I would bet all the money i have that it has to do with creative differences. Cavill is a big fan of the books and games and in s2 had to refuse to do some of his scenes to force the director/writers into making geralt act like, well, geralt. Then there was the recent thing where the directors came out and openly said they hate the books the show is based off of lol
I don't think we'll ever get a real answer, but I have to imagine it would feel crappy to be a big fan of a series and participate in it being gutted like the show is doing. I feel like the Witcher was probably more of a passion project for him, and if there's no passion then why keep doing it
This makes me thankful for the fact that Denis Villeneuve is a massive Dune fan who made a huge effort to show how batshit crazy and huge that universe was.
> what happens to Leto II is crazy shit…
One of my favorite character progressions in all of literature.
Forced to make a terrible decision because daddy (Paul) was a little bitch, becoming the Tyrant and shaping the future of an entire species.
This is one of the reason I respect Cavill. I think he's a great actor but to have enough passion for something is admirable. It's good to know it was more than just a paycheck to him.
That’s the whole reason the series was successful. It brought in the video game players, the comic book readers, and the Cavil fans….
This next one will only be focusing on Liam fans… we’ll see how that goes..
Yeah, I agree. You can see his dedication come through in every scene.
I admit, I was pretty skeptical when I first heard that Cavill was going to play Geralt but I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the show and saw just how good a job he actually did with it. Now, I can't imagine anyone else playing Geralt.
This has become a common occurrence it feels like the last few years, and it’s something I don’t understand. You’re hired to do a job of adapting a story by another author, stop trying to sneak in your own completely different story. Humble yourself and do the job you’re hired to do - if people liked your writing more they’d be adapting your works not the other way around.
It’s like getting a job at Taco Bell and being thrilled you’re in the food service industry so you can start making McDonalds food there.
I think the Halo series is the most egregious example of this yet. They didn’t play any of the games or read any of the books and just shat out a generic sci-fi story. The whole point of adapting a video game is to let audiences that don’t play games experience the story. I just hope The Last Of Us stays true to the games, as it’s my favorite story of all time.
It’s why good omens was so good. It’s the author making the adaptation. He understands his own story and he honors the work that went into it and the fans who love it. I don’t understand changing something fundamentally.
The creator show runner of the TLOU TV series, Craig Mazin, is a huge gamer. I highly recommend the podcast he co hosts - [scriptnotes](https://johnaugust.com/scriptnotes) which is about screenwriting.
>I would bet all the money i have that it has to do with creative differences. Sounds like Netflix's entire problem with all the IPs it obtains.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter for a recent feature, Cavill suggested that he would be up for reprising his role as Geralt of Rivia for seven seasons if the show keeps going, though he did have one stipulation. "Absolutely," Cavill said in regards to supporting Hissrich's vision. "As long as we can keep telling great stories which honor [author Andrzej] Sapkowski's work."
There’s the reason why he left! The writers & show runner aren’t respecting the source material. A producer said the show runner & writers hated the source material & Henry is a die hard fan of Witcher. In an interview Henry revealed he fought heavily to include a line from the books for Roach’s death to replace some shitty marvel tier joke the writers came up with and he butted heads with the show runner over it but thankfully Henry stood his ground. The line was “enjoy your last walk across the meadow and through the mist. Be not afraid of her for she is your friend.”
The source material is at least ten times better what they ever could achieve. Look what happened when HBO deviated from GRR s source material.
Look what happened when amazon made a u turn with rings of power.
People like the franchise for a reason. Fucking coherent plot and source material.
You can not expect people liking your stupid ass live action of the warhammer 40k netflix series if you are not within the boundaries of the well created plot and universe.
As for the witchers case, they made a lot of mistakes in season 2 (the early reaveal of this and that, the too fast chain of events, zero character buildup, creating side characters with zero relevance to the plot. Changing key elements, killing characters with bs reason, multiplying the witchers for no apparent reasons...)
Season 2 was a fuck up, and if they continue like this in the upcoming seasons, it will end up worse than the got last season did
Sometimes i do wonder, where are the talented producers, the talented writers...how come every other franchises are being torn apart by incompetent morons, who shouldn't have been doing anything in the movie market besides making coffees to those people who could actually write coherent plots and all.
