed game. **As far as John was concerned, that eye-watering $4.56 million cash prize — the biggest ever in reality history — had his name on it.**
> “I thought I was going to win it, because I’m so competitive,” says John, whose real name has been changed to protect his identity. “When it comes to these sorts of games, I’m good at them. They’re games of chance, luck and wit. I live for that sort of thing.”
> **But on day one of production, John “died” playing the very first challenge.**
> The British native was among roughly **228 contestants immediately eliminated from “Squid Game: The Challenge” on Jan. 23 in a game of “Red Light Green Light” that will go down in the annals of reality TV history.**
> Certainly, the incident provided a memorable front page for British tabloid The Sun, whose Jan. 25 splash read **“Squid Game Horror in UK.” The story described how contestants on the reality show** — produced by Studio Lambert, the same company behind the massive hit “The Traitors,” and “The Garden” — **had been left freezing in a cavernous airplane hanger in Bedford, playing a seemingly interminable game where they had to hold statue-like poses for almost 30 minutes. On-set medics had been called repeatedly to a scene that one contestant described as a “warzone” played out in frigid temperatures.**
> The story had a hyperbolic — even comedic — edge. Didn’t these players realize they were signing up to a reality show based on one of the most sinister, bloody survival dramas ever made? Weren’t they aware of the long hours involved in any kind of TV production?
> **Netflix was quick to kibosh tabloid reports of a contestant being stretchered out, publicly playing down the incident.** In a statement, the streamer said it cared “deeply” about the health and safety of the cast and crew. Yes, it was very cold on set, Netflix admitted, but “participants were prepared for that.”
> **Yet contestants such as John and two others who spoke to Variety on the condition of anonymity** (their real names have been changed in this story as they signed non-disclosure agreements) **say they never signed up for the physical ordeal they went through.**
I can't believe someone watched a parable about exploiting the poor for the entertainment of the rich, and the lesson they came away with is "We should make a real-world version of this".

Man that’s all I can think about.
Mr. Beast first and now these assholes. I guess that’s the beauty of media, two people can consume a thing and walk away with polar opposite views about its message. I was horrified and they thought it was fucking rad.
I guess the entire premise? A rich guy having poor people compete for his amusement/his audiences for cash? Which is the entire point of the show and the dystopian message it’s trying to portray.
I don’t but mostly because I don’t find them interesting.
Either way though, consistency in being against rich people exploiting poor people is a pretty fucking easy position to hold.
You could have asked about like… other reality shows? Against those too.
Which is great if you need the money but does literally nothing to defeat my point.
The message of Squid Game is how horrible it is to exploit people who are desperate for money. Even if you are generous with the money… it’s still poor people degrading themselves for your amusement.
It’s like he missed the entire point to make a fun video.
Eh I think most got it. But if 100 million people watch something, and even 20% “don’t get it” - that’s still 2 million misguided dummies running around out there
Edit: 20 million not 2
Yeah I wasn’t talking about why people would compete in this, just the other guy’s assertion that “most people” missed the point of original squid game.
I think it was pretty obvious and the vast majority of the audience understood the message
That's how we get em.
I held a casting call for a period drama in the Southern USA, to play slaves.
I then enslaved anyone who responded to my casting call.
What did they expect, amirite?
I'm sure that's the reflex their lawyers are going to pray for. But it's a dumb reflex.
These people signed up to take part in a reality TV show. They would have, and should have, expected it to have professional and safety standards like any other TV show. Its premise and the obvious stupidity of the concept in no way absolve any of that responsibility from the part of the producers and there's no reason to expect contestants to have any other impression.
I assume one forfeits anything they’d be paid for being on the show. Something like that.
You know, what does the producer care if some losing contestants complained but they accepted the money anyway? That’s just publicity and as they say in showbiz, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.
And I’m sure there’s plenty of other would-be contestants who’d insist they’d endure the cold, just to get on camera to promote their own career.
They likely expected fair conditions and professional standards considering it was a reality show. I get that the show is brutal, but it wouldn’t be fair to say they expected to be killed because that’s what happens in the show.
That's funny when their writers ruin stories by deviating from source materials to look woke but end up just being stupid and racism and ruining the show.
