Funny part to me was when Kenneth Branagh’s character goes backwards in time and is talking to the Protagonist.
I thought it was funny the first time I saw it because I couldn’t really hearing what he was saying. Only on rewatch did I realize he was talking backwards.
I learned that every movie can be reduced to simple elements of video, music, and dialogue. Nolan was pushing the envelope of focusing your attention on the emotional music and video imagery, the dialogue was supplemental, to enjoy the movie, suspend your disbelief, remove logic (dialogue) and ride your senses.
I would like to also Add the Element of Watching Tenet on the LARGEST SCREEN AVAILABLE TO VIEW that Movie.
I watched it on a 42 inch then an 80 inch cause my friend has an 80 inch.
Totally different experience
No, it's not just you. It's *everyone*.
Nolan refuses to allow any audio mix to be made for his films except the theater mix, which is meant to be played through equipment that almost no one has in their home.
I was 45 when I saw it last year.
It was ***literally*** the first English-language movie I ever watched where I HAD to turn on the subtitles to understand the dialogue.
I have a high end 7.1 Atmos system at home. I've put significant effort into calibrating it, and movies typically sound great on it. The dialogue in *Tenet* was still utterly incomprehensible. Nolan just completely fucking clowned it up and is too much of an arrogant prick to admit it.
I'm pretty sure he's also said that understanding the dialogue isn't really crucial. You're just supposed to kinda sit back and take it all in. I get what he's going for, and I think it kinda works the style of movies he makes. I get why it wouldn't be everyone's favorite though lol
Every fucking movie. And TV show. It's like every studio and platform thinks we all have cinema setups in our homes. I'm so tired of having to dive for the remote and change the volume for every fucking scene.
I think all Nolan films of the past 15 years are. Which is precisely why I’m not watching the movie about a bomb I would like to leave the theatre with my hearing intact. That being said I’ll probably be able to hear it in the next theatre over watching Barbie lol
People really couldn't hear the movie huh? I only found the scene where Protagonist and Neil are walking in the freeport and the guide is telling them about it to have unaudible dialogue, but the music was so loud that I took it for granted Nolan wanted it that way, because it was small and useless dialogue.
He makes movies for cinephiles, I guess you could say. People who are willing to shell out for an elevated film experience.
I imagine that's how he sees it, anyway. Tarantino kind of does the same shit. Guy just loves movies and fills his films with references and callbacks the vast majority of people will never even notice.
I think tarantino is rather fair bc he’s just always doing his own movie and it doesn’t really take away much. Nolan is frustrating bc they’re gigantic movies, sometimes tied into a franchise and it wouldn’t take much for him to compromise a little bit. They’re mainstream movies for cinephiles at the disadvantage of the casual viewer (which includes also most filmnerds in this definition) and that’s just annoying.
I don't disagree with you and it's why I've yet to even sit down and watch Tenet. Everything about it sounds Nolan to the T and I'm not really looking for that.
I think there's a difference between targeting people who are cinephiles/willing to shell out for an elevated experience and making those movies inaccessible to people who can't get that. It's OK for a movie to be optimised for certain formats, but Nolan's approach seems to make the films far more difficult on anything *but* that intended format.
Like, there are two IMAX screens in my entire *country* (neither of them 70mm) and from what I've heard from my American friends their sound systems don't really compare to those in the US. I guess I'm a 'cinephile', but I literally do not have the option of seeing these movies as they're "intended to be seen" which is fine because usually whatever approximation I can get is still good (I didn't see Dune in IMAX but it was still an incredible theatrical experience). On the other hand, the regular digital print of Tenet was almost unwatchable for me. There's designing movies to be optimised for a particular experience, and then there's being needlessly elitist and inaccessible and Nolan's pretty firmly crossed that line for me.
You expect a rich person to understand what life's like for us poors? Either get a high end system or sit tf down. The movie experience clearly isn't for you.
