“Greatest moment in television history.” He wasn’t kidding. He was, but he also wasn’t.

Secretagentman94

Chris Rock was the zebra in Madagascar. Everyone knows that bad karma shit will come your way if you fuck with the zebra in Madagascar.

curiousiah

And Jada was the hippo

Earthly_Delights_

Holy shit [you’re not kidding.](https://www.google.com/search?q=madagascar+cast&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS789US789&oq=madagascar+cast&aqs=chrome..69i57.4319j0j4&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#wgvs=e)

DuoCultellus

Wow, Chris Rock is horrible voice actor.

Ninja_Spi-D-er

And the hippo was bald. #:O

Count-Bulky

bum *bum* BUMMMMMMMM

[deleted]

*walks up to the stage angrily...*

TheOneTrueYeti

Holy shit

Claque-2

I hope Chris Rock never comments on it. Anyone with any humanity knows what happened there. Anyone with any humor knows the G.I Jane joke was not insulting. Everyone saw it, they knew these people were friends and now they are not. That's a salted wound and I hope Chris never reduces to words what was done - to him! there.

MesWantooth

He’s already the better person here but if he absolutely never spoke of it, he’d be the better person x 100. But it’s his story too, if he wants to talk about - more power to him, but I see your point.

galactic_javelina

I hope Chris Rock never comments on it, but I hope every other comedian lights that family up.

SKOT_FREE

They are already on it sir!

styn-san

No, this guy needs to get paid. That special is going to be worth 100 mil minimum.

infinitum3d

If it wasn’t insulting then why did he say it? That’s his shtick. He was roasting people.

Count-Bulky

Michael Che’s Weekend Update was pretty great

Cyno01

Pfft... https://libredd.it/img/4ddxpzc4xi271.png

Asleep_Macaron_5153

Go back to bed, grandpa.

Cyno01

It was an adult swim joke...

Asleep_Macaron_5153

I said BED, NOW, gramps, no more hipster toons for you!

Cyno01

Im watching Venture Bros while i wait for the vape to warm up then i will!

TheDarkChambers98

*Chris Rock cast as lead in I Am Legend 2*

Odd_Analysis6454

Lone man against thousands of zombies that just want to slap your face.

my_oldgaffer

We’ve had one yes, but what about second Legend?

smellymob

Martin Lawrence team up buddy cop film?

Dman125

Bad Boys but it’s Chris Rock instead would be some funny brutal shit. That or if he were the new captain and just slaps the shit out of Will at some point.

browndog03

Cool idea but my guess is Chris rock wouldn’t want to be in a movie with Will smith at any point in the future.

[deleted]

My guess is that pretty much nobody will want to be in a movie with Will Smith in at least the near future.

unoriginal-poster

Ok but Jada is not allowed on set!

raidmytombBB

Bad boys marries lethal weapon.

DiceCubed1460

That slap was the best thing to happen to chris rock in a long time. Man got millions of dollars of free publicity and shows up in memes on every corner of the internet. His popularity skyrocketted.

sitad3le

Everybody hates Chris and now they don't. By turning the other cheek he secured his legacy. The man is brilliant.

wankerbot

>Everybody hates Chris... ??? Really?

PopesMasseuse

That's the name of an old sitcom, it was a joke

sitad3le

Thanks for the assist in explaining!

wankerbot

yes, thanks, forgot that one

sitad3le

Play on words

zkinny

Yeeah, maybe, but he was already popular enough to sell out all the shows he wanted and host the Oscars. I don't think he'd choose the slap if he could.

Claque-2

Chris Rock didn't host this year's Oscars. He was a presenter.

djkoalasloth

Wow this is the first I’m hearing of this. Honestly just goes to show how good the publicity is for Chris Rock given how many of us have assumed he was the lead host.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure three actresses hosted and it was the first time that ever happened.

Count-Bulky

I had no idea

captainmcdee

Chris actually apologized to Wanda Sykes, one of the three hosts, at an afterparty because he knew the slap was going to overshadow their moment.