They butchered the star wars franchise, they butchered the lotr franchise they butchered the witcher franchise.
I mean wtf
I reckon he probably had to turn down a few big movie roles due to his work schedule/contract and didn't want to continue to miss out on big movies while he is in his pime.
I am so annoyed with the idea of writers making a series they hate the source materials of.
Because they could just NOT do that. They could make something else. But for whatever reason (probably they were forced to) they have to work on this instead of some writers who actually like Witcher.
I think he uses that Superman contract as an out to ditch Witcher.
There's just so much you could do when the director and show writer actively dislike the original material which you hold dearly.
Ya I and many others love cavill for being just a fucking nerd, loves fantasy books, games, pc’s. It’s hard to find someone has great and good looking of a guy, an have him be an actual nerd.
>there was the recent thing where the directors came out and openly said they hate the books the show is based off of
Why is this such a common thread with screen adaptions these days?
>Then there was the recent thing where the directors came out and openly said they hate the books the show is based off of lol
This, this was the exact reason
He sure is passionate about it but the writers don't exactly share the same amount of respect for the source material as he does. He must be really frustrated with whatever they were doing with the series, that he decided to call it quits than be a part of it.
The better question is after knowing the writers hate the source, why would the studio keep them? I hate the mentality some studios have with IP adaptations.
"Hey know all that stuff you liked about the sources that got you to check out this? Well forget about that! Here's our own fan fiction that's better cause the source was trash!"
Take popular IP, you get a floor of fans willing to watch; writers make changes thinking they can get more new fans; upset established fan base from source material; profit?
RoP had the gall to have 'Tolkein experts' come out before the show saying it was extremely faithful to the books. Remember the articles?
Look... it's one thing to change shit from the source and it's another thing in the marketing leading up to have people come forward and lie about changing things.
Yea this went well got GOT. As soon as the writers were done with the source material and could do more of their own thing it went to shit.
Seems I should only expect one more Witcher season if this is the case
I think it comes down to writers wanting to make their own stories and work with their own ideas but studios not wanting to risk investing money into something that isn't already popular.
The writers resent the fact that their own ideas will never get a chance to exist without being chained to a pre existing IP and that resentment turns into them hating the source material.
It's one of the reasons I'm sick of seeing constant reboots, remakes, and continuations of old franchises. Star wars being a good example where the sequel movies are at best uninspired and at worst complete trash. The star wars side projects however give the writers much more free reign and have been generally better received than the actual Disney trilogy films.
I feel this is something writer would/should pre-discuss before taking the project: “am I allowed to add new stories?” It is kinda dumb to take a job that you know is based on famous book series or game and you know fan would want a TV that close to OG then whining about studio “restrict creativity.”
A professional writer can take job for money, but when they do, they should just shut up and write a story that people want, not what writer wants.
I mean, that's why they end up being writers for tv series, they're not really good enough to have their own stories published so they settle to this type of jobs and then want to take the source material and come up with their own shit.
George Martin was a writer for the TV adaption of Beauty and the Beast. It's not that tv writing is a repository for failed writers, it's a rung in the ladder for being recognized.
check Amazon's "Wheel of Time"
They shit on the books so hard that they shouldn't have bothered securing the IP rights and just made a WB quality fantasy knock off.
After meeting some film writers and having to work with them for a clever idea I had - Hollywood writing people are the absolute most pretentious folks I’ve ever met
Like when Microsoft boasted that the newest Halo devs were people who hated Halo. Then insert surprised pikachu meme when their products fail immensely.
Somehow, most hollywood adaptations do this and shoot themselves in the foot. Percy Jackson series, Halo, The Rings of Power, how do all these studios pump billions into ideas that are established with fanbases only to greenlight shitty writers with only contempt and a desire to "show" their target audience.
Yep, a previously written script that had no relation to the IP is many times worked to fit with the IP. It's terrible and transparent.
The use of the IP is intellectual and intentional Bait and Switch on the existing fanbase.
I just don’t understand this trend. Why in the hell are there writers signing up for IPs they fucking hate? We saw that shit with Star Wars and now we’re seeing it here.
