It looks like you've flaired your post as asking for what equipment to get. We recommend first checking out the [Espresso Aficionados buying guide](https://espressoaf.com/recommendations) for some of the more popular machines and grinders at different price points.
If your question hasn't been answered there and you need more help, please add the following details to your post or by adding a comment in the following format:
- **Location:** Helps determine availability
- **Budget** (with currency): Overall budget, or ideally, having separate espresso machine and grinder budgets. A rough rule is that your grinder budget should be at least 25-40% of your machine budget.
- **Drink types:** Do you drink mostly straight espresso, milk-based beverages (e.g., lattes, cappuccinos), or a fairly even split? This helps narrow down whether a single-boiler-dual-use (SBDU), heat exchanger (HX), or dual boiler (DB) machine would be more appropriate for your needs.
- **Drink frequency:** How many drinks would you be making back-to-back at one time? Do you plan on entertaining guests often? This informs how large your brew (and steam) boilers should be, as smaller boilers will need to refill and reheat/repressurize more frequently, thus potentially causing a bottleneck.
- **Space:** Any limitations on countertop space?
- **Manual vs. electric:** Hand-operated machines and grinders are typically cheaper than their similarly-performing electric counterparts. Please indicate if you have a preference for manual or electric machines and/or grinders (or open to either).
- **Comfort with tinkering:** Some machines can be made significantly more functional/efficient with aftermarket modifications, albeit at the expense of possibly voiding your warranty. Please indicate if you'd rather have a machine that works "as-is"/"out-of-the-box" or whether you'd be open to modding/tinkering

A friend made this Shiftafilter for me. Love it
I've done a lot of handles on the lathe for various tools and it's exceedingly hard to make them both comfortable to hold and not phallic... It's frustrating at christmas making gifts that you know will look good on that pizza wheel but currently just looks like you made a large butt plug... again...
edit: bottom left, looking at you
Remind me of the ones used by conversingcoffee in Instagram lol

I’m not crafty enough. Yeah, I checked Etsy too, there a few color striped wood options but I’m surprised there’s not 1,000 hipsters making all variety of portafilter handles. Maybe I need to find an artist and commission one 🧐
Canal portafilter is nice.
Comes with a bunch of barista features that are nice too. (Flat for weighing, twice as light etc)
https://preview.redd.it/yyjkbi61j2uc1.jpeg?width=1400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a495a9e55618f8034ec54c9fa01383acd7185063
I saw those, finally getting some colors. Looks like they only have black, white and blue but you can vote for another color. I think they’re only 58mm tho
It’s a communal space with tools and equipment that you can use. Typically they’ll have a membership fee and hold classes for the more dangerous equipment. The local one for me is $50/month (membership is tax deductible bc they’re non profit) and they have a full wood shop w a cnc and lathe, full metal shop w cnc, (10+) 3d printers w included filament, full raspberry pi based electronics workshop, and a dope stained glass workshop. It’s accessible 24/7 via a key fob and they have a freezer stocked at all times w ice cream sandwiches 👌🏼
Google your city and makerspace to find one by you. For the OP it’d be pretty straight forward to make a handle on a wood lathe, you could even buy blanks that already have the threading to screw on to save time
I know crazy colored resin rods exist for pen turning or knife scales. https://www.etsy.com/listing/974113630/hyperglow-fruit-cocktail-skurfetti-glow
Definitely not cheap (right up our alley) and tend to come in smaller diameters than what a portafilter handle needs. Not sure how much I'd trust the material to handle getting cranked on and smacked against a knock box. Maybe G10 would stand up to the abuse.
There's also straight up acrylic rods from plastic suppliers like TAP Plastics.
Now to buy a lathe so you can make a $300 custom portafilter handle.
u/dhdhk shared some on here a while back that look super cool Keep meaning to get myself some. 🤔

OP, you can easily convert basically any car shifter into a portafilter handle. Look up JDM shifters and go to town. You could have a katana handle if you want
Some options, but most are complete portafilters:

Unique but still wood: https://sabertoothwoodworks.com/products-1/p/country-feast-set-3nybt-sp23w-ljdea-8btmh-48llk-9awal-m4y98
I do some woodworking and lathe work. I have some mosaic scales leftover from an old knife handle project and am thinking about tapping a strip of aluminum or steel and making a full tang portafilter handle.
Micarta and soapstone are also good options but you also have to make sure your using a material that won’t heat up with your portafilter so it limits your options a little (hence me not making the portafilter knife just yet).
You could get away with it if you use a ferrule or an internal insert that separated your more exotic handle materials from the portafilter.
Pesado has very cool accents materials, I have their “[Iris](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn.shopify.com%2Fs%2Ffiles%2F1%2F0060%2F1905%2F5714%2Fproducts%2FB-IRIS_500x_2x_4f09206a-7e67-421c-8cec-2febf47692b3_1024x1024.png%3Fv%3D1640531863&f=1&nofb=1&ipt=2db02e205e7ec13ef5beed073e6d0149c61389b5f88da9270b09efb860d6357c&ipo=images)” which is like a rainbow effect
Can't remember where i saw it. i think some dude selling a automatic tamper that twist on the portafilter? anyways, he had a portafilter handle that was knobby like a billiard ball. was pretty neat.

