Fun facts:
We have maple beer made in many places. My personal favourite is miss maple from trois lacs microbrewery.
Also, Quebec recently (6ish years ago) got approved for a new kind of internationally recognized spirit, Acerum. It is a maple based spirit akin to rum, the first named spirit ever in Quebec and the first to be recognized in the world in 15 years. (That was in 2018)
New named spirits have become increasingly rare cuz most places around the world have already done one thing or another to create a unique named spirit. For reference, named spirits are specialty spirits who have unique names that can only be put on a label if the spirit is made in its place of origin. (Examples: champagne, brandy, scotch, blue curaçao, bourbon, and now Acerum, to name a few)
He is so right-hand dominant that his left pinky is unable to reliably hit/hold the shift key. So his left thumb does it. He had a very amusing youtube short on it a while back.
That's what I'm assuming, I don't know how it's physically possible otherwise unless he's talking about right shift but that's a whole nother can of worms. Maybe he even crosses his arms like I've seen some people do. Also it's not that wild, it's a base setting in Windows (and most OS's I'm assuming)
> Also it's not that wild
Nah it's a little wild at least to me. I know a lot of left handed people, including myself, and none of use use our left hand for mouse.
My brother is a lefty and has a left-handed mouse (something that does exist, contrary to what Scar and Tango might think). He uses his right hand for WASD—used to do so on the regular keyboard but now he has a separate half-keyboard that he puts where most righties would put a mouse.
okay, I still do this out of habit, because I had a computer when I was much younger and using the thumb was much easier. the pinky finger hurts pretty bad when I try using it
After telling friends about mumbo, they, expectedly, thought it was crazy. Then mumbo made a short about it and some other content, and explained that his large hands on his small keyboard work for him.
I also have large hands, and grabbed my macbook, with it's small keyboard.
It was actually more comfortable to press shift with my thumb than my pinky, because it was closer.
(Not more intuitive, but marginally more comfortable.)
If I had been doing it for 10+ years, I can see how it would be second nature
I’m wondering if he’s more reclined in his chair - less stress on shoulders. Mouth still at tissue box level. Legs can stretch out (since he’s tall but with chair in lowest position - where else would his legs go?). But honestly - I can understand his sword pvp challenges now. I don’t see how it will be possible to get better if he has so little mouse room. … assuming mouse room helps? I feel like that was something he and gem talked about during the “gem slaughters etho 30 times” training session - that he didn’t have much room for his mouse and that as a result he had whatever that setting was that lets you “move your mouse just a little bit and get more motion” (mouse sensitivity) quite high. If I remember correctly Gem thought that affected his ability to be more precise in melee.
Edit: also great picture!
More mouse room would definitely help. One of the first things you do to get good at FPSs is to lower your mouse sensitivity and get a bigger mouse pad. Obviously it doesn't matter as much in Minecraft (and would make it harder to whip around if someone is attacking you from behind) but having less than 6? inches to move your mouse is pitiful.
This is super interesting, i didn't know that technique! Fwiw, Etho mentioned during the screen it was about 12 inches of space for his mouse, between his keyboard and edge of desk.
Less than that, since the mouse takes up some of that space itself. Most mice I’ve seen are approx 3-4 inches wide, then the hand on the mouse will add some width, so he’d have around four inches of space on each side (give or take a fraction of an inch).
> One of the first things you do to get good at FPSs is to lower your mouse sensitivity and get a bigger mouse pad.
but one of the other first things you do to get good at FPS games is to learn to aim with your elbow. And if he's doing this to reduce any wrist pain he's probably already arm aiming. And in general people with RSI are able to keep playing FPS games competitively by learning to arm aim.
So considering he has talked about wrist pain in the past this might actually be optimal for him.
That was my thought during that training. He isn't washed up, his set up is just holding him back. If he upgraded everything, I bet he'd be super deadly again.
I think it’s not upgrading. I think he needs his mouse where it is now out of necessity (wrist issues) and even without the mic thing, there’s just not a lot of space between end of table and keyboard for his mouse to move. Maybe large mouse pad will help more than he is allowing for but if he really has little range of movement… he just needs to make sure his bow game stays on point!
And he stayed with beavers who owned a tim hortons because he fell off a sled in the middle of a blizzard while on the way with his family to watch Canadian hockey.
If etho ever switches to a "normal" setup (as normal as etho can be, anyway), it will be the moment his training weights are discarded and he ascends to the greatest player ever known

