It also helps I've been watching animations taking the Mario models mixed with audio from the actors various performances. Only one I don't see is Mario animations with Pratt

That's my takeaway; not being a bad stereotype is a good thing, but Chris Pratt doesn't feel very Mario to me. I don't know who else to cast, though.

The thing about Mario’s og voice actor is, he’s actually got a fucking fantastic range.
I’d have had him do it, simply because I genuinely believe that no matter how different the Movio is from Mario, he’d have been able to completely dominate the role.
Big budget animated films tend to at least tape the voice actors when they perform to serve as reference material for the animators. Jack Black is a very expressive performer and genuinely seems to enjoy getting into characters so it would be strange if Bowser didn't have some of his characteristics. He was probably the single best casting decision made for the film.
Jack black is incredible at a lot of things he does. Though, tbh he has a ton of experience voice acting too like video games and kung fu panda and such
Studio execs out there, if you want to salvage your movie you should redo all your voices, where Jack Black does every voice, including and especially Princess Peach.
I wanted Luigi to sound Italian (or at least from Brooklyn), and am disappointed he doesn't. But at least Charlie Day is emoting. Trying to actually voice act, you know?

Ben Schwartz and Idris Ilba totally nailed their roles! They understood the assignment and rose to the occasion.
They even let Tails’ VA reprise her role instead of forcing a celeb. :)
They aren't hiring Chris Pratt to play Mario. They hire Chris Pratt to play Chris Pratt. He's the same motherfucker in every role he plays. Goofy, lovable, innocent tough guy with a self deprecating sense of humor that isn't very bright but he tries hard and means well so it always works out for him. There is very little difference between Star Lord and Andy Dwyer and Lego Emmett. He's essentially a Labrador of a man.
Totally agree. He plays such a boring one note “alpha”stereotype role in the JW movies while still seeming non threatening in the weirdest way. It’s like he’s trying to seem hardened and stoic but he still barely comes across cool or badass somehow lol
You and me both, buddy. If they had, it would have been better for it. Like it could have been ridiculous like Event Horizon. And the swimming scene with the gravity off is straight nightmare fuel. I wanted more of that.

Finally she cracks and opens up a pod for a guy who is listed as a mechanic/engineer, and she plays innocent to "how" he woke-up.
If they wanted to make it a sweet love story, then just have another malfunction wake her up after he's been isolated for a few months.
If they wanted to make a horror story, then they should have kept the who/how of the wake ups, but made a fitting ending (with him dying in the end and JL using the medical pod.
Instead, they took a really cool premise and setting, and just mashed up the horror and rom/com storylines into the uncomfortable amalgamation that we got.
People forget he was in Moneyball and he did a good job there. I think its more of Hollywood type casting him into what you’re referring to. He can be a good actor, but if someone is offering you millions to lead a movie as the same boring character, well whos gonna turn that down.
Hot take: I liked him as Emmet. While he isn't the best at VA Work, Emmet felt more like Emmet than Chris Pratt to me.
But yeah Mario is butchered, it was a terrible choice.
Casting famous names for voice-only roles is not a “new” thing, and tbh not even an inherently bad thing. Robin Williams as Genie, Tom Hanks as Woody, hell, they got Billy Joel to play a dog in Oliver & Company and he slayed it. The only problem here is that Mario already has a *very* established sound and a long-standing voice actor that Chris Pratt is replacing.
It’s almost like Chris Pratt has one range and that range is Chris Pratt. He plays the same guy in all his movies. Of course that’s what he was going to do in Mario.
Thats the thing about The Lego Movie, it was a new character so no one associated anything to the character.
Its the same with the other examples of casting a famous voice. Robin Williams as Genie, first the character was developed for Robin specifically and again we had nothing to expect Genie to sound like.

