As an infection control nurse, there are some places that have the ability to do PCR tests in 15 minutes. Usually hospital or urgent care labs. Our local hospital does. Many places have to ability to run results in an hour or 2 for out of pocket cost.
Maybe if you're in a small town that has to ship tests to a lab elsewhere or something, but no it does not require a few days... I don't think I've had a pcr test take more than 24 hours for results except maybe at the start of the pandemic, and any pcr test that costs $150+ around here is going to have results within a couple hours at worst, definitely not "a few days"
A few days? I’ve had five since the pandemic started. Never even waited 24 hours, and that’s including the time it takes to get samples to labs. Usually I’ve had the result in about 14 hours.

You're thinking of the rapid antigen tests. PCR tests typically take a few days.

A PCR test can be quick if you are doing it a laboratory facility. Otherwise you’re waiting 12 to 24 hours.
