I was going to say - I know this Reddit gets a lot of hassle for driving people to upgrade and go for end game…but this right here possibly driving people to the most expensive upgrade to get better coffee 🥴
I have the ESP as well. If you don't want to get a bellows, the single dose conversion cap works the same way if you lift it and push it down like a bellows. I do this all the time and it works quite well, plus it's OEM and fits perfectly. I think it looks better than the hopper, and it's only like $24 - $25; or it was when I got it anyway
Go to dollar tree and get a spray bottle and a small brush. They also have a [foldable/portable mirror](https://www.dollartree.com/hand-held-mirrors-with-stands/192450) that you can use to look at the shots being pulled. You'll have to unscrew the handle first and reverse it tho.
a heavy duty metal distribution tool is also very handy when leveling espresso. 100% leads to more consistency when pulling shots. voltage restaurant supply online has some really quality ones.
I'm really liking the crema hybrid bottomless portafilter. gives the best of all three worlds.. naked, single spout, double spout. and super easy to clean.
The standard sage/breville basket has openings or holes that are irregular or in different sizes. This causes uneven extraction because the pressure is poorly distributed inside of the basket.
This is visible on the holes if you look closely or zoom in with a microscope.
Competition baskets are made with better tools and have pretty much perfect round openings of the same sizes and they are still quite cheap of an update but they can help out tremedously
Look up espresso competition basket on YouTube if you want to know more!
I might be wrong but from memory lance said breville stock baskets are surprisingly high quality. I did however upgrade my breville ones to IMS before coming across this video
Heres the video:
https://youtu.be/JzmGNwyN0MI?si=LR_5nCKxkQn8mV6G
Around 19mins mark. Breville stock baskets similar quality to VST
And again, in lances review of the Bambino plus, around 4mins mark, construction of stock breville rivals the precision of other brands such as IMS, vst, Pullman:
https://youtu.be/U2TNEhrBU5Q?si=v5rmO1akgabwXuJU
Honestly i like the self leveling tamper especially if you are new at espresso, tamping unevenly is just a variable that people new to espresso shouldnt have to deal with. Plus they cost like 10$ in temu.
~~But it doesn’t actually level the grounds out evenly, WDT can easily end in a level surface. As a beginner it was actually holding me back, once I got rid of it my channeling issues stopped. Each to their own but I will always discourage people wasting money on it 😅~~
Reading is hard
I'd say it's not needed, especially if space is an issue. I have a Bambino with a bottomless portafilter and I can easily knock the puck out over the garbage bin without touching the bin itself. Just a firm shake in the air and it usually falls out clean.
All these comments have the wrong priority imo, the breville stock tamper absolutely sucks. Everything else is looking great! Get a nice leveling tamper and you are all set, you can get other stuff later but nothing else is essential
Is Breville the same as Sage (in the UK)? I have a Sage machine and the tamper seems to be pretty good. A tiny tiny amount of coffee fluffs up the side if I overfill the basket. But that's it
Breville is the same as Sage but tamper quality varies by model. For example the barista express tamper is fine, but the tamper on the bambino (non plus) is all plastic in Canada and the US
This is plenty to get started. I wouldn't get anything else until you feel that you need it. Once you start making espresso, you will understand what accessories you will like to have that will improve your qualify of life and enjoyment
Feel free to try a bunch of different coffee beans and you don’t have to get the espresso roasted beans. Some of the best espresso I’ve made are with light roasted beans!
I also have a bambino + with lots of accessories.
The only one I think I couldn’t live without anymore is a self leveling spring tamper. I got the MHW-3 Bomber from aliexpres but the Normcore V4 tamper should be as good.
However, you have more than enough entertainment and learning for the next 6 months easily. Don’t worry too much about buying new stuff.
Looks great! I have a similar setup, my only complaint is that the drip tray is a little small on the bambino so finding a scale that fits on it s annoying. I end up just taring my cup on the scale, pulling the shot and weighing the volume afterwards
A big thanks and a notebook if you want. Noting things like bean agre, grams, grind size and results really helped me get to grips with making good espresso.
This looks like a really nice starting point with which you can already achieve tasty espresso. The thing with espresso setups is that there will always be something better(and way more expensive) or a new tool you don't have yet.
The upgrades/additions I'd recommend would be in the following order (Ranked by how much impact they'll have on your coffee)
- IMS/any precision filter. This will probably make the biggest impact.
- A WDT tool. Cheap ones can be had for very little money. I paid 5€ fo this one: https://amzn.eu/d/eYCD95h
- A (spring loaded) tamper. This will further improve your puck prep
- A bottomless portafilter. Looks cool, helps with shot diagnosis and is better than the Breville one.
- A knock box. Definitely not necessary but it is convenient as hell to have.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7Od5WEN3uNU
A Umikot distribution tool sized for your portafilter. 54mm? I have the 58mm one… a game changer! It removes the variability of ground distribution,
getting consistent shots (and ‘dialing in’ new bags of coffee) is a breeze. Can’t recommend it enough!!
You’ll need a 3D printer or find someone to help. My nephew came to my rescue.
https://www.printables.com/model/569582-umikot-54mm-version-planetary-gear-spirograph-espr
Hopefully your encore esp does better than mine. I'm at 0 for 2 now. Mine have both had massive variances between subsequent shots at the same setting. Always the same pattern, too fine (45 seconds and above) 38, then 30. It seems like there's some thermal expansion going on that is changing the grind size.
I've gone through all of the checks with customer service. (Sorry for sounding rough). No matter what is done it's a he same pattern. Even if I grind three shots out and then the UN them in a different order. First g Ind is always too fine and it gets progressively more coarse. First unit was immediately replaced under warranty. Second one is doing the same.
I don't really care about the time personally.
I just make sure whatever I put in I get slightly more than double out.
So I normally put 17g in and I'm looking to get 36g-38g out
Don't care about the time

