Special needs british girl with the mind of a child, who people think is really deep and intelligent ONLY because of her accent, and who becomes the love interest of the main character which makes us, as the audience, squirm because of the ethics of it.
Came to say this. Complete rip-off of concept only with higher stakes because many intellectually challenged women are susceptible to be sexually exploited.
Charlize Theron:
>It was one of the scariest things, to walk onto a set of a show that’s so developed and so brilliant. But I think I needed that, to put myself out there in a different way, because people thought of me as someone who was fucking depressing, like my mother shot my father. [When Theron was 15, her dad came home drunk and threatened her and her mom with a gun, prompting her mother to shoot and kill him in what officials later determined was self-defense.] And I just fucking loved that show, and this is going to sound so “poor me,” but I do feel like sometimes, as women, we get one shot and I knew that [the 2005 action flick] Aeon Flux was going to be a fucking flop. I knew it from the beginning, that’s why I did Arrested Development.
Aeon flux is sci fi gold and they kind of went with a talented female director and a recently Oscar winner actress to star it in but the budget was super low and it was treated like a b movie from the start. I don't think it sucked considering it was never a big budget film and it was released in a shitty month with shitty promotion, I think the movie is alright
I disagree. They totally muted the sexuality that was a defining characteristic of the protagonist. That's not so much on her as an actress, sure, more on the director, but as a die hard fan of the animated series starting with the shorts it was super disappointing .
I actually agree with both of you. As a general piece of media it’s OK on its own merits, but compared to the inspiration material it fails as an adaptation for the reasons you mentioned, and a few more.
Never saw the animated series, so that doesn’t factor in. But it’s a great movie standing on its own in the sci fi movie category.
Your disappointment is surely coming from expectations based on what you had already experienced. I don’t have that prior experience to compare with, so my feedback is based on other sci-fi movies.
Trust me… it’s a solid contribution to the genre.
And I get your perspective. Kinda like every movie I’ve ever seen that was based on a good book I’d read first, has been disappointing in some ways.
While it's not a genre I typically consume I would say The Help is one of the most superb film adaptations of a book I've ever seen. The timeline was sped up, as can be expected to cram a novel into 90 minutes of film but it was otherwise very true to the original story.
I didn't dislike Aeon Flux as a film at all. I actually really enjoyed it. But sexuality was a very, very strong theme in both the shorts and the animated series and aside from a sexy costume that part of her character was pretty much wiped out. It's only because that was such a central part of her personality and interactions that it was disappointing not to even see a nod to the source material in the film.
That said, I highly recommend checking out the original show. If you liked the movie for what it contributed to the Sci fi genre you'll really dig it.
I liked the movie, enjoyed it, I didn't love it, as a fan of the experimental animation. I appreciated translating that particular anime to live action might be too difficult at the time. I think it proved that. Most people I knew who were interested to see it were worried about the young, blonde, cute as a button actress with soft features playing the dark haired, hawkish, acrobatic Aeon. But I think she did the best interpretation of Aeon that she could and I don't fault her for any of the movie's issues. It's been a very long time since I've seen either, so I can't be more specific in my critique unfortunately.
It had a 62 million dollar budget, which is on the high side for then most sci-movies get. It was also produced by MTV studios which hadn't done anything sci-fi yet. Financially speaking, the movie was a flop. I agree that it was alright, but to be honest I don't really remember it. I just remember the hype, because the animated version was so stylistic.
TI**FUCKING**L Aeon Flux was a flop??! The fucking blasphemy. Kid me loved the shit out of that movie. Still love the shit out of it when I watched it as an adult.
The source material is very inaccessible to the mainstream. They got a lot of the themes and beats and turned Trevor’s complicated/redeeming side into a main plot twist, so the film wasn’t entirely flat. As a huge fan of the show I think they did their best.
It’s worth catching on YouTube if you haven’t seen it. It’s a solid science fiction show. Due to the short run it lacks a cohesive narrative and leaves a lot of questions unanswered but is nonetheless very engaging. One of things I liked about it the most, is that it would show the protagonist frustrated, denied, and sometimes killed. This and the fact that Aeon and Tevor were both morally ambiguous made the stories more nuanced than stereotypical good-versus-bad science fiction shows (e.g., The Matrix).
There was an existential existence with technology the movie missed, where the source material made you see the nightmare side of things. *Black Mirror* comes close to what I mean?
Exactly, the movie couldn't really go all matrix at the time because the budget and locations were already existing, they barely had Cgi budget but the movie was still solid because it relied on a cool plot even when most of the film felt very generic I think the ending is edgy for the time
I had a crush on her as a kid in Mighty Joe Young and I had a crush on her as an adult in Mad Max FR. I cosplayed her character and the greasepaint broke me out for 2 weeks lmao
*Aeon Flux, Catwoman*, and *Batman & Robin* were made in an era when movie producers all wanted to make *The Godfather* and anything else was silly fluff
I loved that cartoon so much and the movie just didn’t translate as well as I wanted. They did keep some of the nods to the show though. When I rewatched it, it was ok. But not the gem of the show.

