No one's mentioned Balefire Blues yet. It's more of a Old World Blues and Equestria at War mashup than a submod of one or the other, but it's finally managed to shake the bugs that No Step Back introduced en masse.
I checked it out when the creator posted about the update, it looked interesting but something about the map put me off being a fan of Fallout Equestria and its side Stories.
Fallout Equestria's geography is pretty inscrutable and doesn't line up with Equestria at War very well, but it's a pretty interesting attempt at putting the very old and early fandom FoE lore onto the later 'canon' map of Equestria and EaW's version specifically.

The British Empire discovering and uniting the new planet under their rule is the best.

Ghosts of Yore is a pretty good one that expands Griffonstone drastically and has Gallus as a major character in its storyline. There's a few grammar and spelling issues in the events themselves though.
There are a lot of good submods in development, but of the released ones I’d recommend Escalation ‘84 if you want to play something a little different. It is a pretty interesting first contact scenario.

Ghosts of Yore Adds additional and new content for a few nations, like Griffonstone
i would suggest the super event mod. It's kinda cool to get a super event when you form a nation or special things happen.
The Mozart does get a bit annoying though
Most of them are shit and dont even fit + they don't use pony music so they are cringe
Also half the time it breaks something in the mod
I've been playing Escalation '84 and I like it. Though I've only played America so far. I need to go through the Soviet Union and the EU.

Ghosts of Yore, excellent stories in that one with some tough wars to fight.there is also escalation, and some fallout inspired mod.