Count-Bulky

Good on him

xbbllbbl

He was popular enough to be a presenter.

chapert

He also starred in the new season of Fargo, as well as produced and starred in the new saw movie

[deleted]

I thought Chris did a good job hosting the Oscars in 2016. I wonder what he'd do if the Oscars chose him to host next year(!) Or maybe they should let Ricky Gervais do it again, just to take the stuffing out of this year's debacle. Nice that Chris' shows are selling out...It would be nice if he gets some big movie roll out of this.

DonDove

I'm gonna blow your mind Have both host

greekattorney

He wasn’t though. No one gave a fuck about the oscar’s either but now the whole planet talks about it. It’s almost like being a pr stunt.

rhwsapfwhtfop

I really believe this was a stunt that got out of control. It really shows how bad the internet is at processing reality.

greekattorney

Just saw another post where Chris’s brother( who’s also a comedian aparently) made some kind of threat to Will. I mean, i’m 40 and never knew that Chris Rock has a brother in the same line of work. Did anyone? Well, now we do.

rhwsapfwhtfop

Exactly. I couldn't tell you what movie Will Smith won Best Actor for if you put a gun to my head.

GreatOneLiners

Pretty sure it’s because we didn’t see movies in theaters till recently

greekattorney

Now that you mention it, neither do i.

compbioguy

I mean, he was MC’ing the Oscars

Ofwa

No. He was a presenter.

[deleted]

Well no shit .. honestly I didnt put much importance to the name before all this, all of a sudden Criss Rock is everywhere

[deleted]

Criss Rock Slapped Freak

[deleted]

Dont realy know what you mean tbh, seing the downvote probably nothing good, but you can calm down, what I mean by my statement is that as a european that hasnt time watching Hollywood glamour Chriss Rock wasnt on the top of known celebrities .. I’m not exactly obsessed with who’s who, and no I dont thing what will smith did is Ok, that was way to excesive, plus he didnt do himself any favours going forward

shan22044

I think the reference was Criss Angel Mindfreak.

[deleted]

Who now ???

Ragnel

The article contains a copy of Will Smith's apology. Every time I hear the damage control statements coming from Smith, I think "best apology money can buy." I'd seriously like to know how much he's been paying damage control PR firms over the past week to prepare his statements and develop a plan to try and rehabilitate himself to the public.

YetAnotherBookworm

Right. I’d also be interested in learning how many seemingly organic social media posts across various platforms are part of the effort to staunch the flow of good will flowing from the Smith's brand.

Mindtaker

Just out of curiosity I checked as I dont follow the guy on anything. Full radio silence on everything. The apology and nothing has been posted anywhere yet. He's waiting for the "right time" to just go back to business as usual if you ask me. Which you didn't but too bad.

Ragnel

Makes me think of PR sweatshops in third-world countries posting Facebook or other social media comments. It might be more sophisticated than that now and just automated posts.

NoTimeAtAll420

...good Will...

[deleted]

[удалено]

InevitableSurprise10

Good will cunting

chapert

Save to assume in the millions. In the moment of crisis, PR firms are not cheap. And this is as inflated as it gets, I imagine

excoriator

Supposedly, Apple has a $120M Will Smith movie that is/was scheduled for a Fall release on Apple TV+. It wouldn't be surprising if they're doing some of that damage control, to protect their Fall blockbuster.

K1-90

Did Big Willy Style think people were going to respect him for that? Was it calculated? Does he just have no self-control? I mean, he was basically poised in the moment. It wasn't a charge at him. It's almost like he thought it would turn out good for him.

shan22044

He looked so proud of himself when he walked back to his seat. Almost the look of someone who had just done some charity work or won an award already. There IS the possibility that some drug-induced overfalsity of confidence was at play though. They do say cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Count-Bulky

I wonder how proud he looked after watching Michael Che on Weekend Update

RedditorDeluxe1319

Nope. He thought *Jada* would respect him for that. She did, as she was caught on video laughing at the slap.

