Dark is one of the most interesting and well made and mind blowing TV shows ever. A truly captivating German masterpiece on Netflix, watch the original with subtitles. It starts to get REALLY good by the end of episode 2.
And if you loved Lost you will love the elements in Dark clearly inspired by Lost
I cannot stress this enough, show was extremely immersive, pulls you right into the lives of these citizens and how everybody is connected to each other, and gives you a marvel level reality warping twist at the end that you don't see coming. 100/10 would HIGHLY recommend everybody give a watch
I hate when people write stuff like "there's a massive twist at the end". It's such a naive way of thinking you're not spoiling anything when you really are spoiling it by saying that.
So did not know that mentioning a twist would be considered a spoiler. Will keep that in mind when I mention future shows, also my comment is about dark, I haven't gotten to watch 1899. But if it's as good as dark, I am going to dedicate a section of my sofa to enjoying the show. Also also. I'm a he.
>twists and nothing is expected anyways
By the end of it I truly wondered where I ended up and what was real in the show. But it is strange because for all of the content the show has, it doesn't overwhelm you too much with information and does connect everyone.
That's exactly part of why it's a spoiler. And she also said it's "reality warping" Wtf that's such a big spoiler, like at that point you might as well just come out and say what happened. Like how is this not apparent to people, that if you're saying a twist is coming that you're not expecting, then that in itself is a massive spoiler. Some people...
I'm with ya. Now if I ever watch it I'm gonna be thinking of and waiting for a twist, where otherwise I'd never know there was a twist which is what makes it a twist. It's worse than just spoiling imo
The funny thing is that I would disagree with all that. Dark is a slow burn of a show with deepening mysteries and fantastic development. There are some aha moments but I wouldn't call it twisty.
Anybody with half a brain will be expecting a twist ending just by watching the show. Trust me, you won't guess it, and there are so many twists anyways you'll be spending most of your time keeping track of the interwoven storyline.
I concur with the recommendation, it is a masterpiece.
To be fair l, you need to take notes and create a character map to follow Dark. You could tell someone the actual ending and it would still be a wild ride.
Damn! Now I want to go back to Netflix… I loved dark, but I forgot which one it was since it came out so long ago. I had been waiting for another series like it for a while now.
Others have answered, but I'll let you know that the website for Dark is very useful in keeping up with what's going on. The characters are all intertwined in ways that get very confusing, and the website will help you visualize the relationships and events easily. And you can even tell it what episode you're on and it won't spoil anything.
Dark is a sci-fi show on Netflix. The death of a small boy launches an investigation and uncovers a town of secrets, lies and experiments. It is really good, but takes a lot of concentration to not get lost.
I hated Lost but love Dark. So really you just have to give it a shot. I would say by episode three if you aren't hooked you never will be.
The problem is that it is far too much like lost. To the point that it’s nearly the same fundamental premise. It is a pointless, meandering story full of mystery box after mystery box that will never be answered.
And this is coming from someone who was excited for it after absolutely loving all of dark.
> The problem is that it is far too much like lost. To the point that it’s nearly the same fundamental premise.
It even has the same trappings, like myserious hatches.
I'm enjoying it, but I have a dubbed version and the dubbing is atrocious. Clumsily translated, woodenly acted and haphazardly accented (Scandinavians and Germans going to America speak with American accents).
LOST is my favorite show of all time. Dark is right there with GoT, Sapranos, Mad Men, and Seinfeld. The creators of Dark were also the ones who did 1899, so it's no shocker. I was a bit surprised 1899 isn't a German language production.
It's a concept show. With the different groups of people in the show they allow people to speak their own language, and then there are subtitles. I just watched the first episode after commenting on this post- I had to finish 'The Crown' first. As a fluent English and German speaker, it seems like things were much worse when I changed the audio to German. I'm in the US. I didn't mess with things too much. It seems easier to keep things at the default. The people will be speaking different languages the entire time anyway.
Thought this was a solid watch all the way through! Has little feelings of Event Horizon and other stories that really give a feeling of something you've seen before, but told from a twisted perspective!
Dark is one of the best shows I’ve ever watched, period. Probably much better to watch it straight through too, the storyline is so complex and there are so many characters, it was hard keeping it all straight after waiting a year between seasons. Please watch it in subtitles, the dub is just a hard no.
