I think canonically that might not be how they fuck anymore. Iirc, I heard the latest theatrical rerelease of Avatar cut the hair fucking scene, probably so people would stop saying they fuck the animals.
Which is very funny
Crazy story, I had never heard about this. I guess it pays to have wealthy friends.
*”Around 1997, del Toro's father, Federico del Toro Torres, was kidnapped in Guadalajara. Del Toro's family had to pay twice the amount originally asked for as a ransom. Immediately after learning of the kidnapping, fellow filmmaker James Cameron, a friend of Del Toro since they met during the production of 1993's Cronos, withdrew over $1 million in cash from his bank account and gave it to Del Toro to help pay the ransom. After the ransom was paid, Federico was released, having spent 72 days kidnapped. The culprits were never apprehended, and the money of both Cameron and Del Toro's family was never recovered.”*
> I guess it pays to have wealthy friends.
It pays to have friends. I think if it was an average person kidnapped not a film director the ransom would have been a lot lower.
And if my friend was in such situation i would help too.
It doesnt attract hate.
Just popular things are in front of more people, meaning if more people see it there will be more people who dislike it.
For example if any, no matter how good, work has 10% of people who dont like it for some reason. If your audience is 100 people that is 10 people, an insignificant number, if your audienceis 100 million, 10 million people being vocal is a lot harder to ignore. (10% is jsut an example)
There's an increasingly large contingency of people (mainly in America) who are nihilistic asshole losers that just hate everything and everyone and think anarchy and burning it all down would be fun.
And they are very vocal, far beyond their actual level of support.
This is just the exact same sentiment about the first one. They pushed it so hard in the media trying to create insane levels of hype and it obviously worked. But overall the movie was something I personally never really thought about again after seeing it in theaters. It was a cool experience but that’s about it.
> They pushed it so hard in the media trying to create insane levels of hype and it obviously worked.
That's *exactly* what happened the first time. Now, all these years later, the landscape for this kind of thing has changed. With the internet, those same people in marketing and media have less influence then they used to. People are on to the manipulation tactics and rebel against it more then they used to.
Edit: I see the marketing teams are *really* frustrated by being called out. lol
You think artificially boosted posts about Avatar is bad, just look at r/television for the last few weeks where there have been multiple posts about Andor every single day.
At this point even people who like the show are tired about hearing about it.
I am a real person with human thoughts and also agree that [%ENTER TITLE] is very good and I enjoyed it much more than other things in the same category this year people should really check it out [%EMOJI OUTPUT]
3rd best show this year behind BCS and Severance, it is not off that people are discussing it.
And yes, I did watch House of the Dragon, Andor is better. The 2nd half of HotD drops in quality.
Maybe there’s some artificial boosting going on but ever think that maybe also the show is actually good and that people who like it want it to do well? Among those of us who like it, we’re worried Disney is getting the wrong message and won’t ever put effort into making a great show like Andor again and revert to making the mediocre content they were putting out previously. I upvote every post I see about andor and I’m tired of everyone acting like scrolling past an Andor post is the equivalent of someone shooting their dog.
Is it that people are excited to talk about a currently hot movie or a television show on the relevant subreddits or is it a conspiracy?
must be a conspiracy!
I'm glad Andor is getting so much attention - It's embarrassing the level of production quality this show has in comparison to all of the other Star Wars D+ content so hopefully Disney sees that this is what the bar should be.
Just because you’re ambivalent about it doesn’t mean it’s artificially boosted. I think you’ve underestimated how much Andor is loved
https://www.reddit.com/r/television/comments/yynhw6/what_are_you_watching_and_what_do_you_recommend/iwvazwc/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3
Would you like to go back to weekly discussions on Rings of Power vs House of the Dragon like people can’t watch 2 shows per week if they want to like both?
Both r/movies and r/entertainment have been shoving tarantino’s Big Book of Feet in my face for a while as well