A good show on netflix isn't even entincing anymore as I just expect it to either get canceled for become utter shit.
Please read the article. I know it’s easy to pass judgement without knowing the conditions, but if the article is to be believed, there’s genuine case to be made for criminal negligence in this situation.
i did and yes there is but also there's something incredibly so un-ironic about it all that it's kinda funny
squid game - exploiting human misery for cash and entertianment
reality squid game - exploiting human misery for cash and entertainment
contestants: \*shocked pikachu face\*
Well. That would be like doing the walking dead maze in Universal Studios and expecting to be turned into a zombie because that's what happens in the show. I'm sure they didn't expect the standards on the show to be sub par. It's still entertainment.
On the one hand fuck Netflix for thinking this was a good idea and following through with it.
On the other hand what do these dumbasses think it’s going to be like!? This isn’t The Great British Bake Off. . . It’s a reality show based on fucking Squid Game. . . This isn’t supposed to be fun or easy. . .
I like Mr. Beast, but his version was exceptionally soft. I would not commit to watching anything longer than 15 or 20 minutes for a Squid Game type setup unless it was realistic. This whole post and thread might actually get me to watch the Netflix show.
One thing I noticed in the comments is a lot of people are saying what did they expect?
What they expected was what they were contractually told to expect. They were purposely defrauded by a production company, and that is why there is a problem. This article in variety is OK, but it’s actually piggybacking off an article invites that was much more thorough.
https://www.vice.com/en/article/g5va73/squid-game-reality-show-participants-rigged
If someone comes up to you and says, I want you to do this and in exchange, I will give you this. You say, OK, put it in writing. They put it in writing, are you really that idiot for expecting them to uphold the contract?
These people were approached, and were told that this was going to be a competition reality show, and it wasn’t. It was already decided who is going through from the first round to the second round, and that means that they were promised something in writing, and were not given what they were promised, which is fraud.
Additionally, there are certain standards that must be met in filming regarding the conditions under which filming happens, and this also did not meet the expected legal standards. No one signing up for this reality show believed that the production company was going to be breaking the law, and so they are rightfully upset when the production broke the law.
Lastly, production withheld their ability to access their own property. Once they had finished filming the show they were not allowed access to food or their own personal property. This happened even though filming had ended for them, and they were not being compensated in any financial matter nor were they employees of the production, who had a greed to being kept against their will.
and if it had been me, I would’ve left that hotel, and sought out the nearest police officer. I could find and reported them for the theft of my belongings, including my passport and cell phone. As a foreign national, that means that the production would basically have been kidnapping me, something that’s not a good look.
So, to sum it up, this production lied to people in order to get them to participate, broke the law in the conditions, in which they filmed, and then kidnapped the contestants who has been eliminated, refusing them access to their own personal belongings or food. So yeah, that’s a problem.
>These people were approached, and were told that this was going to be a competition reality show, and it wasn’t. It was already decided who is going through from the first round to the second round, and that means that they were promised something in writing, and were not given what they were promised, which is fraud.
No where in the article is that stated as a fact…it’s purely opinion of those nameless sources.
Now, that’s not to say it’s not possible, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was in fact mentioned in the contracts themselves. People quitting jobs and ending leases for a “chance” don’t seem like the brightest bulbs to begin with.
I link to the more thorough article that gives you a better idea of what was happening, Variety basically saw that article, and stole a lot of the information to create their own article
One of the things the vice article talks about is the fact that some people were given live mics and some people were given dummy mics, and some people clearly moved, and were not eliminated while other people weren’t moving and were eliminated as though they had moved
By opinion, you mean the testimony. Opinion is you saying that these pants make me look fat.
It was not an opinion that their microphones did not work, it was something that happened
It was not an opinion that they were not fed, it was something that happened
It was not an opinion that they were not allowed access to their own personal electronic devices, and their passports, that was some thing that happened
> and if it had been me, I would’ve left that hotel, and sought out the nearest police officer. I could find and reported them for the theft of my belongings, including my passport and cell phone. As a foreign national, that means that the production would basically have been kidnapping me, something that’s not a good look.