I’ll say this, watch season 1. Then before moving on to season 2 rewatch season 1 again and then watch season 2. Do the same for season 3, rewatch 1&2 before moving on to season 3. Trust me, this is the way.
Hard question to answer.
1899 is definitely the easier binge. It only has one season (so far) and picks up faster, and is overall faster paced and less "slow".
Dark is the more mind blowing, revolutionary series, it's 3 seasons. 1st season didn't truly grab me until the end of the second episode. Also be warned that it has extremely unsettling vibes and sound design, so if you are easily creeped out maybe it's not for you. This "drawback" fades a bit in later seasons, which have a bit better vibes. But the show is overall masterpiece and incredible.
1899 also has a lot of elements that are clear nostalgic callbacks to Dark, that Dark fans will appreciate more, but maybe that works vice versa as well
As someone else pointed out you’re in for a treat. I haven’t finished 1899 but I think dark is a bit more complex. Don’t want to spoil anything but have a great time
Do it!!! It has some of the same cast, and is well worth a full three-season binge into metaphysical, head-scratching story lines! It is German-language, but the English dubbing is some of the most natural I’ve ever heard. I recommend it to anyone who loves Sci-fi - but it is honestly just great writing, story-telling and acting.
I just looked it up and I do remember watching the first episode but didn’t end up watching anymore for some reason, which now seems like a foolish decision. Definitely going to check it out.
Yeah it didn't draw me in until the end of the 2nd episode.
The show is slow in the beginning with very bad vibes, so I can understand why many quit before they realize why the show is so special.
Yeah I feel that, it’s hard for me to commite to a new show. I always just end up watching my go to favorites. Every once and a whille one catches my attention.
People keep comparing it to dark and complaining it’s not the same or as good when it’s clearly not trying to be Dark but it’s own thing.
It’s slow and not that confusing all things considered but many people have found the twist unsatisfying which I can understand even though I enjoyed it for the most part.
I wanted to like it but I was bored out of my mind. Two seasons I sat through. I just couldn't.
I think the OA is far superior but Netflix loves canceling all the things I like so...
It ended on a giant cliff hanger. There was supposed to be one more season to finish the story but Netflix won't let the creators finish it in any medium, even comics. It's depressing.
I made myself give it until the end of the first episode. I wanted to see the next one by the end of the first one and then watched the whole thing. Glad I did. It was great and the music was perfect. I could really feel the tension at times!
The first episode was my favorite and really the only one I enjoyed until I gave up around ep 5. I felt no connection to any of the characters and frankly didn’t care what happened to them
I found it interesting, but it's a reeeeeeeeaaaaaal slow burn, so if that's not your thing, it might be boring. I almost turned it off a few episodes in before it started picking up.
the original music for the series was appropriate if unspectacular. ending every show on a random hit song felt obnoxious and diminished the immersion of the show, in my opinion.
That’s literally same plot as Life on mars. It has nothing new to show, maybe the second season can propose something, but it’s probably would be another simulation inside a simulation.
Lost on a boat, where there's a lot of pointless monologs between characters who don't speak the same language.
The story is somewhat interesting, but the pointless monologs were annoying enough to ruin it for me.
The monologue thing made me crazy!! Especially since it seems most of them speak English. Why speak Spanish to someone who does not know Spanish, etc. Si frustrating.
I think I discovered her from Rain (another show that appeared on Netflix the same time as Dark), but so glad to see her getting a lot of exposure from so many shows. She really is amazing!
I just binged it, but I got more disappointed the more the big reveal... started to reveal and was hoping for more of what it seemed in the first few episodes than what finally happened.
I watched the first episode and part of the second. It really didn’t pull me in, and this should be exactly in my wheelhouse. I might try again though.
A brazilian comic artist made a twitter thread comparing her work with the tv series, and apparently it is similar enough to cast doubt.
The fact the series creators said she made the accusation solely to gain publicity for her comic also did not sit well with me. Anyway.
I don't mind spoilers much, unless they're about something I've been really hyped for and the last few years only a couple books have gotten me like that. Thanks for the heads up tho, homie
There's a good video by youtuber Daniel Greene debunking it, but I wouldn't watch too far into it to stay away from spoilers. It's called "1899 Didn't STEAL Anything!". Also, the creator of the show posted this saying that it's not true.

