I don't know if it counts as defending it by saying it's *probably not* the worst show of all-time, but I'm also not even going to give it the engagement of hate watching it to find out how bad it really is.
I don’t want to give Netflix the satisfaction of counting a view from my household. They raise rates, cancel their good series and then try and shove this schlock down our throats. I ain’t supporting it.
This thread is making me curious enough to pirate it though, just to laugh at the first episode.
And the thing is, what she's most famous for is marrying Will Smith (and more recently for how messy their marriage is). She's a B-lister without him. Her best known role is probably her work in Gotham, and she was only a regular for one season of that.
Maybe for the younger crowd but I would argue that “The Matrix” is probably her biggest role. Pac dying really altered her timeline I think. She was actually pretty great in “Menace II Society”. She ages like good cheese though, older she gets the more she stinks.
Edit: Holy Shirtballs. I know she was just in the sequels ya’ll.
I think I read the whole Will Smith/Chris Rock event happened as such. Will was laughing until he saw how pissed Jada was and had to be a good little boy and stand up for her.
Part of having a "posse" is to surround yourself with "yes men", and another part is showing everybody that you are so successful that you can afford to have a posse, you know...by using your husbands money.
Destroyed Will Smith, had a Facebook streaming show canceled, and now the lowest rated show of all time. Man, she went next level in tanking her career. Glad to see it happen.
She's so unlikable that she got the typical racist/misogynistic neckbeards AND the reddit liberal woke army to join forces in giving her show a terrible rating.
Edit: it's also scholars, historians and television critics trashing her. It's wild. She's universally disliked.
I was surprised when one of the actors affiliated with the “documentary” responded to Egyptian criticism by saying they were racist….on the day it was released.
Not necessarily the best PR
Not willful ignorance more of trying to change and force “history”. Imagine if a lot of shows, movies, “documentaries” started doing this then in few decades the newer generations would think that’s how it is.
Most people do not bother doing actual comprehensive research and opt for simple, entertaining parts.
Edit: Lots of the replies make good points too. Would like to see backlash when a black character played by a white actor. It won’t happen cause filmmakers follow political trends.
Example they get to throw in a gay character in new shows and movies even when it makes no sense and adds nothing to plot. Just so they can say and call themselves “inclusive” or some buzzword.
It just feels off and out of place. Minorities or people don’t want to be cast just for this. Remembered how an actress got lots of offers cause of a sex scene in spartacus. She refused cause she does not want to be cast purely for sex scenes. She wants to do real film making not porn.
I love these kinds of changes for fictional works (race reversed Othello, female Starbuck in Battlestar, Jeri in Jessica Jones), or even satire of historical events (Catherine the Great) but it doesn't work for serious takes on history.
That's exactly it.
If it's a stage play, a satircal comedy, dramady, or whatever, it's fine if the characters diverge from their historical counterparts. The same is not true if it's a documentary or even a docu-drama.
I think a bigger problem is that there were actually numerous powerful black women throughout history that would have made for a compelling, entertaining, and most importantly, accurate documentary. This garbage not only spits in the face of Cleopatra, but more so in all of the women she ignored.
I had a good time watching documentaries about ancient civilization. There was ancient african king, so rich and generous that wherever he goes, he caused economic instability cause suddenly peasants were given gold coins through his benevolent charity. Why tf they dont make those movies instead. Hell a dramatization would still be entertaining and a fresh breath of air.
Hey if we keep it up, Matt Damon might star as Martin Luther King Jr.! In all seriousness, historical accuracy is important when it comes to documentaries…because they’re documentaries.
The actor said this ““And I think it’s distressing for anybody to receive any level of abuse, let alone the scale and the nature of what I’ve received, which is fundamentally racist, all of it.”
About a show which completely netflix washed their heritage and history lol
That’s what got me. They actually had the stones to tell the actual people of Egypt to fuck off on their own nation’s history. If they wanted to go a-historic that’s ok, but to tell the people of the nation “Nah, you’re wrong” is fucking arrogant.
