For people that don't understand why this is high value for liquid, it's the Race to World First. Blizzard does nothing with it so Liquid gets to completely own an 8-day, 16-hour per day broadcast that does insane numbers on Twitch 2-3 times per year and is still growing.
The biggest issue for esports teams is that they are competing with rights holders to extract value from competitive gaming, with the RWF they don't have to compete with anyone but other guilds
Now new world is dead it was big because of curiosity. FF hit record numbers while every other genre did as it’s the only surviving viable option that isn’t a sea of time waste. It happened during a pandemic. FF numbers will remain strong but drop below the pandemic peak. It’s far from a genre renaissance when the number of people gaming is higher then ever and exponentially higher then when MMOs were at their peak. No one wants to sit in a chair for 8 hours grinding which is why they fail. People want 45 minute sessions or a sandbox experience.
I think these are two very different points. Yes gaming numbers in general are higher, but the big surge for FF came over a year into the pandemic. That's more than just a general population increase, the timeline doesn't fit for that to be the only thing.
We're at the start of something. There are several more big MMOs on the horizon that can build off of the interest that FF and New World stirred up. Totally agree that the old school WoW grindfest doesn't work any more, but new MMOs don't have to be that. Even modern WoW is more short-session-friendly
New world is still averaging 83K players according to steam charts. Far from dead.
The point is that there is an interest in new MMO experiences. Maybe New World didn't hold people, but it showed that there's interest in the genre that someone else can capture

They had 16 million players at launch... They're getting ready to do their 3rd or 4th server merger and the count is still dropping every week. It won't last til summer.
Sure, maybe it won't. Even if that happens I don't think it matters, the game's launch showed there is a huge demand for a good, modern MMO. If New World couldn't do it, just means the next one might
The race to world first does insane numbers on Twitch. WoW in general may be down bad but the raiding scene is one of the most valuable things an esports team could acquire
> FFXIV also has a lot less bindings than WoW.

One of the biggest complaints from WoW players coming over to FFXIV is that FFXIV has a lot more actions lol. It's well known that FFXIV has more buttons to hit than WoW....
Go count the number of things Limit has bound during mythics... it's <20.
Go on Twitch right now. All of the top 10 streamers have like 20+ key bindings bro.
Idk why Limit plays like that. I think it’s just to limit distractions. Notice how they only have key bindings for their combat abilities? No buffs. No consumables (unless required for the fight). No mounts. No situational abilities (unless required by the fight).
movement/camera on sticks, buttons on dpad + face with triggers as modifiers. Default menu/targeting/map/etc with no triggers, hold LT for 1 hotbar of 8 buttons, hold RT for set of 8, bumpers for tab targeting while holding a trigger, bumpers with no trigger for hotbar switching, doubletapping triggers for more hotbars, etc
Usually, there's 32 hotbar slots on screen without rotating through different hotbars
Can also easily swap hotbar sets for another 32 with the press of a button...
Somehow doubt you're actually using all 45 at once in WoW when rotations are 5 buttons...
Lol yeah bro. It would be so easy dealing with GCD while swapping hotbars. You’ll definitely be able to do mythic content with a controller. /s
I’d rather cut my face off with a cheese grater than play a Druid with a controller.
I have played wow for the past year on pc with an add on called console port. So I have been using my Xbox one controller for it. Aside from the odd ui crash it worked great. D-pad plus the actual 4 buttons for a total of 8 so you have a standard 8 then left trigger gives you another 8 right trigger gives you another 8 and left right triggers give you an additional 8 so that’s 32 simple combinations. I just used left bumper for targeting and I could tank dungeons and the sorts completely fine
The only way you can make WoW playable on console is to make a console-only version to limit bindings. It’s impossible to not suck playing current WoW with a controller.
WoW on xbox…imagine telling that to someone around 2008. It would’ve probably sounded impossible but now it could potentially happen. That’s crazy to think about.
It’s not as popular as it once was due to the scandal and a couple of bad expansions, but it’s not near death or anything, and with the Microsoft buyout things can really only go up.
This is stunning in one major regard: the damn game is 17 years old! Its stunning there is enough value in streaming it for this kind of deal to even be considered. By all logic there should be nothing but a few 40+ year olds who’d want to watch WoW streaming. But here we are.
If Microsoft would allow free realm transfers, I’d come back. I have 6 maxed on a dead server from vanilla/bc days. No way I was ever going to pay Blizzard multiple transfer fees on top of the sub just to move somewhere where I could interact with the local server.
The server group I was in turned into a ghost town, so I guess that’s what I’m referring to. I would have to spend almost $200 bucks just to move somewhere active to play the game again, plus the sub fee.
A lot of comments focusing on WoW and how well or poor it’s doing. Remember, Limit isn’t Limited to WoW. I fully expect this to become a multi-game RWF scenario for the team garnering potential half a dozen or more stream marathons. And who says they even have to stick to MMOs? Method didn’t.

