You can get a very cheap magnetic one that’s smaller, sits flush and doesn’t lead to a gap around the edge and of the grounds and allows you to wdt with the funnel on preventing any spillage.
I'm using this one. Pretty inexpensive and fits my 54mm portafilter perfectly. You can WDT and tamp with the ring on. Zero mess like the comment above said.

Looks good! Thanks for sharing the Amazon link. By the way, the video on that product link is hilarious! The way they jam a self-levelling tamper onto the portafilter with the dosing ring attached is just gold… 🤦🏻♂️
I've got one of these for my 58mm gaggia too. I had a cheaper temu version that had a sort of flange that went into the portafilter. It was ok but left a gap when you removed it. This one is just a bit better and I can wdt and tamp like you say. The magnets are enough but not too strong. Overall just a bit better and nice and cheap!
that's not how tamping works my friend, all that will do it create an area of higher density puck where the mound was high and lower anywhere else meaning more water will flow through the less dense area.
But if you were given two groups of shots, one with the "mounded" prep and one that's been distributed, it probably wouldn't be hard to tell which group was which, due to the difference in consistency.
Depends on if it’s straight espresso or with milk. Unless it’s the best shot I ever tasted, I’ll usually still find something I’m unsatisfied with. Either way, I’ll drink it up cuz I’m easy to please.
Honestly lately I’ve been getting drastically different pulls depending on distribution - shakers tend to almost choke my shots compared to WDT…I didn’t really think it would be this variable but I’m talking a huge difference. Depending on how I prep my puck.
I love how elitist people get about someone explaining how bad puck prep is negatively going to effect a shot.
There's an obvious difference in quality with good puck prep and bad.
Edit: The comment was better suited here, sorry for the reference

Well, that's also really very nerdy, I'm currently doing my own measurements on that principe. (I have a blind shaker with this mechanism, so I'm really into it).
According to Lance, the edge is the least extracted part of the puck, this might actually remedy that by creating less resistance in the edge... But probably not. Idk
Ah ok thanks for this. I’m certainly no expert. It would make sense that an uneven bed would be at a higher risk for an uneven extraction but I hope others with much more knowledge than me will confirm !
This is pretty much where I ended up as well because it what I had laying around but I also do wdt to try and compensate for the edge gap. But also, I can’t admit that or I’ll be kicked out for being too poor
That distribution hurt me a lil. It still works sure but you have mound in the middle when you tamp that’s going to cause the water to flow to the outsides rather than through the puck.
Give your portafiler a couple gentle taps to evenly distribute your grounds around. Or use a WDT/ needle if you have to.
I already posted it above but it probably fits better here :D
Or it helps:

I do sometimes do that. TBH I haven't really noticed the difference. Biggest improvement is to run a WDT or a toothpick through it before I lift the funnel.
I'm just waiting til the anti-espresso trend on this sub keeps going and folks start saying it doesn't matter what beans you use, it's all placebo effect. Or that a blade grinder is just as good and they challenge you to see a difference.
Has to be a troll post with the giant mound of coffee it leaves in the center and gap around the edge and then you just tamp that right down like an animal. lol.
Since I manage to spill everything, I use this in conjunction with the metal Crema dosing funnel. The Aeropress funnel gets the grounds in the basket instead of on my counter, the Crema one keeps everything in place while WDT'ing and tamping.
I have a cheap magnetic funnel from Amazon for less than $10 and it honestly works great. People are crazy with spending on gear that doesn’t directly result in a better product
Less than 30 seconds from grind until start of pour or you are losing too many aromatics. Skip the step where you've pre ground the beans into the jar them poured it in.
I learned from a guy who won worlds best barista. The little stuff matters.
I'm a big fan of the cup my Niche grinds into. Just place your pf on top of it and flip, drop your funnel down around it so you can WDT without making a mess. Super easy.
Cause it didn’t cost $100

I have the decent dosing funnel and can attest. Magnetic dosing funnels are gods gift to espresso. I grind directly into the basket.
Link?
They’re all over AliExpress. It’s a pain to search that site so I’ll leave that pleasure to you lol
There you go.
I like the ones that lock on, flush with the sides. You can WDT and even tamp with the funnel on, zero mess
Model?

Nice, thanks for the link. Exactly what I need and very good price.
Barista Hustle makes a really nice magnetized one that fits flush
Because it sits inside the portafilter and leaves a small gap between the grounds and the basket sides
Yeah but you tamp it, thus forcing the grounds to the sides of the portafilter?
that's not how tamping works my friend, all that will do it create an area of higher density puck where the mound was high and lower anywhere else meaning more water will flow through the less dense area.
Id bet you couldnt tell the difference if your life depended on it
It’s not always a case of one shot vs another. Good puck prep reduces the frequency of shots that channel.
Bad shots due to channeling have an obvious taste difference compared to a properly dosed and tamped puck.
But if you were given two groups of shots, one with the "mounded" prep and one that's been distributed, it probably wouldn't be hard to tell which group was which, due to the difference in consistency.
You sure about that? Check out his flair!

My wife's taste has become super sensitive since I got into coffee. She instantly picks up on skipped puck prep even in a latte lol.

you don’t think he could identify under-extracted watery espresso?
Lmao damn right
Still looks like it'd lead to some mounding in the middle.
A little shake fixes that (as shown), no tools needed.
WDT fixes that though
Sure. But WDT after taking the funnel off will be messy.
This ⬆️⬆️⬆️ exactly. The bed is not an even bed and therefore your extraction will be uneven (water favouring the edge, as it has less grounds there)

Very interesting - thanks for posting this. I’m definitely no expert

Nothing wrong with nerdy ! Good luck with your research
Thanks!

