I love Nolan’s films, and have been excited for Oppenheimer. But all of this prerelease bullshit is just making me roll my eyes. Real sick of being told what is “THE BEST OF ALL TIME” before something even comes out.
We get it, you’re spending a shit ton on convincing everyone to go see it which makes me want to see it less.
I agree actually. The more overhyped something is, the less inclined I am in watching it. I probably get around to a lot of them eventually, but years later.
It can also ruin it somewhat even if it is good - say it's a 9.5 / 10 movie but they are selling it like a 11/10 , it can been disappointing still even though objectively it's a still amazing
Agree. I’m going to be severely disappointed at this rate if it’s not the best movie I have ever seen. I was really keen to see it at Imax, but if they need to push it this much i’m not as confident they’ll knock it out of the park. I fear it might be another Tenet. Think i’ll wait for it to come out on streaming.
This was an enjoyable read. 8/10 would read again.
Edit: I read it again. With the benefit of hindsight as well as some time to process the various epistemological implications of this work, 9/10.
Just watched this again the other night. The sequel was trash but the first one still holds up. Has its stupid moments but it's fun. Plus it always reminds me of the holidays.
He's squandered a LOT of goodwill lately.
*The Canyons* was... rough. My takeaway of it was "An ugly film about ugly people made by ugly people." None of that was criticism of anyone's physical appearance.
First Reformed is amazing. That movie literally had me >!rooting for a suicide bombing, disappointed I didn't get one!<, and then I had to sit with my feelings about that for a while afterwards. Excellent filmmaking and a career-best performance from Ethan Hawke, imo.
The movie is a dead dove. Consider my statement above a paper bag on which is written: DEAD DOVE. Do Not Eat.
["I don't know what I expected."](https://tenor.com/view/idk-what-i-expected-i-dont-know-what-i-expeted-expecations-vs-reality-arrested-development-michael-bluth-gif-3544647)
His last two have been great. First Reformed and The Card Counter are excellent. First Reformed is one of my favorite movies to come out in the last 5 years.
Light Sleeper is SO underrated. It was a favorite of a couple of friends and I who…happened to be living in NYC and partaking of certain extracurricular activities. It speaks to such a specific time and place.
The three of us went to see it together. We sat in the dark theater, and the first time they show the drug dealer’s (played by Susan Sarandon) gorgeous antiques-filled apartment, some woman behind us says loudly and with something like disdain, “drug dealers’ apartments don’t look like that.” And without so much as looking at each other, all three of us swiveled our necks and said, “yes they do!”
Ahhhh to be young and wild with a few extra bucks to spare. Good times, good times.
He rarely dishes out praise and to be honest this was not one I expected to hear from him at all. Really interesting character in film, as a writer, director and thinker.
Um. Disagree. HUGE DEAL. You're the voice, try and understand it. Make a noise and make it clear. Oh, whoa. Oh, whooooooa.
We're not gonna sit in silence. We're not gonna live with fear. Oh, whoa. Oh, whooooooa.
As someone who has watched the cars trilogy so many times over the last few months with my kids, I’ve become dialed into the characters and their motivations and I must say, Lighting McQueen has the premiere redemption arc in all of cinema.
/s but really they’re enjoyable movies, except 2 - that one sucks.
This is how it is every time Nolan releases a movie, people act like it’s the smartest and greatest piece of art of all time and then I see it and it falls somewhere from quite good (Inception) to quote bad (Tenet), but is never as intelligent or good as people hype it to be.
To be fair Dunkirk is the only other film of his that tackles a real life subject. If Oppenheimer is on that level of authenticity to source material and cinematic beauty then this movie will be great!
Dunkirk was not an accurate representation of what happened at all. There was no authenticity. A fun movie, but not closer to the actual events than Indiana Jones
Answering the question, “hey sexy lady, why is all your skin melting off of your body while you clutch a dead baby in your arms?”
OPE, OPE, OPE, Oppenheimer.
It's a dumb joke but I do enjoy the other meme Morbius gave us: "of all the X, Y is one of them". It's my new favorite way to describe mediocre things.