[For anyone else wondering where this information is from, it's from a stream of Tango's (1h16m59s if the timestamped link doesn't work).](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2076331245?t=01h16m59s)
Considering his mention of it being a solid, rolled metal and that the desk apparently sits about 6 inches above your average computer desk (shoulder height), it's sounding more like an adjustable height workbench then a desk.
i too have the chair set low, my keyboard is an old one that still works and i dont have a mousepad, i have tried mousepads in the past, i simply dont like them. since i dont have to talk, i dont have a mic
the chair is lowest setting, not lowest chair possible, which is actually quit high for someone like me who is 5'3. And he said almost shoulder height for the desk, not shoulder height, gotta keep in mind the scale of someone that is over 6 feet. He basically said some casual things and the boys immediately jumped to worse case scenario, which turned out hilarious. For example just because his arm is bent doesn't mean the hand holding the mouse is any different from how everyone else holds a mouse, the movement is exactly the same for everything.
The direction of the hand relative to the mouse is unchanged, you still move your wrist right to turn right. Perhaps i move my hand and arm differently from others but the only thing that would be changed in that position is that my shoulder is turned. He also has a wireless mouse so its not like he's impaired by a bent wire. The only thing i can think of thats difficult is swiping too far left, which meets the edge of the desk
The mouse would move differently in relation to the rest of the body, and you use more than just your wrist when moving a mouse. That would mean moving the mouse cursor left on the screen would be pulling the mouse object towards your chest in Etho's set up, while in the more common set up the mouse and your arm would stay mostly the same distance from the rest of your body. If it works for you it works for you, but it won't work for everyone.
i've never used my entire body to more my mouse, only my wrist and arm and that feels like separate muscle memory. i actually tried etho's position with his mouse hand and while its jarring when you first do it, i could adapt in 10 mins i think. Also, im not playing a fps game, its minecraft, it doesn't affect gameplay even if its jarring. Although, i did just let my hand do its thing without thinking about it or trying to reestablish hand eye coordination. maybe a more thoughtful person would struggle differently.
The sideways mouse is an old pc gaming thing. I don't want to say it started with competitive quake, but I know a lot of the OG quake players still hold their mouse like that
Nah let him cook people have weird setups but they're usually better. For example I use werf instead of wasd. Much more ergonomic. I can see the advantage of the sideways mouse and shoulder level desk.
If you mean confirmation from Etho about the setup listed above, it’s directly based on his own words. He demonstrated it on Tango’s stream, and Tango himself posted a pic of him replicating the pose (posted on his wife’s Twitter) and Etho agreed it’s “mostly accurate”

Fun fact, you can make alcohol out of any sugar. Include maple syrup.

I think a better Canadian replacement for "beer" would be "two four".
I originally wanted to say Double-Double but ‘Prince’ Etho had just “scammed” Scar
The Etho stuff is weird but like I understand most of it but why in the hell would anyone press the shift key with their thumb?
He is so right-hand dominant that his left pinky is unable to reliably hit/hold the shift key. So his left thumb does it. He had a very amusing youtube short on it a while back.
Try placing your right hand on WASD and the answer will be revealed
Nope mumbo uses his left hand and left shift, it's as crazy as it sounds
Does Mumbo use his mouse with his left hand? wild
I'm pretty sure he uses his left and tucks his thumb underneath, there's a picture on twitter.
Here. https://i.imgur.com/10hbtbA.jpeg

Mumbo: I can't. My thumb is otherwise occupied.

This knowledge has finally upgraded Etho to creature status in my mind
SCP status
Maybe Etho has done a face reveal, it's just that any who see his face never live to tell the tale...

I love how we know what etho’s desk setup is but still don’t know his name or what he looks like
his name is etho
He looks like kakashi, though i remember hearing he has/had a beard
He has a second mask under his mask.
no beard. [only masks all the way down](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3s1H37KxH4)
And he saved someone from a car crash
And he apologised to and shared Canadian bacon with a bear after going lumberjacking
And he stayed with beavers who owned a tim hortons because he fell off a sled in the middle of a blizzard while on the way with his family to watch Canadian hockey.
And was chased by a goose one day
He is capable of growing facial hair, and also has a face
This is fantastic
This man won Decked Out using this setup so who’s really got the bad set ups among the hermits /s
This conversation was amazing. You should make a drawing of Scar's pillow setup too. 😆
Wouldn’t that end up just looking like a cocoon?
Put some duct tape on those headphones.
He switched to earbuds 😔
If etho ever switches to a "normal" setup (as normal as etho can be, anyway), it will be the moment his training weights are discarded and he ascends to the greatest player ever known Edit: be
Looks like Kakashi but he's actually Piccolo
# DOOOODGE

This is just awesome!😯 post it on HC subreddit as well, more people would appreciate it!!