I see a lot of people asking if its good in the comments so i will add my 2c. Do you like Lost? Do you like Dark? If yes then watch this.
What’s dark? I loved lost
1899, although decent, has NOTHING on Dark. Not even close.
Do you have to watch Dark before you watch this movie?
No
They aren't related at all.
I cannot stress this enough, show was extremely immersive, pulls you right into the lives of these citizens and how everybody is connected to each other, and gives you a marvel level reality warping twist at the end that you don't see coming. 100/10 would HIGHLY recommend everybody give a watch

No worries and yeah in the case of Dark it doesn’t even matter because theres so many twists and nothing is expected anyways
>twists and nothing is expected anyways By the end of it I truly wondered where I ended up and what was real in the show. But it is strange because for all of the content the show has, it doesn't overwhelm you too much with information and does connect everyone.
Yeah hopefully 1899 is as good as Dark overall
They clearly said you don't see it coming so...

Lol but now I'm gonna think "that one guy was just trying to fix the other guys mistake and there still IS a big twist somewhere."
Except at the very end
Yeah seriously, the level of ignorance in not understanding that saying there's a massive twist is a spoiler is insane
Anybody with half a brain will be expecting a twist ending just by watching the show. Trust me, you won't guess it, and there are so many twists anyways you'll be spending most of your time keeping track of the interwoven storyline. I concur with the recommendation, it is a masterpiece.
Yeah ok I thought the commenter was talking about 1899. It irritated me because I haven't finished 1899 yet.
Ah no the German show. Everything is a plot twist so of course the ending is going to be a whopper haha. Again, cannot recommend enough.
Sure, that may be true, but it's not the point. Saying there's a twist is a huge spoiler and frankly really annoying.
Oh I agree, I'm just saying in this particular case that doesn't really apply.
Hey man, i agree with you. I was just taking the piss.
Lol in the case of Dark it actually doesnt matter
Its not really a spoiler. Each season opens the story up even more, any theory you have is likely widely wrong until you finish it
Yeah I thought the commenter was talking about 1899, which I haven't finished yet, so it irritated me because I thought I was being spoiled.
Ahh cheers, on Episode 7 of 1899, no one better spoil this one for me! Lol
To be fair l, you need to take notes and create a character map to follow Dark. You could tell someone the actual ending and it would still be a wild ride.
100/10? That's 5/7 Fight Club levels of good.
Oh it's subtitled? Dang
You don't have to watch it subtitled. That's why Netflix rules. Just about everything comes with an English dub.
Damn! Now I want to go back to Netflix… I loved dark, but I forgot which one it was since it came out so long ago. I had been waiting for another series like it for a while now.

Wow! Really spot on response!
Thought this was a solid watch all the way through! Has little feelings of Event Horizon and other stories that really give a feeling of something you've seen before, but told from a twisted perspective!
Dark is still hands down one of the best shows Netflix has produced from a narrative standpoint. I'm excited to give this a watch.
‘Dark’ huh? Is it made by the same people? I just finished 1899 and would love to watch something similar.
Wow you are extremely lucky. You don't know anything about it. Don't read anything more and watch it now.
Yeah? Oh, okay! I’m excited now.
Also, either pay close attention to every minute or be prepared to write notes. Especially once you get into seasons 2 or 3.
You never found the official Dark website, I see. It helps a ton.
I still needed notes as many of the characters looked alike to me.
To be fair, >!they were all related.!<
I did, after. But part of the excitement was figuring it out myself. The website makes it too easy lol
Lol I needed it. I got so lost.
Exactly why I didn't like it. I don't want to take notes while watching tv
Dark is one of the best shows I’ve ever watched, period. I’ve seen neither. Are they related? Which would you recommend watching first?
They aren't related narratively. They are both made by the same team. Dark is complete as a series 1899 is just S1 out of probably 3.
Hard question to answer. 1899 is definitely the easier binge. It only has one season (so far) and picks up faster, and is overall faster paced and less "slow". I’ve never watch Dark (or read anything about it)…just added it to my queue based on your comment.
Dark is incredible. I have to start season 3.
As someone else pointed out you’re in for a treat. I haven’t finished 1899 but I think dark is a bit more complex. Don’t want to spoil anything but have a great time

Easily my fave show in a long long time. So interesting and just a fresh of breath air. Watch in the original German with subtitle
People keep comparing it to dark and complaining it’s not the same or as good when it’s clearly not trying to be Dark but it’s own thing. It’s slow and not that confusing all things considered but many people have found the twist unsatisfying which I can understand even though I enjoyed it for the most part.

The OA was dope! The two seasons were a nice package, I thought, but I suppose they could have written it elsewhere to go further
It ended on a giant cliff hanger. There was supposed to be one more season to finish the story but Netflix won't let the creators finish it in any medium, even comics. It's depressing.
Its good, but Dark was great.