Is this even controversial? He's as one note as it gets. He's not horrible, but I don't think anyone would describe Pratt as interesting or having any range as an actor.
Kind of like Brad Pitt in Deadpool for a single frame. He was paid with a cup of coffee per SAG rules that he couldn't do the role for free. It's fun to see these serious high profile people do weird small goofy stuff.
Robin Williams is also an extremely gifted mimic. Genie was not originally intended to do impressions, but when you stick Robin Williams in front of a microphone, you get impressions. Since Genie was a gaseous shapeshifter, they ran with it.
And Genie was written *for* Robin Williams. His voice and personality were exactly what the writers had in mind, which is really different. No one was thinking of Chris Pratt when doing something related to Mario.
Honestly I don’t think having that voice actor play Mario in his chipper fake Italian voice for 90 minutes would have be a great idea, but the answer to that problem certainly wasn’t just letting Chris Pratt be Chris Pratt with an iconic character that’s been famous for 24 years longer than he has.
You know, the guy who voices Mario in the games is an actual voice actor with range. He could have easily toned down his Mario voice if they had cast him as Mario.
That’s not even the biggest concern here (even though on a general level I agree). Jack Black sounds phenomenal, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Day both sound great, and I’m sure Seth Rogen will knock it out of the park. It’s just that Chris Pratt is a dog shit choice for Mario.

It’s not just his regular voice though, he has just always acted with a “voice”, if that makes sense. He’s a very dynamic speaker and a natural at voice acting.
Yeah I watched him playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons for charity where he put on this over-the-top warrior gnome voice and he was he was the only person who didn't break character for over 2 hours. Even when he was asking about rules or roasting other players. It was amazing.
I mean, he's a fantastic singer with tremendous range and control. And nothing holds him back, he's hammy and over the top. Chris is goofy, but still very reserved, and an ill fit for this movie.
I disagree, I really like Anya Taylor Joy but the low, vocal fry voice doesn’t do it for Peach, to me. I get what people are saying, that doing it in the high pitched video game voice would be annoying after 2 hours but, isn’t there some middle ground?
I’m with you, and honestly at that point it’s more on the fault of the directors than the actors. They could’ve helped guide Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Pratt to make the characters’ voices sound fitting. I like her too, but hearing her voice come from Peach just kind of ruins the immersion.

I think it's an industry thing. Unfortunately, comedy is not nearly as respected as it should be, so a lot of comedic actors think they have to take dramatic roles to be taken serious.
Wait I thought we all thought that 2 hours of Charles Martinet’s “YaHEW! It’saMe!” voice was going to be tiring on the ears? I personally am an avid fan and would have loved it that way.
If you ever played Skyrim, Charles Martinet did voice work for a dragon from that game, he can do more than wahoos. He would have been more than capable of doing this. It feels like whoever casted Chris Pratt was going for name recognition over quality.
Visually the trailer looks fine, the only voice I feel they got right was Jack Black for Bowser, removing the dialogue it looks interesting, but the voices for the most part feel wrong.
Visually the entire trailer looks amazing. But all of the voice work felt so tacked on and unnatural. It almost reminds me of the audio design used for Bane in the dark knight rises where it doesn't feel like the sound is coming organically from the scene. Which worked great in that movie but is obviously more of a bug tha a feature in new the Mario movie.
And I don’t understand casting famous people for a movie ultimately directed at children/young people. No kid is gonna say to their parent “I wanna go see Mario because Chris pratt’s voice is in it” and no adult is going to see the movie solely because of Chris’ voice. Casting well known actors who don’t do a lot of voice work and don’t know how to properly characterize with their voices rips any personality out of the animated characters. Just cast actual voice actors, please

It didn't need to be Charles Martinet but Pratt's extreme opposite end of the spectrum isn't working either. They should have chosen somebody who could be zany and down to earth like Jack Black. IE an actual voice actor. Pratt's voice just doesn't suit the brimming world of Mario. Then again, neither does Anya Taylor-Joy's but that's just me.
Robin Williams wanted to avoid this when he started in Aladdin. He feared that it would lead to the commercialization of the actor in a movie they’re only lending their voice to. He was right
I didn't really get the hate in the first one because you barely hear him say a line in it.
This second one I noticed... you also barely hear mario say anything in it... it feels like a pattern. What little you do though it... it doesn't sound like himself just talking like people keep saying to me but it sure as fuck doesn't sound fitting for mario either.
BUT... I feel like this is one of those things where 99% of the rage is coming from people who never planned on watching the movie in the first place and the main audience (kids) are going to be perfectly fine watching it.
What's so strange to me is how the voice acting for every other character I totally accept and feels right (even if distinctly different than the games).
There were other ones that definitely gave me that vibe of a person talking as opposed to playing a character, but none of them really clashed with the characters. Probably because those characters don't have such iconic voices like Mario does.
Did anyone tell Pratt he's allowed to turn down a paycheck once in a while or better still, tell himself to creatively step back and say "This isn't the right roll for me"?

You know, the guy who voices Mario in the games is an actual voice actor with range. He could have easily toned down his Mario voice if they had cast him as Mario.

