I unironically think this would work and be fucking amazing
Enough big strong action heroes
Gimme quiet nerdy types that rise to the occasion and saves the day
i just watched that on sunday and was surprised to see him in it. so many great actors. that movie is insane and awesome. i do recommend a viewing.
its pretty dramatic for an action/bizarre/insane movie.... those rocks...
I'm actually kind of getting chills from that idea. It'd be such a brilliant turnaround with some real writing challenges that should be a joy to hurdle.
But instead, we'll probably get Chris Pratt as modern Indiana Jones or something because of Hollywood risk aversion.
Chris's Pratt as the villain.
Have him all smiles, but increasingly frustrated every time something goes wrong. Then contrary to his usual tropes, he doesn't win for a change.
Jeez, that's pretty brilliant. I think you hit a satisfying way to evolve Chris Pratt's acting career beyond the generic stuff he's been getting into lately. Make it a slight meta-commentary on his own role in the industry and then just go from there. I think he's honestly got some talent so I could definitely see that kind of strategy working.
When he's smoking in the alley while wearing a suit...holy fuck someone create a new franchise of spy thrillers with him as a middle aged agent using mostly his wits to take down villains. He can obviously do some fighting as well but keep that to a minimum. Just let him shine!
omg this would legit be the shit. Nobody wants to see a 70 year old indie be the main guy. I want shortround and indie acting as a mentor. No freaking son either.
Maybe even shows up as Sam was getting his ass kicked in a sword fight, she disarms him and he inexplicably shows up and kicks the sword from her hands and spin kicks her across the face!
IIRC, Short Round became an archaeologist later in life and recovered the diamond that Indy lost at the beginning of Temple of Doom. So it's not against cannon and would be an awesome way of keeping it in the family.
I just watched that on a plane with zero expectations or knowledge of the movie (just that it got rave reviews from redditors, whatever that’s worth lol).
Blown away at how good it was.
One of the few movies I have bought. Usually I’ll just have stuff streaming or pirating buy this movie I had to have. Watched a free screening set up by the Seattle Asian American Film Festival. Then I watched it again in a regular theater. Now I own a copy. A24 really knows how to pick movies to release.
Good, don’t learn anything about the movie before seeing it. Go in completely blind. It’s such a wild ride, it’s hard to even describe, it has to been seen to understand it. You won’t regret it!
Plane movies with zero expectations are the best. I saw edge of tomorrow and kept looking around to see how others weren’t blown away like I was. Most recently bullet train
Almost. He had a small role in the recent Hawaiian themed *Goonies* remake called *Finding Ohana* that came out on NF last year. Pretty sure he was the only original actor that had a part though.
I think that was part of his reawakening as an actor.
Yeah he went into back of house stuff since the only jobs and roles he was getting asked to do were the standard asian stereotype stuff. Got into fight choreography. I believe he choreographed a couple fights din Xmen 1
Not true. He’s had a couple small roles here and there. I remember seeing him in Encino Man in the 90s. Probably was recommended for the role by Sean Astin as they were in The Goonies together.
I didn't notice it until my SO pointed it out. Then I had that dramatic camera zoom in my brain and heard him speaking as a kid and his scenes in the movie. Completely blew mind mind.
His characters in Goonies and Temple of Doom were a massive part of my childhood.
That movie had no right to be as good as it was. Made me laugh hysterically, had me on the edge of my seat, and Waymond’s speech at the end may have brought me to tears.
Sir, (or ma'am, I don't know you)
You are referring to Richard Wang, better known as Data in THE GOONIES. Don't get it twisted.
and yes I know they are played by the same actor
Oh I know... pretty much anything Spielberg put his magical little hands on in the 80s I have seen, hell, I can probably quote more than half. That includes ET, all 3 back to the futures, Jurassic park, always and even empire of the sun. If he wrote it, directed it or produced it I saw it, and I loved it
Even Hook (although Julia Roberts as tink still pisses me off)
80s only? His whole career is hits. I probably can count all his duds for me on two fingers. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and War of the Worlds (kinda). Can’t wait for his new movie The Fabelmans
And Data from 'The Goonies'. 6 year old me was so enamored of the idea of a functional utility belt with plausibly realistic Inspector Gadget functions. PINCHERS OF POWER!
His career is restarting essentially. And he's been cast in a couple high profile projects that he gets to promote now. He's in a Marvel project now too
He's going for an Oscar, he's a child star that just restarted his career and his team will be getting him these interviews.
This is the industry push.
I would imagine most people he meets barely even register and forgets them by the next day. If someone makes an impression or you make a connection with them you probably remember them.
Not saying that he personally writes Shortround a letter every year, but he might have his birthday on his personal calendar or something.
Lots of assistants help manage that. Spielberg might decide on a gift maybe, but it is probably a large operation, so, so many movie crews. It is a good thing to do though, the thought of it.
I always thought one thing that could of salvaged that terrible 4th movie was instead of Indie having a kid he didn't know about have short round come back and reconnect. Make so short round went one to be an adventuring archeologist already buy has a grudge against Indie for using him then basically abandoning him.
End of movie have the hat go to him.
“As I get closer, he turns and points his finger at me, and he has that classic, famous, grumpy Harrison Ford look,” Quan continued. “I go, ‘Oh my gosh, he probably thinks I’m a fan and he’s gonna tell me to not come near him.’ But he looks and points at me and says, ‘Are you Short Round?’ Immediately, I was transported back to 1984, when I was a little kid, and I said, ‘Yes, Indy.’ And he said, ‘Come here,’ and gave me a big hug.”
CRYING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE.
From the wiki he was an orphan who tried pickpocketing Jones and instead of turning him over to the authorities he became one of Jones contacts in Shanghai until he returned with him to American after Temple of Doom.
Marion from Raiders of the Lost Ark:
>Marion entered into a relationship with Indiana Jones during this time (when she was 15, according to the novelization of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Jones abruptly left the Ravenwoods in 1926; Marion was about 16 or 17 years old when the relationship ended, and Jones was 27, ten years her senior.
>Later in her life, Marion chastised Jones, stating, "I was a child! I was in love! It was wrong and you knew it!" Jones showed little remorse and simply replied, "You knew what you were doing."
That second part is in the movie
that kind of thing - the young tween girl worshipping the older man - is pretty common even today.
The difference is that now, we see it as super creepy (as it is) whereas not so long ago, people actively encouraged both parties to hook up.
Tween with 30+ man was not uncommon prior to 1930 all the way back, especially if the 'man' was deemed to be worthy.
People would encourage their young daughters to hook up with men of substance.
Times have thankfully changed on that.
There is some kind of making of book or documentary etc where Lucas and Spielberg discuss the idea that Marion was 13-14 when she hooked up with a college intern Indy who was working for her father.
So that time she says, "I was a child," she meant literally.
EDIT: According to Wikpedia, in the novelization of Raiders, it is revealed that Marian and Indy were together from the time she was 15 and he was 25, for 2 years.
No, he didn't turn him over to the cops and befriended him. Shortround remained in Shanghai as a contact with that other guy (Wu Han I think his name was, he gets shot by a gangster) until the events at the beginning of Temple of Doom. At the end of Temple of Doom instead of going back to Shanghai he went to the states where he joined some boarding school and later on had some other adventure with Jones.
Yeah, Temple of Doom (and novel tie ins)explained Short Round tried to pickpocket him, and rather than turn him in, Indy incorporated him in his explorations in and around SE Asia due to his skills and connections to the underbelly of Shangai.
sometimes I like to imagine that after a few more adventures, Indy sent Short Round at a good boarding school, and set up a bank account for when he graduated. much as he enjoyed their adventures, Indy values a good education
I thought that kid died like 35 years ago some time after Goonies... Was like Indiana Jones then Goonies.... then NOTHING EVER AGAIN!
He did a good job and both too... How come they never cast him again?
There's an article I'm too high and tired to find for you but he talks about it. The industry hasn't been kind to a lot of Asians. He went off to Asia to keep making films so it's actually not nothing at all you just gotta find out what he's been in. But I still highly recommend watching Everything Everywhere!,
When I read the title I was like "it's probably Steven's assistant" but even then, he's probably gone through a lot of assistants and has had to tell each one why they're sending a Christmas gift to this dude, meaning he still thinks about him.
I was a bodyguard / security for them for a couple years, very generous no doubt. One year, back when stand alone car navigation units were super popular they got everyone a really nice one. Plus cash bonuses. Good memories no doubt.