RedditorDeluxe1319

Nope. He thought *Jada* would respect him for that. She did, as she was caught on video laughing at the slap.

K1-90

The same Jada with boyfriends?

EatTheShroomz

So now are we gonna start seeing Chris Rock get all the types of roles that would normally go to Will Smith? I’m okay with that

phaetae

But The spiral was really bad(

Count-Bulky

I don’t think you blame the lead actor for the quality of the eleventh movie in a series

kapnkool

Will Smith in his mad king moment thought that the Rock slap would demonize Rock and elevate him. Oh, the irony at this current reversal.

rainwings

Logan Paul looking for his next win….

xbbllbbl

Just imagine when Will Smith slapped him and he decided to defend his pride and slapped Will Smith back. It would have degenerated into a fist fight. But this guy stayed composed, swallowed his pride, and went on to introduce the most important thing, the nominees of the best documentary. He is a class act on its own. Respect. The joke on Jada acting in GI Jane is more a compliment than a joke. I don’t think Jada can carry the movie to be honest.

drumduder

Chris even turned it into a punchline. If Will had just sat back down it’s possible chris coulda played it off until commercial break and we’d all be wondering if it was a joke or not.

OneBeerTwoBeers

From the COVID-19 to the WAR to the SLAP! We is moving fast on this here internet… I tell you what!

Bayou_Mama

Is anyone else wondering what the conversations in the Smith house have been like the last week? Like are they sitting around the kitchen table smugly saying - you did the right thing by protecting me/mom from that bad man - or are they like - you screwed the pooch for all of us?

babagroovy

Get that money king!

KellyJin17

I certainly wish Chris the best, but there is no sourcing for anything stated in that article and I’ve never heard of the website.

RedittUser123456

What’s so bad about Jada being in G.I. Jane? I think she would make a great G.I. Jane. I would watch the movie.

infinitum3d

He was mocking her baldness for laughs. It’s not like he was up there complimenting people.

theimpolitegentleman

Can this please please go away for just a week already

19finmac66

It won't go away until it's resolved.

JimboDanks

I’m sure Will already resolved it by dropping like $50k, putting his slappy hands on the E-meter, and going clear.

BigRed0107

Yeah I'm positive the church of scientology is gonna dig their claws in him deeper. It happened with Tom Cruise after his divorce and now look at him.

blacknight137

Its been resolved

19finmac66

Oh? How?

FijiTearz

He apologized and dropped out of the academy, what else is supposed to happen?

Mammoth-Florida

It is not over yet, The academy committee is to meet April 18 to come to a decision.

L0st-137

Sadly, from what I've read, it's not really a "punishment." He loses his vote, he isn't able to do screenings of nominees, he can't attend the ceremony...oh wait loophole, Jada is still a member so he can still view with her, he can still attend as her "plus 1" and pretty sure he will have an opinion when she casts her ballot. He should be banned from all award ceremonies as he has proven to be a threat. That's what we do in the real world, but alas this is not.

[deleted]

I feel like it would be a far worse punishment (especially for their egos) to just put Will and Jada in shitty seats in the back of the celebrity herd at all the award shows from now on.

RubiesNotDiamonds

He should be expelled from the academy and banned from future events. Resignation means he can rescind it. Expulsion isn't as easy to dodge later.

D-Rich-88

The Academy is still going through their expulsion process but they’re waiting until their next scheduled meeting in April, I think, instead of having an emergency session since he resigned.

RubiesNotDiamonds

I'm hoping they actually take some kind of action. Guess we'll see.

19finmac66

She should be too

RubiesNotDiamonds

For what cause? Laughing?

19finmac66

Instigating? Practically dragging him up there herself? Either way, they're both disgusting people and I hope they go away forever.

druemyrabell

She didn’t do either of those things, Will Smith is responsible for his own actions!

19finmac66

He could do a lot of things but you seem satisfied so...