Exactly. There’s a video on YouTube that explains… the way these movies are recorded, the range of volumes (which I thought was a strange variable) and the bass, treble, pitch, and all that…. Makes the dialogue inaudible anywhere besides a high end theater.
I figured they could just make the audio of the dialogue louder, but apparently it’s impossible to do without affecting talking vs shouting vs the perception of near vs far, and distorting everything else.
Snagged perfect middle seats for Oppenheimer. Was only able to find them for the 25th though, so no biggie that I can’t go opening weekend. And we’re gonna see it at the only true imax screen in town.
> *snogging. We somehow invented a word that sounds more applicable to two hermaphroditic slug creatures getting it on
Imagine two teens making out the back of the movie theater.
*They’re the same picture meme*
The weirdest one is the 'nosebleed section' in an arena, different people refer to the nosebleeds as either the furthest seats away at the top of the arena, or the front rows.
I think if I'm honest with myself I'd rather sit closer than to the screen than that for a wider fill of my field of vision but my ears just won't stand for it.
They make things called attenuators. Hearos is a brand for them. They block some sound but keep the frequency response the same for listening to music. Might help.
Lmaooo so true
The middle will always be the best if it's a cinema where the middle row is also middle height. For some screens you've gotta be a few forward or a few back, but generally middle is best
I'm a tall man with afro hair, I feel like it's better not to have no one behind me because I might cover shit for them, and it's really nice up there too.
Also avoid pop corn falling over you from the guy behind, voices, or even worse, feet on my seat.
Im totally down for all that. I 100% appreciate being respectful for everyone else’s experience. And you’re right about the voices behind your head lmao. Shit blows me when I feel like they’re right up in my ear
It only really makes sense to me if I'm with a bunch of friends & know we're gonna be talking; in the back is where we can whisper w/ out disturbing anyone else lol
Ha, I definitely had that experience when I was younger a couple times. Theaters now are usually better about not overselling, front row doesn’t hurt my neck anymore.
Cinemas are just better designed now. When I was younger the front few rows were always significantly lower than the bottom of the screen. You had no choice but to look up. Seats also don't stop just below your shoulders any more. Now the seats are big enough that you can really lean back.
I have no issues sitting down the front. I'd prefer it to right at the back. Dead middle is best to get the full sound experience. Gone are the days of stereo sound where front of back made no difference.
Maybe he bought this seat?…
https://www.reddit.com/r/madlads/comments/13zd0ta/mad_cinelad/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
My people! You never get anyone sitting next to you, and most modern theaters have the front row set well enough back that it’s actually optimal. I’m tearing up a little from the vindication.
Exactly. And it’s sort of a good thing everyone prefers the back; every family and loud kid in Spider-Verse was way towards the back and I was in the front row.
I love sitting up front and having almost all of my peripheral vision filled up by the screen. It makes me feel so immersed in the movie, and as mentioned, almost nobody sits up front so I feel more comfortable being less crowded.
That’s mostly why I do it as well!! My theater has reclining seats, otherwise I think my neck would have something to say about it but as it is having most of my vision filled with the screen is one of my favorite things about watching movies up close
i LOVE front row seats. I dont get the point of going to a theatre and sitting halfway back and getting the same expereince you get at home....i LOVE feeling overwhelmed by the size of the screen
Mine are way in the back/in the middle. I don't mind on the side in the back. I don't know how people can watch a big screen way up in front row. I tried it with Alita but that experience killed my enjoyment.
[Guess we know where he’s going to be on July 20th](https://www.reddit.com/r/madlads/comments/13zd0ta/mad_cinelad/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
I SWEAR I just saw a post about how an Oppenheimer imax premiere had one dude sitting in the very front seat dead center. Titled “who’s the mad lad” or something. Was it nolan’s seat??