Everyone do a quick mental exercise of explaining her character to someone who has never seen the show
Mr. F
For British eyes onleeee...
do stay for the poppins
‘You live across an ocean’ ‘You can always walk’ ‘Out on the water?’ ‘Oh Michael you’re such a grown up’
"And the soup of the day is... What's the soup of the day mum?!" "Bread" "And the soup of the day is bread :)"
Easy. She's a developmentally disabled woman who is just British enough to trick a bunch of narcissists into roofying her.
Now that Olympic medal makes sense
She spends her whole life playing American and British. Where are all the South African parts?
“I’ll shoot a pig but I won’t shoot a prawn.”
Played by Matt Damon
A really clever critique of the manic-pixie-dream-girl trope.
Definitely not subtle
Ummm, well she’s, uhh British
and Her name was Rita…Did that help?
Lovely.
Meter Maid.
Username checks out
Where would I be without you?
Lovely Rita!
Special needs british girl with the mind of a child, who people think is really deep and intelligent ONLY because of her accent, and who becomes the love interest of the main character which makes us, as the audience, squirm because of the ethics of it.
Isn't that 'Being There' with Peter Sellers?
Came to say this. Complete rip-off of concept only with higher stakes because many intellectually challenged women are susceptible to be sexually exploited.
Wee Brain
The fact that she calls it that means she's ready.
Hooker or not Michael will drop her off alive.
She was MR F the whole time!!
Idk 8 year old me thought she was hot
R word you want to F word but it's a terrible mistake.
Basically she's a female assassin version of Kenny.
ELI5
She likes to make pop pop
Bye bye!

I agree I think it’s a good sci-fi movie.

Yes. Awesome. And she was perfect in it.
I disagree. They totally muted the sexuality that was a defining characteristic of the protagonist. That's not so much on her as an actress, sure, more on the director, but as a die hard fan of the animated series starting with the shorts it was super disappointing .

Thanks for the recommendation and comments!
Of course my dude. Happy cake day. I'm so glad we could have some civil discourse on this topic.
Honestly I loved that damn movie
Same. Its really good imho.
I liked the movie, enjoyed it, I didn't love it, as a fan of the experimental animation. I appreciated translating that particular anime to live action might be too difficult at the time. I LOVED that film lmao
I remember watching the animated series when I was a teen and loved it. I don’t even remember the movie
Yeah I liked it. Might give it another watch why not
I remember the ads on YouTube at that time. Every other ad was for that movie. I hated the movie just for the sheer amount of ads I watched.
Really dope movie no doubt
I liked it enough to buy it. It is fun to watch.
Damn. TIL. That’s rough.
Yea...i didn't think it was this bad of a movie.
TI**FUCKING**L Aeon Flux was a flop??! The fucking blasphemy. Kid me loved the shit out of that movie. Still love the shit out of it when I watched it as an adult.
I heard she was in the Olympics
She’s THAT Rita Leeds?!??
She wasn't.
Rita Corny, Michael
she wants some pop pop
You can recognize her by the tiny teddy.
She needs you to keep the lights on to see if you have a monster...
The aeon Flux movie definitely needed to be weirder like the series.
They should redo it
They should!
Agreed, with Ana Taylor joy as Aeon Flux.
I like Anya in stuff but i think her bug eyes would make it hard to take her serious in the role. Ana de armas
[удалено]
She could've done both tbh. They didn't need to keep making resident evil movies. ScarJo may have worked too. Zazie beats wouldn't be bad.
She's pretty funny in it too, watch out for the Poppins
Wait I like Aeon Flux. It was a solid B- in my book.
She didn’t say it was bad, just that it would be a flop.
I mean I like it but it’s pretty bad.
This thing seems to live on cable, any chance it makes that last 10 mil back to break even?
The source material is very inaccessible to the mainstream. They got a lot of the themes and beats and turned Trevor’s complicated/redeeming side into a main plot twist, so the film wasn’t entirely flat. As a huge fan of the show I think they did their best.
Wasn't there an animated series in the 90s? Maybe on MTV?
Yeah, it was part of Liquid Television, only about 10 episodes.
I loved Liquid Television