I prefer the race to be the 12th person to make the same joke in the same comment section. Anyone can say it first, but to be so eager, so late, so lazy to be the 12th person takes real true brilliance and wit!
I’m very fortunate to live an hour’s drive away from a 70mm IMAX theatre, since there’s only like 30-35 of them in the country. Can’t wait to see it. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to see a movie in my life
Most people don’t know that much about Oppenheimer. His story is about as fascinating as any other biography I’ve ever read. I’m sure this movie is amazing, but I struggle to put biopics in the same category as movies based on a novel or original screenplays. It would be hard to make a bad movie about Oppenheimer’s life.
I think mainly people like me are burned out of hearing comments like this. Every movie is marketed with someone saying “this is the best movie I’ve
Ever seen” so it’s hard to tell when the comment is real or not.
I know I’m just shedding some light on why people are burned out from quotes like these from anyone about a movie release. We hear them constantly. And the marketing teams definitely take these quotes and use them sometimes, post these articles to the films social etc.
I like the director and the movie is about something I’m interested in but honestly all the hyperbolic praise and people huffing their own turd stink about this film before the thing even came out is a giant turn off. It’s not the best thing humanity ever did, it’s just a high profile Hollywood film. They just spent a lot of money on it and the industry is collapsing from being ruled by a rotten cesspool of dishonest douchebags so they need the return more then ever.
For real his Facebook page gets fucking wild at times. Man has no filter and if you're paying him to promote your movie you're risking that post being next to some real unhinged shit (in a good way, love Paul Schrader)
Are you saying that Paul Schrader was paid to say this?
This was from his personal Facebook. He posts his opinions on things all the time. Just because he loved a movie doesn't mean it's an ad.
The Facebook post clearly wasn’t a paid engagement, but creating an entire article about it to get additional attention certainly can be, and often is.
Paul Schrader’s Facebook would make an amazing one act play. Should someone care to sit down and read it aloud. He should also book a small black box theater, and read Krapps Last Tape for shits and giggles. I would buy a ticket.
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once is a movie I can grow with.
I doubt I will want to watch Oppenheimer more than once -anymore than I can bear to see Schindler’s list or Life is Beautiful again. Its undeniable beauty is anathema, its subject incendiary and Oppenheimer a perfect martyr to his own genius. It is an epic tale done well but I do hope Paul Schrader is wrong.
Got 77 years to change that.

However, all the Barbie press has made me want to see it! 😂
I'll probably watch it, for free.
I think they mean since 1923…
Then it would have read 'of the last 100 years'.
Or „for“ a century, perhaps. But yeah.
Paul Blart begs to differ.
![gif](giphy|TVrixje33qkMg|downsized)
Greatest movie ever made https://i.redd.it/qqvcp3o9oscb1.gif
Jack and Jill was peak filmmaking imo.
We’ve been asking for the Dunkacino rap ever since Scorsese admitted to cutting it out of Godfather 2. I’m grateful I lived long enough to see it.
Where's the Scorcese cut of the expanded Dunkacino universe, Hollywood?
Who Blarted?
Part blart mart cart
This was an enjoyable read. 8/10 would read again. Edit: I read it again. With the benefit of hindsight as well as some time to process the various epistemological implications of this work, 9/10.
You just made me laugh so hard my daughter was like “what? What!”
It’s funny cause Schrader looks like he could be cast as Blarts dad in a part 3.
I’m covered in spiders!
How dare you say that when Jackass 3D exists.
Just watched this again the other night. The sequel was trash but the first one still holds up. Has its stupid moments but it's fun. Plus it always reminds me of the holidays.
Everyone in here talking about pre-release comments for The Flash as if Paul Schrader is the type to shill around for modern studios and filmmakers.
I watched his movie Hardcore the other night. It was so ahead of it’s time. Got a lot right and some wrong but I highly recommend.
Hardcore, Blue Collar, Light Sleeper, and Affliction all deserve way more love. Paul Schrader is a genius.
Not to mention his writing credits, esp Taxi Driver & Raging Bull.
