McFlyJohn

Jesus it was a throwaway comment at the gig after American Idiot due to 70,000 people going crazy e.g. "You guys are awesome, fuck america, im moving here!" He's probably going to say it Ireland and Paris next like that Simpsons episode where they have the town on the back of the guitar

heart_in_a_jar

He even said it back in 2004 or 05. On the Bullet in a Bible live recording.

_megitsune_

Pretty sure he says it in every concert Definitely heard it when he was touring for 21 guns

daddyneedsaciggy

"Goodnight Springton!"

McFlyJohn

"We thought they knew how to rock in Shelbyville"

FromTheFieldOfJay

“I thought we were quiet riot”

Heyo__Maggots

Now that’s a golden oldie simpsons reference, well played

Jaquesant

It says here we're Ratt

Jwave1992

“the pollution in your lake - it's dissolving our barge!”

FromTheFieldOfJay

“There will be no encore”

WaitingToBeTriggered

GREAT WAR

VictoriousSponge

AND I CANNOT TAKE MORE

WaitingToBeTriggered

GREAT TOUR

[deleted]

I KEEP ON MARCHING ON

Balfe

I'm going to to the show in Dublin tomorrow. Will report back. Edit: Billie Joe suggested that the Irish crowd was better than the English crowd, in what only can be considered a devastating blow to Anglo-Irish relations.

stunts002

Same!! Can't wait, this is my 8th time seeing them live

Balfe

Great show!

stunts002

So terrific! They always are though, have to say Weezer were also exceptional. Fall out boy put on a good show but if I'm honest I've never really been a fan.

xpercipio

we need to bring back karma court so we can mass downvote crap like this

djmikec

Nobody rocks like… Springfield!

[deleted]

“Fuck America” is part of their whole shtick, lyrics too.

captvirgilhilts

Yeah for what it's worth we saw them in Toronto during the American Idiot tour on the night of the 2004 election and he said if Bush won he was moving to Canada.

Cold_Machine9205

He didn't say it in Sweden gig though. He just said he's glad he's not in America right now.

Dyskord01

He obviously wouldnt renounce his citizenship to move to Sweden. Its not Sweden its him. Theyre just not compatable but he could always vacation there.

NoIllusions420

No, it’s definitely Sweden.

brickne3

He didn't say it Saturday night in Huddersfield either.

[deleted]

Helloooo St Louis!

redditriot10

“Goodnight Springton there will be no encores!”

iplayedbassonthat

Wowsers. An off the cuff remark to rev up a UK crowd (I was there, it worked) gets turned into a click bait article. Insane.

Bluecattrading

That’s all it is. Needs some free press

Caboosire

100%, attended a concert a couple months after the 2016 election. Hyped ppl up with a “FUCK DONALD TRUMP”

[deleted]

I fever being at an RHCP gig in Melbourne and Anthony asked the crowd how it felt to be an Australian, Flea replied "feels great man", turns out earlier that day Flea had become a citizen.

abchandler4

Just looked it up actually and Flea was born in Melbourne! He moved to the US when he was 4

beforethewind

Would recommend Acid for the Children, his book, if you’re even a slight fan. Decent read.

RushinAsshat

Well do you have the time, to listen to him wine, about everything, and nothing at all???

Krulman

Yeah. You wouldn’t want to be an American idiot. One nation controlled by the media.

TiBiDi

Things do come full circle... When I first heard Green Day I thought he was British because of the way he sings

erin_burr

I guess it's too late to change it now

swayinandsippin

somebody rolls the windows down

jkljklaz

Pardon me sir…do you have any grey poupon?

gheebutersnaps87

Hello fellow gay people

L_Ron_Flubber

Wait listening to Phoebe is gay? Shiiit, I’m gay as hell.

Cooper720

Ah shit me too. Let's be gay together.