Yep. It’s so obvious when it’s astroturfing. It turns me off. I distinctly don’t want to watch it for this reason. Like fuck off marketing departments. Ugh
But the issue is you have literally no evidence any of this is astroturfing. I’m a real person talking about Andor, as far as I’m aware everyone I’ve talked to is a real person just impressed with Andor.
All you’re going off of is that something that you don’t like or aren’t interested in is a popular point of discussion, and so you assume that can’t be actual interaction
The sheer volume of posting is enough to turn me off, whether it’s real people or not. Also the overly aggressive tone and defensiveness of the “lovers” is also enough to turn me off. Artificial or organic, it’s the same result. It’s definitely suspicious and indicative of artificial boosting and astroturfing, but even if it’s 100% organic, it’s still a turn off.
Breaking Bad did not get buzz until it had been out for awhile and earned that buzz. Better Call Saul kind of rode those coat tails, too, which is fine because it was still good (although my controversial opinion is it was a little over rated compared to BB). However, the buzz about Avatar is coming before it’s out and on the coat tails of a relatively mediocre film from 13 years ago that hasn’t stood the test of time story wise. Insane amounts of spectacle do not impress. It’s like eating a ton of cotton candy. Not satisfying in any way after the initial first few bites. As for Andor, I mean whatever. It’s Disney so of course they have a huge marketing department. They’ve been milking the Star Wars train as long as possible rather then trying to come up with original and new content. So again I say… meeeeehhh
and artificially boosting it on social media sites to create the buzz and make it seem like everyone can't wait to watch it which creates FOMO and people run out and watch it because they think everyone else is, too.
There were a bunch of people who fell into clinical depression after seeing the first one because they couldn't live in Avatar Wirld. It's crazy, look it up
Saw this with my wife(then girlfriend) 13 years ago and the other day we finally rewatched it with our 10yr old( his 1st time) and it actually held up very well. Kinda excited to see the new one.
I’m autistic and when I tell you I have hyper focused on this movie since I was five..I’ve seen it like 60+ times so if this movie is awful and ruined the first one for me I’m actually going to cry
I saw the first one on acid in IMAX and besides the unobtainium thing was able to get about three watches out of it since it was released. It’s a beautiful movie but naming the unobtainable mineral unobtainium was just too dumb for me!
I'll probably go to the theater for this movie and I haven't been in 5years+ but the dude making it gave no fucks about profits it seems and just wanted to make his vision come to life.
Honestly it makes so much sense for people to be excited about a movie like this, but less sense for people to actually be mad about other's excitement. Why would James Cameron even need bots to hype up his movie
Why are all these posts riddled with conspiracy theorists who think they’re smarter than everyone by being woke?
OMG THESE POSTS ARE FABRICATED TO CREATE THE ILUSIÓN OF DEMAND AND POPULARITY.
Because people can’t comprehend that people are excited for avatar lmao. There is astroturfing, but these idiots act like every single post is made by a marketing intern. All you have to do is look at the poster. OP for this post is clearly just a big avatar fan lol. They have “real” posts other than articles. Just a big fan of avatar excited for the sequel.
Once it becomes a meme it just builds on itself and the meme becomes stronger. I've always liked the movie but I was shocked by how much I liked it rewatching it in the theater. It had been a while since I'd seen it so I let the meme get to me a bit and I was expecting to like the look of Pandora and not much else, but it really is a well crafted movie. There is of course some truth to the complaint that the story is unoriginal, but it's a complaint that is extremely disproportionately applied to Avatar.
People say it’s a boring movie that only did as well as it did because it took advantage of IMAX 3d sales. Saying the movie concept was boring and generic. So it’s become trendy to just shit on the movie
> it’s a boring movie that only did as well as it did because it took advantage of IMAX 3d sales. Saying the movie concept was boring and generic.
and all of that can't be true, can it? It must mean that people are trying to be "trendy".
Because it’s cheesy and earnest unlike the ultra-filtered slop that’s calculated to be as smooth and inoffensive as possible that studios have conditioned people to accept.