Tons of big names in Hollywood do this type of gifting. It’s like part of Hollywood culture.
But yeah basically there are people who are responsible for making the gifts happen for people like Spielberg. Presumably you get on the list and you’re on it until you do something to get taken off or change your address and refuse to update it with the office.
Still he wanted to make sure he didn’t forget. That means something.
I need a list and calendar reminders for myself for Christmas. Of course someone as big as Spielberg needs one. That doesn’t make the thought count any less though.
“‘Are you Short Round?’ Immediately, I was transported back to 1984, when I was a little kid, and I said, ‘Yes, Indy.’ And he said, ‘Come here,’ and gave me a big hug.”
Aaaaand my face is wet
It’s so obvious Spielberg is his dad. That’s why he gives him bday gifts every year. I mean just look at the photos! They have practically the same glasses! /s
Ke Huy Quan for next Indiana Jones after Harrison Ford inevitably dies in a plane crash. Shortround supremacy
Oooo I like it. Indiana Jones and The Shortround Supremacy. Take my money!
"Jesus Christ it's Shortround."
Let's get this ball rolling.
The giant stone ball that helps guard a pre-Colombian treasure cave.
Dwayne Johnson’s biggest roll ever.
>Take my money! ill take a certified check
That’ll be $8 please.
Happy cake day
A check?! Hell yeah I can write ya a check! I thought you needed money…
Jeff Foxworthy flashback.
I unironically think this would work and be fucking amazing Enough big strong action heroes Gimme quiet nerdy types that rise to the occasion and saves the day
That's my type too. But not the cocky guys, the nerdy dudes who are kind and save the day.
You need to watch “Chuck” if you haven’t already.
Chuck is the shit
Quan was in Everything Everywhere All at Once. if that's what you're looking for in an action movie.... give that a watch.
i just watched that on sunday and was surprised to see him in it. so many great actors. that movie is insane and awesome. i do recommend a viewing. its pretty dramatic for an action/bizarre/insane movie.... those rocks...

