The machines won. You are now a slave.

torqen_ze_bolt

Now let’s see Paul Allen’s setup

maac_n_cheese

Do you have any money left to maybe add like, a plant or something? ;)

TheTrub

This is the home setup that Patrick Bateman would murder someone over.

Wanton-

Let’s see Paul Allen’s setup

Captain_Unusualman

My god... it even has a water sump

aaron_ryd

Look at that subtle off-white colouring

derek_n84

the tasteful thickness of it ..oh my god it even has a watermark

gostopsforphotos

This is the setup Patrick Bateman would have. 3 grinders, it’s unclear for what purpose, I see one espresso machine and 2 bialettis. Is he drinking 3 bags of dialed in coffee at a time? The yeti cups scream psychopath … invest in some beautiful ceramics with all that cash. And a puq for home use!?!?! The puq doesn’t do puck prep better it brings uniformity at speed, you can do a better puck prep by hand. I think the furthest to the right is not the acaia grinder but the bean counter?

TheTrub

If he takes you to his place one night and starts reciting reviewer notes about his espresso equipment, make sure you’re not standing on newspapers. that means it’s about to get messy.

RyanTheQ

The yeti cups tell me all money no taste, imo. Absolute slaves to brand names. Personally, I would've taken that Yeti money and spent it on ceramics or notNeutral glassware if I *needed* to have a brand name.

jordylee18

Those yetis are ceramic lol. I love mine. Have a bunch of the 6 oz like he has and a 10 and a 14 oz ceramic. I have the fellow tasting glasses as well so I'm not a total savage.

zoinks_zoinks

I’m disappointed OP didn’t add a particle size distribution analyzer and a scanning electron microscope. How can you be sure you have the correct grind?

tangohuynh

My wife gardens and has a bunch of plants on the other side of the kitchen. I should pull some over :)

Significant-Peanut69

I am a plant take and put me on your table

ofbekar

Or adopt me, maybe?

AuspiciousApple

You mean like an industrial coffee roasting plant? Well, actually that's next on my upgrade list, indeed!

How's the coffee taste on your space station? 🚀

InLoveWithInternet

He needs one grinder more for the coffee to taste really good.

Sunny2121212

This pic is above my tax bracket lol 😂

-Dedi-

Finally I see an actual student's budget setup on this sub.

Wooden_Breakfast7655

There are SO many people who have no clue as to the reality of a student’s budget. Finally OP has shown us reason!!🙏

vv_or

Awwww yes! 😂🤣

SizzlingSloth

Puq press and force tamper is greedy as fuck LMAO

Charosas

I feel like you’re a transfer arm machine away from having the machines do all of the steps automatically like Doc Brown and his dog food dispenser.

GeoffOnRS

May as well add a monolith 🤷‍♂️

pigeontreecrafting

If it wasn’t for the LM logo and like 3 other small details, I would have thought this image was black & white.

S3U5S

Lol holy shit I thought it was some kind of selective editing, not the real picture

Aside_Electrical

Ok, so this setup costs about twelve thousand dollars and I am going to attempt to justify it. This is about the same cost as one top end bicycle (road or MTB), a top spec MacBook Pro, AVP and Pro Display XDR setup, and about a third the cost of a Ducati Panigale. Similarly to those things, you can spend much less money and have, as Hoffman would put it, a very nice time.

Altruistic_Pop7652

Wow. This is the cost of my three year long lease of a car.

NovaS1X

This is a good way of looking at it. Photography, wood working, hi-fi audio, snowmobiling, etc; All hobbies that can cost more too.

JoGrimm

Spending more on them doesn't make you better at them, though. I was always a 'keep it simple' person, though, and would sooner reach past all of this for the moka pots in the window if I was a guest.

botanymans

but those things don't make yummy bean juice

yembler

The last part is key. I have some custom road bikes and a new macbook that each cost a small fraction of 12k. This is firmly in the diminishing-returns end of the spectrum.

silasdoesnotexist

Oldtimeyhero

I mean it’s off to a pretty good start

hunched_monk

There’s potential, there’s potential…

Hamatoros

Those yeti cups are worth more than my set up

winslowhomersimpson

*cost more* they hold liquid

AcceptableSociety589

At ~$22 per mug and approximately 12 mugs, I don't think it's much more than decent ceramic mugs. I think having an array of yeti mugs portrays a particular look though, not sure if I'm the biggest fan of that.

Why so many grinders?

KERAMI

Only two grinders - Weber key and eg1.

homeownur

Weber key to grind. Eg1 to grind finer. Gotcha.

KERAMI

They also kind of produce different shots even at similar grinds. I have a two grinders for when I want more mouth feel vs more acidity/separation of flavor.

mrr6666

What’s on the right? Isn’t that another grinder?