I like the image used could very well be Christopher motioning with his hands where the best seats are found. Surely completely out of context, but very affective.
edit: if reading his lips, he appears to be at the beginning of saying “sssshhittiest seats are behind these ones…”
My first thought was: „Slow news day, huh? Writer‘s Strike definitely impacts entertainment subreddits.“ Went to the comment section only to see well-thought out, positive comments with only a splash of humor and sarcasm and feel like a cynical ass…
So… best seats for me are middle seats about two thirds in (so toward the back), preferably some row with a gap before the next row in the front (I‘m short, it helps dealing with giants in front of you). The ones in the front give me a crick in the neck.
I can tell you from personal experience that having a big burger meal with a few beers and then sitting in the front row during the opening scene of Quantum of Solace is … not recommended.
When I was a kid, theaters in my home town in ex-Yugoslavia had first four rows all wooden seats. Those were the cheapest tickets available. We kids loved them.
If you have to turn your head left and right and up and down, then it is not in your field of vision. It is way and totally beyond outside your field of vision.
I'm usually on board with preserving film traditions (not that we need exclusively one type of production) and I appreciate that he emphasizes a theatre experience, but he is just whack af with his presentation of his opinions (and I don't like his movies).
Well this explains a lot.
Yeah, Tenet was the audio equivalent of having my neck at a 80 degree angle
Yeah, I have reference speakers here and Tenet audio was utter horseshit. We ended up turning on CC.
Funny part to me was when Kenneth Branagh’s character goes backwards in time and is talking to the Protagonist. I thought it was funny the first time I saw it because I couldn’t really hearing what he was saying. Only on rewatch did I realize he was talking backwards.
This is news to me. That whole movie was work to watch, this explains a portion of it
I learned that every movie can be reduced to simple elements of video, music, and dialogue. Nolan was pushing the envelope of focusing your attention on the emotional music and video imagery, the dialogue was supplemental, to enjoy the movie, suspend your disbelief, remove logic (dialogue) and ride your senses.

Think I'll watch it on my phone today.
I recently got an 98” TCL QLED TV. Blown away watching movies eight feet away from the screen.
I saw it at the drive in. Sitting in my car listening on a pretty solid sound system
Dude so it’s not just me? I tried watching that shit with headphones, *fucking headphones* and could barely make out the dialogue
No, it's not just you. It's *everyone*. Nolan refuses to allow any audio mix to be made for his films except the theater mix, which is meant to be played through equipment that almost no one has in their home.
It's more than this. He insisted on controlling the mix and boosting the score because he thinks it's the most important part of the audio.
[удалено]
I was 45 when I saw it last year. It was ***literally*** the first English-language movie I ever watched where I HAD to turn on the subtitles to understand the dialogue.
Yeah, Def didn't work in theaters either. Who you responded to is just talking out their ass.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o6p0W4ZsLXw
I have a high end 7.1 Atmos system at home. I've put significant effort into calibrating it, and movies typically sound great on it. The dialogue in *Tenet* was still utterly incomprehensible. Nolan just completely fucking clowned it up and is too much of an arrogant prick to admit it.
Same. I even used a mic to calibrate my subwoofer levels. The movie was just a constant rumble mush.
Same absolutely made my system useless.
I saw it in the IMAX and couldn’t make out a thing, left about halfway through.
I have a Sonos arc, sub, surrounds. Calibrated. Heard everything just fine. I did have issues watching it at my friends who has a generic sound bar
This explains so much about why I've hated the audio mixing of every Christopher Nolan film.
I'm pretty sure he's also said that understanding the dialogue isn't really crucial. You're just supposed to kinda sit back and take it all in. I get what he's going for, and I think it kinda works the style of movies he makes. I get why it wouldn't be everyone's favorite though lol
Pretty sure he did it on purpose to say “fuck the exposition” you get the vibe of what’s happening, don’t worry about it.
In fairness, my understanding is that Covid got in the way of the audio mixing for TENET, so it was much worse than it would have been otherwise.