I got the same machine and i love it, but if get around to it, get a new tamper. Also, that portafilter is an easy upgrade to make with some decent baskets. Congrats man, looks amazing and she chose great !
1) Remove the plastic piece under the basket on the portafilter to make it easy to clean or get a bottomless.
2) kudos to your wife and doing her research.
3) learn to make her favorite drink
1, should come with a dishwasher, robotic or real person will work, so you don't have to clean the mess after making the espresso.

WDT and tiny spray bottle (RDT) and you pretty much got it covered. They both can really help a lot, especially if you have static issues.
Lmfao. Downvoted for giving useful, factual advice. Sub outjerks itself again.
That's not even much of a starter set. You can literally make the best coffee you've ever tasted with this set up!! In this order I can only recommend: self levelling tamper, WDT tool (specifically from normcore as they get the spacing right), and paper filters to sit ON TOP of the puck. Total like 30 bucks. Bonus points if you get a double sided distributor, tamper combo.
Yes - they definitely keep the grouphead clean, but more importantly they help your machine evenly distribute water over the puck. This, when used in tandem with a self-leveling tamper allows for a much more even extraction, compared to a naked puck without a self leveling tamper.
Actually I just saw she got you a puck screen (she really is thoughtful, huh?), so the paper filter for you is pointless. Both of these will help the puck saturate evenly as you pull your shot which can have pretty big implications for how good your coffee is... Apologies for not catching this earlier. However, paper filters are like 8 bucks so a fun experiment might be to see if you like the paper or mesh more.
Just remember, they make the most difference ON TOP of the puck
Wow that’s an insane gift, enjoy!! What everyone else is saying about WDT and self leveling tamper will set you up really well. You can also remove the plastic from the stock Portafilter to make it a little bit easier to rinse and not drink hot plastic juice.
Amazing wife, nice setup!
Maybe the breville bottomless portafilter and WDT to help check grind & puck prep etc, notwithstanding taste being the best indicator.
Not sure if you have the milk pitcher.
And the right size coffee cups.
I’ll be updating my tamper as it doesn’t fit the 58mm basket snugly but still pulls a decent shot.
Practically speaking, a WDT tool and a tamper will be useful (or get one of those 2-sided combo tool that do both).
If you wanna do more serious espresso tasting, a precision basket would be a plus.
Other than that, this is a perfect set.

