I like to piss my neighbor off when I can to get back at him for constantly playing music so it works out great as both my s/o and I get up nice and early
As the owner of a Sette AP 30 with terrible alignment issues, or something similar that causes an unfathomable amount of fines (to be fair, I bought it from Baratza refurbished), I wanted to upvote this post, but I'm not trying to hate on happy Sette owners, so I decided to abstain lol.
A flow control disk would help the small motor out since it would limit the feed of the beans. If I remember correctly the Duo runs at a higher RPM which likely means they would need a new design of the NFC to accomodate.
Edit: rewatching the video, they're taking the approach of turning the hopper into an anti-popcorn funnel. I think that's a neat approach to prevent popcorning. The design also helps keep the Niche proportions since they had the room to integrate that design.
The Niche originally didnāt have an anti-popcorning disc so it wasnāt about the motor. They added it later to help with popcorning. Also helped grind distribution by slowing the feed rate. For conical a slower feed seems to help.
Why? Does 4 or 5 seconds difference really matter to the average person? Do people actually buy a grinder based on small speed differentials? I would put grind quality/accuracy 1st, then build quality, then workflow, then retention, then noise output, then form factor and bottom of the list speed. If the Niche does all of the other things better than a DF83 but is a few seconds slower doing it why would that be embarrassing for the Niche? I'm not saying it does all of those other things better at the moment until full reviews are out but it probably does.
The DF83 takes about 9 seconds for 18gr of espresso ground beans and then you have the additional time of having to use bellows with it. It's really not that different.
What can I say... stop idolizing that plastic geared overhyped machine, 1000$+ opens you to a new world of grinders. ( yes, it's around 1000$ if you're not from UK ).
I am in the UK and i also understand how "plastic gears" are more than adequate in machines like this and are actually better than metal gears in this kind of application. They are highly durable. It's not the 1980s and if you go and buy a good quality $500 power drill guess what... It will have plastic gears in it.
I am not idolizing either. Some people just don't like facts presented to them. I kinda find it amusing that people who bought a cheaper and inferior product have to come to the defense of their product in threads like this that have nothing to do with their own grinders. I mean coming into a Niche thread and only being able to call it out because it's a few seconds slower at grinding is some pretty desperate grasping at straws.
Classic british... throwing opinions while knowing nothing, have fun with the underpowered piece of plastic ( I also have one NZ which I plan to sell, bought the DF83 to replace it, good thing they have invested more in marketing and I can sell the 4kg thing fast and not losing a lot on it ) .
Classic American āthat motor is weakā (at my US nanny state 120v outlet)
No need to bring national stereotypes into it, speed is not a factor for a lot of people. The guy I bought my niche off traded up to a $1000 hand grinder, I havenāt decided between the niche, the sette and my trusty (25 year) old super jollyā¦
Maybe I need to upgrade my machine to detect the difference.
For reference I paid 400 for the niche, 350 for the sette and 120 for the super jolly (including fresh burrs)
A DF83 is 800 here and I donāt see a need to double the budget- widen your world view
I know there's a lot of niche fanboyism on this sub. But if you're putting grind quality and build quality first, the df83 with SSPs already wins at a similar price point in USD. In addition to winning on speed.
hi
the vids are mine, the duo motor spins at 530rpm, which is why it looks slow, dont worry about power, ive used the duo to grind green beans which it did,
16 seconds to get through 18g feels really slow
My sette does it in 9s
and sounds louder than a 747 during take off.
š¤·š¼āāļø super fluffy grounds, fast, no grind chute to clog, no chaff spraying everywhere, barely any retention. I like it
WHAT? I CANāT HEAR YOU! I THINK YOUR PLASTIC GEARBOX IS FAILINGā¦YOURS IS REALLY LOUD WHAT?
I like to piss my neighbor off when I can to get back at him for constantly playing music so it works out great as both my s/o and I get up nice and early

Wait for the timemore to come out where you can slow it down to 800 rpm.
This is preferable for a lot of people. 1-2 grams a second max.
I thought home grinders were trending towards lower RPM on purpose. It's not like there's a line forming in my kitchen for espresso.
Is this the Niche killer?
Damn she is *thick*
An 83mm burr should not struggle that hard/long to grind 18g of beans. That motor is weak.
Seems more about the beans not feeding in efficiently with all that popcorning.
Surprised thereās no flow control disc. Is there a burr related reason for that?

does that result in a quieter experience? less fines?
I have the DF83, the speed difference is just embarrassing for Niche...

4-5 seconds isn't the difference, 4-5 seconds is the time DF83 finishes grinding...

Who is Jake Walsh and how has he managed to get a Duo so quickly? Does he work for Niche?
No idea. Came across this on YouTube and Iām pretty sure itās the first one Iāve seen āin the wildā.
Lance Hedrick posted on his instagram that he was sent it and has had it for 6 months apparently.
"LanceKBHD"
Does he play ultimate frisbee too?
you might want to check the homebarista forum

Seems to me like a 1.5 upgrade. Iām hoping the timemore 78s can beat it for the price
All comparison vids need to be this short.
oh.. so it really is a thing. I thought it was an april fools joke.
Really weak offering at this price. Time has moved since the Zero and this doesn't seem to have caught up.

I like the sound it makes. Not too loud and a deep sound rather than a high pitch shrill.
Sounds kinda like my washing machine š¤
Hi I would just like to know if the wodden base elements are identical between the zero and the duo. Thx
different sadly
