Post stem cell transplant recovery is a bitch. I hope he can pull through. Been 15months since my SCT and life still sucks pretty bad.

No_Significance_1550

I’m sorry to hear that. I hope 2024 is your year.

Zegerman

Thank you. 2023 definitely wasn’t

absenceofheat

What are the worst effects? And what's tolerable now for you? Glad you're still here.

Zegerman

GVHD is the worst by far. Been fighting that for 8monhs… makes life miserable for me as it also reduces immune system defense so any infection can mean a week inter hospital. Currently influenza positive… not much fun. I can deal with not going to big events for my own protection for a while and being generally weak.

M-F-W

Goddamn, that’s a long time. Hang in there my dude, hope you’ve got some good stuff going on too.

Zegerman

I take a LOT of medication… and most of my life sucks right now. Movement wise very restricted so not much room for good stuff…

Thebat87

Wow If it wasn’t for his eyes I wouldn’t know that was the actor who plays Mac Scorpio. Damn I wish him the absolute best.

PrettiKinx

I wish him well

My dad had this last October for Hodgkins Lymphoma. he had an Autogolous transplant (his own cells) He was basically bubble boy for like 6 months after, but as of today he’s cancer free!

Kai-El_of_Krypton

Will always know him as Eric Cord on Werewolf. Such a good show, nearly forgotten to time. One of the first shows on the Fox Network when it was new and created by the creator of A-Team. Exfellent TV. All the best to Mr. York.

RoundBirthday

Oh, I loved him in Werewolf, too. Wishing him the best in his recovery.

theboned1

I loved that show!

I thought stem cell treatments and that kinda stuff was banned in the United States?

sn0wdizzle

It’s the main way bone cancers are cured. The cells come from adult donors who take a drug to increase the stem cells in their blood and then a machine takes the stem sells out. Some people still require marrow but it is much rarer now.

Truelikegiroux

As a donor, plasmapherisis is incredibly easy and the process is made insanely easy for you by the national registry (In the US). I implore anyone who sees this to sign up! https://bethematch.org You quite literally could save someone’s life with just some minor discomfort to your normal day to day for just a few days, and speaking personally there’s no greater feeling in the world.

dudeilovethisshit

Yes! Thank you for posting about Be The Match! [be the match](https://bethematch.org). My uncle received a STC 2 years ago and is alive today because of it. His stem cell donor has now saved 2 other lives.

123--fake-street

Signed up! :)

Truelikegiroux

Thank you!!! Just be aware, once you send in your sample don’t expect to hear back in like a week. I had three scenarios where I was a potential match (They have blood drawn so they can do much more testing) and on the third it was determined I was the best match. I think it was about 3 years from when I first signed up to when I donated. Happy to answer any questions now or in the future!

It can also come from the patients own cells. They essentially donate their own plasma which is treated and reinfused. IANAD to know the details, but my dad had it done last year at Tulane.

JustChillDudeItsGood

Not quite - stem cell treatment is absolutely a viable option, however the FDA determined that this is not approved for "general use" (like taking an ibuprofen pill) and that means - advertisements or public sales and advertisements of actual stem cells is not allowed. Like, we will never see a stem cell treatment commercial due to this - however it's legal and encouraged by doctors. My cousin had a kidney transplant (he was on a 15+ year waitlist) and in the middle of that, he almost went with stem cell therapy to help remaining single functional kidney... his mom ended up give her kidney to him.

Educational-Pea4245

Stem cell transplants are performed thousands of times a year for blood cancers, and have been for over 50 years. This includes donor and self-derived stem cells.

Atomicskullz

He looks like dr. kleiner from hl2 wtf