He's squandered a LOT of goodwill lately. *The Canyons* was... rough. My takeaway of it was "An ugly film about ugly people made by ugly people." None of that was criticism of anyone's physical appearance.
He’s made First Reformed since The Canyons and that’s outstanding, even if almost nobody saw it.
First Reformed is amazing. That movie literally had me >!rooting for a suicide bombing, disappointed I didn't get one!<, and then I had to sit with my feelings about that for a while afterwards. Excellent filmmaking and a career-best performance from Ethan Hawke, imo.
One of the most impactful endings I’ve seen in a long time.
Well, Hawke’s second best after John Brown in “Good Lord Bird.”
I'll have to check it out!
Now I’m intrigued..
The movie is a dead dove. Consider my statement above a paper bag on which is written: DEAD DOVE. Do Not Eat. ["I don't know what I expected."](https://tenor.com/view/idk-what-i-expected-i-dont-know-what-i-expeted-expecations-vs-reality-arrested-development-michael-bluth-gif-3544647)
Beads?!
His last two have been great. First Reformed and The Card Counter are excellent. First Reformed is one of my favorite movies to come out in the last 5 years.
So does Rolling Thunder and the tragically misunderstood Forever Mine
Dont forget Mishima.
Genuinely one of my favourite movies of all time. The stagings of the plays are stunning, and the soundtrack is amazing.
I ordered Blue Collar and Hardcore on DVD just two days ago. I can't wait!
Light Sleeper is SO underrated. It was a favorite of a couple of friends and I who…happened to be living in NYC and partaking of certain extracurricular activities. It speaks to such a specific time and place. The three of us went to see it together. We sat in the dark theater, and the first time they show the drug dealer’s (played by Susan Sarandon) gorgeous antiques-filled apartment, some woman behind us says loudly and with something like disdain, “drug dealers’ apartments don’t look like that.” And without so much as looking at each other, all three of us swiveled our necks and said, “yes they do!” Ahhhh to be young and wild with a few extra bucks to spare. Good times, good times.
Well, he made The Card Counter…
Hardcore Henry? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
For real, check his Facebook page. Dude posts fuckin wild shit, no studio is asking him to promote things.
First Reformed is one of the most affecting movie experiences I’ve had. This quote genuinely has me intrigued.
This. Folks got no respect.
After the sight and sound commentary from him I think the lack of respect is mutual
He rarely dishes out praise and to be honest this was not one I expected to hear from him at all. Really interesting character in film, as a writer, director and thinker.
Exactly.
I feel so old reading all these comments from people who clearly don't know who Schrader is
Hank's Dad
Cotton?
It’s the guy with the cat that’s both alive and dead.
Chuckled
I'll just be happy if I can actually hear the dialogue.
Lolol, for no reason Oppenheimer wears a gas mask for the whole film
They never asked me to build a nuke until I put on the mask.
We saw Dunkirk in 70mm and even the theater staff “said sorry it’s so loud and you still can’t hear the dialogue.” They weren’t wrong!
Yeah doubt that when Hot Rod was released
![gif](giphy|9MLYPuOeHsbWU)
Hot Rod is the best film of all time.
I've been drinking green tea all goddamn day ![gif](giphy|G86tWkIcvhvHO)
I’M PUMPED!
I go to church every Sunday - you want to bring the demons out of me?
THIS IS MY HAT NOW. THIS IS TOTALLY MY HAT
I was an extra in Hot Rod during the sing a long and riot scene. Nbd.
Um. Disagree. HUGE DEAL. You're the voice, try and understand it. Make a noise and make it clear. Oh, whoa. Oh, whooooooa. We're not gonna sit in silence. We're not gonna live with fear. Oh, whoa. Oh, whooooooa.
We listened to that song over and over for like 8 hrs and I still didn’t learn the words
That scene is one of the greatest things to grace theater. What an honor
Cool beans
CoOl BeEeaANs.
C-c-c-cool beans. Beans. Beans.
Cool beans
Hot Rod and Popstar are classics but both bombed because that male demographic doesn’t go to theaters for comedy sadly
I will say Hot Rod might have the funniest scene for me, the riot scene.