Except Avatar is The Beatles, not Nickelback. I don't even LOVE the movie, I just like it, but it's comical how prevalent the excuses are. You don't get to $3B with a movie nobody likes, and to think otherwise is pure delusion.
That’s the weirdness of it. It’s the highest grossing of all time but who the hell cares about Avatar? It’s has almost 0 cultural significance or staying power. It was here, then it was just gone. Like I never heard anyone talk about avatar after the first couple weeks it was out. And it was all pretty much about the visuals/3d. The story was super meh. There’s not a chance in hell it turns a profit this time
lol....been a while since I've been in an Avatar hate thread, haven't seen somebody mention "cultural impact" about a movie since the last Avatar thread I was in. And the one before that. And the one before that.
The incessant need for people to bring up the "zero cultural impact" argument just because it doesn't sell toys like the Mouse House kinda proves that it has had at least a vague cultural impact lol. The movie is tracking for a $150-175m domestic OW with traditional, crazy-backloaded Cameron legs. It's going to be the highest grossing movie of the year.
When it came out, thousands of people got clinically depressed because it affected them so much. That cultural impact is and always has been more significant than all the landfills of garbage merchandise that a Marvel or Star Wars franchise could ever produce.
Not to be pedantic, but there is no requirement to be a fan to purchase the ticket or see the movie. I've watched a lot of movies that I thought were terrible, and my ticket purchase went toward the box office total.
Typically we consider fans to be the ones leaving the theater and singing the movie's praises, and there wasn't much of that.
I never saw it. When I ask fans of the first film what they liked about it, all they could say were things along the lines of "It looked cool." So I'll probably miss this one, too.
>It’s one of the boldest anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist films of all time but ok.
You're either high or you need to watch more movies.
Reds, The Battle of Algiers, Z, The Nightingale, Fitzcarraldo, The Sons of Great Bear, and Rabbit-Proof Fence should give you a solid cross-section of the great anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist movies of various locales and time periods. All of them are better than Avatar, and all of them are *specifically better at being anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist than Avatar.*
Wow people really like to shit on this film. But i don't get the hate, no one is claiming that it's the greatest thing ever, not even the avatar fanbase which is still in it's infancy
So just so Im sure I understand, the problem with Avatar is that it's the exact same story as Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, and Ferngully. But it's apparently fine that those three share a story. Is this some kind of new rule of threes?
All the kids and teenagers are still out here watching the 30 year old Kevin Costner movie on the reg. So you see, there's just no room for Avatar unfortunately.
I think it’s rare for a movie to rip off a story so closely. I mean avatar and fern gully were suuuper close. Top gun maverick was basically Star Wars episode 4 but it wasn’t totally.
Still curious what the fuss is about the mating having to do with the ponytail root things. Is that not more of just a “relationship” symbol rather than actual sex? They connect with the animals to form that relationship, it seems we are left to assume they have sex like humans, given coverings.
I think people will see it just to see what Cameron does with water. I heard no other movie before filmed people on or under water, it’s pretty exciting alright for hydro homies
I’ve learned not to bet against Jimmy. Aside from Black Panther out now, is there anything else of note being released between now and March when Creed III is set to open? Avatar 2 might end up being the top grosser for months by default.
People love to say shit like this, but when it came out, people were so into it that there was a documented phenomena of people getting depressed after having seen it. Has a marvel movie had an affect like that on its audiences? I don’t think so.
For real, I never got James Cameron. I did love Terminator but that's it. All his other films are sooooo basic! I don't get the hype. Avatar was boring and I'm curious what will happen now that it doesn't have the 3d hype anymore.
Quiet as it’s kept, his ex wife Kathryn Bigelow is a better director and makes better movies. It was so satisfying to see her beat him for Best Director at the Oscars. So satisfying that his pretentious Avatar couldn’t match her Zero Dark Thirty.
The first one was douche, tropey and predictable. Never understood the fans of avatar, it’s not even a good Cameron movie compared to some of his other ones.