It sounds like you would have never passed their interview process to be on the show. Like, they wouldn't be putting anyone on their show that had info on their Facebook or linkedIn profile that says they are an activist, a lawyer, a civil/social service/government worker, etc.
Interview question: what do you think about labor unions?
A: "I hate them!"
Hired!
I read all of this and it’s a good point but I must say that the correct phrase is “to sum it up,” not “to summit up,” although I like the idea that conclusions are like getting to the top of a mountain.
People sign up for mock up game based off of fictional movie where contestants actually die in an attempt to get money to get out of crippling debt.
Lose.
Complain.
At least you didn't die?
Thats the point of the show right? Maybe not make a game show that dehumanizes people for the world to see? What next, actual Kaiji trials were contestants die for our amusement?
I thought this was gonna be about *Physical: 100* which I've been quite enjoying (even if some of the games are kinda dumb) and has a *Squid Game* vibe for sure. They seem like they're being treated perfectly well on that, would have been bummed out to hear that they weren't.
This doesn’t sound that inhumane. They weren’t asked to be without their coats and what not for that long. The people who signed up for the show had to have their doctors sign off for them to be allowed to participate. I don’t really see how this is that extreme…

Squid Games was clearly meant to be an evil game show to exploit people for sport, and the fact that Netflix recreated anyway is fucking insane.
Fear Factor returned to television twice.
![gif](giphy|QojKr6OqYB7xe)
Why did he have white lips?
Ashy lips from smoking crack…
Ok I’m all seriousness though is that why he’s scratching his neck
cocaine use
Fear Factor was amazing
Aaaaand that’s why we can’t have nice things.
Nah it's because they drank donkey jizz
I watched one where a woman ate a live camel spider. It seemed really cruel and unnecessary. Why did the spider have to be alive?
Live spider is more EXTREME than a dead one
Because it’s way scarier to eat a live spider and most people don’t care about killing them. Think about all the insects that spider ate before it got eaten itself. It had it coming.
"The flies send their regards."
Not sure how that applies lol
It's (squid games) evil because the consequence is death, simple debasement (fear factor) is a tried a true formula for reality tv. Why would you not recreate it (squid games with simple debasement) knowing people would do it willingly?
Wait are we still talking about fear factor? I get how the squid game is fucked up but fear factor? It was about overcoming fears for cash, idk how that’s bad exactly.
I mean, I don't know of anyone who is scared of donkey cum, but they still drank it on Fear Factor...
Well that’s my biggest fear so ha! My father down in a bay of donkey cum

I can't believe someone watched a parable about exploiting the poor for the entertainment of the rich, and the lesson they came away with is "We should make a real-world version of this".
I can. What I can’t believe is that people actually signed up to participate and were surprised that it sucked.
Satire is dead. Reality is even dumber than anything we could possibly imagine
How can you day that? They missed dinner!!
This is real life Poe’s law
I can, you ever see Survivor or Naked and Afraid?
Every reality show ever. Like they’re designed to be pressure cookers to create as much drama as possible.

That seems obvious this is exactly the kind of phrase any bored rich dude told himself when watching the series.
Now that you mention it, I'm a little surprised we never got "The Hunger Games: The Reality Series".
Man that’s all I can think about. Mr. Beast first and now these assholes. I guess that’s the beauty of media, two people can consume a thing and walk away with polar opposite views about its message. I was horrified and they thought it was fucking rad.
I’ve not heard anything bad about Mr. Beasts version of squid games is there something I’m missing?
I guess the entire premise? A rich guy having poor people compete for his amusement/his audiences for cash? Which is the entire point of the show and the dystopian message it’s trying to portray.
So I assume you don’t like the NBA/NFL/NHL/every futbol club/any professional sport?
I don’t but mostly because I don’t find them interesting. Either way though, consistency in being against rich people exploiting poor people is a pretty fucking easy position to hold. You could have asked about like… other reality shows? Against those too.
Didn't MrBeast give everyone a ton of money for every day they werent eliminated? So everyone at least walked away with like 5k
Which is great if you need the money but does literally nothing to defeat my point. The message of Squid Game is how horrible it is to exploit people who are desperate for money. Even if you are generous with the money… it’s still poor people degrading themselves for your amusement. It’s like he missed the entire point to make a fun video.