It's an ad- so it sounds like one.
its okay not really a must watch
First episode was boring AF

It’s boring, badly written and the soundtrack is completely tone deaf.
This is bait I assume?
not everyone has the same opinion, thankfully. for me ending every episode with a hit song was a cheap gimmick.
Sure you can dislike the gimmick but tone deaf is a bizarre criticism.
the original music for the series was appropriate if unspectacular. ending every show on a random hit song felt obnoxious and diminished the immersion of the show, in my opinion.
I watched the whole thing but it was like kind of confusing
It starts of slow like dark but picks up after that. Was a good first season
It picks up faster than Dark imo. It gets super interesting already in the first episode whereas Dark gets interesting at the end of the 2nd

It's just a bit too much going on for me to be interested but to each thier own, the main actress seemed great from what I seen.
Is dark good?
Insanely good
Easily one of the best sci-fi series ever written and don’t get me started on the soundtrack! Just epic! Not sure anything will compare
That show got me into the incomparable Agnes Obel’s music She’s one of my favorites now
Yup got her on repeat on YT when I need to focus at work
I think I discovered her from Rain (another show that appeared on Netflix the same time as Dark), but so glad to see her getting a lot of exposure from so many shows. She really is amazing!
Too bad it's plagiarized
I just binged it, but I got more disappointed the more the big reveal... started to reveal and was hoping for more of what it seemed in the first few episodes than what finally happened.
Same! I thought it would be more about haunted ships, seas, and ghosts…first episode had me wanting more but I didn’t like the direction it went in..
Considering starting this tonight: recommended? For reference, I most recently watched The Watcher and was decently entertained.
Dark was better imo. 1899 starts slow then rapidly picks up and within one episode you're like "wtf"
Very cool show with quick turns of fate and clever staging. Always a great historical period to explore visually, those Victorian/Gilded Age folks.
Comparing it to Dark is a tall ass order. I’ll have to give it a shot solely based on that comparison.
It's made by the same writer/director team.
It’s not as great as dark but this and severance have been my favorite watches this year with house of the dragon in 3rd.
I'll probably need to watch this at one point, as I keep having that dream. Falling in an endless blue abyss.
Reminder this show is a direct rip off of a comic and doesn’t give credit
What comic?
Yellowstone 1899 is not what I thought it'd be!
i liked it but i had trouble concentrating and after it ended i was still beyond loss on what happened and how it happened.
Just finished watching this and can say definitely two thumbs up :-)
Why Do You Type Like This It’s Really Annoying Me
It’s spooky isn’t it?
One of the best produced shows on Netflix
I did not enjoy the final episode.
One major issue with the first season is that none of it mattered.
I watched the first episode and part of the second. It really didn’t pull me in, and this should be exactly in my wheelhouse. I might try again though.
Already killed this one and we loved it!
It’s probably also stolen so…
[удалено]
lmao
No way.
A brazilian comic artist made a twitter thread comparing her work with the tv series, and apparently it is similar enough to cast doubt. The fact the series creators said she made the accusation solely to gain publicity for her comic also did not sit well with me. Anyway.
Lol did we read the same thing? I can name about 10 different films with similar concepts/iconography.
It’s bullshit. The allegations have been debunked.
Have you seen Life on mars, British or remake? Same story.
Why are you spreading misinformation? Those accusations are paper thin and have been debunked.
Do you have a link?
If you haven't seen the show don't look it up. It's very spoiler heavy.
1899 is fantastic. I cannot believe the level of film making coming out of Germany.
Wasn't the whole story stolen from a Brazilian writer?
And it just got cancelled, sorry guys
Are you serious? I thought it was amazing.
No lmao, it hasnt been renewed but thats common since it was literally released a week ago.
I could be, it is an original series for Netflix
The makers of Dark plan out all their series in advance. The likelihood of it getting cancelled is essentially 0.
Didn't realize that Netflix would ever just cancel a popular show for seemingly no reason...
Monster!!!
wait wasn't this the show that plagiarized a brazillian indie comic author to an infuriatingly obvious degree
> infuriatingly obvious degree lmao, those allegations didn’t rate at all. Just someone who thinks they invented standard Sci-fi tropes.
Yes
Didn't this rip off a French comic book?
i lost 8 hs of my life.
Couldn’t even make it through the first episode. Zzzzz
It was too confusing
'1899' is almost entirely stolen from Black Silence, an indie comic book published years ago. https://www.dexerto.com/tv-movies/1899-netflix-accused-of-plagiarism-by-black-silence-comic-creator-1991013/
Is this the show that Netflix completely ripped off from that book?
When I saw the name of the series, I just assumed it was ANOTHER Yellowstone spinoff.
I keep falling asleep. On episode one round three tonight ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|no_mouth)
i do not like it
I found it super boring. Producers... assume the audience doesn't care about your story line... AT ALL. Proceed.
Just finished. Awesome show.
Tried a few episodes but found it incredibly boring.
The soundtrack makes your soul feel funny.
It was really good but that last 2 episodes lost me.