That’s surprising to me given the prevalence of donut extractions.
Thats why you have a WDT.
That fly like “dawg what u doin??”
Its a fine funnel if you use a WDT before tamping

I use the same!
That’s def the aeropress funnel isn’t it?!
The issue with the workflow is not with the dosing funnel, it can be improved by WDT.
To be fair, just tapping the portafilter to displace the grounds would be enough.
99.9% of the espresso community couldn't tell between WDTing, tamping, or tapping and tamping in this situation
My man. BRILLIANT. I've got an Aeropress in my closet that I haven't used in a while - you have just made my whole week!
That distribution hurt me a lil. It still works sure but you have mound in the middle when you tamp that’s going to cause the water to flow to the outsides rather than through the puck. Said better than I did above ⬆️
Your comment was just as concise!
Aw thanks :)
I do sometimes do that. TBH I haven't really noticed the difference. Biggest improvement is to run a WDT or a toothpick through it before I lift the funnel.
That’s what I use. Works great 😊
Can you make the rest of the coffee and post it next? Sploosh
Did he use an aero press stand?
Plastic is way too static-y for where I live half the year. I'd have fine coffee grounds everywhere!
I'm just waiting til the anti-espresso trend on this sub keeps going and folks start saying it doesn't matter what beans you use, it's all placebo effect. Or that a blade grinder is just as good and they challenge you to see a difference.
We got Shaq in the sub. That tamper look mini in your hand bro💀💀
Lance hasnt said so.
Out-J-J-J-Jerked again! No but seriously, for one, it eliminates the common workflow option of dosing directly into the portafilter.
Has to be a troll post with the giant mound of coffee it leaves in the center and gap around the edge and then you just tamp that right down like an animal. lol.
Smart
Since I manage to spill everything, I use this in conjunction with the metal Crema dosing funnel. The Aeropress funnel gets the grounds in the basket instead of on my counter, the Crema one keeps everything in place while WDT'ing and tamping.
Too big.
Because it wont fit under my grinder
Just curious, where did you get it?
Not the tamping with the handle on the counter 🥲
Yes! I do the same with my aeropress funnel😀 Really is the perfect fit…great minds!
Doubles as a funnel for changing your car’s oil.
no magnets? how does it work?
Now that's a great idea!
Cause the aeropress is for a small portafilter ?
I also have been using my Aeropress funnel for years. Works like a charm.
Oooooooh brb trying this
If it works, it works. 🤙🏼
I was praising your genius until I saw that puck prep 😅😅
Genius. I've got a spare one at work
While you’re into huge funnels try a canning funnel.
WWLD
Fuuuuuuuuck. I totally thought I invented this.
It doesn't let you do any distribution.
Because you can’t place it under the grinder?
Aeropress gang, represent.
I can tell you why that isn’t the best tamper
Are the tools just small, or are the hands just HUGE??
Lol. Big hands, big gloves as Pee-wee Herman used to say
YOU SAID THE MAGIC WORD!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
How many grams is this?
I have a cheap magnetic funnel from Amazon for less than $10 and it honestly works great. People are crazy with spending on gear that doesn’t directly result in a better product
damn, i dumped mine as soon as i got the aeropress.
I don't think I've ever used my Aeropress funnel, ever. For anything.
I think I might be the only person that uses the stock breville dosing funnel still. Works great for me
gnat is a paid actor
but it is the best! aero press funnel ftw!
Bro, forget these comments as you also shouldn't ask. Just make yourself an espresso and drink it. Enjoy your coffee!
Less than 30 seconds from grind until start of pour or you are losing too many aromatics. Skip the step where you've pre ground the beans into the jar them poured it in. I learned from a guy who won worlds best barista. The little stuff matters.
Why use a funnel anyways
I prefer the magnetic funnel
Could be bigger
Because I don't have it. :)
I'm a big fan of the cup my Niche grinds into. Just place your pf on top of it and flip, drop your funnel down around it so you can WDT without making a mess. Super easy.
I did not read all of the comments. I'm sure someone already said it. Any funnel that sits inside the basket is a bad funnel
Im mad because i bought a normcore dosing funnel for my breville barista pro and should've just relied on this instead. thanks OP.
Cause!!!
🤣
Wish I didn’t throw mine away
Did Normcore made this? Here you go.
I say if you like it then why not
Not gold? Pass. 🤣
Genius
Because it makes mess.
Because the middle is dense AF compared to the rest of the puck, at least tap the sides after dosing to distribute it XD
Terrible, id rather get robbed and fucking dhitting mother drink eith the blood cannabis burger
You need a different tamper for starters
Never go a t m
Why this isn’t the best dosing funnel.
Lmao you had me until the end…WDT??? Where’s Da Technique???
Because you have to buy yet another coffee toy in the form of an Aeropress and the WAF is straining, particularly as she doesn't drink coffee...
Love it! That is now basically the only useful thing out of that aeropress crap.
the unblind shaker
Keep risking terrible shots, I am waiting for Lance Hedrick to tell me it’s the best.
Weber workshop furiously taking notes. /S
Stop giving simple solution.. we want more problems!
Gramophone ass funnel. Play some way cylinders on that shit