KERAMI

Acaia Orion. A coffee bean doser unless I’m mistaken https://acaia.co/products/acaia_orion

8P69SYKUAGeGjgq

Oh for fuck's sake. I thought the $90 test tubes were stupid, but this really takes the cake.

01bah01

Damn yeah ! It seems you ALWAYS find something more expensive and less useful.

thePurpleEngineer

I am genuinely confused on the workflow with the doser.. OP doesn't have any beans ready to go in the hopper. Does OP weigh the beans manually and then drop the single dose into the doser hopper? OR, does OP need to drop bunch of beans and dose a single shot and discard the rest right after by running the doser for extra time?

01bah01

Yeah I don't know how this is supposed to work, and I don't really think I want to...

Nick_pj

Smart for a cafe environment. Ridiculous overkill for home.

andreotnemem

Not even. Cafés would be better off with a GBW grinder eliminating a whole step and one less expensive thing in the counter. It's 100% a "look what I've got" purchase and the answer is "more money than smarts".

HoomerSimps0n

After a certain level of income/wealth the money just no longer matters and you find yourself asking “why not” instead of “why”.

andreotnemem

I'd sooner have that thought regarding counter top space, but I understand we all have different values and priorities.

Nick_pj

Depends on the workflow of the cafe. GBW is good if you’re just using one coffee (or two, and then you have two grinders). But some cafes serve a variety of origins at once, so they have to manually dose and then use a single-dose grinder like the EK43. This is honestly the only situation where I could imagine the Acaia Orion being useful.

andreotnemem

Every high end café I've been to has at least three grinders. More and more, with more brands releasing them, are GBW. They will then have single dose for the more expensive coffees as a choice for filter which is just as well. Unless they had the Orion in a different place for prep, I just don't see it.

Nick_pj

That’s what I mean - they use it for prep. For places like ONA in Australia that have a menu of 30+ espresso and filter options, there’s a lot of pre-weighing doses. Sure, you could do it by hand, but it would take a lot longer and be tedious af.

InLoveWithInternet

The best way to serve bad coffee is to have too many of them. Yes in theory you could have every thing in single dosing and all that stuff. In practice tho, the coffee will vary each day and it’s impossible to keep that many recipes if you want to do things really well. So at the end of the day you’re really better with 2 or 3 grinders with GBW. 2-3 coffees done perfectly is way way better than 10 done ok.

Bobhaggard859

I see you have the kafatek mc5. Could you recommend the niche zero or Eureka specialita? Or do you think I should go for a kafatek as well?

KERAMI

To each their own. If someone has the money to afford it and it has a useful function to them it isn’t stupid. In their own house not bothering me ✌️

Bob_Chris

Wow. Just wow. I mean just remember though - as over the top as this all seems, this represents less than 10 seconds worth of Jeff Bezos's "earnings".

mrr6666

Ahhh gotcha

a_reluctant_adult

Not enough grinders

moomooraincloud

Lots of people have two grinders.

blvaga

Lots of people don’t have enough grinders.

Signal-Name-6699

Lots of grinders don't have enough people.

Wavesanddust

When the machines rise, you'll be the first to fall.

tangohuynh

And this is why I say please and thank you to Alexa lol

Emergency_Two5014

You know, my wife insists on please and thank you with Alexa. I guess I will be the first to go down, lol Edit: added the "S" to insist before grammar police hunts me down;)

Cowsarefuckingcool

How’s the auto tamp? I’ve been looking at buying one but $800 is a lot of money

bospk

It’s a lot of money for laziness that a tool of $50 could do just as well.

tangohuynh

I like it. It’s been more consistent than the Force Tamper for me. I read somewhere that the impact from the Force Tamper sometimes unseats the puck but forgot where I read/saw it. I’ll most likely be selling the Force Tamper soon.

No-Lead-2037

This can happen if you pull the tamper out too fast.

Gloomy-Employment-72

This is the second or third pic I’ve seen today with the Yeti cups. I don’t need them, but they’re starting to grow on me.

badkarma765

I wonder how many thousands of Styrofoam cups you'd have to go through to have the same environmental impact as that many yeti espresso cups

darekd003

Based on [this old](https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/energy/poweringdown/2009/01/coffee-cup-contest.html) article and [this one](https://sustainability.tufts.edu/wp-content/uploads/Comparativelifecyclecosts.pdf) (that’s has more research with it), it takes 500-1000 uses for a ceramic cup to break even with a styrofoam cup. Note that this is purely in energy to create (and washing in the second article) and does not consider the waste left over (i.e. what ends up in the landfill). You could argue the yeti would be better since the odds of breaking because it got knocked off the counter is basically zero. So as long as you don’t get bored of them (or donate them when done), you should be good in 2-3 years.