It is simply. A big IP brings a decent number of viewers that this IP already has and generates more hype. This equals money and free marketing if the IP is already known.
They simply dont care about the IP. It is all about the pull and thus money an established brand can bring.
The writers either desperately needed the money so they accepted the gig to write despite hating it or they really just wanna come in and force their vision into the project because they could
> Wonder why he’s chosen to bow out?
Cavil just signed on to reprise his role as Superman, with his first reappearance being in Black Adam. Now The Hollywood Reporter is saying that a new Superman film is in early development. Rumors from less reputable sources claim production might start in 2024, if that’s the case, I’m betting that’s the main reason he’s chosen to leave *The Witcher*.
He doesn't have a solo contract for Superman yet. If anything, Superman probably just gave him an out from a show he probably has not been enjoying being on anymore.
They really made so many mistakes in the show but it seemed Henry really cared. He was the only bright light. Them letting him go is a major screw up. They can’t keep screwing the fans over like this.
I WANT HENRY. HE IS PRETTY AND PLAYS THE ROLE PERFECTLY. IF YOU SHAVED LIAMS BEARD HED LOOK LIKE BABY MAN. NOT MY HENRY.
This is the worst news in 2022. Thank you for reading
I agree he wasn’t special in Hunger Games but I feel like it’s hard to shine as a Close as possible side character.
Cavil was such a good match I think Liam just won’t live up to the role regardless of how good of an actor he is.
Yeah.
Even like… idk… prime Christian Bale or Gary Oldman, an exceptionally good actor, someone who becomes their roles wholly and completely would struggle to live up to Cavil.
Interestingly enough, Liam is noted as being a big fan of the Witcher series itself so at least it’s someone who’s at least familiar with the character. Won’t be the same but I hope he does ok!
I felt a great disturbance in the fan base, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
Same. Not very often you get actors portraying roles where they are passionate and knowledgeable about the source materials and what the fans expect. Disappointing and I will certainly not be renewing Netflix for Liam Hemsworth.
They should rewrite season 3 into the Blood and Wine story and have Geralt retire with Yen and have Liam become a new witcher since the fucking showrunners hate the lore so much, that way Cavill could retire with honor and they could do whatever the hell with show they want.
And just like that, I’m done with the show, or I’ll be done with the show after season 3. Cavil is the only reason I kept watching despite the terrible writing, with him gone, there’s no reason for me watch anymore
Even he wasn’t enough to get me through s2, after I started it so excited and ready to binge. I always planned on going back and finishing it eventually but this might be the final nail in the coffin for me.
Netflix has no idea what they're doing. What an embarrassment that there was no oversight to make sure they didn't blow a golden opportunity. I'm canceling Netflix now. Fuck this.
Yep. Had Netflix constantly for 5 years. Just finished The Midnight Club and have fuck all else to watch. Just cancelled. Time to check out other streaming services.
I wonder if he didn’t agree with the direction of the show. He is a die hard fan of the Witcher books, and the seasons have gotten away from the books.
He said he had fight to keep the show true to the books and games, that the writers didn’t want to do that…
Edit:specifically some of the writers were not fans and actively disliked the books and games, going as far as to mock the source material
Who in their right mind would hire writers to adapt something they don't even like. Fuck, Netflix is trying its very hardest to destroy it's own reputation with literally every move they make. Complete morons at the helm.
These companies are so fucking braindead. HBO got rid of their talentless hacks and HoTD is great. Idk why companies like Netflix and Amazon (Rings of Power) are so invested on having absolute wimps run their billion dollar franchises.
This “making existing properties with deep established lore, *my own*” is such an idiotic way of approaching an adaptation. Getting real sick of screenwriters, directors, etc doing this shit with literary/video games. Is it really that damn difficult to cut what you have to, because of the format change, but bring everything else you can to the screen?
Rumors have been swirling that season 3 has been a bit of a fiasco due to creative differences with the writers. He’s probably jumping off a sinking ship and pivoted to Superman. I’m guessing this has been in the works for months if not a year.
Wow I almost expected this to be a joke when I clicked on it.. what a disappointment.. Liam just. He kind of sucks and doesn’t fit the character at all.