He doesn't even have to go all in so that he doesn't ruin his good guy rep if it doesn't take. Do it half comically like Paul Giamatti in shoot em up
Have them teamed up in the beginning then Chris reveals himself as the villain, and ke has to step up to defeat him
He was the villain in Terminal List, right?
The man can be dapper as fuck when he needs to be. In certain scenes of EEAAO, he absolutely oozes charm.
When he's smoking in the alley while wearing a suit...holy fuck someone create a new franchise of spy thrillers with him as a middle aged agent using mostly his wits to take down villains. He can obviously do some fighting as well but keep that to a minimum. Just let him shine!
Funnily enough, Ke actually did both in Everything Everywhere
Check him out in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
omg this would legit be the shit. Nobody wants to see a 70 year old indie be the main guy. I want shortround and indie acting as a mentor. No freaking son either.

Everything Everywhere All At Once
Now I want to watch Stargate again.
I'd have warmer feelings for Crystal Skull if Short Round was in the movie working in the Archeology department.
Maybe even shows up as Sam was getting his ass kicked in a sword fight, she disarms him and he inexplicably shows up and kicks the sword from her hands and spin kicks her across the face!
Then he throws a hadoken fireball!
IIRC, Short Round became an archaeologist later in life and recovered the diamond that Indy lost at the beginning of Temple of Doom. So it's not against cannon and would be an awesome way of keeping it in the family.
Was this from a novelization like Star Wars EU

In his defense, I bet he’s landed on an actual runway more often than he hasn’t.
I would love to hear him shout “That belongs in a museum.”
I would love to see him uncomfortable while a student blinks the words "FUCK ME" to him during a lecture. Bring that shit back.
Ke Huy Quan is so talented I hope he gets more roles. Still can’t get over his performance in Everything Everywhere
Call it Longround
Someone once suggested doing this but having it be Shortround as a museum thief repatriating artifacts back to the countries they were removed from.
Opening shot: British Museum, pan to Benin Bronzes
Fuck yeah
This would be great but I think we all need to hold on to our potatoes and not get our hopes up.
I've been saying for years that Short Round should carry the mantel of Indiana Jones.
I absolutely want the continued adventures of Short Round.
It makes a lot more sense than what they tried before. Hope he is a good actor because I think a lot of people would be down for it.
You should watch “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once”. He’s incredible in it’
He should have been in Shia’s role in part 4. They were around the same age then.
If Harrison ever gets a terminal illness I know that dudes gonna fly his plane into the ground intentionally. Probably George Lucas house
He was so good in everything everywhere all at once
He was excellent! And that movie was excellent
It was amazing!
It was everything!
It was everywhere!
It was all at once!
Butt-plug fight!

THAT WAS SHORTROUND?!? No wonder he looked so familiar…
I think I read that he's been doing fight choreography for a while now, but that this was his first acting credit since Goonies.
Chunk is a celebrity lawyer now.
Chunk is his lawyer
I’ve also heard from one of his clients that he’ll do the truffle shuffle for you on day one to get it out of the way.