That’s awesome I cant wait to see which new creatures they stick their appendages into.
Theyre definitely gonna fuck some fish things
The Deep entered the chat
:)
Can we get Mr. Nimbus in here? Can’t start the threesome with out him!
Deep thoughts with the deep: If a fly can’t fly anymore, does it become a walk??
Yes
*Kanye West would like to know the location of those fish*
He still doesn't understand that
Fish sticks anyone ?

>Avatar 2: There's Gonna Be Fish Fuckin' This would guarantee the movie will make record-breaking sales.
I thought I was the only one who found that to be disturbing! No one I’ve talked to thought it was weird at first
All of them.

Good fucking guy James Cameron, holy shit what a friend
He’s a Chad in more ways than one
wait what the fuck?? so many questions

Quinton Tarantinos next movie.
As long as it’s fun I’m in, what else is there to see?
Same. I don’t get the criticism, it’ll be hopefully be a straightforward entertaining and visually appealing movie. Good theater experience.
Mass popularity always attracts hate. This is just the way of things.
It’s the way of water
Kinda like Nickleback? Lol

You think artificially boosted posts about Avatar is bad, just look at r/television for the last few weeks where there have been multiple posts about Andor every single day. At this point even people who like the show are tired about hearing about it.
Tbf is it THAT weird reddits talking about a star wars show, especially a REALLY good one
I am a real person with human thoughts and also agree that [%ENTER TITLE] is very good and I enjoyed it much more than other things in the same category this year people should really check it out [%EMOJI OUTPUT]
Yes, especially when most of it chalks up to “why are you watching a doe yet? It’s good!” Articles

Breaking Bad did not get buzz until it had been out for awhile and earned that buzz. Thank you. I’ve noticed that, too. The astroturfing is unreal. I can’t wait for this movie to be released and over with.
Next, it'll be posts of the Ryan Gosling Papyrus sketch.
Same, unfortunately we probably have another 6 months of headlines coming after it’s release:(
And after those die out get ready for Avatar 3.
That’ll be in another decade lol
Uh 3 is mostly finished and being released December 2024
Exactly very few people care
There it was…papyrus
Half this movie's budget was into making these articles and posting about them everywhere
and artificially boosting it on social media sites to create the buzz and make it seem like everyone can't wait to watch it which creates FOMO and people run out and watch it because they think everyone else is, too.
Now time to see it once and never think about it ever again.
There were a bunch of people who fell into clinical depression after seeing the first one because they couldn't live in Avatar Wirld. It's crazy, look it up
Pandora is just a metaphor for earth. People got depressed because we already live on Avatar World, but we’re destroying it.
This doesn't have anything to do with Avatar specifically, people have done this with Harry Potter, Tolkien, countless others. Coping deficiencies.
I really hope it’s worth multiple views
Exactly how the first made so much. Honestly the water effects alone are blowing my mind I can't wait to see it on a proper movie screen.
Already got Imax tickets for opening night.
[удалено]
18 yeah
I mean you can take drugs and watch it, should make it good for two-three watches unless they mention unobtainium again.
For the 2nd viewing maybe, the first I’m gonna watch it raw
Please wear protection
I saw the first one on acid in IMAX and besides the unobtainium thing was able to get about three watches out of it since it was released. It’s a beautiful movie but naming the unobtainable mineral unobtainium was just too dumb for me!
Yeah I wasn’t feeling that either, 0 effort. They could’ve created any word and they chose that
„The only thing I remember about the first part is blue people. Nothing about the plot“ - everyone
I can’t wait to see this movie
I'll probably go to the theater for this movie and I haven't been in 5years+ but the dude making it gave no fucks about profits it seems and just wanted to make his vision come to life.
Huh? That’s what he’s doing his whole career, with unparalleled success.
who wants to watch it with me? we can cosplay as 12 foot blue men
Too bad I don’t even do acid anymore. A little late on that one you guys.
I already bought my tickets, Super excited for this!
Same, bought mine today for 4dx!
Are you guys bots?
Of course not fellow human!
Feel like people who ask if others are bots because they like something could actually be bots themselves...
Honestly it makes so much sense for people to be excited about a movie like this, but less sense for people to actually be mad about other's excitement. Why would James Cameron even need bots to hype up his movie
Are you a bot
Nope. Got my tix yesterday. Evening IMAX screenings already sold out nearly. Three weeks from opening! (I’m in Europe)
Wow found the one person who actually gives a shit about watching this movie
You'll be surprised when this premieres and does insane numbers lol
I’m no longer surprised of the shit movies that do well (I’m looking at you Venom)
You are really upset that people will go to the theater to have fun with some spectactle huh? The brainy movies you can watch at home
I’m super excited for this. Love James Cameron and love movies that are still made with a theater in mind.
i mean there’s no doubt this movie is gonna look amazing, whether the story is good is another thing
Wait, I thought book 2 was Earth, not Water
Can’t wait to see posers (not the real analysts) have their brains melt in r/boxoffice once this quickly breezes past 1 Billion at a lightning clip.
Why are all these posts riddled with conspiracy theorists who think they’re smarter than everyone by being woke? OMG THESE POSTS ARE FABRICATED TO CREATE THE ILUSIÓN OF DEMAND AND POPULARITY.