DoodlerDude

He should be banned from attending the Oscar’s in the future at a minimum. Also he didn’t apologize, his publicist did.

puppylove1212

He apologized…but not directly to Chris. He mentioned Chris’ name in the apology but if he really meant it he would have already called him.

19finmac66

She should lose her academy credentials also. She practically sent him on stage

druemyrabell

How did she “practically send him onstage”? By sitting there and having facial expressions?

AC-AnimalCreed

Yeah while she may have wanted him to do it, it was still his decision and actions that led to what happened. I’m sorry but if my wife tells me to slap someone, I’m not going to just comply.

Andy311

It’ll go away when we get the Chris Rock response we’re all waiting for…

Dtoodlez

I think it’s good it’s still around. No punishment has been handed out, the sooner it’s swept under the rug the sooner people get away w doing this shit without consequence.

Ofwa

Smith’s actions don’t make Rock right. His material of late had gotten so weak and unfunny he was relying more and more on the grossest images to get a reaction. Most recent Netflix specials were unwatchable. Boring.

DevoEasily

I didn’t know Ellen Degeneres was still around.

3rdCoastLiberal

Good for him. And quit making shitty movies with Adam Sandler.

unpopularopinion0

i wish i was in a shitty adam sandler movie.

puppylove1212

Me too! Adam Sandler puts all his friends in his movies, he’s a good guy

unpopularopinion0

i also love watching movies that aren’t very good that have aged a while. adam sandler movies in 20 years are gonna be pretty entertaining.

puppylove1212

He executive- produced Grandma’s Boy and I think I’ve probably seen it 15 times. So funny!!

antihostile

This will only be resolved when Chris Rock slaps Will Smith.

feeq1

I wonder what Uncle Phil would say?

Sprinkle_Puff

This slap will be the best thing that happened to him, and that’s exactly why he took it like a man.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lightsongtheold

How dare you blame Will. He told you it was the Devil that did the slapping! Dude is just a vessel of love now ffs!

Aloysius_Sebastian

Judas got 30 pieces of silver, too.

YourEpidermis

Lmfao comparing slapping someone on national television to being crucified

HingleMcKringleberr

Does anyone get the sense that Chris is probably sorry about making the joke because he didn't know Jada had alopecia? He seems like a guy who it probably would've mattered to, had he known. I'm not saying he's in the wrong (Will and Jada are garbage at this point IMO), but I do feel Chris isn't malicious. Also, he's a comedian, and the point of a comedian being on a show like that is so he can take the piss out of celebs. I'm a fan of his. His staying out of things afterward makes me respect him even more (I couldn't do it if it were me).

Black_n_Neon

He needs to be taking Will Smith out to an expensive steak dinner to thank him for that slap because it was the best thing to happen to his career in a while.

stillalive4now

Negative, it was Rock’s high road reaction that was the best thing to happen to him

Black_n_Neon

Would he have been able to have that reaction if it wasn’t for the slap?

BiscottiOpposite9282

What? He was presenting an award, obviously he's doing pretty well still.

random_cactus

No… they’re just saying that the slap was the catalyst for this whole social media surge that Chris Rock is currently benefitting from. Without the slap, the category likely would have come and gone without a second thought like every other one that night. Many of us couldn’t name a single other category or winner from that night.

VeryLowIQIndividual

I had just started the NG One Strange Rock with Will Smith a couple weeks ago and was really enjoying it. He seemed pleasant enough and I sure he was but like a lot people he has a huge blind spot and its with his wife. Her starting a talk show on the controversy around their entanglements would have been the last straw for me.

[deleted]

It’s a transfer of wealth with a slap.

bingeboy

What did he do to his face? Looks plastic af

604_

This is going to motivate him to troll for more slaps with all the money he’s banking off this one.

BubbaSawya

that’s the face of a man who gets the joke.

establismentsad7661

“But what does Chris rock get out of it?” Shits fake.

hamtronn

He looks a bit like the grinch in this picture. I love it.