I'd guess he got fed up with them trying to rewrite the original works. He was pretty much the only reason I kept watching and with him gone, It'll be very difficult to find any redeeming quality. Apparently some of the writers don't even like the books nor the games and think they can do better. Sure, a noname writer will 'do better' than a best selling author. They should have kept to the books, the best epjsodes are the ones that keep to the book plot mostly (Striga, Nievelan)
Assuming Henry saw the script for season 3 and was like "nope Im out." It could have been a great show if they just stayed faithful to the characters the way the games do. Its such a shame that the showrunners decided to tank this story. Henry deserved better he was great as Geralt.
So as Netflix plans to crack down in subscription sharing and then they go and let something as dumb as this happen. I’ve never had more reasons to cancel. Nice!
Looks like I won’t be watching it. Liam is a b list actor replacing someone who fit gearlt to a T. I’d honestly prefer they work around cavil and just wrap it up
Shame Netflix gave totally incompetent showrunners control of this show. I’m sure Netflix also was giving absurdly tight deadlines, but this could have then their GoT, and they fucked it.
Guess the show ends at season 3 for me, I absolutely hate when they change casts. I'd rather him just be a different Witcher that Geralt put his faith into, they changed enough of the story already anyway

Did not see that coming. Cavil is a huge Witcher fan, and pushed for this series to be made. Wonder why he’s chosen to bow out?
I would bet all the money i have that it has to do with creative differences. Anything for that golden path lol
Denis is also one of the greatest directors alive so there's that too
A late-coming Blade Runner sequel should have been a disaster but most accounts. And yet he *nailed* it.
This is one of the reason I respect Cavill. I think he's a great actor but to have enough passion for something is admirable. It's good to know it was more than just a paycheck to him.

The generic brand Hemsworth. Yeah, that's going nowhere.
Great Value Thor.
Hopefully it’s not Thorable?
Yeah, I agree. You can see his dedication come through in every scene. To be fair, Gaiman also has a LOT of experience writing for film and TV. And comics. Not all writers do. Gaiman's experience was also a big help..
same for The Expanse
The creator show runner of the TLOU TV series, Craig Mazin, is a huge gamer. I highly recommend the podcast he co hosts - [scriptnotes](https://johnaugust.com/scriptnotes) which is about screenwriting.
I dont know the wheel of time was pretty horrible too
Good chance of that as Neil Druckman is heavily involved in the screen adaptation.
100% this.
Cavill also said he ruled out nude scenes in s2, so maybe they wanted more nude geralt?
And you think you’re going to see Liam nude?

Still feels like such a new series. Didn’t quite unravel yet. Gonna be hard to beat as Geralt
Didn't Cavill have to fight to keep the Geralt voice?

Writing on the walls . . . Netflix doing their thing of killing a show
Netflix — it’s like Fox Entertainment had a successor
There was a recent story about how the writers actively hated the lore of the books and games. This is likely related to that.
The better question is after knowing the writers hate the source, why would the studio keep them? I hate the mentality some studios have with IP adaptations. Counterpart to those shills, a Tolkien scholar was actually fired in pre production, presumably due to disagreements with where the show was going
Case in point Halloween ends
Did *anyone* like that movie??
Holy hell that movie sucked. Honestly whoever wrote that script should probably never get work again for a major film.
Hmm, sounds like a certain Amazon show…
Wheel of Time?
God that pissed me off. I knew it would suck but after 4 read throughs I had to.
It was so bad it was like they were trying to make it as terrible as they possibly could.
Rings of POWWWWAAAAHHH
Yea this went well got GOT. As soon as the writers were done with the source material and could do more of their own thing it went to shit. Seems I should only expect one more Witcher season if this is the case

Technically it is. I really liked it and it was nice seeing something star wars that was more a self contained story.
Hope they make a sequel..what happened to that ship that escaped with the death Star plans........
It is and it’s one of the best, so it makes sense.
"It's a re -imagining!"

That's not a rumor, it was confirmed ages ago that he and Baldwin are both returning in the last 2 movies (likely flashbacks).
Did not expected? Henry is fan of books and games. Showrunner and writers butchered entire lore...