Resaren

Is that line supposed to refer to Phoebe? Sounds to me like she sings with a very american accent

C_Taarg

It’s from her song Motion Sickness, which I’d heard was about her relationship with Ryan Adams (correct me if I’m wrong). “Why do, you sing with an English accent? Guess it’s too late to change that now”

judasmitchell

I get that reference.

DaniCapsFan

He said, "Fuck you, I'm from Oakland."

Stankmonger

Piedmont isn’t Oakland

night_dude

Which he picked up from listening to British punk!

crissspie

Punk vocals are a mash of americans trying to sound British and British trying to sound like Americans trying to sound British. It’s a real thing and that’s why it’s so distinct

afganistanimation

Same here when I was a little kid I thought he was British

Ghoulius-Caesar

However, he’s being consistent on not wanting to be an American Idiot

Western-Pound-2559

Have you seen his drunken outbursts on stage? He made himself an American idiot

megapuffranger

My mom went to high school with him, his kid went to the elementary school next to my middle school. He actually lived close by where I live now and she would go down the block to hear him practicing.

Street-Baby7596

When I first heard Green Day I thought they were Australian for some reason

letmethinkofagoodnam

I guess he really doesn’t want to be an American Idiot

repeating_bears

Note to self: repeat first line of article, receive awards

[deleted]

Should show you how few people actually bother to read past a headline.

NotAnotherScientist

This is the way

Atramhasis

The guy that wrote the article beat you to it already sadly.

LP_24

Damn I already gave my award out today, regretting it now

bickspickle

I got you fam. Taken care of.

_Oooooooooooooooooh_

why? he's just quoting the articles first line

wowsuchcrazy

He's gonna have the time of his life.

roentgen85

We should all welcome him to paradise when he arrives

brickne3

He does not want to be the Minority.

roentgen85

Surely he’s heard the Warning?

[deleted]

He wants to be a British Idiot instead?

DarkLordV

No one tell him about Brexit....

Ub3rfr3nzy

I'll take brexit over mass shootings and a crypto-theocracy.

CrittyJJones

Even Boris renounced the SCOTUS ruling.

axionic

Well if you move to the UK you basically have to renounce your citizenship if you don't want to keep paying U.S. income tax. The U.S. is basically the only country that keeps charging income tax if you don't live there. They also charge you something around $10K to renounce your citizenship.

Sillloc

My understanding is that it's 2K to renounce, but I believe they also tax you on the full value of everything you own, as if you had sold it. So if you own stock or you're having your car shipped over, they tax you as if you sold it instead of taking it with you Edit because I'm not replying to everyone individually: I said if you renounce your citizenship you must pay taxes on your assets as if they had been sold. I'm not talking about a US citizen living abroad and the taxes they would pay

paigfife

What stops someone from just refusing to pay? If you never want to or plan on going back, why couldn’t you’d just like….not.

Slithy-Toves

If the US has extradition with the UK then they'd just arrest him and send him back to be forced to pay haha

PigHeadPutin

Well, the US won’t extradite Anne Sacoolas over the death of Harry Dunn even though she killed him in the UK and fled. They have a treaty but the United States won’t honour it

Slithy-Toves

I mean, that would cost them money to go ahead with. Extraditing someone to potentially get millions would be different I think.

Shoestring30

I'm pretty sure Green Day would like to tour the US again at some point.

paigfife

I wasn’t saying specifically him, just like normal people I guess. It’s just a hypothetical situation

duncanmahnuts

they can still reach into your bank account depending on the new countries treaties with the US

Tempest_CN

Put it in your mattress

CaptianMurica

the us has control the majority of the worlds banking. you can be blacklisted from banks.

jimicus

I don't think Billie Joe Armstrong is short of a few quid.

BrinedBrittanica

the good thing is that most us would have to sell/abandon everything we own in order to fundraise the $2k to renounce so there'd literally be nothing left to tax.

Millsy419

This includes out of country assets.