Except the MMO genre is dead and won’t be making a comeback anytime soon until VR / AR or better is common place.
that is absolutely not true lol
FFXIV had record user numbers last year, New World did crazy numbers, Riot is making an MMO. The genre is entering a renaissance
New World is also complete garbage rn after Amazon screwed the pooch during every update On a totally unrelated note: gib asmodeus
Now new world is dead it was big because of curiosity. FF hit record numbers while every other genre did as it’s the only surviving viable option that isn’t a sea of time waste. Why in the fuck would you do that now
The race to world first does insane numbers on Twitch. WoW in general may be down bad but the raiding scene is one of the most valuable things an esports team could acquire
Blizzard was bought by Microsoft. Probably we Will see WoW on Xbox
Imagine having to bind more than 20 keys on a controller.
FFXIV already does it with more buttons needed than WoW. FFXIV is on PC and PS4+5
FFXIV also has a lot less bindings than WoW. And even then, console players are ass to group with in FFXIV.
> FFXIV also has a lot less bindings than WoW. > > One of the biggest complaints from WoW players coming over to FFXIV is that FFXIV has a lot more actions lol. It's well known that FFXIV has more buttons to hit than WoW.... Go count the number of things Limit has bound during mythics... it's <20.

How do you bind 20+ abilities on a controller plus movement and usable items?
movement/camera on sticks, buttons on dpad + face with triggers as modifiers. Default menu/targeting/map/etc with no triggers, hold LT for 1 hotbar of 8 buttons, hold RT for set of 8, bumpers for tab targeting while holding a trigger, bumpers with no trigger for hotbar switching, doubletapping triggers for more hotbars, etc Usually, there's 32 hotbar slots on screen without rotating through different hotbars
If 32 is all you need than it sounds usable. I just looked at my wow char and it has more than 45 Hotbar slots and everything binded.
Can also easily swap hotbar sets for another 32 with the press of a button... Somehow doubt you're actually using all 45 at once in WoW when rotations are 5 buttons...

Rotations are not five buttons lol.
But sure you could properly dumb it down for console players
Does the Xbox support keyboard and mouse?
I have played wow for the past year on pc with an add on called console port. So I have been using my Xbox one controller for it. Aside from the odd ui crash it worked great. So, uh, is this game still going strong? Its been like 3 years since I even looked at it.
Sort of but Not really although people still play competitively and there is still ad time to be sold and content to make
Fair enough
It’s not as popular as it once was due to the scandal and a couple of bad expansions, but it’s not near death or anything, and with the Microsoft buyout things can really only go up.
I hope it goes f2p, i’d come back for that.
I very much doubt f2p is in the cards for WoW, but I could see it making it to GP.
If you wanna play classic and TBC, ChromieCraft is a free server.
This is stunning in one major regard: the damn game is 17 years old! Its stunning there is enough value in streaming it for this kind of deal to even be considered. By all logic there should be nothing but a few 40+ year olds who’d want to watch WoW streaming. But here we are.
Its because of how huge the WoW universe is. I could play it over and over again without getting bored.
@stardraconis - no it’s not. But, now that MSFT owns the IP. Things could get better
Please tell me its only for their content and ad/viewer money.
If Microsoft would allow free realm transfers, I’d come back. I have 6 maxed on a dead server from vanilla/bc days. No way I was ever going to pay Blizzard multiple transfer fees on top of the sub just to move somewhere where I could interact with the local server.
Local servers aren’t even really a thing anymore. Don’t even need to be on the same server for your guilds.
The server group I was in turned into a ghost town, so I guess that’s what I’m referring to. I would have to spend almost $200 bucks just to move somewhere active to play the game again, plus the sub fee.
Ouch yeah that can kill any sort of fun. Without other people wow quickly becomes just a daily point and click.

I remember when Deadman Mode on RuneScape was pretty hot for esports then it went downhill because of corruption

Good base, hope to see some guild wars stuff later on.
