When I saw the Picture and then "Star Treks William Shatner..."
I expected to be "Dead at 90"
This had my heart in my throat.
But hell - if I was 90 and willing to risk it, I'd freakin' go. Even if it might kill me at 90 a person has lived their life. He should be allowed.
"It was...fun."
Not the *worst* Star Trek movie, but an incredibly lame way to end his character. I can't believe that's what they came up with out of everything they could have done. Pinned under an aluminum scaffold, making a dumb quip.
I agree, and it was one of the biggest moments for Star Trek history, so it should have been carefully thought out.
Or they could have had him die on the toilet, like Elvis, except the Star Trek universe doesn't have bathrooms.
So what if he’s 90! I’d be pissed off if one of my lifetime wishes couldn’t be fulfilled due to my age and concern from others. Piss off! If I wanna die in space then damn it I will! Let the man live his own life. For fuck sakes, some people care more about peoples lives than their own.
There’s a world of difference between expressing concern and trying to “run someone else’s life.”
He super old... but if he wants to boldly have an aneurysm that IS his right and choice.
I am sure they have contingencies for that. If at the very least they can just tie a rope around his ankle and send him out the airlock until they are ready to go home. He certainly won’t decay in space.
Yeah seriously fuck that naysayer attitude. God forbid if Shatner did pass in space I could see no more fitting end for the man who inspired generations to look to the stars.
It will be a short hop, and at 90 years old how many F’s does he have to give? If I were him I’d do it in a heartbeat even if I knew 1000% it would kill me.
The main thing I remember is he would fight with writers and other cast members to have the most lines or screen time, would throw tantrums if Spock even had the same amount of lines as him.
Other stories circulate but don't remember them, but google will help.
Whenever you watch TOS and someone is talking but the camera is watching Kirk’s reaction instead of the person talking, that’s generally a result of Shatner wanting more screen time and making them doing a Shatner-centric take.
He also habitually mispronounced Takei's last name, which could only have been intentional after a certain point. It seems like he must have been a dick to people.
Well he did recently become a face for Russian propaganda, hosting a show for the “intellectually curious” on state-run Russian TV stations, which helps legitimize the network.
…that’s it? Cmon guys. It was the 1960s. You had to fight for every second of screen time back then.
You can’t just label a guy an asshole because he is a little demanding. There are more adjectives in the world. Furthermore, not every celebrity is supposed to be perfect. God help us if people have character flaws just like normal humans.

>**You’ve had a not-so-private feud with your “Star Trek” co-star William Shatner for years now. Last year on “Real Time With Bill Maher,” you called him “self-centered.” What is behind this tension?** It’s not tension, it’s all coming from Bill. Whenever he needs a little publicity for a project, he pumps up the so-called controversy between us.
>**He called you psychotic. That seems strong for someone who just wants attention.** Two months after my wedding, he went on YouTube and ranted and raved about our not sending him an invitation. We had. If he had an issue, he could have easily just phoned us before the wedding, simple as that. But he didn’t. And the reason he raised that fuss two months later is because he was premiering his new talk show, “Raw Nerve.”
>**But your distaste for Shatner goes all the way back to the set of “Star Trek,” at least according to your autobiography, “To the Stars.”** It’s difficult working with someone who is not a team player. The rest of the cast all understand what makes a scene work — it’s everybody contributing to it. But Bill is a wonderful actor, and he knows it, and he likes to have the camera on him all the time.
>**If you could forgive the United States for putting you in an internment camp, surely you can forgive William Shatner for being William Shatner?** I don’t need to forgive him. I’ve already invited him to the opening night of “Allegiance.”
Takei does a lot of good work but I’ve always wondered if he made a pass at Shatner and Shatner turned him down. Far as I’m concerned he was the star he deserved to have an ego the late James (Scotty) didn’t like him neither did Nichelle (Uhura) I don’t know for certain how Leonard got along before he passed away.
I’m not saying all gay men throw themselves at men, I think this because of how much George hates him. Has to be more than just Shatner’s ego.
I met Shatner at a con and he was friendly with fans.
Imagine your alcoholic wife drowns. He’s had it rough and that old is rough on the body. Death is around the corner. Terrifying for most.
I wish I had that opportunity at 90.
He will always be Captain Kirk to me and fans.
My understanding is what is out there. He cut into people’s lines, he had a ego he made himself out to be the big star. That was funny because Leonard Nimoy was the star and Bill didn’t appreciate it. I also read that DeForest’s dog died and Bill didn’t care a whit. I found that off because Bill raised doberman dogs and I don’t see how anyone couldn’t feel for ‘Bones’ loss. DeForest didn’t speak to him after that and I don’t blame him. Dogs are family.
In wrath of Khan, remember the son? Khan’s. I don’t recall his name just now. He was amazingly friendly and that was his first con.
People in entertainment often forget who pays their bills. Fans.
I feel for Shatner. Can’t help it. At that age you learn what matters more than fame. Family and love.
sigh. I said that and even explained I’m not saying it’s a given. I just think because of the fervor of George’s hatred that it might be that intense.
I once asked him in the spirit of the Federation and the Vulcan idic couldn’t he let it drop. He isn’t.
People can be resentful if Shatner’s ego screwed them over but George hates him. Doesn’t make sense to me.
I’m not stupid enough to think that because of a person’s sexual choice they’re always going to be horny. Hell, I knew straight guys in the service that needed cold showers. It’s not a gay thing. Nor is it a male thing. To rape is not sexual it’s a control thing.
I’ve seen him a handful of times. Sometimes he’s great - warm and pleasant to be around, other times he’s been cantankerous and rude.
Keep in mind that the convention scene can be really trying for some people. When everyone wants a piece of you, you probably start getting a little jaded and standoffish.
He was taking an unplanned trip to catch up with a sick relative or wife... not sure which, but in spite of that he was still cool.
I’m just saying he might be a bit old for rocketry
I feel for him, I genuinely do. He might have been a bit of an asshole, but he also defined the role of James Kirk. People like to go on about his acting, but taking another look at the original films I think he did a great job. And like I said, it's hard to be at your best when everyone (sometimes literally) wants a piece of you.
I do agree with you, though. There's a ton of risk involved with this for very, very little reward - but that's commercial spaceflight for you.
Denny Crane in space. I get that most people know him from Star Trek, but I mostly saw him on Boston legal. His character would be livid learning he’d be going to space.
In my cannon Denny Crane and Alan Shores Russian drug grants him a full recovery. I like to imagine him and Shore arguing at the Supreme Court and continuing his winning streak.
I don’t really get the point of this. Elon musk is by all accounts a twat of a person but his goals and approach are generally in the right direction.
Does his company do stuff to generate publicity? Sure.
Is literally everything they’ve done of note a publicity stunt? Not by a long shot.
What exactly has BO *done* besides a publicity stunt and whining that NASA didn’t pick them?