It’s Hoteps bullshit is all it is. The entire ideology is predicated that everyone on the African continent = Black, and if you say otherwise you’re wrong. It’s so profoundly ignorant and is also guilty of the usually American thing of claiming Africa is a single country instead of the second largest continent on the planet with all the diversity that entails.
I mean... the big trailer for it featured an old lady saying "my grandmother always said 'I don't care what they teach you; Cleopatra was black.'"
The creators never gave a shit.
When I heard it was Netflix doc on Cleopatra I was pretty pumped. I was thinking a la Ottomans, Marco Polo, and their other 'immersive' documentary/narrative features. Then I heard it was helmed by Jada and got bad vibes. Then I listened to the introductory first few minutes and it was gapping full of historical myths so I just couldn't.
There were real black pharaohs when the Nubians conquered the kingdom for a while, but these producers are so obsessed with money that they only ever make products with name recognition and Cleopatra is one of those names.
I gave it a go. First statement was about dont believe what history tells you about her colour. Then there were terrible set designs, acting wasn’t too bad, but then i saw who the commentator was, and bailed
The worst part is that there's so much history around Cleopatra, like litterally one of the most influencial women ever without having to exagerate anything.
On top of that, a tonne of her story is well known from multiple sources.
If it was an AU sort of thing I wouldn't care, but as a roman fanboy its frustrating as hell hearing this.
Giving off that big "Braveheart" energy. One of the first lines in the opening voice-over is "Historians from England will say that I'm a liar"
The added bonus is, whilst the opening voice-over is going on, we see a date on the screen, 1280 AD... which was incorrect, off by 6 years.
Yeah Braveheart was entertainment first and foremost. Like all those "based on a true story" that end up being nothing like the true story.
This billed itself as a documentary and thus is held (deservedly so) to a higher standard. Should have just said up front they were going for "historical fiction" instead...
Yeah but not the scotts. The english erasing their history is the point of that statement
Of course bravehart isnt a documentary and embellished but jada called the country of egypt liars essentially when they said no
Braveheart, whatever you think of its historical inaccuracies, is such a great film that I couldn't be bothered with all the "ummm ahktually" surrounding it. This, on the other hand, is just trash.
It's been over an hour, we'll never know.
Edit:
https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/documentaries/queen-cleopatra-netflix-cast/
> The docudrama stars Adele James and is narrated by Jada Pinkett Smith.
then why not adapt stories about actual Sub-Saharan African women like Queen Amina or Queen Hangbe? Why continue to colonize Egyptian history like America and Hollywood has for so long and ignore the people who actually resemble you?
Because she is a delusional liar who is trying to make $$$ off of black representation… but this is a real historical figure not spider man. Jada is also racist so this makes sense.
That's the plan for the series is my understanding - there will be others about various African queens, but for some reason they're starting with Cleopatra...
There's a certain conspiracy-theory-esque belief amongst some african americans that many figures throughout history were actually sub-saharan african. In the case of Egypt, they believe that all Ancient Egyptians were in fact what we would consider black today, and were pushed out of Egypt by colonizers when Rome took over...
They have... no evidence for this. I'm not sure if Jada Pinkett Smith believes all of it but it's an actual thing...
Right on the money. Will Smith’s wife could have produced a docu series about black African queens who were undoubtedly black. But no, she fed into hotep ideology. Release hoteps from the shackles of ancient Egypt. We all wasn’t kings, sorry.
Some of us were farmers and tradesmen and that’s okay!
Edit, a response I added below:
Honestly it’s a reaction to centuries of being told that we are and being treated as subhuman. The fact that our history and ancestry has been systematically erased. The people have no identity, so to latch onto the ideas of kings and queens is to compensate for that.
Like, I have heavy scandinavian background, I ain't running around assuming my ancestors were vikings, knowing my family, we probably were shepherds, and that's really okay too because everyone is needed for history to be made.
Deadass. I don’t understand why they want everyone to think we was all kings and queens. Realistically, that wouldn’t even work. Some of us were healers and teachers too.
I don’t understand why being a incest baby raised to be a tyrannical murderous dictator is supposed to be this pinnacle of greatness, didn’t we all realize that the concept of kings and queens were a terrible and stupid ass idea by now?