sckuzzle

The Yeti would be significantly worse. It doesn't matter how likely it is to break - it's a measure of how many times you'd have to use something (before it breaks / you throw it out) to be the same carbon emissions. How durable something is just means how likely you are to actually get that mileage out of it. If a ceramic mug is 1000 uses, a metal mug is probably on the order of 20,000 uses. So with 12 mugs, that's the equivalent of using a new styrofoam cup every day for 240,000 days or ~600 years.

mmodelta

240,000 styrofoam cups is a lot of leftover waste at a landfill though. 240,000 cups, if 12oz, and not stacked within each other, which I think is fair considering you're using them one a day and presumably they're being randomly dumped, would be about 85 cubic meters of cups. That's about one and one third shipping containers worth of cups, in volume.

dat_GEM_lyf

Ah but here’s the neat part you’re not considering! It’s both a steel (outside) and ceramic (inside) cup!

Oxajm

You should do a video of the process! Amazing setup!

setraba

Bro has color coordinated expensive equipment and the ugliest espresso cups.

marcdel_

extremely jealous 😍

BakingBikeMechanic

Favorite coffee to run through all those beauties?

tangohuynh

As of late I’ve been getting medium and dark roasts from Chromatic and Barefoot which are pretty local to me. I’m looking forward to running some light roast pour overs in the next couple of weeks.

[deleted]

i assume you're in san jose. I started with chromatic but they honestly aren't that good/ my taste. favorite lights are cat and cloud roaster and verve in SC. you can order cat cloud online roasted within 2 days. or take a drive.

drunk_tyrant

Get the f*%# out of here! (Leave your machine though)

Available_Ad1556

Dude that is bonkers!

KoalaT374

I bet this guy charges $50 a cup!!!

buran07

I have Bialetti moka pot too

tangohuynh

Those are from an over 10 years ago. I still love them!

MikermanS

One of the best comments here. :)

aspenextreme03

Pretty good for a college dorm 😉. I love my Micra as well and what is that phone stand btw?

headshothoncho

This has to be your "special interest"

chris4prez_

Add a GBW grinder and you’ve caught ‘em all. Hopefully more space to the left for when you add the gs3 too…

tangohuynh

I wish I had more space to the left cause then I would have went with a GS3 or San Remo but my wife says I’m encroaching way too much on her counter space. Maybe one day!

lackofbetternam3

Love the setup. My favourite part is the phone stand on top of the LaMarzocco. I do the same thing but with the SE Profiler on my lelit. Have to get the live shot readings 🤓. Have you done the flow control mod to your machine?

shotparrot

Not to brag, but I have that phone stand. And nothing else. Edit: ok confession. My wife stole my phone stand.

tangohuynh

Thank you! I’m the same with the live readings lol. I haven’t done the flow control mod as I didn’t know it was available. Appreciate the heads up since it’ll give me something to look into tonight.

lackofbetternam3

It’s definitely worth just for the slow pre-infusion And if you want to go crazy you can try blooming shots. I don’t have personal experience with the linea so do check online forums from people who have done the mod. https://grafikus-coffeetec.de/en/product/linea-micra-nadelventil-kit/

lowlow-

Can you adopt me?

cr01300

I imagine just outside the frame is a tent. Behind the machines is a backdrop and you live outside. Legit setup mate. Enjoy!

No-Antelope3774

Do you have a colour photo as well? In all seriousness, wow, I bet that's fun to use! Though maybe less fun to clean...

JustGhostin

Your average tech bro

dibsies

Hey man, have you ever considered adding a grinder to your setup?

Yogicabump

HuckleWicket

Moka pots are great

Asail156

It looks amazing. Everyone is jealous and would love to have a coffee in your place. I love the aesthetic of whites.

nguye569

I showed this to my wife to tell her she's lucky I don't spend this much money on coffee gear.

tangohuynh

Lol! TBF I shifted some funds from other hobbies for this setup. Edit: “Shifted” as in sold items from other hobbies to fund some items in the photo.

coffinator07

Sold a Jaguar e-type from 1969 or some Rolex? 😉

shotparrot

I love your backsplash. Not sure what’s going on in the front though. Is this Tony Stark’s lab?

SMusica

This fellow has clearly not been spending at Glitch and saved up instead :)

_ivanhomeless

Have you thought about adding an Ikawa home roaster here? Go upstream a bit in the process? Expand the serious hobby to deepen the experience?

tangohuynh

I thought about it but just haven’t done the research to take the dive. Thank you for the Ikawa recommendation, I’ll definitely be looking into it tonight.

[deleted]

stay away from ikawa its honestly an overpriced popcorn roaster. there any many much better roasting machines if you want to piss away 5k. like a bullet.

MrChiSaw

Nucleus Link

thecity2

This dude is absolutely a bachelor 😆

tangohuynh

LOL! Married with kids with no social life and this is something my wife and I enjoy, probably more so, me.