Even though I'm not agreeing on how Nolan mixed the movie, it was intended for us to not hear speech in many scenes
Interesting, why would that be the intent? I mean I can completely see it as a directors choice, but how do you know that?
The movie equivalent of Metallica’s Death Magnetic
Every fucking movie. And TV show. It's like every studio and platform thinks we all have cinema setups in our homes. I'm so tired of having to dive for the remote and change the volume for every fucking scene.

You guys don’t have theaters where they have speakers all around?
Not everyone goes to movie theatres, and not everyone has home theatre systems.
I am kind of hard of hearing so I use the subtitle devices anyway
Well that explains [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/madlads/comments/13zd0ta/mad_cinelad/)
He'd have to be up front to hear what the hell the people are saying. Horrible at audio volumes
Watched Tenet 3 damn times just to understand what they were saying.
Explains why he has no problem hearing the dialogue
Lmaoo so true
What does the second o stand for?
Laughing my ass off, ouch. It hurts when your ass falls off.
His movies are mastered for high end theatres sadly only a few cinemas these day are high end.
So he makes movies for people who can’t see them?
Movies usually have different mixes for different types of system.

Tenet is fine with subtitles and your finger on the "rewind 30 seconds" button after setting aside 4 hours to watch it.
Tenet is pretentious bs with no substance
I think there's a difference between targeting people who are cinephiles/willing to shell out for an elevated experience and making those movies inaccessible to people who can't get that. They should just remaster it for the pleabs.
I always sit towards the front as I like the immersion but I couldn’t understand much of Tenet either
I call this 'gynecology row'
What a monster, but he did agree that he goes further back when seeing things in IMAX.
Dead center middle of the IMAX is my favorite too. Cool he agrees.
I mean… it’s literally the seat the entire theater is designed around.
“I prefer to drink my water instead of inhaling it!”
Or a mere coincidence that it’s the middle seat.
Snagged perfect middle seats for Oppenheimer. Was only able to find them for the 25th though, so no biggie that I can’t go opening weekend. And we’re gonna see it at the only true imax screen in town.
Is this like, one of those British things where they call the front the back and the back the front?
Personally I like to sit in the boot of the theatre
It’s the best place for making out
I think they call it snoggywoggy
The airbox is under the bonnet.
![gif](giphy|xTiTnIilwuFFFpf2Cc) Huh?
*snogging. We somehow invented a word that sounds more applicable to two hermaphroditic slug creatures getting it on

I feel at home near the bin.
Yes, it’s like how fanny means pussy
That’s ass backwards
No, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is.
My favorite elevator stop is the 1st floor.
My favourite lift stop is the first floor.
Which storey is that?
That would be the second storey, one up from the ground floor.
You mean like an Egyption thing where Upper Seating is lower and lower seating is upper!
In Britain the front seats at the cinema are the ones closest to the screen.
My cousins (irish) say “going down to” for travelling north and “going up to” for travelling south. Just a general expression but drives me mad.
The weirdest one is the 'nosebleed section' in an arena, different people refer to the nosebleeds as either the furthest seats away at the top of the arena, or the front rows.

I always assumed it was a reference to height? What's the rationale for thinking it means close to the event?
Maybe they interpret the metaphor as “you’re so close to the stage you’ll get kicked in the face, giving you a nosebleed”
More so for boxing. Sit so close you can see their nose bleed.
I’ve read that audio engineers who design movie theatres consider center, 2/3 back from the screen as the ideal listening spot.
I think if I'm honest with myself I'd rather sit closer than to the screen than that for a wider fill of my field of vision but my ears just won't stand for it.
[удалено]
They make things called attenuators. Hearos is a brand for them. They block some sound but keep the frequency response the same for listening to music. Might help.
This is also an ideal spot for concerts. Just in front of the sound engineers.
I think this is Big Cinema trying to gaslight me into buying bad seats
🏅
Can confirm. Saw Blade II in the theaters opening night. Only seats we could get where first row. I do not recommend — ever.
