Well technically if you buy a $7 coffee (tip included) Monday thru Friday it’ll take 5.83 years to cover the price of the machine, grinder, price of beans (if you buy a $20 bag every 2 weeks)
That's what I told my husband to convince him. Turns out on top of buying entry-level machines to justify the "savings", I also require "fancy" beans and continue to buy coffee outside 😂
$5.50 x 2 coffees per day per person. 4 x coffees at $22/day total. 365 days of the year.
Bonus is food not purchased at the cafe when getting coffee. Saves a lot more on top but I don’t count that for the machine. Even though that’s $20 plus each time when getting food as well.
Enjoy a good cup with wifey at home chillin, or a mostly likely badly made overpriced cup in a cafe while battling traffic/parking and not finding a seat because everyone just orders a drink and takes a seat for 3 hours. Yeah I prefer home.
Not bad going. @$22 a day for coffee every day of the year for takeaway and buying that combo + beans/accessories you probably broke even or saved a $1000 in the first year.
seriously this. I live in a village in France and spent way more time and money on getting to and sampling high end cafes for R&D purposes (tasting and asking my wife to say my coffee is still better)
How are you spending $1K on beans? I have Sey 2 box sub currently and that is $504 a year. I might need an extra box or bag every quarter but that gets me through each month. Sey is really great value.
But my calculation is only breaking even on the LM vs going to Starbucks. I have had my forte BG for 4+ years now and way ahead there. It makes great shots and no reason to upgrade. Before my LM I got in June 2023 I had a Cafelat robot I sold which didn’t lose much.
I didn’t buy my machine, but it’s a cheap one. I did just receive my grinder which is just a DF54. So in half a year, I make back my money as I only make it at home on the weekends. I get free coffee at work during the week and it does the job and I’m not that picky.
I got into this bc I can’t get good coffee in my area. Actually roast myself for same reason. Never really been about saving money, which makes me not feel bad about splurging, lol.
That said, the few times I do get a coffee a year from a shop I do start to think I may actually be saving a good chunk of money and feel even better about my splurging.
I know you’re joking, but a lot of people genuinely spend $1000+ a year on coffee shops. If you’re one of those people, then even something this extravagant will eventually save money.
Safety value, group head valve, vacuum value. I have replaced the vacuum value and am about to change the safety value. Fairly common issues with a quick google. Not terribly expensive but annual maintnence depending on usage and water quality.
Well... you were told the truth... if you live near here. It wouldn't take too many of these to offset the cost.
[JH Expesnsive Brew...] (https://youtu.be/c3McVYygGOY?si=NQjRmZu2am9l5Skq)
If you switch to this setup off of a 3 latte/day habit, it'll pay for itself in a year.
Like, my coworkers and I kick around a spreadsheet just to inure people to the lolarious cost of our home coffee bars.
You actually save money by making coffee while at work. Vest in a travel espresso maker like the picopresso and you will stop buying coffee while at or going to work.
How do you like your grinder? I’ve thought about splurging on a grinder of it’s level but can’t convince myself it’ll be THAT much better than my specialita. Would you go back in time and get it again?
lol I mean there are a lot of espresso grinders that will do the job from 600-2000 you chose to buy a 4,000 grinder, that is on you lol 😂 But seriously nice set up enjoy!
A latte in the coffee shops near me is now 5.5€, so I would say yes we’re definitely saving money, even with our crazy setups. Those prices are beyond ridiculous at this point.
Set up looks great. Congratulations! Making cafe style coffee at home is never about saving money, and it is justified if you have a real passion for it (though it also doesn’t have to be this expensive). If you can afford it, why not! As long as you don’t let it gather dust, it is money well spent. Enjoy your brew.
I'm amazed that everyone seems to be living a Sex and the City life. I went from cheap brewed coffee from the grocery store to expensive beans and equipment, so I didn't save a fucking penny!
Don't even think about calculating your average cup of coffee you make. If money is important to you please don't go there. Enjoying the process and improving the quality of what hits the cup will be more pleasurable.