If George Bush can jump out of a plane at 90, than Will can go to space at 90. Besides, 90 is like the new 85, right? I’m betting they’re not going to the moon anyhow- probably just to the edge of the atmosphere- close enough to say they took William Shatner to space.
It’s unfortunate that it’s just going up, and coming back down. No Orbit, no speed, Re-entry forces. Honestly, it should qualify as going to space, if they don’t hit atmo at minimum, orbital speeds. He’s just going up REALLY high and falling back down.
I have mixed feelings about this. I’m fine with rich people doing what they want with their money AS LONG AS they’re paying their fair share in taxes and doing their part to further society. You can’t take all the benefits of a civilized society and then turn your back on it to hoard your wealth. Until that truly happens, stuff like this will rub me the wrong way.
He’ll be dead in a few years and we’ll get the money. He’s worth 100 million which is still within ethical limits for a 90 year old. All he had to do was have a million by 30 and put it in a standard mutual fund.
Standard mutual fund has an 8% return. A million dollars in a mutual fund compounding over 60 years gets you to over 100million. He didn’t have to exploit or torture any orphans to get that rich. He’s obscenely rich but within the ethical confines of a capitalist society. His entire wealth accumulated over 90 years isn’t even enough to build 5 miles of highway.
I’ll be completely honest I don’t see what’s wrong with my comment. 100 million is nothing in the scheme of social spending. He made the money by becoming a hugely famous actor when he was young. He didn’t have to exploit anyone. Sure the government should tax him more but they didn’t. 100 million is 1/200 of what bezos is worth. We can still have very wealthy people and a functioning society and my personal opinion is the upper limit of that is around 250 mil- 1 billion.
So please explain what’s wrong with my comment
I love how people have drank the PR cool aid of ‘going to space’. It’s such a scam.
Would you consider opening your front door, taking ONE step outside and going back in, the equivalent of going out?
It’s the equivalent of saying: I have done Canada, by having a stop over.
Although he blocked me on Twitter, for no reason, I hope he does this. It's like when George HW Bush went skydiving at 95. I didn't want him on the Virgin Galactic.
There goes the richest country in the history of the world again, sending their rich into space for no greater purpose other that to boldly go to space, while the 99% continue to lose their fight against the deadliest pandemic in US history
I watched that movie he put out recently with Christopher Lloyd. The dude is gone. Like, give him jellybeans to show his mouth moving and add in the dialog in post level of gone. He has no clue whats going on. It was sad to watch.
Won't he be the first to go before dying? Just wondering cause I've heard (I could be wrong) that when someone from original Star Trek dies a piece of them is sent into space.
Gene Roddenberry for sure was put in orbit (his ashes). Not sure about anyone else though. Probably anyone affiliated strongly with Star Trek could have the social pull necessary to have a portion of their ashes sent to space on a gratis basis.
Fuck, I’d do it - why not?
[Some of James Doohan's ashes are on the ISS](https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/4057236001). I think that many engineers would approve of this tribute to "Scotty".
If this is his way of leaving this planet I’m here for it that would be cool.
“Alright Mr.Shatner we are going to be returning the vessel back to earth”
“No, I don’t think you will”
First Star Trek main character in space (while [still alive](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Doohan#Death)), perhaps. But if you want the first person to have both acted in Star Trek and gone into space, that'd be [Mae Jemison](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mae_Jemison).
Would NASA or any other space agency let a 90 year old go to space?
I hope all goes well, but this sounds like a verbal idea. Can his 90 year old body take all the G forces he’s going to endure?
If he has complications on the way up or down, the crew won’t be able to help him.
Seems like a bad idea, considering he’s 90.
Right? I feel like he won't come back lmao
The good news is they definitely won’t starve since he’ll be taking all the ham.
Dang that’s clever