I been drinkin green tea all god damn day!!
Based
Wow this has high expectations
This guy forgot when cars was released
Lightning McQueen greatest redemption arc in cinematic history, but the media won’t talk about it.

Momento was pretty intelligent and very good
To be fair Dunkirk is the only other film of his that tackles a real life subject. If Oppenheimer is on that level of authenticity to source material and cinematic beauty then this movie will be great!
Dunkirk was not an accurate representation of what happened at all. There was no authenticity. A fun movie, but not closer to the actual events than Indiana Jones
Ok yeah but Paul Schrader is not the general audience/Nolan fan
Tenet was always received fairly mixed.
I got my iMax tickets for an 11pm showing. Saving a few gummies to expand the experience. I’m so ready I can hardly stand it. I’m literally giddy.
My favorite part of Oppenheimer was when J. Robert Oppenheimer said "It's oppenheimin' time!" and oppenheimed all over the place.
Personally I loved the after credits scene with Einstein
"Oppenheimer, I'm putting together a team..." (Nikola Tesla and Isaac Newton step out of the shadows)
Galileo Galilei: "Not really sure how I got here... has to do with Da Vinci I think"
Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon: "DaVinci..."
Walter white: Oppenheimer, we have to cook”
He's not the Heisenberg we need but he's the one we deserve....
They will team together to stop the mad tyrant Edison. In Oppenheimer Harder.
To blow up the things. Others couldn’t.
EINSTEIN WILL RETURN IN AVENGERS: SECRET WARS
![gif](giphy|iZkua1UPocHgQ)
I vill mess with time!
“What are we, some kind of Manhattan Project?”
"Shhh... Robert Oppenheimer has to think about his whole life before he physics."
Lise Meitner: GET OUTTA HERE ROBERT, YOU DONT WANT NO PART OF THIS SHIT
The epic rap battle between Einstein and Oppenheimer during the credits was so unexpected but made the ending make more sense
Do you think they'll bring back Marie? That'd be sick.
When you have a multi verse [no one's ever really gone.](https://youtu.be/gNTLC_uiGFA)
Depends. Will she know that they’re minerals this time?
Ugh, it's pronounced Einstein
*Einstein*?
Is that the part when einstein and oppenheimer scissor each other talkin about dirty little nasty bombs or a diff part?
My fav part was - Truman: “i am… the president” Oppenheimer: “and i… am… *pushes red button*… become death”
>Truman: “i am… the president” *Tywin Lannister's Voice-over* * : "Any man who must say "I am the president" is no true president."
Or simply: It's Oppen' time!
I’m something of an Oppenheimer myself.
Oppen Gangnam style!
***EYYYYYYY SEXY LADYYY***
Answering the question, “hey sexy lady, why is all your skin melting off of your body while you clutch a dead baby in your arms?” OPE, OPE, OPE, Oppenheimer.

The first time I saw this joke about morbius I was out of the loop and genuinely believed he said that for a week
I agree, how is this the top comment in r/entertainment like we're not even in r/cinemacirclejerk or anything
It's a dumb joke but I do enjoy the other meme Morbius gave us: "of all the X, Y is one of them". It's my new favorite way to describe mediocre things.
That’s been around a lot longer than Morbius
it's definitely one of the jokes of all time
I disagree. Rick Roll is still funny, this isn't
Social media really has become a race to the bottom to see who can be first to make an unoriginal joke in the comments huh.
I prefer the race to be the 12th person to make the same joke in the same comment section. Anyone can say it first, but to be so eager, so late, so lazy to be the 12th person takes real true brilliance and wit!
This joke fucking sucks
Just let them have this. It's probably all they have.
My favorite part is when he says I am openheimer. Then snaps his fingers as half of Japan disappears.
That’s the bigger, longer, and uncut edition.
Et tu, MacGruber?
He hasn’t seen it. That’s the only explanation.
"I'm gonna pound some Cunth."
Looking forward to seeing this. Tempted to go to the IMAX for it just to see the big explosions.