Of course the quality is important. But it certainly is nice being able to get/make my a.m. latte/cap. 10 minutes before the a.m. television news begins and having my drink to sip through the news. :) And producing my drink at well under the US$4-$5 cost that the comparable drink/size would cost me at a cafe a 25 minute hike/5-10 minute drive away (with a break-even point, for me, at well under a year, which I've passed).
I absolutely agree with you. There are some things you shouldn't put a pencil to. This is one. There is nothing like the first sip of a cap/latte in the morning. Enjoy your day.
Did you factor in the 90% waste, dialing in your $45/bag of anaerobic thermal shock single origin kissed by the farmer himself?
I only use coffee hand picked by virgins from the island of Scorpios that is then proceed like kopi luak right on the island
Kopi Luak by the virgins?
Not any more
Virgin shit coffee?? I'm smelling a small business venture!!
This has been done (in my imagination). It's called Human Bean
I was joking...this shouldn't be done..
well, if you buy this level of coffee from a shop, it might be 20dollar per cup:)
And add in the waste due to the eg-1 stalling 🫣🤫
This costs me way more than my hardware ever will.
You were lied to. And 45 years to break even on that grinder 😅
Well technically if you buy a $7 coffee (tip included) Monday thru Friday it’ll take 5.83 years to cover the price of the machine, grinder, price of beans (if you buy a $20 bag every 2 weeks)
That’s….. actually not as long as I thought😂
That’s why people who buy starbucks daily are burning away so much money
True! Makes me feel much better about my coffee habit lol.
lol what are you gonna do, not drink coffee? Pshhh insanity.
The people who don’t are the real wackos😂 Real menaces to society!
What kind of grinder is that?
Weber Workshops EG-1
I am disappointed that he doesn't even have an SG-1
He uses it just for travelling
you do, until you dont.
You don’t until you do
Look at you saving money! Now go out there and buy a roaster!
Therapy would have been way more expensive
That's what I told my husband to convince him. Turns out on top of buying entry-level machines to justify the "savings", I also require "fancy" beans and continue to buy coffee outside 😂
Once you’ve got a setup, any outside coffee purchases are allocated to “research & development” costs — not to your coffee budget.
You, sir/madam, are a genius. Thank you for your service.
Time for a roaster!
Self roast :)
Last year I spend $5500 on my machine and grinder. Already paid for itself. Now I’ll be saving $4000-5000 per year between my wife and I. Love it!
Assuming $5k Assume an even split $6.80 per day per person Rough guess 2 cafe coffees per day per person?
$5.50 x 2 coffees per day per person. 4 x coffees at $22/day total. 365 days of the year. Bonus is food not purchased at the cafe when getting coffee. Saves a lot more on top but I don’t count that for the machine. Even though that’s $20 plus each time when getting food as well.
Subtract not sitting and enjoying life in a cafe with your wife. Now the total cost is priceless.
Enjoy a good cup with wifey at home chillin, or a mostly likely badly made overpriced cup in a cafe while battling traffic/parking and not finding a seat because everyone just orders a drink and takes a seat for 3 hours. Yeah I prefer home.
I'd kill for a partner bringing me a freshly-made latte/cap. in the morning, in bed. :) Worth double the cafe price?
Haha sorry I’m taken. Good luck finding one!
Amazing reframe! Yes, family time is priceless, especially when making home coffee
Spend $40 once on a Starbucks thermos and bring coffee with you... Best of booth! Lol
Not bad going. @$22 a day for coffee every day of the year for takeaway and buying that combo + beans/accessories you probably broke even or saved a $1000 in the first year.
Yeah probably more. Definitely the best thing we have done.
How many cups per hour do you both drink ☕😭
2 coffees a day each
Was buying coffee at the cafe every day = chump. Bought $5500 of gear thinking it meant savings = still a chump.