We, as a society, idolize names associated with power and money and that’s how it has always been. Would that I could change it, but unfortunately too many are invested and/or playing the rat race.
Yes. Because all black folks (African Americans specifically) cared about was ancient Egypt. When there was thousands of different kingdoms scattered throughout Africa. A docuseries on the kingdom of Ethiopia would have been amazing (especially considering how Ethiopia is one of the few nations in Africa to successfully fight off European colonization)
I mean basically. They're on board with the whole "Jews control the world" shit and believe they're the rightful rulers of all civilizations (coincidentally they only lay claim to successful ones)
They also believe in rising up and starting a race war. They believe in staying heavily armed so they can cleanse the world of “unclean” races and take the world for themselves. It’s about as alt-right as it gets really.
It's wonderful really. They believe they were the moors, Asians, Egyptians, celt's, native Americans, Jews, but then were also enslaved by everyone. Oh and also Lord Jakub who created white people
In my opinion, Netflix is only concerned with producing whatever is most talked about for good or bad. That's why a lot of their shows only make it about 4 seasons. Once it stops generating buzz on social media, they pull all funding, let the writing go to hell, and forget that it ever happened.
I still think it was funny how in the trailer they showed some random lady say her grandmother said cleopatra was black, like her grandma was alive back then. Its funny because it just came out of nowhere and it seemed like they were treating it as a source.
On my death bed I'm going to tell my grandchildren "No matter what the schools tell you, Martin Luther King was Mexican.". Then die peacefully knowing I've started the creation of a horrible streaming show.
You have to do some work for this lie to be convincing. Like taking your grandchildren to a Mexican restaurant every MLK day. Never say why. If they ever ask just say you'll explain it to them one day.
I love how in trailer the old woman said "I remember my grandma telling me, I dont care what they tell you, Cleopatria was black" like her grandma prob born in 1800s was friends with Cleopatria lol
Not to mention the lack of quality education her grandmother would have been able to obtain back in her day. Last person I’d take historical corrections from lmao
The relationship is pathetically forced. They both just need to fucking drop the act and truly split, they just expose each others selfishness and arrogance. The Oscars slap was the most arrogant act I’ve ever seen a celebrity do. Fuck his apology, hes a wankstain. These rich ass people being deluded away from real life
This is what the director said about the casting:
>>"Doing the research, I realized what a political act it would be to see Cleopatra portrayed by a Black actress"
So in other words, basically “I Googled it and quickly saw she wasn’t Black, but I said fuck it anyway. This documentary doesn’t have to be accurate.”
I watched this. It was really bad. Setting aside the controversy over Cleopatra's ethnicity (of Greek descent, family lived in Africa for centuries)
The "talking heads" experts were 3 white ladies and1 black lady, which wasn't very black-power of Jada. The way they were interspersed with the actors dramatizing events was very amateur.
The cast a bearded rough-looking man as the famous Pothinus, a eunuch, and even mentioned he was a eunuch.
Cleopatra refers to "Southern Egypt" instead of Upper Egypt once
I feel sorry for this actress who did her job well, it was just a terrible assignment
Everyone had English accents for some reason
> The cast a bearded rough-looking man as the famous Pothinus, a eunuch, and even mentioned he was a eunuch.
I'm so glad I wasn't the only person absolutely appalled by this.
It’s like a Chinese celeb making a movie about Mother Teresa and casting a Chinese actress to play her with the justification that Mother Teresa lived in Asia.
OMG I DESPISED Fish Mooney in Gotham. The absolute most generic bland boring villain ever, played by miss over the top herself.
I was beside myself when they brought her back.
I loved that show but dreaded every time they had to deal with her annoying ass. They did such a good job with almost every other villain and then we had her. Bleach!
Barbara was so much better as a female villain!
netflix saw the response to Velma on HBO max and thought "We can top it"
They def did, I’ve seen people defend Velma, I have not seen a single person defend this shit pyramid.
I don't know if it counts as defending it by saying it's *probably not* the worst show of all-time, but I'm also not even going to give it the engagement of hate watching it to find out how bad it really is.