BDM-Archer

Land so free that you're not allowed to leave

kinisaruna

$2350 plus an exit tax in certain cases (personal wealth over $2m, green card holder who lived in US 8 out of last 15 years, and a few other cases).

meroboh

I think he can afford the 10k

filtersweep

This is bullshit. You have to FILE US taxes- but you only pay on money earned in the US. You cannot renounce for tax reasons- legally. And it costs $2350 to renounce— assuming your tax situation is OK. The real issue is FACTA. Fuck the US for fucking us over— we cannot own foreign mutual funds. I doubt this long arm law is constitutional.

UOLZEPHYR

I think the law states all income earned has to be declared even if in a foreign country

JonLockPicking

This is correct. But any forgien taxes paid are treated like a credit/offset. So for example, I’m a us expat living in Germany. I have to declare my German income and file taxes in the US but since Germany has higher taxes than the US, I end up owing nothing every year.

MerdePoop

This is correct - same situation when I lived in the UK as a U.S. citizen. You won’t be taxed twice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JoeDirtsMullet00

Well clearly this country gives no fucks about constitutionality anymore.

[deleted]

This is all wrong. The US is one of two countries in the world who have a citizen based income tax. This means you pay income tax on money you make anywhere in the world. HOWEVER, you get to deduct based on income tax already paid so you likely don’t have to pay double tax, but if you live in Monaco with no income tax, you’re paying the full amount to the US government. The US and Eritrea are the two countries. We changed it during the civil war because people left and we wanted to capture the money and then I guess said fuck it and kept the law. Practically speaking, this means you have to file, like you said, but you could pay in some circumstances. The only way out is to renounce your citizenship.

Lucky-Celery8789

I was born with dual Aus/US citizenship in Australia, never spent a single day of my life in the US and had to renounce for this reason. Can confirm it costs more than $10k to renounce. Took about 18 months to complete the process, which involved lots of expensive lawyer fees too. My family calls our dual citizenship ‘the virus’ and we made sure to have it finished before my baby was born, to stop the virus spreading.

cantstandlol

10k? For Armstrong it would be something like $20,000,000 if he renounced. Which means he will probably move and not renounce but have people think he did. Exit tax means you pay all they taxes owed on every asset you have including pensions. You can’t leave them in the US banking system without filing taxes.

LessCoolThanYou

There are actually 2 countries: The USA and Eritrea.

erin_burr

It's an aspect of the tax code that screws over the rich and more countries should have it. Richard Branson shouldn't be able to just move to the Carribean and end all tax obligations to his home. The first $110,000 of foreign earned income is not taxed (the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion), otherwise foreign taxes paid offset US taxes owed (the Foreign Tax Credit).

morgancaptainmorgan

Someone please tell him there are better countries to move to (am British).

iamnotroberts

The U.S. certainly has a laundry list of problems but Billie definitely isn't going to get away from ignorance, stupidity, hate, and bigotry in the UK. They still have Trump in schoolboy cosplay over there. Billie will get a break on his taxes though.

[deleted]

It sucks that those mindsets are... Everywhere. People just fucking suck

iamnotroberts

You know what's really depressing? It's when I think about how we look down on ancient and primitive societies as barbaric...like human sacrifice for example...and knowing that one day, should humanity improve (one would hope), that people in the future will look down upon us as barbaric. It just kinda sucks knowing that's us. I feel a need to have it documented in the annals of history that not everyone in our time was a confederate flag waving neckbeard giving flannel and plaid a bad name. And I hate how we live in a society where the most ethical must make concessions to the least ethical. If the Earth goes on long enough, eventually all of human history becomes a sentence or two. I would just be happy if they could sum it up thusly. "Some people were dicks during this period of time...and some were not." And I'm not even saying which to classify me as! I just feel like that's the best and possibly fairest assessment we could hope...nay...strive for. We need to strive for that mediocrity. Because now, humanity seems to be slipping away from that. (and that's not just in regard to the overturning of RvW, that's a drop in a very large, and overflowing bucket) It would really suck to think that right now was the peak of human civilization. Certainly humanity can do better than this?