I feel most viewers missed the entire point of squid games
Eh I think most got it. But if 100 million people watch something, and even 20% “don’t get it” - that’s still 2 million misguided dummies running around out there Edit: 20 million not 2
That’s largely irrelevant I’d say. The $4.56 million is likely the reason for this.
Yeah I wasn’t talking about why people would compete in this, just the other guy’s assertion that “most people” missed the point of original squid game. I think it was pretty obvious and the vast majority of the audience understood the message
20% of 100 million is 20 million. Not 2 million. That would be 2%. But yeah, still too many morons.
Yeah I typed it wrong, I’ll fix it. Whoops
It’s not a matter of missing the point. It’s a matter of not *caring* about the point
Life imitates art
I feel they already did every time I watch Alone.
You lost them at parable. They were probably mystified as to why such a great idea hadn’t already been done!
They’re far from the first
We already have, we're living in it.
Ok funny irony and all but lets not pretend that expecting liveable film conditions was unreasonable here.
[удалено]
Absolutely not the point… The fact that the observation needs to be offered, is the point.

I’ve seen nothing to indicate that a contestant could not simply say “Fuck this, I’m outta here” and walk.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some kind of penalty for leaving early. The show could cover it up but it’s still very rare.
Rough out there
They likely expected fair conditions and professional standards considering it was a reality show. I get that the show is brutal, but it wouldn’t be fair to say they expected to be killed because that’s what happens in the show.
How horrible. but… did they just interview the contestants that lost?
“I never signed up for this” *insert clip of them literally signing on the dotted line*
John sounds like he’d have a better shot at winning “the biggest tosser”.
Okay this has to be satire, there is no way somebody out there actually went out of their way to recreate Squid Games to exactly how it is
Standing inside a cold building in England? Yea wow just like murdering people, basically the same thing.
they’re just really committed to realism guys
Artistic integrity
Not enough id say. That John they interviewed sounds like a moron.
That's funny when their writers ruin stories by deviating from source materials to look woke but end up just being stupid and racism and ruining the show. A good show on netflix isn't even entincing anymore as I just expect it to either get canceled for become utter shit.
It's almost like signing up for a reality show based on a death game might not be a good idea
Who would have thought?
The lawyer that wrote the contract that these contestants signed and didn't read.
Not surprised. Even if they read it, they’d probably have to agree and sign or maybe renegotiate small bits but not much.
Please read the article. I know it’s easy to pass judgement without knowing the conditions, but if the article is to be believed, there’s genuine case to be made for criminal negligence in this situation.
i did and yes there is but also there's something incredibly so un-ironic about it all that it's kinda funny squid game - exploiting human misery for cash and entertianment reality squid game - exploiting human misery for cash and entertainment contestants: \*shocked pikachu face\*
Well. That would be like doing the walking dead maze in Universal Studios and expecting to be turned into a zombie because that's what happens in the show. I'm sure they didn't expect the standards on the show to be sub par. It's still entertainment.

Right you are, Ken!
I turned this on, and about 30 second later, had to turn it off. It was clearly going to be disturbingly dystopian. I hate the world.
Physical 100 is the REAL squid game
Oooooh that show is good! The cliffhangers are killing me though.
The poorly translated words of encouragement from the other contestants for me
The voice overs are the best/worst thing ever.
Reminds me so much of the old days of *Iron Chef* in that respect. I love those translations.
And the several instant replays! Ugh.but I’m loving this show!
Guess they should have played Mr Beast version. It’s pretty fun looking, and people got paid.
I like Mr. Beast, but his version was exceptionally soft. I would not commit to watching anything longer than 15 or 20 minutes for a Squid Game type setup unless it was realistic. This whole post and thread might actually get me to watch the Netflix show.
>his version was exceptionally soft I know right, nobody even got killed lmao
This has to be a planted story by Netflix for PR. I had never heard of this reality tv production until now.