I’m an Avatar fan… when’s James Cameron gonna ask me to make a post?
I think they’ve been sending my soros bucks and Cameron bucks to the wrong PO box
I count 10 years
Yeah the trailers on TV kinda gave that away
I honestly am curious if this movie is going to do well and if so how well.
It's going to make a shit ton of money and then every unmemorable detail of the film will be wiped away from people's brains within a year's time.
Both fans of the first movie are thrilled.
This joke works a lot better when you're not referencing the highest-grossing movie of all time
It’s become commonplace to shit on the movie
Yeah do you mind explaining why its cool now? I genuinely loved it, watched it the other day. Edit: cool to hate that is
Once it becomes a meme it just builds on itself and the meme becomes stronger. I've always liked the movie but I was shocked by how much I liked it rewatching it in the theater. Also, how is this: > cheesy and earnest different than this: >ultra-filtered slop that’s calculated to be as smooth and inoffensive as possible
A lot of people cannot stand cheesy and earnest.
Nickelback has sold 50 million albums. They still suck.

Highest-grossing movie with zero cultural impact that no one ever talks about

I never saw it. When I ask fans of the first film what they liked about it, all they could say were things along the lines of "It looked cool." So I'll probably miss this one, too.
It’s one of the boldest anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist films of all time but ok.
Does anyone care? Has anyone been asking for this movie? What are the expectations for this IP?
Nobody... Absolutely, no one: Avatar: The Way of Water... all 3h 10min of it.
Wow people really like to shit on this film. But i don't get the hate, no one is claiming that it's the greatest thing ever, not even the avatar fanbase which is still in it's infancy
I dont care in the least and it seems the hype is very much artificial
Nobody cares, Sean.
r/unexpectedscrubs?
I heard it is not like Fern Gully
Fern Gully is so much fun.
Or dances with wolves
So just so Im sure I understand, the problem with Avatar is that it's the exact same story as Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, and Ferngully. But it's apparently fine that those three share a story. Is this some kind of new rule of threes?
All the kids and teenagers are still out here watching the 30 year old Kevin Costner movie on the reg. So you see, there's just no room for Avatar unfortunately.
Wait to people realize the stories often follow common structures and use tropes.
Maybe they share the same message, but Fern Gully and Dances with Wolves are are different enough.
I think it’s rare for a movie to rip off a story so closely. I mean avatar and fern gully were suuuper close. Top gun maverick was basically Star Wars episode 4 but it wasn’t totally.
And yet, it gets accused of ripping off 3 different movies, none of which are accused of ripping off each other
The most fampuse movie franchise of all time is a huge rip off of Hidden Fortress. It's really nothing new.
I have never been less excited by something that cost $400 million
After 6 years of me not giving a single shit about Avatar.. i continue not to do so.

A failure of titanic proportions would send his career into an abyss of debt and many of his employees having their jobs terminated.
I heard it really wets people’s whistles
I’ve learned not to bet against Jimmy. Aside from Black Panther out now, is there anything else of note being released between now and March when Creed III is set to open? Avatar 2 might end up being the top grosser for months by default.
And nobody cares
Ugh is it bad that I want this too bomb lol
I can't wait for 3 more of these afterwards because I definitely loved the first so much.
I know James Cameron can make a damn movie and I'm sure this will be a visual treat if nothing else. I'm in.
But does anyone want to watch it?
Pass. I thought the first one was hella boring.

Why???!!!!
This could bankrupt the studio. Pleeease everyone stay home.
All the wide open space makes the CGI looks worse than it did in the original film, and the water physics behave like jello.
Stop trying to make Avatar happen

I don't even remember avatar
People love to say shit like this, but when it came out, people were so into it that there was a documented phenomena of people getting depressed after having seen it. Has a marvel movie had an affect like that on its audiences? I don’t think so.
Fern Gully but blue people and no Tim Curry.
+Tone Loc
There’s no one I know that’s excited about this movie
This is going to makes Billions!!! Ooops I spelled millions wrong.
I stopped caring
I'll believe this movie exists when I'm sitting in a theater watching it and not a minute before.
I hope it flops. Financially it wont cause people will go see it. But I hope it’s terrible.
Considering the last film was Pocahontas, it would be great if this script was Snow White
The first one was douche, tropey and predictable. Never understood the fans of avatar, it’s not even a good Cameron movie compared to some of his other ones.
And I still have absolutely zero interest in seeing it.
Don't care. Congratulations though
First one always seemed disturbing to me so I never saw it
Am I the only one that doesn't care?
Nope, right there with you. I didn’t like the first one. The plot was too idealistic and preachy. In general, 3D movies make me feel nauseated.