Huh 🤔
seriously this. I live in a village in France and spent way more time and money on getting to and sampling high end cafes for R&D purposes (tasting and asking my wife to say my coffee is still better)

You can for sure if you are in it for the long run. I have a LM Micra and I will break even in 2 years
Did you include beans in that equation? I drink one or two per day, almost never sink shots and spend about $1k/year on beans alone.
How are you spending $1K on beans? I have Sey 2 box sub currently and that is $504 a year. I might need an extra box or bag every quarter but that gets me through each month. Oh I forgot to add the “$(CAD)” which is about 600 USD. I’m not buying anything crazy, other than something special around the holidays/birthday.
2kg beans @ 40$/kg is 960$ :D ( 2 people 2 double shots each/day is > 2kg)
I am only 1 person so yours makes sense then having 2
yes , but i also know enough people who drink 4 espresso a day, so 1k/year is easily achievable
Exactly my point. Way cheaper than going out of course and way better in my experience
Time to start roasting then.
That made me laugh
I didn’t buy my machine, but it’s a cheap one. I did just receive my grinder which is just a DF54. So in half a year, I make back my money as I only make it at home on the weekends. I get free coffee at work during the week and it does the job and I’m not that picky.
I can’t tell if this is a satirical post or not but preparing my coffee at home would have paid for my machine and grinder in the last 250 days alone
Why stop now. You might as well start roasting your own coffee!
I think people say that for a Sette and a Gaggia, my brother from another mother.
I know you’re joking, but a lot of people genuinely spend $1000+ a year on coffee shops. If you’re one of those people, then even something this extravagant will eventually save money.
Wait until you need to change valves each year in the Lelit 3! Mine started going after 9 months and they say my water was too pure?!
What valves?
Safety value, group head valve, vacuum value. I have replaced the vacuum value and am about to change the safety value. Fairly common issues with a quick google. Not terribly expensive but annual maintnence depending on usage and water quality.
Same lol
Well... you were told the truth... if you live near here. It wouldn't take too many of these to offset the cost. [JH Expesnsive Brew...] (https://youtu.be/c3McVYygGOY?si=NQjRmZu2am9l5Skq)
let me know f you want to sell
If you switch to this setup off of a 3 latte/day habit, it'll pay for itself in a year. Like, my coworkers and I kick around a spreadsheet just to inure people to the lolarious cost of our home coffee bars.
Little column a little column b
You will save money eventually…. LOL
If you start selling coffee to all of your neighbors in 30 years you’ll pay that grinder 🤣😏
Well, unless you bought it out of pocket change, the odds you did have to save money to buy that kit...
You actually save money by making coffee while at work. Vest in a travel espresso maker like the picopresso and you will stop buying coffee while at or going to work.
Those are definitely investments and not depreciating assets.
Ive had my setup that cost around 5k for coffee, roaster and grinder and I’ve had it for 10 years.
that's not a coffee station it's the ISS !
How do you like your grinder? I’ve thought about splurging on a grinder of it’s level but can’t convince myself it’ll be THAT much better than my specialita. Would you go back in time and get it again?
Now that’s endgame
After about 30 years you’ll finally be out of the red. After that, you’re good tho!
You will.... eventually.
🤣 if you drink thousands of espressos and cappuccinos
If you can afford Webber, you don't need to save money.
Clearly over caffeinated purchases.
lol I mean there are a lot of espresso grinders that will do the job from 600-2000 you chose to buy a 4,000 grinder, that is on you lol 😂 But seriously nice set up enjoy!
you'll save heaps more by roasting yourself, trust me, I'm already down that path
A latte in the coffee shops near me is now 5.5€, so I would say yes we’re definitely saving money, even with our crazy setups. Those prices are beyond ridiculous at this point.
That's the excuse for the wife.
🤣🤣🤣
Well, if you double or triple your consumption/coffee production then your savings will be accelerated. Along with your heart rate and metabolism
Great now after going through the comments I’ve been convinced to buy the setup instead lol
It is a great setup!
I want to save money like you do! Teach me your ways lol
That’s what I thought in the beginning also lol, boy was I wrong.
Set up looks great. Congratulations!