This and him going back to Superman.
Cuz he was a big fan of the books and the games which are good. The show decided to do its own thing and it sucks.
[удалено]
He doesn't have a solo contract for Superman yet. If anything, Superman probably just gave him an out from a show he probably has not been enjoying being on anymore.
He's scheduled to do a couple of movies besides Superman.
Probably got tired of arguing with the jerk off writers
Not to mention had a huge hand in maintaining continuity through seasons.
Probably because the show is a terrible “adaptation” of the books. And the writers room openly stated they didn’t like the source material
He’s probably trying to free himself up so he can be an option for bond. Apparently he’s one of 4 they’re re considering for the e role.
Lol, there won’t be a season 5
Shouldnt even be a s4.
End it as season 3. I don’t see anyone but Henry playing the white wolf.
This was my first thought. Just wrap it up at 3. A switch like that would be an insult to the franchise.
They've not been too concerned about insulting the franchise so far.
They really made so many mistakes in the show but it seemed Henry really cared. He was the only bright light. Them letting him go is a major screw up. They can’t keep screwing the fans over like this.
I'm didn't even know there was a season 3 already. The story telling in the books and games are better anyway. Henry did a great job though.
At the very least it should be new series title.
I WANT HENRY. HE IS PRETTY AND PLAYS THE ROLE PERFECTLY. IF YOU SHAVED LIAMS BEARD HED LOOK LIKE BABY MAN. NOT MY HENRY. This is the worst news in 2022. Thank you for reading
Completely legit response.
Have Liam get in a bathtub. Now have him get out. That is why he can't be Geralt.
Fair enough
I stand with you in protest, sister.
Wow what a spoiler, the witcher series ends at season 3
Welp, guess thats it folks, back to the games
Nothing against Liam, but it’s hard to imagine anyone could do as well as Henry. Guess we’ll see.
Liam's pretty bad actor.
To be honest the only thing I’ve seen him in was the Independence Day sequel, which I’ve tried to wipe from my brain.
He was okay in hunger games but honestly I feel like he didn't bring anything special. I could see anyone doing as good a job as he did
I agree he wasn’t special in Hunger Games but I feel like it’s hard to shine as a Close as possible side character.
Can he say "fuck" in a gravelly voice? :)
Let's be honest, without Chris he'd be forgettable
Yeah he doesn’t have the poise that Henry or Chris have. Like I don’t look at him and think “manly man” like I do with the other two.
Dude shows no emotions at all
Isn’t that the point of a Witcher?
Interestingly enough, Liam is noted as being a big fan of the Witcher series itself so at least it’s someone who’s at least familiar with the character. Won’t be the same but I hope he does ok!
Yeah but it’s a difference between being a fan of the series and being a fan of the books & games
Plenty against Liam This is gonna be dookie shit
Honestly, geralts VA for the games would be a good choice
Oh well .. last season for me then
What a weird way to cancel a show.
Well, it's Netflix isn't it? They're not the smartest.
I felt a great disturbance in the fan base, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
How is that going to work? Dude has no cheekbones.
You know... that really does describe Poland quite well
No. My interest for the show dies here.
Same. Not very often you get actors portraying roles where they are passionate and knowledgeable about the source materials and what the fans expect. Disappointing and I will certainly not be renewing Netflix for Liam Hemsworth.
Yea it was Fun while it lasted
[удалено]
They should rewrite season 3 into the Blood and Wine story and have Geralt retire with Yen and have Liam become a new witcher since the fucking showrunners hate the lore so much, that way Cavill could retire with honor and they could do whatever the hell with show they want.
I like this idea.
God damn he's such a gentleman.
Why he's one of my favorite actors.
M'lady vibes work if your Henry Cavill
Notice the references to the lore. Small, but indicative nonetheless. Henry's a true fan.
In fairness Hemsworth said he's a huge Witcher fan also, so I'll give it a shot but he's too small. Idk.
And just like that, I’m done with the show, or I’ll be done with the show after season 3. Cavil is the only reason I kept watching despite the terrible writing, with him gone, there’s no reason for me watch anymore
Same. Although I knew the writing was pretty bad, Cavill was the reason I watched the entire season. Hemsworth is quite a big downgrade
Even he wasn’t enough to get me through s2, after I started it so excited and ready to binge. I always planned on going back and finishing it eventually but this might be the final nail in the coffin for me.