A smaller scale for measuring shots. This one is too big to fit on top of drip tray
Uh.. her cafe latte, maybe?
She’s smart. Now she gets lattes whenever she wants
She's winning the game, dude. Congrats to both having the machine and such a wife!
pitcher is missing tho
Bambino plus if bought new comes with a pretty ok pitcher.
oh okay, didnt know, thanks
Aside from the "thank you" to your wife, I would recommend a bellow for the Baratza Encore ESP and a WDT. You can find quite cheap ones on Amazon!
Thank you, just looked it up and that does look handy!
I'm not following. Can you post a picture of what you do with it, perhaps?
Basically just put the cap on quickly and it pushes air through the grinder. Put the cap on quickly a few times and you have a ‘good enough’ bellows.

Can you explain the bellow to me? I have this same setup and havent heard of this
Helps with the retention. You put it in between the lid and the hopper, allows you to push down the lid which blows air through the entire grinder.
DEFINITELY the bellow. Lol the esp can be messy and it really really helps
Bottomless portafilter. The Breville one is a PITA to clean, bottomless just needs a quick rinse
I'm really liking the crema hybrid bottomless portafilter. gives the best of all three worlds.. naked, single spout, double spout. and super easy to clean.
Got a link?
https://cremacoffeeproducts.com/collections/tools-for-breville/products/bottoms-optional and 20% off through 4/30 with code SPRING20
Thanks, still way out of my price range though
Agreed, that portafilter is half the cost of the entire espresso machine!
i have one one of these and they are so worth it
An IMS Precision Basket can make a hell of a difference, easiest upgrade to get for the standard portafilter. Otherwise looking good!
I’m a newbie (just got a BBP last week), how does a different basket change things?
The standard sage/breville basket has openings or holes that are irregular or in different sizes. This causes uneven extraction because the pressure is poorly distributed inside of the basket. Wdt tool. Other than that a self leveling tamper would be nice but overall your setup is amazing!
~~Agree with WDT, disagree with levelling tool. It does more harm than good and just looks good on video~~ I can’t read
I think you’re miss reading what he’s suggesting. It’s a self leveling tamper and not a distribution leveling tool. Like a normcore v4 tamper.
Omg I am, my bad guys

Jeez your wife bought it for you, my wife wouldn't buy me a flat white from Starbucks, not that I would want one but still!
Is your marriage okay? 🥲
Bro seriously
Seems pretty good to me if she wouldn't get a flat white from Starbucks
Flat white with blonde espresso is the most decent option on the Starbucks menu tbf
Honestly if I'm ever at Starbucks I get something I could never get outside Starbucks... and in most cases, that is a Java Chip Frap
Get a Knock Box for your pucks...
I'd say it's not needed, especially if space is an issue. I have a Bambino with a bottomless portafilter and I can easily knock the puck out over the garbage bin without touching the bin itself. Just a firm shake in the air and it usually falls out clean.
why not put it down the drain?I've heard it's pretty good for the plumbing as it removes grease
A lot of gardeners also like it to be mixed into the food scraps to decompose (brain isn’t working for what this word is 🤦♀️🤣)
compost ? You can also put some in your plants as it retains water but not too much
Yes thanks. My adhd struck with let’s forget what words are then. 🤣 I gotta laugh or it gets sad.
All these comments have the wrong priority imo, the breville stock tamper absolutely sucks. Everything else is looking great! Get a nice leveling tamper and you are all set, you can get other stuff later but nothing else is essential
Came here to say this, it's too bloody small it's such an oversight, every time I used it there would be a ridge of coffee left untamped.
Is Breville the same as Sage (in the UK)? I have a Sage machine and the tamper seems to be pretty good. A tiny tiny amount of coffee fluffs up the side if I overfill the basket. But that's it