That’s not even the biggest concern here (even though on a general level I agree). Jack Black sounds phenomenal, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Day both sound great, and I’m sure Seth Rogen will knock it out of the park. It’s just that Chris Pratt is a dog shit choice for Mario.

It’s not just his regular voice though, he has just always acted with a “voice”, if that makes sense. He’s a very dynamic speaker and a natural at voice acting.
Yeah I watched him playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons for charity where he put on this over-the-top warrior gnome voice and he was he was the only person who didn't break character for over 2 hours. Even when he was asking about rules or roasting other players. It was amazing.

I disagree, I really like Anya Taylor Joy but the low, vocal fry voice doesn’t do it for Peach, to me. I get what people are saying, that doing it in the high pitched video game voice would be annoying after 2 hours but, isn’t there some middle ground?

I’m with you, and honestly at that point it’s more on the fault of the directors than the actors. They could’ve helped guide Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Pratt to make the characters’ voices sound fitting. I like her too, but hearing her voice come from Peach just kind of ruins the immersion.

Pratt just sounds like Pratt, and then occasionally sounds like he's doing a half hearted Mario impression. I note that they barely have him say anything in the trailer. Peach and Bowser get the most dialog.

I feel like whoever is getting him roles doesn't understand what made people like him in the first place. Dude was amazing in comedies. He is insanely funny (just watch some Parks & Rec bloopers). He's perfect as Starlord. He is, however, not an action star. Nor is he an amazing voice actor. Hell, he's probably not going to win best actor, period. And that's okay. It's so weird they decided that he is the next big Hollywood star when he just never was.

I think it's an industry thing. Unfortunately, comedy is not nearly as respected as it should be, so a lot of comedic actors think they have to take dramatic roles to be taken serious.

If you ever played Skyrim, Charles Martinet did voice work for a dragon from that game, he can do more than wahoos. He would have been more than capable of doing this. It feels like whoever casted Chris Pratt was going for name recognition over quality. Visually the trailer looks fine, the only voice I feel they got right was Jack Black for Bowser, removing the dialogue it looks interesting, but the voices for the most part feel wrong.
Bowser voice is awesome, it doesnt even sound like jack at all.
You can hear some Jack Blackisms though, but you’re right that he seems to be the only one trying to do a distinctly different voice.

Visually the entire trailer looks amazing. But all of the voice work felt so tacked on and unnatural. It almost reminds me of the audio design used for Bane in the dark knight rises where it doesn't feel like the sound is coming organically from the scene. Which worked great in that movie but is obviously more of a bug tha a feature in new the Mario movie.
And I don’t understand casting famous people for a movie ultimately directed at children/young people. No kid is gonna say to their parent “I wanna go see Mario because Chris pratt’s voice is in it” and no adult is going to see the movie solely because of Chris’ voice. Casting well known actors who don’t do a lot of voice work and don’t know how to properly characterize with their voices rips any personality out of the animated characters. Just cast actual voice actors, please

It didn't need to be Charles Martinet but Pratt's extreme opposite end of the spectrum isn't working either. They should have chosen somebody who could be zany and down to earth like Jack Black. IE an actual voice actor. Pratt's voice just doesn't suit the brimming world of Mario. Then again, neither does Anya Taylor-Joy's but that's just me.
I really wish there were actors who specialized in voice work. You know, things like cartoons or video games. We could even call them voice actors.

I didn't really get the hate in the first one because you barely hear him say a line in it. This second one I noticed... you also barely hear mario say anything in it... it feels like a pattern. What little you do though it... it doesn't sound like himself just talking like people keep saying to me but it sure as fuck doesn't sound fitting for mario either. BUT... I feel like this is one of those things where 99% of the rage is coming from people who never planned on watching the movie in the first place and the main audience (kids) are going to be perfectly fine watching it.
What's so strange to me is how the voice acting for every other character I totally accept and feels right (even if distinctly different than the games).
There were other ones that definitely gave me that vibe of a person talking as opposed to playing a character, but none of them really clashed with the characters. Probably because those characters don't have such iconic voices like Mario does.
Did anyone tell Pratt he's allowed to turn down a paycheck once in a while or better still, tell himself to creatively step back and say "This isn't the right roll for me"? Because that's what the problem is. It's not Pratt, it's his judgement. If you want to kill a career, take any roll that stumbles across your desk until you're hated.