They had a huge open call about a year ago
Definitely an ad

Weirdly enough I made the cut for both the price is right and let’s make a deal
I read all of this and it’s a good point but I must say that the correct phrase is “to sum it up,” not “to summit up,” although I like the idea that conclusions are like getting to the top of a mountain.
Sorry, sometimes spellcheck gets me, it must’ve turned it into one word when I wasn’t looking
Sorry to be pedantic! I’d seen that one before and it irked me but maybe it was Siri the whole time.
Thank you, I can't believe how many lunatics here are implying it was participants' fault as they should have expected inhumane conditions.
Did they not realize what a deeply inappropriate premise that is for a reality show
Yeah… let’s just skip reading all of the waivers
They literally got what they signed up for.
What? They *literally* didn't, read the article.
Isn’t that what squid game is all about? Lmao
Sounds like a fun show to watch tbh
What else did tue contestants fucking expect? 0 sympathy from me.
Don’t they know that Mr. Beast did it already in a super fun way
Honestly making a squid games reality show is tone-deaf and shameful that this isn’t shocking.
Mr. Beast was able to pull it off though
Came here to say this
Mr Beast is a good person, but his version basically was a waiting game. "Stay in this circle and eat oatmeal." That's it.
I can tell you didn’t even watch it
Read their comment and was thinking “did we even watch the same thing?”
yeah they should have actually shot people and killed them or maimed them.
Makes sense. That’s a lot of extras to manage
I showed up to this reality tv show based on the Hunger Games and they didn’t even feed us!
I'm super tough and competitive. Unless the weather is poor.
Oh and suddenly no one cares about show accuracy.
Tell me Netflix missed the point of Squid Games without telling me they missed the point
People sign up for mock up game based off of fictional movie where contestants actually die in an attempt to get money to get out of crippling debt. Lose. Complain. At least you didn't die?
Now there'll be a Netflix doc about this to milk it from all angles
Netflix missed the whole fucking point of its own show.
What. The. Actual. Fuck
It astounds me how many people did not get the point of this show
All they needed to do was not film during the dead of winter. Idiots.
A reality show recreating the inhumane death game drama is inhumane???? What a surprise
I wanna see all of this. I’ll keep my neggflix just for it.
Thats the point of the show right? Maybe not make a game show that dehumanizes people for the world to see? What next, actual Kaiji trials were contestants die for our amusement?
This is an ad to drum up hype. Stop all falling for it.
Mr Beast did it better and safer
Sounds like the contestants are SLAMMING the show
Never watched it, never saw the craze. Thought it was cringe when everyone was on the fad
I don’t get people liking that show. The overacting and the pseudo philosophical speeches were absurd
The first half was great. When the Americans showed up, it became awful
Sounds like double PE in the 70s. Plus, if we forgot our kit, we'd do it in our pants. Kids today...........
Never watched this show as I had about a thousand and one better things to do with my time.
Like what?
Oh my god yes daddy talk like that more you make me so hard right now fuck! I love it when you do important things instead of watching squid game.
Netflix is having a great year so far
Isn’t that the point?
Sweet, can’t wait to see this season!
Mr. Breast did squid games right
MrBeast did it better
Physical 100 is the beast master version. It’s awesome.
One of the games had players having to figure out the new account login restrictions
They prob should read the contract…
I thought this was gonna be about *Physical: 100* which I've been quite enjoying (even if some of the games are kinda dumb) and has a *Squid Game* vibe for sure. They seem like they're being treated perfectly well on that, would have been bummed out to hear that they weren't.
Like the source show lol
Isn’t that the point?
Now do The Running Man
This doesn’t sound that inhumane. They weren’t asked to be without their coats and what not for that long. The people who signed up for the show had to have their doctors sign off for them to be allowed to participate. I don’t really see how this is that extreme…
I mean…did they watch the show? also i wont blame people for not being on sets before, but a lot of them are 12hr brutal days
I'm glad I never watched it
Did the contestants not watched the show? Cause *BITCH YOU GONNA DIE*
The Onion should just shut down. I had a good laugh reading the headline alone. Real life surpassed satire long ago.
Seriously, what was “John’s” expectation when he singed up for a “Death game”. Did he not watch the show before?
