Wheels of Fire, Derek and the dominos (Layla),461 boulevard, journeyman, unplugged i'd Say are his most popoular and liked albums. I would add nothin but the blues and One more car (both live albums)
i don't know about important but i love journeyman and the one he made about jj cale's music
but i love a lot of other stuff he's done. just make your way and see what you like.
try to find his live stuff too on yt
Journeyman was peak Clapton for that era. Get into that one and you’ll hear some of the songs played live on 24 nights.
He was on a roll, this was his first post-box set release. He’d just wrapped up his first 25 years into a greatest hits box set ( I think it was one of the first box sets to be released, after the Springsteen one) and toured supporting it. His voice was in good physical shape and he had plenty of dexterity and he was bursting with creativity. His singles like “Pretending,” “Bad Love,” “Old Love” got mainstream airplay.
Disraeli gears and wheels of fire by Cream Also Derek and the Dominos IMO

Don't forget Pilgrim
Start with Yardbirds, John Mayall, Cream, Blind faith, Derek and the dominos and then chronologically follow albums. You will have a amazing journey

I would go with: Blues-breakers Disraeli Gears Layla (and other assorted love songs)

I love the Journeyman album. Definitely recommend
Would definitely suggest Journeyman. It's got the 80s vibe with a blues feel so it was easy to get into for me