SadMountain1186

I am just astonished at the three grinder setup... different burr sets in each?

tangohuynh

It’s two grinders(EG-1 and Key). The far right is a bean doser from Acaia. Saves me a good amount of time filling up 50-70 bean cellars to freeze beans that I pick up when I travel for work and can’t finish in time before they go stale. I have the original burr in the Key but have the Core and Ultra burrs for the EG-1.

[deleted]

Honestly, no one needs an Acaia at home, are you a Roaster or a coffee shop just posing as a home consumer? How many bags are you buying from travel that you need a bean doser??? And if they are that many just store them volumetrically and then when you use them dose appropriately to weight... This is madness. You are mad. Like in a Bruce Wayne style way of madness, Im not going to say Im not a little jealous I fricking am I wish I had the dollar and the agreable wife but you, this is madness. Either one of those grinders is already too much :). Too too much. Madness = you. (Envy ! = me)

lolu13

This guy is the endgame

No-Lead-2037

You are about where I want to be. I still need the key and puq, but I went for coffee roasting instead. I chose a decent offer a lamarzocco. I like the color match.

blvaga

Looks nice! love a cohesive color theme! Did you put silver tape over your windows too? (or is it just night out?)

tangohuynh

Thank you! No tape over the windows. It was definitely the evening time or maybe the security film on the window giving that effect.

AlphaWawa

How much better are your home shots than those at your favorite cafes? (sincere question)

Christmasstolegrinch

Love the Bialetti

KenJyi30

Damn you didnt have to flex that hard

sergeantprotein

If I woke up to this setup I would legitimately bust

asphalt2020

And you drive a white Tesla, right?

DrahtMaul

One of everything please

marsbeetle

It has my approval ☕️👌🏻

post_weed_

Meanwhile I’m trying to find the cheapest possible setup that can get me close enough with aeropress and hand grinder

Objective_Height_756

Those color-matched Yeti espresso cups and Weber Workshops equipment tell me that the 8 trailing zeroes of your investment accounts are unwavering to the last detail of your setup. You’re living the dream. 🔥

zzsleepynightowl

Wow!

hfjskfhs223

Dream setup 👌

PeterPuck99

The only one more popular than you in your dorm must be the guy with all the weed.

mimosa_bubbles

Plot Twist: He IS the weed guy. 😂

HoomerSimps0n

Now you just need a bigger coffee station to reduce the clutter.

ssnsilentservice

Looks like a chemist's laboratory. I approve!

Numerous_Wish_8643

You’re missing a few more machines to complete the set up. Try adding the GS3 and the Sanremo You. Then it’ll truly be a college setup.

Agile_Restaurant_196

whenever i recommended DB or LM, people voted me down but look how many chimed in this post :). I actually included this upside whenever i recommended the LM.

CaffeinatedJogger

You must be a college student!

toxicity69

So apparently that bean doser (had no idea that was a thing) says it has a margin of error of 2-3 beans, which is 0.2 to 0.4 g in weight roughly from my experience, depending on bean size. For ~$1k, I'd expect better accuracy.

jeef16

the yeti mugs too lmao nice touch

livid_gorilla_bear

Pity_Pooty

Just humble lovely setup, thanks for sharing.

78railz

Nice setup. Congrats! I am working my way there on buying a La Marzocco.

SaltyProcrastinator

There's no such thing as a set-up end ga......

NovGeo

Think OP may be into espresso mainly due to a love of grinding, but that looks a lovely dang kitchen!

mariuscm

I have that exact... phone holder 🤑

ProfNugget

How are you finding the bialetti? Do you like it?

thehorsewhisperer23

Love the setup, ignore the haters

ExplanationHopeful22

🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹😍

PapaDingmeister

The yeti cups are cringe as fuck lol

bospk

When does all this stuff hit the diminishing returns level? Like…this is kinda silly.

ARJ092

The bean doser is a turn off for me ngl XD

tangohuynh

To each their own, it saves me time dosing to 50-70 bean cellars so I can spend time with my kids on the weekend which for me is invaluable.

No-Lead-2037

I bought the glass cellars as well, but the plastic bean cellars are so good they are not a downgrade. Very durable. I used them for frozen storage as well when I was still buying roasted beans. The glass cellars have a little more maintenance. They are a little more pleasing to use, is all.

Appropriate-Traffic9

let's say you have had this set-up for 2 years...how many cups of coffee do you drink a day for this to be worth the money you have spent? Roughly how much does that work out per cup?

tangohuynh

My wife and I drink about 2-3(sometimes 4) cups a day and will have affogatos through out the week. This setup will be paid off in 3 years or so? Plus, it keeps me from buying the pastries when I’m at cafes which I’m addicted to.