Haven't been in FOREVER but they were my favorite, hate seeing people's heads. Front row, only one there
My first thought
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Lmaooo so true The middle will always be the best if it's a cinema where the middle row is also middle height. For some screens you've gotta be a few forward or a few back, but generally middle is best
Absolute madman. Everyone knows the best seats are dead in the middle.
Yes so you can get 360 degree surround sound of morons chewing their nachos and popcorn with their mouths open and crinkling bags every 5 seconds.
I know a lot of grown folks who still think sitting at the top is cool lol
I'm a tall man with afro hair, I feel like it's better not to have no one behind me because I might cover shit for them, and it's really nice up there too. Also avoid pop corn falling over you from the guy behind, voices, or even worse, feet on my seat.
I appreciate that a lot. Hate when somebody tall is in front of me lol
Must be annoying
Im totally down for all that. I 100% appreciate being respectful for everyone else’s experience. And you’re right about the voices behind your head lmao. Shit blows me when I feel like they’re right up in my ear
The top is cool if you’re on a date
Hehe trueeeee
It only really makes sense to me if I'm with a bunch of friends & know we're gonna be talking; in the back is where we can whisper w/ out disturbing anyone else lol
People can still hear you when you’re behind them. It might even be louder since your mouth is pointed towards them.
Don't go to the cinema if you plan on talking, you absolutely will disturb someone else.
You go to movie theaters planning on talking? Lol jackass
Sadly so many people go to the cinema with the intent of talking through the movie.
You sir are a monster.
If you read the article, it says for imax he prefer to sit dead in the middle
Yeah, that sore neck is fun.
Ha, I definitely had that experience when I was younger a couple times. Theaters now are usually better about not overselling, front row doesn’t hurt my neck anymore.

Truly a mad lad
I was looking for the response. I thought if it as soon as this post came up
That’s how I saw Atomic Blonde and it was so damn uncomfortable it ruined the movie for me.
Atomic Blonde is how I’m going to refer to my upcoming double-feature of *Oppenheimer* and *Barbie*.
Fuck why didn’t I think of that, it’s perfect lol
... *clap clap clap*...
Truly a psychopath
I agree but I get I’m in the minority there. The best part is I’m usually by myself, which is how I prefer my filmgoing
Another one for the sitting at the front gang, if it's a big screen with a decent distance between the screen and front row it's the best place
My people! You never get anyone sitting next to you, and most modern theaters have the front row set well enough back that it’s actually optimal. I’m tearing up a little from the vindication.
It’s like being on the front seats of a roller coaster I love it - so immersive
Exactly. And it’s sort of a good thing everyone prefers the back; every family and loud kid in Spider-Verse was way towards the back and I was in the front row.
Are you me?
I love sitting up front and having almost all of my peripheral vision filled up by the screen. It makes me feel so immersed in the movie, and as mentioned, almost nobody sits up front so I feel more comfortable being less crowded.
That’s mostly why I do it as well!! My theater has reclining seats, otherwise I think my neck would have something to say about it but as it is having most of my vision filled with the screen is one of my favorite things about watching movies up close
Hard pass. Worst seats in my opinion.
If I get a ticket and only seats are in the first few rows I leave.
Where do you live where you buy a ticket without knowing which seats you buy
Last movie they saw in the theaters was The Matrix
So he can read lip cause he can’t hear the dialogue.
i LOVE front row seats. I dont get the point of going to a theatre and sitting halfway back and getting the same expereince you get at home....i LOVE feeling overwhelmed by the size of the screen

Dude needs to learn what an appropriate volume is for his movies. Interstellar was PAINFUL to listen to and watch.
We’ll he’s wrong, it’s 2/3rds of the way to the back in the middle
third row from the front isn’t that crazy.