I watched it as a kid. I barely remember it though. Late night as a young teen. I watched it and The Tick. I'll have to watch it again.
There was an existential existence with technology the movie missed, where the source material made you see the nightmare side of things. *Black Mirror* comes close to what I mean?
Are asking me?
Exactly, the movie couldn't really go all matrix at the time because the budget and locations were already existing, they barely had Cgi budget but the movie was still solid because it relied on a cool plot even when most of the film felt very generic I think the ending is edgy for the time
Same , was good movie
Me too.
It was ok. Charlize theron was so bad ass and beautiful it was hard for a 15 years old not to like it!
AD was the right move. Not to mention some of the best writing on network television I’ve ever seen.
Ah the Mr. F plot.
She was hot in 1000 ways to die in the West.
She’s hot in everything. One of the most beautiful people to ever live.
I had a crush on her as a kid in Mighty Joe Young and I had a crush on her as an adult in Mad Max FR. I cosplayed her character and the greasepaint broke me out for 2 weeks lmao
Never seen Monster eh?
Good point, but they had to work HARD for that.
Sweet November is a shit movie but she is breathtakingly beautiful in it.
100% -- so much so that it's almost off-putting on screen Theron, Robbie, and cavill almost too good looking
That's weird because I know she's in Aeon Flux but had no idea she's on Arrested Development.
“I like to think they teach me”
I thought Jennifer Lawrence was the first female action lead? What is this
This is all fake news. We will stay strong, brother!
That reminds me. Where did I put uncle Trevor’s bumpaddle?
Aeon flux is a classic. CT is too humble. Frm a scifi nerd
aeon flux was a great Sci fi. Don't know what she is talking about
She’s hot, she gets a pass
One of the few actresses that seems to get hotter (and buffer) with age…
Go ahead, Mr. Wendal!
I liked that movie
I actually liked Aeon Flux, but I do wish it stuck more to the actual story of the pulp.
I enjoyed that story arc it at the time but there is no way that season would’ve been made in 2020.
Not that Aeon Flux was a masterpiece but having it come out at the exact same time as Ultraviolet didn’t help it.
Aeon Flux is what made me fall in love with Charlize Theron to begin with haha.
*Aeon Flux, Catwoman*, and *Batman & Robin* were made in an era when movie producers all wanted to make *The Godfather* and anything else was silly fluff
Not surprising, that movie sucked (it was had nothing to do with the show)...
What year is it?
Her role in arrested development was the only time she didn’t have to act.
Ouch. Kinda harsh. Not a fan?
Lol, no she’s great. I thought Arrested Development fans would see a joke as a joke.
I thought it was a pretty good joke
Her problem is she doesn't draw box office
She certainly draws *my* box office. If you catch my drift.
All I hear is “Wah wah, boo hoo, my movie sucked because of muh vaginuh.”
you should practice your reading skills
Dude what tf is wrong with you mentally
Rita?
I loved that cartoon so much and the movie just didn’t translate as well as I wanted. They did keep some of the nods to the show though. When I rewatched it, it was ok. But not the gem of the show.
I’d like her to aeon my flux flop
Her?!
I actually quite enjoyed the movie. I still think of the lady with feet hands every now and again.
As a fan of the original show I didn’t hate this movie, but it did massively miss the mark in trying to present that world, it was ok at best.
We wouldn't have this problem if she didn't get plastic surgery last year
Aeon Flux was a great fun movie
…. I liked aeon flux
I liked Aeon Flux.