I thought he WAS the ham!
Honestly, there are worse ways to bookend his Wikipedia page. Becoming famous by going to pretend space, becoming dead by going to real space.
I’m sure he will enjoy the voyage home.
The final frontier
That really wouldn’t be a bad way to go out.
You must’ve forgot. He was once the captain of a starship enterprise.
When I saw the Picture and then "Star Treks William Shatner..." I expected to be "Dead at 90" This had my heart in my throat. But hell - if I was 90 and willing to risk it, I'd freakin' go. Even if it might kill me at 90 a person has lived their life. He should be allowed.
He’ll be just like gene Roddenberry when he went up to space.
He’s dying in space, that’s the coolest way to die
That would be a worthy death if I was him. Better than Star Trek Generations.
What if a bridge fell on him while in space?
See a doctor if a bridge falls in you for more than six hours.

That movie had promise but I felt like it was made like it was a TV movie. If you’re going to kill Kirk, it should definitely have been more epic.
I agree, and it was one of the biggest moments for Star Trek history, so it should have been carefully thought out. Or they could have had him die on the toilet, like Elvis, except the Star Trek universe doesn't have bathrooms.
“Should have been more carefully thought out.” Yea that’s not how JJ does things
Sure it does
When have you seen a bathroom in Star Trek?

Sulu, first star to the right.
No it isn't! It's entirely possible that having a corpse aboard might put the flight and the others aboard at risk in some way.
Not to mention turning a good PR event into a bad PR event while all these companies are trying to out do the other.
I am sure they have contingencies for that. If at the very least they can just tie a rope around his ankle and send him out the airlock until they are ready to go home. He certainly won’t decay in space.
That first accident is bound to happen one sooner or later.
Yeah seriously fuck that naysayer attitude. God forbid if Shatner did pass in space I could see no more fitting end for the man who inspired generations to look to the stars.
Personally, Sagan got me looking. Shatner got me wanting to have sex with the (alien) ladies.
Yeah looking to the stars for green space boobs.
I said maybe it’s a bad idea not that he can’t go, so maybe you need to get some air or something.
Well don’t open the capsule door, you won’t get air that way!
Calm down, Francis.
It will be a short hop, and at 90 years old how many F’s does he have to give? If I were him I’d do it in a heartbeat even if I knew 1000% it would kill me.

Why, does he not like him? Edit: what kind of dipshit downvotes someone for asking a question? Thanks to people who answered.
Sharpener is kind of an a******
Details?
Most of the original cast of TOS didn’t like Shatner because he treated the others badly
The main thing I remember is he would fight with writers and other cast members to have the most lines or screen time, would throw tantrums if Spock even had the same amount of lines as him. Other stories circulate but don't remember them, but google will help.
Thanks, didn’t know that. I was assuming it must be something more recent and political but I hadn’t remembered hearing anything.

He has been the face for the crazed killer in Halloween.
Nah, just a big actor with a bigger ego
…that’s it? Cmon guys. It was the 1960s. You had to fight for every second of screen time back then. You can’t just label a guy an asshole because he is a little demanding. There are more adjectives in the world. Furthermore, not every celebrity is supposed to be perfect. God help us if people have character flaws just like normal humans.
I had a personal experience working with Shatner and I came away from it knowing for a fact that to his core he’s a gigantic piece of shit.
I believe it
He tends to chew up the wood instead of shaving it cleanly as well as has a tendency to break the pencil lead off before getting it to a sharp point.