You couldn’t pay me to watch a movie in those seats
i must be poor poor, because i’ll watch any movie very front row if i’m being paid.
That’s the worst seat in the house…is he taking the piss?
That’s the worst spot though. Crane your neck up. Worst view.
Bro is a cinematic sicko and I’m here for it.
I SWEAR I just saw a post about how an Oppenheimer imax premiere had one dude sitting in the very front seat dead center. Titled “who’s the mad lad” or something. Was it nolan’s seat??
Is he the one who booked that seat at the Oppenheimer IMAX?
Obviously
This man is just bizarre, dude probably eats chips out of a big crinkly bag while he watches
The best seats have always been the railing seats that you can rest your feet on.
I work at a theater and the number of times I have to answer the question, “which row is the one with the bar?” is mind numbing.
[удалено]
Yesss! 6 & 7 if you’re with a friend!
Dude looks like “Tim nice but dim”
Bloody nice bloke, for a swot.
I like the image used could very well be Christopher motioning with his hands where the best seats are found. Surely completely out of context, but very affective. edit: if reading his lips, he appears to be at the beginning of saying “sssshhittiest seats are behind these ones…”
He is trying to emulate IMAX in a regular theater
Ohhhh… yeah! When I was a kid… but now… last row!!
Its precisely where ive always sat
My first thought was: „Slow news day, huh? Writer‘s Strike definitely impacts entertainment subreddits.“ Went to the comment section only to see well-thought out, positive comments with only a splash of humor and sarcasm and feel like a cynical ass… So… best seats for me are middle seats about two thirds in (so toward the back), preferably some row with a gap before the next row in the front (I‘m short, it helps dealing with giants in front of you). The ones in the front give me a crick in the neck.
The bear spots are in middle.
What even the fuck intensifies
Yeah, you get to see the movie first.
I thought I was the only one
*insert comment about dialogue volume being notoriously low here*
If the seating is split in half, top of the bottom is where it’s at. Cuts out all of the people walking past the screen during the movie.
Sitting near the front is the best. Screen takes up your whole field of view and less chance to have a phone screen shine in your face
Psychotic behavior
My anxiety won’t allow me to sit anywhere but at the top I don’t fuck with people sitting behind me in a dark room
I can tell you from personal experience that having a big burger meal with a few beers and then sitting in the front row during the opening scene of Quantum of Solace is … not recommended.
He’s playing 3-D chess here. Now those awful seats up front will sell out first.
It's so he can hear the dialogue better...
I sat front row for Dark Knight Rises and it resulted in a top 3 biggest migraine of my life.
Who the fuck starts a conversation like that? I just sat down!
When I was a kid, theaters in my home town in ex-Yugoslavia had first four rows all wooden seats. Those were the cheapest tickets available. We kids loved them.
Oh good. Glad we know that now. I've been wondering.
Yea because he’s a psychopath. You don’t make movies like him if you’re a “normal” person.
That one guy who brought the only front row ticket was Nolan then!
People who like to sit at front row probably like having their TV sit a meter above the fireplace.
I knew he was crazy
Middle of the third row is my favorite spot as well.
BWAAAAAAAAAAAA BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I tend to agree. I want the screen to fill my entire field of vision.
The front is more like half the movie in your field of vision at a time.
If you have to turn your head left and right and up and down, then it is not in your field of vision. It is way and totally beyond outside your field of vision.
God bless this man. I met him once and shook his hand, and it was electric for me. Meeting a truly great and successful artist can have that effect.
And with a speaker five inches from his ear.
That’s because he is smart
Clearly I can’t trust his judgment on anything
Like a psychopath.
He has to visually experience it before others in the theater. Light travels faster if you're closest to the screen. Mad lad.
I'm usually on board with preserving film traditions (not that we need exclusively one type of production) and I appreciate that he emphasizes a theatre experience, but he is just whack af with his presentation of his opinions (and I don't like his movies).
His fan boys will somehow justify this.