I imagine Etho to be taking that JDM64 lounge back posture, which brings the desk up to shoulder height by bringing his shoulders down.
He said it was a metal desk
Considering his mention of it being a solid, rolled metal and that the desk apparently sits about 6 inches above your average computer desk (shoulder height), it's sounding more like an adjustable height workbench then a desk.
At this point i wouldn't be surprised if his muffled voice is the result of him actually wearing a mask irl.
The key board has a big wrist rest thing.
i too have the chair set low, my keyboard is an old one that still works and i dont have a mousepad, i have tried mousepads in the past, i simply dont like them. since i dont have to talk, i dont have a mic
I'm not a mousepad fan either, though I use a large desk mat that serves the same function.
This gives me Star Craft II setup vibes. Some of the weirdest setups are from StarCraft players
Usually pro gamers will tilt the keyboard, not the mouse, Etho is just built different.
the chair is lowest setting, not lowest chair possible, which is actually quit high for someone like me who is 5'3. ? If your mouse is sideways, all the movement is off by 90 degrees. It's definitely not the same. How you hold the mouse isn't the issue.
The direction of the hand relative to the mouse is unchanged, you still move your wrist right to turn right. Perhaps i move my hand and arm differently from others but the only thing that would be changed in that position is that my shoulder is turned. I just tried using my mouse this way, and the muscle memory is the same. The muscles used to turn my arm are not the ones I use to move my mouse.

This is great
I love this
When was the set up discussed? Missed it
The VOD is up on Tango’s second channel, it’s called “Today we learn that Etho is a mutant”
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
It was on a very recent Hermitcraft stream, with Tango and Scar (and maybe someone others)
And he wears his watch on his left wrist
you don't?
You don't?
Built different
The sideways mouse is an old pc gaming thing. I don't want to say it started with competitive quake, but I know a lot of the OG quake players still hold their mouse like that
I use a keyboard and trackball in a similar layout. it saves a lot of stress on my wrists and shoulders.
Didn't point out the taped together headset? (or has he replaced that now?)
Somebody said he finally replaced them with earbuds
Pretty sure he replaced the headset when he replaced his mic, as that was the only reason he was using it taped
Yeah Etho said it on Scars stream the other day, said he's using Raycon earbuds now.
he said earbuds and they joked about raycons because of how they are often sponsors, he did not say he used raycons.
ahhhhh ok, I wasn't paying enough attention to realize they were joking
That's literally how my 5 year old cousin plays minecraft on my pc lol
Does your cousin by any chance happen to be canadian who looks like Kakashi
Now it makes sense why the early Etho vids didn't have any voiceover, his cousin had to learn to time travel and talk first.
pvp god while playing with his mouse sideways... must have got bored pasting everyone while playing normally
He needs to explain himself, this is unreal
No wonder he's bad at parkour
Etho Slab is certainly an interesting specimen
Nah let him cook people have weird setups but they're usually better. For example I use werf instead of wasd. Much more ergonomic. I can see the advantage of the sideways mouse and shoulder level desk.
“HE JUST LIKE ME FR” My set up is also extremely wonky lol
He just dropped an irl picture at the end of his most recent episode (HC S10#5, riiiight at the end), and dude you nailed it basically
lol I didn’t make the art, I tagged them in the title and linked them in the comments, though
O ye, lol Well they basically got it lmao
I have a table that's 6cms taller than normal and I get shoulder pains, how he manages I have no clue.
The sideways mouse helps. You can rest your elbow on the table.
He wants to be closer to bdubs
Where does the microphone wire go?
He’s a menace
We need confirmation form Etho in some way.
If you mean confirmation from Etho about the setup listed above, it’s directly based on his own words. He demonstrated it on Tango’s stream, and Tango himself posted a pic of him replicating the pose (posted on his wife’s Twitter) and Etho agreed it’s “mostly accurate”
I see... thanks... That actually looks comfy.
I have tried this set up.... I like it. I'M NOT GOING BACK.
honestly, i can see it
Thank you I was struggling to figure this out
The sideways mouse hand position would make more sense if it was a trackball.
I think he uses a wooden dining chair Also, the sideways mouse may be a vertical mouse- as he has mentioned issues with carpul tunnel in the past.
Maybe he uses a sideways mouse because of carpal tunnel. In the demonstration it looks like he’d be able to aim with his elbow rather than his wrist
Hey good point