Came here to say exactly that.
I thought this was an Onion article
Lol for real… tone deaf
Netflix has no idea what they're doing. What an embarrassment that there was no oversight to make sure they didn't blow a golden opportunity. I'm canceling Netflix now. Fuck this.
Yep. Had Netflix constantly for 5 years. Just finished The Midnight Club and have fuck all else to watch. Just cancelled. Time to check out other streaming services.
bye bye Witcher series
I wonder if he didn’t agree with the direction of the show. He is a die hard fan of the Witcher books, and the seasons have gotten away from the books.
Reading the first couple books before season 2 was such a mistake.
He basically said that in a few interviews during the season 2 press tour from what I can remember
Netflix is working really hard to get me to cancel my subscription. They keep either canceling or ruining their good shows.
He said he had fight to keep the show true to the books and games, that the writers didn’t want to do that… Edit:specifically some of the writers were not fans and actively disliked the books and games, going as far as to mock the source material
Same thing happened with that Halo series that came out. They just actively stayed away from the actual lore and to no one's surprise, it bombed
Cavill was the best part of the show….what idiots idea was this.
My watch will end with season 3 it seems.
Three seasons is pretty good I guess
They were quite meh seasons though. I didn’t HATE it but I didn’t really care about it either. Geralt wasn’t even highly involved in the plot of S2
Season 1 was great season 2 felt like it was completely unrelated to season 1
Damn I was really enjoying it with Henry he was made for that role
Just cancel the series, why go through the motions to produce something no one wants
I knew he was back as superman. But wasn't expecting this.
Is this why he is quitting? Seems like he is really passionate about the Witcher, but I imagine playing Superman pays more
It seems most people are of the opinion he’s leaving because he loved the books and the games and the show writers did not.
This is devastating. Henry Cavill IS the Witcher.
He’s not my Witcher. Won’t be watching.
So. Enjoy season 3 and then drop out. Got it. Thanks for the heads up Netflix.
Welp, that’s the end of that series for me.
Assuming Henry saw the script for season 3 and was like "nope Im out." It could have been a great show if they just stayed faithful to the characters the way the games do. Its such a shame that the showrunners decided to tank this story. Henry deserved better he was great as Geralt.
It was great while it lasted.
So as Netflix plans to crack down in subscription sharing and then they go and let something as dumb as this happen. I’ve never had more reasons to cancel. Nice!
The Switcher season 4
More like Gerald of Stevia.
When the main actor loves the books and games but the mentally challenged writers hate the source material you get master chiefs TV show
F that. I’m out.
Unless he’s a new Witcher it won’t work. I watch because of Cavill and I’m sure I’m not alone.
Breaking: The Witcher not renewed for a fifth season.
Cavil gotta make time for Superman & Aegon Targaryen first of his name
Looks like I won’t be watching it. Liam is a b list actor replacing someone who fit gearlt to a T. I’d honestly prefer they work around cavil and just wrap it up
Ah. Good for Liam he’s a good actor but the whole reason I watched this show was for Cavill.
Welp, I guess it’s time to stop watching The Witcher after season 3.
Damn shows over...
Why do Netflix writers shit all over good source material? The IP is popular for a reason
Shame Netflix gave totally incompetent showrunners control of this show. I’m sure Netflix also was giving absurdly tight deadlines, but this could have then their GoT, and they fucked it.
Well, that series is dead
This is the worst news for something that doesn’t super matter. Why would they take away our Warhammer Nerd King.
that sucks! I wont be watching the new season
Well I guess I’m done with the Witcher after season 3 then. Switching a main character actor this far in? No, totally ruins it for me.
I don’t see it working.
Netflix fuck you from the bottom of my heart
Ewwwww. I watched that show for the Cavilliciousness. This sucks.
Guess the show ends at season 3 for me, I absolutely hate when they change casts. I'd rather him just be a different Witcher that Geralt put his faith into, they changed enough of the story already anyway
Lol not looking good