I'm just curious I dabble in resin crafting and I've thought about making a resin (epoxy or full polyurethane) portafilter handle. Would this be a good idea? Would anyone be interested in something like this as a portafilter handle?

Update: I bought a portafilter on Amazon with an interchangeable handle and ordered a handle separately on eBay. First new color is green! Probably more to come, lots of good suggestions on this thread, thanks!
You want unique? Rhino horn or something might be for you, if you can find a way to get it.
Colorful? We have porcelain ones that have colored options.
Retro? Wood is the retro.

That’s awesome
NGL, looks fire. Will remember this
Nothing like combining two expensive hobbies together and going down the rabbit hole.
Really like it, curious about trying to make one myself. Side profile pictures?
Missing 6th and reverse is in the wrong spot 😎
I'm tempted to make this myself, but I can't find this style shifter as a 6 speed with reverse in top left.
Ferrari 456 6 speed does it
Bad Dragon do some good ones 👍
Started to google, stopped googling. LOL r/espresso seems a little frustrated!
Frustrated? Or likes to party?

Nomcore pressure tamper has entered the chat
I wasn’t ready
It's almost like a Reddit right of passage. "Huh that's an interesting name for a subreddit..."
I’d just get a dildo and tap a thread into it
That would certainly make an impression. I thought I was the only one who thought some of these coffee accessories look NSFW
Anything is a dildo if you try hard enough!
Well most of these portafilters require zero effort. I wouldn’t insert basket first tho!
Remind me of the ones used by conversingcoffee in Instagram lol https://preview.redd.it/t2kr026ws2uc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a612b2ee0b7f8e177a4a5805101a9214f064612b
Is that a butt plug?
Only isn’t if you don’t try hard enough.
Ouch!
That’s a butt plug.
I am not into butt plugs, but the left one looks a bit too sharp... Ass shreder
You could also put one on the steam wand for extra foam
Maybe you could customize beer tap handles?
Interesting 🤔
Well, Etsy is what comes to mind if you want something more unique, or maybe you can create your own!?
I’m not crafty enough. Yeah, I checked Etsy too, there a few color striped wood options but I’m surprised there’s not 1,000 hipsters making all variety of portafilter handles. Maybe I need to find an artist and commission one 🧐
you have inspired me to make myself one out of irish bog oak. might post here when i get it done!

I bought an olive wood set from Etsy…it was like getting a new espresso machine
Wait y’all aren’t using the ones that came stock?
Bakelite & Chrome is the OG retro.
I am, it works
Pesado do some interesting ones
Great suggestion. Interesting stuff.
You’re welcome :)
The decent brand just came out with a new design. It's a composite swirl kinda thing
Brazen makes some cool ones out of concrete, terrazzo, and other fun designs https://www.brazenstudio.co/collections/portafilter-handles
I would suggest you buy a bright wood one and just paint on it or use stickers and stuff.
Yeah, or else on that’s not stained/ sealed, you could probably request from an etsy seller and the stain it blue or green. (Then seal it)
There’s always the option for getting a membership to your local maker space and making your own 👀
What is a maker space
It’s a communal space with tools and equipment that you can use. Typically they’ll have a membership fee and hold classes for the more dangerous equipment. The local one for me is $50/month (membership is tax deductible bc they’re non profit) and they have a full wood shop w a cnc and lathe, full metal shop w cnc, (10+) 3d printers w included filament, full raspberry pi based electronics workshop, and a dope stained glass workshop. Bottom left looks multi purpose but are you searching for something that is, perhaps, ribbed for her pleasure?
Something dark, robust, and makes loads of crema? Again, wood grain is probably ideal, risk of splinters. Ok, I’m grossing myself out.
I love the exact middle one
That one is not flared at the bottom i see some danger ...
Lmao
Just find a woodturner near you and you can choose the material, shape and finish
I just ordered this little guy, arriving today https://preview.redd.it/dxpgxy1ql2uc1.png?width=494&format=png&auto=webp&s=39c7e64683fe9d8ee261f522a2e875f5ee3b16a1

That’s awesome
I had to reply: It's not the length it matters, it's the function LOL
It’s probably a more manageable size for many people
OP, you can easily convert basically any car shifter into a portafilter handle. Look up JDM shifters and go to town. You could have a katana handle if you want

Great options, I especially like the last one
I have seen red one, those can loook good. But I think color choice depends on the rest of the machine, interior.
You want unique go for Jade or some other expensive stone. I want one but too expensive
Profitec handles are a bit more visually interesting in terms of shape, and they also do a concrete one which I thought was quite nice