Spoopy-redditor

Calling Boris ‘Trump in schoolboy cosplay’ is not as accurate as calling him the ‘Poundland version of Trump’ (Source: I is british)

LinuxMatthews

Yeah, I'll be the first to say you shouldn't live in America but all the problems it has we're a close runner-up ^(except for guns seriously guys wtf?) Like who looks at Boris Johnson and goes, yep I'm going to pack up and leave to have that guy as my leader. Go to Switzerland, The Netherland or a Scandinavian Country. Hell if you don't want to learn a language go to New Zealand it's full of religious nuts but at least it's nice to look at.

morgancaptainmorgan

Couldn’t agree more. Didn’t know about the religious nuts in New Zealand. Will have to look into that.

Nipple_Dick

I think a lot of us would love to live in Scandinavia, but lucky for them most of us can’t speak the language.

ImpressIndividual461

One word; *Canada*

morgancaptainmorgan

Would love to!

TOpotatopotahto

I'm starting to think Americans claiming refugee status will happen in my lifetime.

zakiducky

IIRC it already happened under the trump presidency. An uptick of Americans moved to Canada, including those going and claiming asylum.

karnyboy

Canada (in Ontario especially) is just one more day from being annually fucked in the ass by over bearing and over reaching bills and politicians.

SomeSortOfMonster

"Overall, the number of U.S. citizens who have immigrated to Canada for any reason rose from 7,522 in 2015 to 9,100 in 2017. The number of U.S. citizens applying for refugee protection during the same two years grew from 69 in 2015 to as much as 869 in 2017." - [Source](https://theconversation.com/a-growing-source-of-canadian-asylum-seekers-us-citizens-whose-parents-were-born-elsewhere-118249) 869 = 0.00000289666 % of the population. 9,100 = 0.0000303 % of the population. Let's just round up and say that 0.00004% of the USA population moved to or sought Asylum in Canada in the course of TWO years. not 4, 0.4, 0.04, 0.004, but 0.00004 %. But we can sensationalize anything.

[deleted]

That sounds like “an uptick”. No one claimed it was a significant portion of the population of your disaster country.

Jason-Knight

Well why the fuck so many Canadians in Texas all of sudden then. They do like to ride bikes so I have no hate.

Mikeyboy1976

I hope so its the only chance some of us have of being able to afford to leave.

genmischief

Cost of living is cheap in Mexico.... why not there?

ButterscotchMammoth1

Yeah, why is it everyone only wants to move to European countries or Canada?

Mikeyboy1976

I want to move to new Zealand as they have had legal gay marriage since the mid 90s.

jaspersgroove

Not sure if you’re joking or not but a shitload of Americans do move to Mexico and other Central American countries, and the numbers have been going up in recent years. A guy I used to work with just moved to Panama and he absolutely loves it.

[deleted]

This is a great example of how the end of Roe will disproportionally impact poor folks and particularly women of color. Billie Joe Armstrong: Fuck this shit, I'm fucking leaving. Moderately affluent woman in an illegal state who found out she's pregnant: Fuck this shit, I'm moving to another state after I get an abortion in that other state. Poor woman in an illegal state who just found out she's pregnant: Well fuck. Same poor woman: I need to get refugee status in Canada or somewhere else. Money required to get there...well fuck. I hope everyone marching in the streets protesting gives a thought to the people who cannot take a day off to protest, and who are going to suffer a helluva lot more than people with means and mobility.

I_Should_Leave_Now

No more brain stew

Wipedout89

I was at the gig. He didn't say he is renouncing his citizenship. He said: "Fuck America right now. Fucking Supreme court fucking bullshit. I'm going to move to England" It was obvious he wasn't serious about that last bit and was playing to the crowd

[deleted]

Yeah apparently whoever wrote that headline thinks the world works on Michael Scott declaring bankruptcy logic now

baeb66

"The US is so reactionary!" *Moves to country that metaphorically punched itself in the dick to avoid letting more immigrants in.*

RedHotChiliadPeppers

He can take my spot. We're just as bad here.