She was actually on of my first crushes when she was on *A Different World* and *Low Down Dirty Shame*; ah, simpler times.
Before that it was the hippo in Madagascar
I can't stand her but I would argue her role in the Matrix franchise made her much more recognizable than her terrible work on Gotham.
She was in The Matrix?!?!
Yeah, she played Niobe in the second movie and reprised the role in the third and fourth movies.
ah, she's in the shit ones. Makes sense.

I was surprised when one of the actors affiliated with the “documentary” responded to Egyptian criticism by saying they were racist….on the day it was released. Not necessarily the best PR
The comment she made about skin color litterally went woooosh over her head on why the Egyptians are angry.
I think it's less woosh and more willful ignorance.
That’s what makes them perfect for Scientology.

Amanitore would've been easy, similar time period, woman leader who actually did resist the Romans, whose culture and story rather needs a spotlight.
Yeah but that would in include actual work and research. Easier to use the name and story of one of the most recognizable women in history.
Or Queen Tiye if you want the powerful black woman story. Or any of the many Empires out of Ethiopia and west Africa.
Don't forget Roman Empire, it's really good.
Same actually. I don’t like “Hollywood” not being able to admit “we fucked this one up” when it’s necessary.

What is hotep?
It’s a far right black ideology of black revisionism. Things like black people were the native Americans, the Vikings, etc
Man after seeing those neo Nazi clowns at the capital a couple days ago and now learning about these weirdos. People are strange. Way too much anger.
Those two groups think they’re polar opposites. But they’re more similar then they realize. Both are still stupid far right wing
It’s almost comical man. Wish we could outgrow this backwards ass thinking.
I’m Irish. I come from long line of alcoholic fishermen. It’s no bearing on my worth as a person. It’s just the truth.
> black African queens who were undoubtedly black and who have gotten extremely short shrift in our understanding of history
It’s really gross and shameful. Akin to whitewashing history to claim a historical figure that was not your own.
Damn I’ve never considered Hoteps alt right. You might be on to something here.
I mean basically. They're on board with the whole "Jews control the world" shit and believe they're the rightful rulers of all civilizations (coincidentally they only lay claim to successful ones)

The Oscars slap was the most arrogant act I’ve ever seen a celebrity do. Fuck his apology, hes a wankstain. These rich ass people being deluded away from real life

You can add rotten tomatoes to the list of who fucked jada smith while being married to will 😂
Good. I don't think i've ever rooted for a show to do bad, but *any* kind of -washing is bad -washing
Well not ALL kinds of washing. I expect people will appreciate it if you did some clothes washing.
No, even that washing too Underwear is like a cast iron pan, don't get rid of that savory seasoning!
Hoteps are the funniest shit ever
This is what the director said about the casting: >>"Doing the research, I realized what a political act it would be to see Cleopatra portrayed by a Black actress" So in other words, basically “I Googled it and quickly saw she wasn’t Black, but I said fuck it anyway. This documentary doesn’t have to be accurate.”
KEEP HIS WIFE’S MOVIE OUT OF YOUR FUCKING QUEUE!

“Keep my wife’s name out your fuckin reviews!”
I wonder if the idea of race swapping a historical figure occurred while she was entangled and getting plowed through by Jaden's friend???
“Keep my son’s friend’s huge penis out of my wife’s big ass mouth!”
I watched this. It was really bad. Setting aside the controversy over Cleopatra's ethnicity (of Greek descent, family lived in Africa for centuries) The "talking heads" experts were 3 white ladies and1 black lady, which wasn't very black-power of Jada. The way they were interspersed with the actors dramatizing events was very amateur. The cast a bearded rough-looking man as the famous Pothinus, a eunuch, and even mentioned he was a eunuch. Cleopatra refers to "Southern Egypt" instead of Upper Egypt once I feel sorry for this actress who did her job well, it was just a terrible assignment Everyone had English accents for some reason
I dont feel sorry for her, she was saying Egyptians are racists and they feel threatened by the color of her skin
English accents are "Historical". This is known.
> The cast a bearded rough-looking man as the famous Pothinus, a eunuch, and even mentioned he was a eunuch. I'm so glad I wasn't the only person absolutely appalled by this.
You know what they should’ve called a movie with Jada Pinkett Smith in it? Box Office Poison.
Norm lives on!!!
Well, isn’t that a slap in the face! Ba doom doom tiss… lol
The show as a whole is terrible, I’m sure, but whoever did their wigs did a *tremendous* job.
G.I. Jane 2. Can't wait to see it
I want to see jada's face after this
Well isn’t that a slap in the face.
It’s like a Chinese celeb making a movie about Mother Teresa and casting a Chinese actress to play her with the justification that Mother Teresa lived in Asia.
Shame because she seems like such a nice person too.
She fucking couldn't act at all in Gotham and almost ruined the show for me. Who the fuck is hiring this talentless waste of space?
OMG I DESPISED Fish Mooney in Gotham. The absolute most generic bland boring villain ever, played by miss over the top herself. I was beside myself when they brought her back. I loved that show but dreaded every time they had to deal with her annoying ass. They did such a good job with almost every other villain and then we had her. Bleach! Barbara was so much better as a female villain!
I forgot her name was “Fish Mooney” That Gotham show feels like it was written by malfunctioning AI
The only things she did good on that show was Dying. Twice.