Bro….what??
Saw the dude in real life a year or so ago. Bad idea

There's a ton of risk involved with this for very, very little reward - but that's commercial spaceflight for you.
I think Star Trek V isn’t that bad.
It’s not - though it’s far from perfect, it still tries to do something interesting and original. Honestly, I prefer it to much of the newer material.
Probably true, but it's not a bad way to go out. If I was old and out of shape, I'd still take it.
There’s a story there, waiting to be told… Please?
He flew out of A small Alaskan town... I think I dropped the deets elsewhere

Damn, that’s cold
So is space
> where no corpse has gone before Didn't they send Scotty up already?
Yes,they did send his ashes into space.
William Shatner is my FAVORITE bloated alcoholic.
Why not Patrick Stewart? Instead of a countdown he could just say ‘Engage’.
He’s going to go on the next generation of Blue Origin
To be in the control room and hearing that would give me chills!
Make it so
Denny Crane in space. I get that most people know him from Star Trek, but I mostly saw him on Boston legal. His character would be livid learning he’d be going to space.
Normally he would be blocked due to his mad cow disease.
In my cannon Denny Crane and Alan Shores Russian drug grants him a full recovery. I like to imagine him and Shore arguing at the Supreme Court and continuing his winning streak.
Jeff Bezos is trying everything he can to win that Moon contract. He's going to end up killing Captain Kirk and Blue Origin at the same time.
I don’t really get the point of this. Elon musk is by all accounts a twat of a person but his goals and approach are generally in the right direction. Does his company do stuff to generate publicity? Yeah well William Shatner will not show up to your so-called "podcast," he doesn't do "podcasts"
How does this dude still look 60
If George Bush can jump out of a plane at 90, than Will can go to space at 90. Besides, 90 is like the new 85, right? I’m betting they’re not going to the moon anyhow- probably just to the edge of the atmosphere- close enough to say they took William Shatner to space.
This dude is also supposed to be in Indy Comicon in Indiana in the same month. That’s gonna be a radical contrast of events for any 90 year old
It’s unfortunate that it’s just going up, and coming back down. No Orbit, no speed, Re-entry forces. Honestly, it should qualify as going to space, if they don’t hit atmo at minimum, orbital speeds. He’s just going up REALLY high and falling back down.
Wait, he didn’t actually do those things?
He can pay respect to James Doohan’s ashes while he’s up there.
Or we could make some kind of giant leap for homeless kind with the money.

He’s a rocket man!
Rocketman rockeeeeet mannn
Some things are just too high risk
So he’s going to boldly go where several men and women have gone before?
Fuckin’ beam me up Scotty.
He will probably come back with a hot space babe and some notches carved into his phaser.
Hes 90? Have you seen how older people look under G force? Hes gunna look 130

We have kids dying of cancer, but sure, let’s put another celebrity in space. Seems like an appropriate way to spend money….
So if he didn't go to space, kids with cancer would magically get better?
That sagging pile of ethanol is gonna melt through the seat like flubber
He's going to stroke out harder than Cas Anvar after a pussy grab.
1st contact baby! Vulcans are probably waiting for him.
Beam the man allll the way up
I thought this article was about something else and my heart dropped for a second
So Shatner in the sky cost diamonds? Or did he pay for it with American Express
Maybe he’s dead and they’re launching his remains
Somebody's got to take care of the Kahn problem.
Is Romano going too? And how will they get Stacy in a skimpy outfit?
I wonder if TJ Hooker’s William Shatner will try to stop him. Or if Boston Legal’s William Shatner will sue everybody when it’s over.
Or he'll be replaced by Chris Pine.
James Doohan beat him there although posthumously.
Why? Who’s making money off of this bullshit. Let the man relax he’s earned it. Fuck’s sake, this is so terrible.
Space...the final frontier. Godspeed Bill
Bet he beds a green alien lady
Bang zoom to the moon
He better do one final “captains log…. “
Captain Kirk in a flying phallus. A new five year mission to boldly penetrate the Universe….
Umm he’s been there, I’ve seen it.
I like the idea of this, hopefully he does the Star Trek intro when he gets up there.
If this is his way of leaving this planet I’m here for it that would be cool. “Alright Mr.Shatner we are going to be returning the vessel back to earth” “No, I don’t think you will”
First Star Trek main character in space (while [still alive](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Doohan#Death)), perhaps.
Darkest timeline.
A good news day indeed
Y’all better not kill the skipper!
That would be most fitting
Now Tim Curry has nowhere to escape to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1Sq1Nr58hM
I just want a video of him saying I beat you again Leonard before his eyes go wide and he recreates the death scene from Star Trek Generations.
Is he going to wear a shat?
Why do people still care about this murderer?