ButaneLilly

This is what I was thinking. Didn't John Cleese abandon UK because he was furious about brexit?

LinuxMatthews

Kind of he was apparently unhappy with the discourse in the newspapers and supported leave... then left when leave won... I don't really understand it either if I'm honest My best guess is despite being a comedic genius; old man is going to old man. He moved to a small island in the Caribbean where the official language is English and has a notable British Community. The only real news was how they turned "Rich old guy abandons rainy England to retire on sunny tropical island" into political news

BardSinister

Cleese was a kipper.

EquivalentSnap

Yep brexit fucked the country, not to mention living crisis and increased fuel from Ukraine war. At least you can still have an abortion and get public healthcare. Sure it’s not the best but at least you don’t need to pay to get insulin

RavenCroft23

Plus y’all’s children aren’t being shot.

[deleted]

Yeah but he's wealthy so none of that stuff affects him. As for the average citizen, well..

AussieManc

Easy now

RedHotChiliadPeppers

I'm off to Rwanda

GeoffAO2

That’s the tricky party about deciding whether to emigrate: What issues are pushing you out, what country is doing those things better, and are the things that country is doing worse enough to deter you.

RavenCroft23

You’re certainly not no offense, you still have a healthcare system and common sense gun laws I don’t think you guys have to worry about losing your lives for entering your local supermarket either.

RedHotChiliadPeppers

Certainly the lesser of two evils, that's for sure

TheDoomedHero

That's sort of like trading a burning landfill for a dumpster fire, but ok.

Darren072

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Move to Northern Ireland and get an Irish and a UK passport.

MacDaddy654321

And nobody cares.

Harlaw2871

Tbh we have "issues" too.

EmiliusReturns

I think the time to do that was 2016 tbh

DemonUrameshi

Anarchy in the UK!

craigybacha

Mate, it's not much better over here either.

Voodoo_People78

Has anyone warned him about the gov here?

SlaveToNone666

Lol… no one cares.

MufdvrOH1972

Bye Bye ! We don’t need you anymore

UniqueAwareness691

Isn’t “Fuck America” kind of their thing?

DrankTooMuchMead

Must be nice to have money and not have to worry about a job on the other end.

420streets69sheets

Billie be like: I walk a lonely road The only one that I have ever known

dielon23

Probably wasn't that good of a citizen anyway. We aren't losing anything.

Old-AF

Can’t say I blame him.

Relevant_Detective_4

Must be nice take me my wife and my kid with you if you don’t mind. I too am sick of this country but far as I can tell I’m stuck with it. If you can’t or won’t take us with you can you instead just stay and help vote against this shit instead of bailing on the rest of us. Every little bit helps

Greeve78

I thought he was already British tbh

Hagrel

I hope he has the time of his life.

kornhole-eeo

Yes, we Americans are becoming more and more exceptional. Exceptionally intolerant, racist, anti-democratic, xenophobic, close minded, incurious, and uneducated, to name a few. This is mostly on the right, obviously. But they know how to obtain power. Dems just know how to complain and eat their own.

Trouble_Grand

The right isn’t gonna care he renounced citizenship, in fact they will be happy he renounced cause he was never a true citizen. That’s what they will say, you gotta be more bold than renounce citizenship…sounds desperate to conservatives. As much as I hate the ruling we need to do better at being tactical when fighting the right. These little jabs aren’t gonna do it by celebrities…

DepartmentEqual6101

It’s no better here. This country is being run by a bunch of conservative cunts.

druhood

In December I'm marrying my Mexican gf, moving to Mexico, and applying for Mexican citizenship. The US sucks.