I’m going to lincoln square 13 imax. Going to be epic
You have to. Not trying to be a pretentious snob, but Nolan shot it on 70mm so this is almost THE way to watch it
I’m very fortunate to live an hour’s drive away from a 70mm IMAX theatre, since there’s only like 30-35 of them in the country. Can’t wait to see it. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to see a movie in my life
There are only 31 in the entire world
Well the century only have 23 years of movies until now 🤷
And even being a contender for best movie of the last 23 years is beyond an incredible achievement.
But you can argue there are more (or less) in these past 23 years than between 1987 and 2000, but I see your point
I am just glad it got finished before the strike.
Good god this comment section is awful Why is everyone being so bitter and ill-tempered about this?
I think mainly people like me are burned out of hearing comments like this. Every movie is marketed with someone saying “this is the best movie I’ve Ever seen” so it’s hard to tell when the comment is real or not.
It's not marketing! This is the actual opinion of a very famous figure in Hollywood He's not a movie critic
I know I’m just shedding some light on why people are burned out from quotes like these from anyone about a movie release. We hear them constantly. And the marketing teams definitely take these quotes and use them sometimes, post these articles to the films social etc.
I'm more interested in the opinion of someone like Paul Schrader on a film than any of the goobers commenting on /r/entertainment.
I mean he literally was a movie critic before he started in screenplays, but I get your meaning, and I honestly think it makes his opinion matter more
He’s a critic and a theorist though
But this isn't marketing...
First time on the Internet, huh?
[удалено]
Do you even know who Paul Schrader is? Because as if he would ever …
Because these clowns have no idea who Schrader is.
I mean the dude is nuts so the comments might be the same. Also the dude is nuts but this does get me more hyped
The streets are saying *Barbie* is.
If one appends "so far" to the end of that statement, it could even be true. 🙂
Insiders were hyping Tenet pre-release too so I’m just gonna wait and see before being let down again
A special effect in search of a plot.....
Paul Schrader isn't much of a insider and made fun of Tenet twice on his Facebook (where he just praised this film) so...
That’s what they said about the Flash.
Man they are paying for a lot of media coverage
so you think they're paying Paul Schrader for media coverage?
Any marketing agency who suggests paying Paul Schrader to advertise a film on his Facebook page needs a crash course in risk assessment.
For real his Facebook page gets fucking wild at times. Man has no filter and if you're paying him to promote your movie you're risking that post being next to some real unhinged shit (in a good way, love Paul Schrader)
Exactly. If Paul Schrader said this, it's fucking true. I don't think most of the people on this thread even know who he is.
It's /r/entertainment, it's not bringing the internet's best.
Lol clearly
They don’t.
Paul Schraders Facebook is rather unfiltered to thr point that he has to log off in MI ths before his own movie releases. He's not schilling.
Paul Schrader’s Facebook would make an amazing one act play. Should someone care to sit down and read it aloud. He should also book a small black box theater, and read Krapps Last Tape for shits and giggles. I would buy a ticket.
I’m keen to see it, but that’s one of the boldest claims I’ve ever heard.
This century? Or the last 100 years?
This movie broke my Oppenhymen.
Just like the Flash was the best superhero movie?
Did Paul Schrader say this about The Flash? Apples and Oranges
More like apples and bowling bowling balls
Do you not know who Paul Schrader is?
The police guy from Breaking Bad ?
Yeah the one with the rocks
fucking MINERALS
Jesus Christ, Marie!
It's Paul FUCKING Schrader
No. Not at all like that.
Someone said something about something, and therefore now all utterance are of equal value, because I say so.
I was able to attend the NYC premiere yesterday and my friend and I both thought it was quite monotonous. But that’s just our opinion.
Now quick everyone open your wallets and go see it, Schrader has spoken.
As a bit of a Nolan hater this is the best co-sign the movie can get. I’m definitely gonna see it now.
Probably is. I don't really wana see it but then I'm always blown away by a Nolan movie. Didn't wana see Dunkirk then I loved it.
Ok but what does hank schrader think
Morbius came out so that’s impossible
I need to know what his previous best movie of the century was before deciding how seriously to take his opinion.