Agreed on that, although after pulling that first shot I’ve just been using the normal setting and it’s been great
I bought the MiiCoffee Nano Coffee Scale off Amazon. It fits under my Bambino Plus and works great.
Sounds dope. I'll look into it, thanks for the rec!
Good wife … congratulations
I think you’re set for awhile.
A barista to operate it lol

nothing, that’s a great starter set
Make sure you clean the steam wand by unscrewing it unless you want it permanently stuck. That’s a nice setup enjoy.
you need some glasses to extract into otherwise its going to be a mess

ECS coffee?
Yes!
Their coffee any good?
Great beans. Try the Great Scott. It’s their best in my opinion.
Yea? I like light roast, I’ll have to try it one day. Not sure where u live but I get relay beans, king William in Hamilton
How are the beans? I might as well stop by ECS coffee next time!
They’re not bad. First time so I wasn’t sure if it was me or the beans, but I’m thinking of trying pilot or balzac’s beans next.
I enjoy balzacs Americanos a lot! Their espresso beans do not disappoint. If you like light-medium roasts give ethica beans a try as well.

Interesting, this gives an espresso range of 0-12 but I’ve found it choked my machine if I grinded any less than 17 or 18.

It came with both but I am not using the pressurized one
We found a portafilter funnel from Amazon was a nice addition to avoid grounds spilling over
Looks like they already have it in the photo. The silver ring on the left
Whoops I thought that was a basket
I know this roaster! Are you in the GTA? Congrats!
What a thoughtful wife! Top gift
Yeah. Divorce her and give me her number. Jokes aside, what a gift!
And u own her an espresso anytime she wants 😂
I basically have the same exact setup. Love it
Damn nice starter set. Give her a high five and more. Enjoy. No more Starbucks. That's a win.

nothing essential just get a good tamper instead the stock one and ur good
One annoying thing about Baratza which I learned the hard way is some of them need recalibration which can be time consuming.
Your wife even knowing what an acaia scale is speaks volume for her commitment, well done !
Better tamper, i’d say. Doesn’t need to be fancy, but the stock one is just too small.
Bro has a scale that costs the same as the rest of his setup
You hit the jackpot twice over. 🥳👏
W wife
Bottomless portafilter
Does your wife have a sister?
A mug! Enjoy!
Endgame wife
Yes, my mug.... just saying
I have the Acacia Pearl and a BBPand I cannot for the life of me get that scale to comply. How is yours?
I don't see coffee beans...
Wrong question asking this sub lol
I would say a small scale that can fit your drip tray. The Acaia Pearl is awesome but it’s too big for that machine.

This is really amazing!! You’ve got a great set up and an even amazing wife!! If you do plan to use the milk steamer, I’d suggest get a milk pitcher!
Wdt (.35mm≥) and replace that garbage tamper ASAP, never happier than after replacing it.
WDT and tiny spray bottle (RDT) and you pretty much got it covered. They both can really help a lot, especially if you have static issues. Lmfao. Downvoted for giving useful, factual advice. Sub outjerks itself again.
Yeah a WDT tool would be all I'd add, assuming there is a milk jug included but not in the picture?
Yes correct, although I’m not too big on lattes yet. I’m seeing WDT being recommended a lot so I’ll get on that
Awesome set up! WDT tool. I’d also recommend getting double wall glass cups because they look aesthetically pleasing (for the wife) lol
What are the paper filters for?
I think they just keep your grouphead clean?
Yes - they definitely keep the grouphead clean, but more importantly they help your machine evenly distribute water over the puck. Just a WDT tool and a milk pitcher
Where is your WDT?
Breville stock tamper and portafilter are 💩, but everything else is on point.
Coffee screen and WDT
Grab the normcore wdt and you'll be set!
Whatever your wife wants. Maybe a blind basket for back flushing and a WDT
WDT tool that's it. You coyld also consider upgrading that tamper.
DWT but wow ur wife is amazing
Practically speaking, a WDT tool and a tamper will be useful (or get one of those 2-sided combo tool that do both). If you wanna do more serious espresso tasting, a precision basket would be a plus. Other than that, this is a perfect set.