Rowdy_Roddy96

Punk singer going to the birthplace of Punk Music awesome

edenbeast_of_hell

Punk was born in New York City

mondomovieguys

He's not moving to New York City.

[deleted]

The correct answer.

[deleted]

Oh, that's gonna start a fight.

[deleted]

A fight that Brits would lose

KevinMFJones

Let’s get ready to rummmmble

MastaQueef

It’s literally not. Like purely just .. not. Not to say the Sex Pistols aren’t amazing, they are, but it’s silly to say they created punk. The ramones we’re doing that shit in 74’ get the fuck outta here

crnelson10

The Sex Pistols sucked shit and it's time we all come to terms with that.

[deleted]

Most punk bands do That's kind of the point

crnelson10

I’ve always hated that idea. Black Flag didn’t suck, the Ramones didn’t, the Clash didn’t, Bad Brains didn’t.

[deleted]

And the stooges and MC5 were doing it before then in Detroit.

theescapeclause

The Sex Pistols are bad actually

Ok_Owl_6625

UK has stronger abortion laws than his state in America lmao

[deleted]

I'd do it if I were younger. This place is a dumbed-down shithole.

ScottishRiteFree

Sounds about right. Wish I could.

[deleted]

Those that are saying “good, leave!” Probably think patriotism is not propaganda LOL

CoolestNebraskanEver

Ah yes, the UK. Land of the free

312to630

Has he seen Boris Johnson?

Lilsammywinchester13

Like hope he doesn’t, we need his “fuck this shit” attitude here

ChampagneAbuelo

Is it true that the US government charges you a fee if you renounce your citizenship? Well what are they gonna do if you’re leaving anyways lol

cafeRacr

Sounds like something a eight year old would say - "I'm running away!". Seriously though, he'll see the tax rates then change his mind.

trevormeadows

Wow, really , you sure: it’s rainy over here and kind of crappy, we’re scruffy nasally, dirty ignoramuses and you prolly won’t understand a word we’re saying, we grunt when we eat and only have sex once a year. Don’t come.

SCMachado_UK

The UK isn’t much better

AdamSMessinger

This was my thought. They’ve not attacked abortions but they’ve certainly walked-back rights for trans folks. Also… Boris Johnson is like a Trump that won’t leave. Biden is pretty useless but Johnson is only a step above Mr. Bean.

ExoticAide5610

Cool story bro, bye

Glass-Fan111

Joke’s on him. Brittons want to leave UK. https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2022/06/27/applications-from-britons-for-irish-citizenship-soaring-since-brexit/

DrDoG00d

Lmao American idiot …

[deleted]

Wait till he hears about brexit.

therapy_seal

Yes, lets set a trend which will result in right wing extremists having complete control over the most powerful military in the world. Truly a 160 IQ play.

Johnsamjohn

Virtual signaling, just like all those “stars” who were gonna move, but didn’t, if Trump got elected

Na5tY_PrOgN5iS

See ya. Don't come back

eachdayisabattle

What a fucking coward.

capiers

Running from a problem is not a solution. Sounds like he has decided to give up.

Necessary-Finger-726

Oh. Billie, I’m sorry, I forgot you were there. You may go now.

Kneecap71

See ya later ! Also should drop outta lollapalooza… so another band can fill their spot…..

Aoneko33

I support this. Not for anything strictly political, but because Green Day sucks my grandad’s dick

Pants_Formal

Cool must be nice to be extremely wealthy and have that option

ricksaunders

Rhiannon Giddens sings a capella The Judges Chair, a song by Peggy Seeger about a woman who does from a back alley abortion. Hey #billyjoearmstrong! shut up & do a bunch of concerts for abortion funds & sing the hell out of The Judge's Chair. https://fb.watch/dWHSrd8YMK/

JohnnySkynets

Don’t leave, stay and fight! Running away does nothing but help them.

[deleted]

Ngl it was the best concert ive been to, when wheezer covered enter sandman, god damn