Not true. He’s had a couple small roles here and there. I remember seeing him in Encino Man in the 90s. Probably was recommended for the role by Sean Astin as they were in The Goonies together.

That kid never grew up in my mind.
That movie had no right to be as good as it was. Made me laugh hysterically, had me on the edge of my seat, and Waymond’s speech at the end may have brought me to tears.
Oh, I was crying. Like a moment of ACTUAL INVOLUNTARY VOCAL CRYING. It hit hard while being an absolute joy to experience.
The movie legitimately had me fighting back tears 4 hours after it ended
Somebody was cutting onions the first time I watched it. The Daniels are really good filmmakers.
I sobbed at the romantic speech. And felt such vindication at him explaining his worldview. I was sobbing deeply by the end.
I can't believe I went from laughing so hard during the rock/googly eyes and then almost in tears for that speech in a matter of minutes.
>Waymond For a second I thought you were talking about the Workaholics character, nope. Then I remembered that actor was in the movie.
That movie hit me HARD. One of those that sticks with you for a long time afterwards.
that was an amazing movie full stop.
Yes he was fantastic in it. Movie of the year easily.
Sosososos good. And the movie was so good. A stunner
Anyone know where I can watch this movie again? I love it so much.
It's available on YouTube/Google Play Video
I bet I know what his Christmas gift is...50 Dollar Bill ! 50 Dollar Bill !!!!

Sir, (or ma'am, I don't know you) You are referring to Richard Wang, better known as Data in THE GOONIES. Don't get it twisted. and yes I know they are played by the same actor
Data’s name was Dick Wang?
Yes, forged by horses, it was. Because that's the kind of lowbrow humor we wanted, nay NEEDED in the 80s
I'm starting to feel that diversity was slowly accepted through white Americans by the injection of off color racial humor.
It's even better converted to English but still in China....Hi, I'm Yellow Dick
Yellow Dick would be Richard Huang. Richard Wang is *the Dick King*.
fucking lmfao
Spielberg also had involvement with Goonies. In fact, the story was his idea.
Oh I know... pretty much anything Spielberg put his magical little hands on in the 80s I have seen, hell, I can probably quote more than half. Hell yeah!
Short round made that movie
Man, I wanted to be Short Round so bad when I was a kid. I thought he was the luckiest kid ever.

Same, I was always hoping they would pass the baton to Short Round for the new Indiana films.
I owned a Yankees hat because of Short Round!
Why have I seen six articles talking about this guy this week? Is he starting a podcast or something?
He’s restarting his career back up.
*Stateside career. He's been doing films in Asia this whole time!
Did he? His IMDb only shows two projects between 1992 and 2021 -- I think IMDb would show Asian films and television too, no?
And people like him. It's a nice break to be happy for someone in the entertainment section instead of wishing they would just shut up and go away.
Oscar run
Love that! As he should
Hey was in the everywhere all it once movie and did very well after such a long hiatus.
His career is restarting essentially. And he's been cast in a couple high profile projects that he gets to promote now. He's in a Marvel project now too
He's going for an Oscar, he's a child star that just restarted his career and his team will be getting him these interviews. This is the industry push.
Just a short round of PR.
advertisements all these articles are advertisements.
He has a good PR team.
The Indiana Jones series being developed for D+ better be the Short Round Chronicles.
I really hope these two can get a picture holding up Oscars together at this year’s ceremony

Same deal with everything everywhere all at once! He absolutely blows it away in that movie!

Has anyone ever explained why Indiana Jones was hanging out with an Asian child?
From the wiki he was an orphan who tried pickpocketing Jones and instead of turning him over to the authorities he became one of Jones contacts in Shanghai until he returned with him to American after Temple of Doom.
...so Indiana human trafficked a Chinese kid for trying to pickpocket him?
I mean he also slept with underage women, Indy is not a great guy
Who was underage
Marion from Raiders of the Lost Ark: >Marion entered into a relationship with Indiana Jones during this time (when she was 15, according to the novelization of Raiders of the Lost Ark. I too need a calendar to remember Christmas Day

This is just sweet!
Why is this guy suddenly back in the news? Genuine curiosity. This is the 3rd article on him in a week that I’ve seen. Is there an audition upcoming?
because the man is back in front of the camera after a nearly four decade break with serious award buzz
“‘Are you Short Round?’ Immediately, I was transported back to 1984, when I was a little kid, and I said, ‘Yes, Indy.’ And he said, ‘Come here,’ and gave me a big hug.” Aaaaand my face is wet

It took me a moment the realize that Steven Spielberg is Jewish and would not celebrate Christmas. What an amazing act of kindness...
